    @MrClassicmetal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

When Dimebag burst upon the scene he made quite an impact. And rightfully so.
A lot of the established players praised his style and sound, guys like Vai and Lynch gave him props.
And here comes the interesting part; when he stated in interviews that he used solid state amps, he got criticised for the "solid state tone" in various guitar forums.
It would've been funny if he had never revealed that he did _not_ use tube amps. Because when people know what kind of gear is used, all of a sudden they start attributing certain qualities to a sound...😁

The term 'overrated' describes value. In regards to youtube channels, it does not translate directly into number of subscribers/views. For example, if only 10 people watched and all of them had a positive opinion about a video that had mistakes in it, that video would be overrated. So no, saying that your youtube channel is overrated is not a compliment. You have used the title 'Top 10 Overrated Guitar Players' just to catch more views, which worked. I believe that 'Top 10 guitar players that I don't like' would not be as effective. You knew that people will not like that, but you just don't care, you'll say anything to boost the views. Sad.

I actually thought the video in question was kind of a breath of fresh air amid a sea of people who all have the same opinions. Honesty is not really valued on TH-cam or in the social media world in general, it's more important to be funny and upbeat all the time and make sure you never express an opinion that is out of line with the current dogma, or if you're going to make any kind of a statement you have to make sure to crack a lot of jokes around it so that you can redirect any criticism that comes your way by saying you weren't serious.
The other side of this of course is that most of the people criticizing you on here probably can't play or read a note of music, and most of the big music TH-camrs don't have the balls to put their own music out there or express any original opinions.

The first video was genius because it's pure low IQ clickbait. He probably made a thousand dollars on it. And to be fair, he was spot on about most of those guys and in a way that was kind ditsy for lack of a better word. Very few people are really good at the guitar and also at the same time really rich and famous for doing so. It's an insanely hard instrument to play because you can do so much on it, so the bar is high, and secondly, people have bad taste, and most people are put off by greatness (it's kind of alienating I guess).

I enjoyed the original video more, as I felt it was more "in the moment" and what you really felt. This one feels (to me anyway) more like an apology, which you don't have or need to give to us. Your opinions and/or feelings are just as valid as ours, if not more so, being that you are a guitarist yourself. I, on the other hand, am not. I do have 3 guitars and I fiddle with them now and again but I suck and my short, stubby fingers were not made for narrow necks. Anyway... I loved that video and I did provide a comment or two. Still a bit curious why you felt the need to post this one, excepting the possibility that it might garner high views like that one did. Yes, I love a good rant, and I rant about musicians, singers, et al., all the time myself. And yes, sometimes a friend, acquaintance or co-worker will share some info (whether I want it or not) as to why I should have a less steadfast opinion. "Listen to this, watch this...". I get that all the time. Then again, I'm sort of known (in my circles) for my sarcasm and extreme criticality of certain musicians, actors, etc. Please consider sticking to your guns, regardless of what we (your viewers, friends, family, whatever) have to say. There will ALWAYS be people that disagree with you, and it will get worse as you gain notoriety. So, in my humble opinion, it was your honesty and off-the-cuff starkness that brought in all those views on that episode. No need to apologize, regardless of what sources may have influenced you to "dilute" or "enhance" your original post. I disagreed (in the other video) on the inclusion of Zappa, but I still loved the show. Keep it going!!!

To be honest a top 10 underrated guitarist list would be more interesting.
I also don't understand why people like Keith Richards, Jack White, or Kirk Hammett are on that list because nobody rates them highly. Saying Marty Friedman was overrated would make more sense because he's actually highly rated by most (to be clear, Friedman is absolutely not overrated).
You want some actually interesting overrated picks? Look no further than the old school boomer rock guitarists. Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Page, etc. Take Page for example; anybody who's at least a little bit talented who practices hard, practises smart and practises consistently for approx. 8 months can master anything in the Zeppelin discography if they want.
Now let's look at the young Swedish guitar phenom, 19 years old, releases his first album about 4 years after Zeppelin's last; Yngwie Malmsteen. Someone practising the same way for 8 months would be nowhere close to being able to attempt his songs. There's not much time separating Page and Malmsteen, yet one is light years ahead and remains incredibly challenging to this day. You could make the same case for Van Halen, whose musicianship still endures after all these years unlike all those other boomer guitarists, despite being close in terms of era.
The boomer rockers were great then, and are still great songwriters. Great sources of inspiration? Sure. But great guitar players now? Nah.

