Lateralus came out when I was in College. At the same time my psych course was teaching about cerebral lateralization. That first line talks about early brain development. Babies see in black and white, then red and yellow. The sequence starts at one, goes up to something much longer and ends at 1. I think the song is about getting back in touch with your intuitive child-like self and returning to that receptive state.
I, for one, dislike Tool being compared to any of those bands. To me those bands have never sounded like Tool and vis versa. Tool are their own thing and they've earned that title.
So I know I'm late to the party here but this song goes so far in depth with the Fibonacci that it goes beyond just the syllables in the verses. Song actually starts at 1 second rather than 0 on Tools posted YT lateralus, so things may seem 1 sec off, but going off my song library song starts at 0 sec. - Syllables in each verse go (1) black, (1) then, (2) white are, (3) all I see, (5) In my infancy, (8) red and yellow then came to be, (5) reaching out to me, (3) lets me see - The introduction part of the song in 4/4 time is 01:12 long. 0,1,1,2 are the first four numbers in the sequence. - The first verse starts at 97 seconds. 97 seconds is 1.617 of a minute. Which is approx the golden ratio found in the Fibonacci (1.618) - Each verse is 55 seconds long. 55 is the 11th # in the sequence. - Time signatures within the main or chorus riff is 9/8, 8/8, 7/8. 987 is a number in the sequence.
Was going to point out this exact thing. Throughout the song most every major change happens around golden ratio, fibonochi, and primes. Not just the lyrics but also beats measures meters are mathematically immaculate. The white black red yellow also refers to the philosophers stone.... this song should be taught in schools.
Yep! Syllables go-13. The pre- Chorus is 13. "As below So above and beyond I imagine" Lateralus is 'Lateral Thinking." The time signatures he mentioned 987, is a number in the sequence. His vocals starts at 1minute &.37 seconds = 1.618 minutes (Golden Ratio.) .
I'm a fan of everyone who found the Fibonacci sequence in Lateralus. Sir, you got a lot of fans, the TOOL Army. It"s very cool to look at TOOL by your classical eye . We salute you

Maynard writes the lyrics after hearing the piece of music. The vocals are also viewed and treated as an instrument, rather than just leading the song. Fantastic reaction; well done.
It always cracks me up when people say oh it fits so perfectly and you're like yeah no shit because the music was already finished so naturally he's going to be singing in the gaps 😂
Maynard takes the music and tries not to ruin the masterpiece as created and in the process elevates it to perfection. No other band sound like this. Absolutely mesmerising.
The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool."
you're the first reactori've ever seen who's clocked the fibonacci sequence without a tool army member laying it out. i could see you thinking it! Masters of minimalism and taking an idea and extending it in ways that are both simple and complex. when i tabbed out the bass line that section was as you guessed, 9/8, 4/4 and 7/8 with 5/8 for the verses.
Thanks. Folks like me train to listen to music like this...takes years of practice. The 9/8, 8/8, 7/8 thing was a lucky guess. The macro phrase has 24 beats. 9+8+7 is a neat way to have three large measures. I’ve thought about that before in my own music and happened to recognize the pattern.
For years I was a TOOL fan, I practiced Aikido and studied Nietzsche - in the song Lateralus, I realized they all came together. The spirals in Aikido's philosophy of movement and Nietzsche's philosophy of "embrac[ing] whatever may come." And, no doubt, there's probably at least dozens of other references/influences that could be legitimately inferred and or mined from just that single song. Nietzsche once wrote that he was writing for an audience probably not yet born. I believe TOOL is writing for future generations that will still marvel at their art. TOOL. RULES.
"It lifts you up"........Yes it does.......Take the TooL Journey my friend, it's the most cerebral and intelligent and progressive music available.......they are truly organic and have grown together as men over 30 years.....I am 54 years old, no kid........they have guided me during many dark times, this particular album came out in 2001 and the tour was interrupted by the tragedy of 9/11, the lyrics throughout this album and catalog.......will spark thought......you're not reading too much into it......they are talking about becoming the best "human" you can be and to push the envelope of accepted to be possibly better
Then Fear Inoculum came out and their tour was interrupted by the Pandemic. Quite a coincidence or they release their music right when the world would need it most.
I saw them live in Madrid in 2019, 6 months before the pandemic started. The emotional response to even a video such as this can be overwhelming - especially with all what has been happening. Dissecting the psyche.