Check out Zakk’s stuff in Ozzmosis. Beautiful phrasing man. Ozzmosis (in my opinion) is Ozzy’s most underrated album. His two notes per string runs are crazy in general. As far as is heavy use of pinch harmonics, you can thank Ozzy for that. He told him to sound that way in the middle of Zakk’s debut album, No Rest For the Wicked. If you want flack, do what you did last time. If not maybe throw in your input as far as seeing why people like them as well. End on a positive note. I like Alex Lifeson too, but not many say he’s overrated, so that was safe territory for you. I’m actually surprised you didn’t drop David Gilmore’s name. But then again, I don’t think many believe he’s overrated. Your opinion is your opinion and there’s nothing wrong with that. But maybe don’t just shit allover someone next time. I have this issue with plenty of music myself. BUT my amazing father said “When you don’t like someone’s music, find out why, and then find what you like about them.” Learning never stops if you know what’s good for you. The moment you say I’ve learned it all and you’re as good as it gets, congratulations, you have fulfilled your prophecy that you have nothing left to learn and you instantly stop progressing. Another one my father gave me was “It’s about the journey, not the destination”. You can learn something from anyone, even someone that’s never played music before they pick up their instrument for the first time. Every musician in the world has their influences. With the exact of Keith Richards, not a single one of these guys are up there talking about they’re the best there is or ever will be. So if you want to talk about people being overrated, maybe talk about the cocky guys that think they’re better than everyone (cough cough Richards). I think that would be a more honest approach in my opinion.

Good comeback video. The Keith comment threw me off last time the most because he is rhythm. But you cleared it up by saying he’s cool and wrote some off the best riffs and right you are. You can get tired of some of the guitarists that were on your list for sure but some where and are some pretty good and some great guitarist. I favor some of the more song writing guitarist with tasty licks and great song writing. I would say Guthrie Goven is one of the best guitarist today but he needs a singer songwriter or he will just stay around with the same material. That’s not a good thing. But opinions are like you know what and everyone has them lol. Being technically great is not good enough because it’s not music or has any staying power. They sound like practicing. Take Comfortably Numb as an example, very well written song, has great two solos in it and everyone remembers it. You can for sure play it more than once and many many have.

I have some points and questions. It would be really nice if you consider reading them and maybe answering them.
    1. How come you were rating all these people without knowing their work? As you mentioned several times, you have known these guys better thanks to friends and people who introduced you to more interesting works of them since the previous video.
    2. How come your Pantera fan friend never talked with you about cemetery gates when it was one of their most popular songs and most aired?
    3. About Steve Vai and his complex music. Just because something isn't pleasant to your ears or you can not constantly listen to, doesn't mean it is Overrated. It just you don't like it.
    4. This is somehow related to the previous one. I don't believe that there is any reason to rate anyone in music or any type of entertainment (even the cheapest and cheesiest productions). It is just a matter of personal preferences and taste! You may like it and will listen to it, otherwise millions of other bands/artists are out there waiting to be discovered and probably more joy and fun bringing for you with listening to their music.
Anyway, I like your videos because it is always cool to have different opinions and also dare to talk about your opinions! Thumbs up to that! 🍺

He just doesn't understand the guys he is naming.... and this video is living proof.. as soonest he started putting attention to Dimebag he realize how stupid was to put the great dime on the previous list, and that's how it is with almost every guitar player on the list... No guitarist sounded like Zappa. His oeuvre was weird, complex, eclectic, dADaesque, often puerile, sometimes inspired, sometimes god-awful, but as a guitarist, I'll take his playing on "Hot Rats", still my favorite Zappa album, still one of my favorite albums, period; I enjoy his solos (and songs) as much now as I did in 1969. On "Hot Rats", he (mostly) took a vacation from his ubiquitous out-of-left-field finger-in-your-eye goofball stuff and, musically, played it straight up.

Completely agree about Tom Morello and Bonamassa. Was really weirded out past couple years when Bonamass was plastered all over the place. Hammett, IMO, doesn't get the credit he deserves, maybe not technically but definitely when it comes to influence and being a legend. He's heavily influenced by Hendrix, hence the wah and the blues fusion. Zappa and Vai are linked, as you already know. It took me a lifetime to "get it" with Zappa, but it just clicked one day - guy was a genius. If you dig one you'll likely dig the other. With Vai, his best album, IMO, is Flex-Able...which happens to have the most Zappa influence, ha! Keith is Keith, dude is a legend. What sounds "simple" to most people, especially guitar players, is not - the guy is a song writing genius and I doubt most could pull off what he does with ease. Jack White...I have never heard of anyone who considers him a great guitar player? Slash agree. But what he accomplished at the age he accomplished it is just mind blowing. I think you should be more impressed with whoever produced/engineered that album Vs his skill, lol. Zakk, agree.