I love these analyses by professional musicians. It shows that many of these heavy "rock" bands are not just pulling uot their instruments and making a bunch of noise. There is structure and intelligence. They really are musicians and not just a group of guys guys getting stoned and playing slamming their instruments. Also love that there are other Tool fans out there that like similar bands as I do (Pink Floyd, Rush, King Crimson, etc.) which I believe led me to really liking and appreciating Tool.
Buddy, if you just organically discovered the fibonacci sequence this is the most amazing reaction to this song I have ever heard. Kudos to you man. All Hail the Octopus!!!!! Danny Carey.
It’s a music school thing. My masters and doctorate are both in composition, and the academic side of that is in analysis and history of music theory. As a musicianship teacher, I’ve taught those rhythms, and it just popped out at me when I heard it in the rhythmic poetry. Plus, I’ve heard Pneuma many times and was anticipating rhythmic complexity in this track.
Just one thing; "overthinking-overanalysing separates the body from the mind" is a message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and a warning to those who do not...
Doug: Thank you for this. The joy you felt, I have felt every one of the 100+ times I have played this track. Wonderful having you explain some of the magic. Great stuff from you and of course from TOOL.
I thought your critique of Tool's music, from one listen, was the best I have heard so far. I am convinced that Tool is the greatest group of musicians, together and on their own. I don't think you can find any better. Their music is so complex and has incredible depth. I have been hooked ever since I first listened to them in 1997. Their music NEVER gets old! Thank you for your perspective, I appreciate your attention to the many details 🤘
I had to be told that they utilized the Fibonacci Sequence when making this song. You picked it up on the first listen. Kudos. Also, if you think you're reading too much into a Tool song, it's still most likely not enough.
The fact that you think he picked up on that without any prior knowledge is super impressive. Especially considering you can witness evidence that he's already heard this song. Super naive.
@@Jalynfein You may be right or wrong. But another commenter said his pianist wife picked up on it on her first hearing. And he explains why he is familiar with it - it's used in classical music composition. So maybe he is fibbing about the Fibonacci, but it's worth remembering that just because someone can do something that you can't, doesn't mean it can't be done. Rick Beato can pick up on songs on first hearing, because his ear is trained and he is familiar with certain patterns that frequently show up in pop songs. Key of Geebs, also a composer, picks up on all sorts of different aspects of songs that many of us probably missed.
@@Bramble451 Key of Geebs also admitted to looking ahead at songs, so it's possible he knew about the Fibonacci sequence ahead of time. I'm skeptical as well that someone, even a musician would just pick up on that so clearly and early in the song on the first play. I also don't believe that the Fibonacci sequence is super common in music, or at least not commonly discussed. My wife is a pianist and has studied music and theory, she has a degree and has been playing for over 20 years and teaches lessons. I'm curious if she's aware of it, I'll ask her tonight. I'm not saying someone would never pick up on this, but in the day of TH-cam fame, some people will say or do almost anything to get recognition and subscribers.

It's like sitting in a room with friends back in Austin, Texas playing tracks for each other and getting turned on to new things. Love it.
987 is also a Fibonacci number, the 15th I believe. Great reaction, always very interesting hearing someone's opinion who's educated on music, can't wait to hear the future reactions.

Omg it IS a heartbeat in the womb at the beginning. I've been listening to Tool for more than 20 years and never caught on to that but it makes so much sense given how the lyrics start. Wow, and you got that on the first take. Kudos
"lyric -driven" is ironic since the way Tool writes their songs is the instrumental arrangement is done first and the vocals are done at the end. I suspect that a song that plays on the Fibonacci sequence in lyrics and music would require a more coordinated effort.
This song has it all... all the intricacies and layers of the music & musicality you noted, but also: • math (Fibonacci, spiral, Golden Ratio) • science (galaxies spiral, grow, ever expanding) • human development ("black and white are all I see, in my infancy, red and yellow then came to me..."-how human eyesight develops from infancy and beyond) • existentialism ("spiral out, keep going..." or "push the envelope, watch it bend") • spirituality (reaching, striving, wanting more, "There is so much more that beconks me to look through to these infinite possibilities") • mental health ("Overthinking, over analyzing... withering my intuition...") • hope for the future ("We may just go where no one's been... keep going") My favorite line has always been "I'm reaching up and reaching out, I"m reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me"

Doug, you strike me as an intelligent person. That was great hearing it the first time, and the way you described the emotional consequence of the beat and focus on lyrical beat was surprising to me.
Yes! Grew up listening to the Rite of Spring, my mother played it often and I loved it, then on to Tool as a teenager...never made the connection but it's 💯💯!!
Thank you for your specialized mind to think and analyze about all the stuff, from the past and present music recordings. You're a nice person to have friendship.
It's amazing how people can "hear" this band and/or "be aware" of them but once you dig in, the intricacies and brilliance is witnessed. Great vid, I'm sure people will be calling for Wings and Judith, etc. I would be interested in seeing The Grudge. Most people who do these videos tend to overlook that one. Either way you go, I can't wait to see the journey. Tool is an animal all their own & the path you take will be interesting no matter the path.
I like this videos because I know nothing about music, I just listen to what "feels" good, but thanks to this type of reactions I understand a little bit about the structure of a song, the interactions between the different elements (notes and rhythm etc)...and it opens a whole nee world and makes me respect musicians even more! So intresting!
When you see Justin (bass player) perform live.... he’s in a 5th time signature when he moves around. It’s some elliptical rocking in no rhythm the band is playing, including himself....
Justin, at least at the show I was at, was hilarious live. He looked like he was having the time of his life and seemed to be having an ongoing dialogue and running joke with the first three rows of the crowd in front of him throughout the show.
Thanks for reminding me about this. I've only seen Tool live once [2019], and noticed the same thing. As a drummer myself, I always try to focus on whatever polyrhythmic magic is happening, regardless of who I'm listening to. After hearing a song two or three times, I've usually got the pattern recognized, and move according to that groove. But watching Justin live really messed with my head. I spent an entire song just focusing on what he and Danny were playing and could NOT sync that to his body movements. It was frustratingly fascinating. I ultimately came to the same conclusion you mentioned, and just stopped TRYING to figure out what his body was moving to. My theory is, that's some deep "third eye" sh!T, manifesting physically, and unconsiously to Justin. But it's COOL to watch!!
The Fibonacci sequence is referenced all other this song: - The introduction section of the song is 01:12 long (0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four numbers in the sequence). - The first verse starts at 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes - (The Golden Ratio) - Each verse is 55 seconds long (11th # in sequence). - The syllables in the verses coincide with the sequence, as the first part of the first verse goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 - The 2nd line “to swing on the spiral” finishes at 6:18 which numerically matches 1.618 - (The Golden Ratio) - The time signature of the main riff is 9/8 8/8 7/8, 987 is the 17th term in the sequence.
Thank you for your reaction Doug and thank you to those who suggested this band, it did not know them; I will listen to more of their music, they make great sound!

- The introduction part of the song in 4/4 time is 01:12 long. 0,1,1,2 are the first four numbers in the sequence.
- The first verse starts at 97 seconds. 97 seconds is 1.617 of a minute. Which is approx the golden ratio found in the Fibonacci (1.618)
- Each verse is 55 seconds long.
My dude you are over thinking and over analyzing. Watch our or your body will separate from your mind!
But the sequence starts at zero...