I did this a few years ago, and of course your opinions change over time. I appreciate Joe more now. Tom's done some interesting music as well. I've always liked Kirk, and he seems like a super cool guy. I love the rock/blues style but I think it seemed like an odd fit for a speed metal band, but that's also what made them sound like "Metallica".
I do like some Zappa stuff for sure, I just can't listen to it for long and I have to be in a mood for it. At times it seems he did things "odd" just as a gratuitous way to be "odd". Joe's Garage is great, no doubt. Vai's also great, and I wore out more than a few of his cassettes back in the day. But he's another I need to be in a mood for, and that's not often.
Keith is great, simple but great. He fits the band very well which is what the goal is anyway. And I've always loved The Stones. Slash ia great in the studio but it bugged me that he could never pull it off live for a long time, so that makes it less impressive. He's changed and gotten more consistent over the years, which is good to see.
Thanks for the thoughts, man! Good stuff! Part of the reason I did this a few years back was to be proven wrong and learn more about these guys, which did happen and kind of what I hoped for! All good stuff. :)

Dime has some psychotic picking techniques too. Go check out Slaughtered. The chuggy riff at the end is super crazy picking. There is also a crazy ass groove riff in This Love. It seems like you’re taking your approach differently now. Good job man. 👍

As of today.. 500k views... 30k thumb downs, only 5k thumbs up. WOW! I get what you're saying. There's just so many factors, though. From the standpoint of the players, the fact we are even talking about them is significant. Secondly, this concept of "value" is obviously subjective. Do you think Bach was overrated? Was Van Gogh overrated? They were supremely underrated in their time, for sure... only to be discovered after their death. If Vai tires your ear, would you stand to hear Chopin for more than 5 minutes? Overall, good follow-up vid!

It's difficult not to get triggered when these ratings come out. But I get it.I also don't mean to trigger anyone with my opinions(we all know what they're worth) I would have discussions/arguments with fellow guitarists about Hendrix , I love a few concert songs from Hendrix but most of his live music sounds to me like he stopped practicing. Dont get me wrong , I've heard versions live of Stone Free that were beyond incredible and to this day still give me goose bumps. But I always look for consistancy , technique and sparks of brilliance. Roy Clark would be a perfect example. Another would be Robin Trower. IMO his studio albums can be a bit boring but his live stuff is to die for.

I just don't see the point in talking crap about music. It's all so subjective and people get very emotionally attached to their favorites, so that's why you're getting a lot of pushback.
I always had a lot more respect for musicians who could appreciate the positive things about players and styles they weren't necessarily fans of, as soon as they start sounding bitter it kinda kills the vibe for me. Music is love, unlike other topics like politics, just move on if you don't like it, there's no reason to bring all this negativity into it.

Q: How many guitars players do you need for changing a light bulb ??
A: At least 10, One to change the light bulb and 9 to say that they can do that better .

I think the problem with doing these videos is that people become so completely offended and enraged while forgetting or not really understanding the premise of the video. One person's opinion is just that "Their Opinion". If anyone else has such a great opinion, make your own channel and do your own videos. It's not the end of the world to listen to someone else's opinion, you won't be physically or psychologically injured by it. You may disagree but it's not necessary to berate someone for their own personal opinion. Would any of you want to be abused or berated for your personal opinions?????

I think the main problem is that making a video like that gives a lot of people the feeling that the creator tries to present a very subjective topic as something factual. Stuff like that isn't really well suited for youtube because posting a video here will always be a monologue without really creating a discussion despite having the comments. Really subjective topics like this one that should lead to a discussion of opinions are better suited for stuff like reddit or forums in general.

Totally respect your opinions on all of these guitarists dude. I will say, for what it's worth, I saw Slash at the Norva in Norfolk VA some years ago and his chops and overall playing were absolutely killer! Without his past gallon of Vodka a day habit he can definitely play his own stuff live now 😆. Cheers man; rock on!

Man... you gotta change your perspective on what a good musician actually is. There is no one better than Keith Richards at laying down the perfect guitar part for a song. He's written probably 50 of the greatest riffs of all time and co wrote some of the best music in rock n roll history. So what if his fingers don't move like Jeff beck... a true musicians greatest tool is their mind, not their fingers. Richards was a genius, and if you ask me, he was far under rated and often only celebrated for his drug taking abilities and not his incredible musical gift.

Watched your original video. You were pretty spot one. I will agree Jack White is the absolute worst. The only thing I disagree with is Zappa. I guess its a preference thing but when I heard Hot Rats I was blown away with his solos especially on Overnight Sensation. 9 out of 10 is not bad sir

To call Slash overrated with reference to his Appetite period means you haven't listened much to the recent stuff with myles Kennedy and the conspirators. Musicality and technicality has improved at least ten-fold. Beneath the Savage Sun ... a favorite of mine. Enjoy it

Best compliment - never a wasted note. I heard this in describing George Harrison.

Malmsteen offered a quote that I felt was on the money, as pertains to Steve Vai. This was in a magazine interview, and I’ve paraphrased it here:
“Steve is an incredible talent as a musician. His ability as a guitar player is amazing. His playing isn’t very melodic, so I don’t enjoy a lot of his music.”

The only great White Stripes album is White Blood Cells. Learning how to play those songs makes you a competent guitar player and a better songwriter. A great place for relative newbies to start and build their skills to a certain level.