When you're tired from a long day or down for whatever reason, listen to this band.
The whole album is put together in Fibonnacci order as well. So listen to it in that order and it all blends together

Tool: “challenge accepted!”
The Tool Army needs more of your Tool reactions!!!
The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 16th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool."
"What is that?". It's the sound of you being born.
Nice🤘💯
Dude. Props lol
I was reading this comment right as he said that 😂
Excellent n
“no one sounds like Tool... because no one can” GD right.
you're the first reactori've ever seen who's clocked the fibonacci sequence without a tool army member laying it out. i could see you thinking it!
Thanks very much. My brother has been on me for years to dive into Tool. No stopping now!
Then Fear Inoculum came out and their tour was interrupted by the Pandemic. Quite a coincidence or they release their music right when the world would need it most.
All of their shows are amazing but IMO the Lateralus tour was the most memorable. I was so thankful they came to Philly that year.
I saw them live in Madrid in 2019, 6 months before the pandemic started. The emotional response to even a video such as this can be overwhelming - especially with all what has been happening. Dissecting the psyche.
The whole album is the Fibonacci sequence. You should watch the interview with Maynard on Joe Rogan show where he explains this.
Then Maynard tells Joe that it wasn't intentional. Maynard trolling Joe with a little smirk.
Doug, I absolutely love your Tool reactions. That’s how I found you and I have since loved all of your other vids. Thankyou sir 🙏🏻

It’s a music school thing. My masters and doctorate are both in composition, and the academic side of that is in analysis and history of music theory.
God damn that was great you recognising the fib sequence almost straight away.
I had to be told that they utilized the Fibonacci Sequence when making this song. You picked it up on the first listen. Kudos.
Also, if you think you're reading too much into a Tool song, it's still most likely not enough.
The fact that you picked up the Fibonacci thing on your first listen is super impressive. Keep doing these reactions, loving them so far.

To see you react to the very things that made me react when I first heard them is wonderful. It's like sitting in a room with friends back in Austin, Texas playing tracks for each other and getting turned on to new things. Love it.

just watched a couple of videos, there is nothing to say Sir, you just GET IT, and there's not much to say. Kudos and wish you all the best.
the ratio you were referring to is called The Golden Ratio which ties into both nature and all forms of art
Just another name for the Fibonacci Sequence.
This song has it all... all the intricacies and layers of the music & musicality you noted, but also:
• math (Fibonacci, spiral, Golden Ratio)
• science (galaxies spiral, grow, ever expanding)
• human development ("black and white are all I see, in my infancy, red and yellow then came to me..."-how human eyesight develops from infancy and beyond)
• existentialism ("spiral out, keep going..." or "push the envelope, watch it bend")
• spirituality (reaching, striving, wanting more, "There is so much more that beconks me to look through to these infinite possibilities")
• mental health ("Overthinking, over analyzing... withering my intuition...")
• hope for the future ("We may just go where no one's been... keep going")
My favorite line has always been "I'm reaching up and reaching out, I"m reaching for the random or whatever will bewilder me"
Great analysis. Crazy to think you got this the first time. Whoa.

When you see Justin (bass player) perform live.... he’s in a 5th time signature when he moves around. It’s some elliptical rocking in no rhythm the band is playing, including himself....
Well considering his playing resolves into rhythm with the band more than once, he’s most definitely playing a rhythm.
@@pro-v7500 I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the motion his body is making is what isn’t in time with anything
@@bradysimpson mind blown. Thanks for clarification.
It’s awesome to see someone fully understand the song on the first listen. Most people just don’t get why us tool fans geek out so much on this stuff.
The Fibonacci sequence is referenced all other this song:
- The introduction section of the song is 01:12 long (0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four numbers in the sequence).
- The first verse starts at 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes - (The Golden Ratio)
- Each verse is 55 seconds long (11th # in sequence).
- The syllables in the verses coincide with the sequence, as the first part of the first verse goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3
- The 2nd line “to swing on the spiral” finishes at 6:18 which numerically matches 1.618 - (The Golden Ratio)
- The time signature of the main riff is 9/8 8/8 7/8, 987 is the 17th term in the sequence.
Fun Fact: φ-1 == 1/φ.
Thank you for your reaction Doug and thank you to those who suggested this band, it did not know them; I will listen to more of their music, they make great sound!
