Zappa wasn't a guitarist? You know nothing about Zappa. He was one of the most versatile of all rock guitarists and he was great on the instrument. Up there with Hendrix and Kath. This guy knows nothing. He is a troll.

kirk and dime lean heavy on hammer ons and pull offs in the pentatonic scale and then cleverly(or maybe uncleverly) slide the scale quickly up and down the neck as needed....this may seem silly but both have made amazing musical moments using this technique

Personally I like hearing people's opinions outside of the rock/metal hivemind...it's extremely refreshing. As an example there are plenty of normie conformies who only ever bang on about Metallica (I'm not throwing shade at Metallica, they're a great band), but listening to these people and how closed their world is musically is painful. I would rather listen to the opinions of someone with extensive musical knowledge who has perhaps become more cynical/jaded, than the vast majority who have literally only listened to 20 albums in their lives.
This must be a satire video. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but contrary to general belief, not every opinion is equal. Some of them stand on better, stronger arguments than others. Now, I would place some of these guitarists on the same list myself, but his reasoning seems odd to me. E.g. Hammett, who I would place on this list for sure even though he was one of the most influencial guitarists for me growing up. Kirk definitely plays more bluesy riffs than your ordinary metal guitarrists does, but most of the time it fits perfectly with James's vision and they kind of compliment each other. Kirk's weaknesses are on totally different areas - in versatilty, for example. Dimebag Darrell was a unique sound, and made Pantera's riffs something that I still compare "southern U.S." metal to. He was also incredibly clean, technical player considering the style, so I really don't understand why someone would actually have an opinion to put him on this kind of a list. Morello used guitar as a percussion as well as a melody instrument, and gave RATM its signature sound, which still stands out from all its copycats. Every guitar player who has tried to play those licks with the same fluidity knows how genius Morello actually is. And let's not forget that inventing is a thing, and copying it is something different. Not even touching on the other players on the list. Yea, something tells me that either this guy is trolling, or is the kind of a guitarist who has a very superficial understanding of different styles, and is fine with it. In other words, it's worthwhile to take caution when approaching is "opinions".
I kinda felt his comment to steve vai when it comes to tone cause I can't listen to any of his stuff for more than 1 song aswell, but obviously hes not overrated thats just personal preference, cause he himself says steve is a very good technical player, since thats the only objektiv thing about guitar ability, I don't rly get the rating

All those ten much overrated guitar players on his list combined aren't even 1% of Jimmy Hendrix. Hendrix is entirely in his own class, no one has ever came close like him in style, techniques, originality, creativity, showmanship, personality and fashion. Hendrix is a world history icon, those ten on his list are just cheap clowns.
He should have mentioned Clapton, I mean, thinking about his era I believe there were guitar players way more interesting and imaginative than Clapton at that time, even composing good songs, just to mention a few: Gary Moore, Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Jimmy Page, and I think even Blackmore or Gilmour were more creative than Clapton...

I'd say Frank Zappa is rather underrated than overrated - ask any under 40 for a top 20 list of guitar players and you probably won't find Zappa in those lists.
I agree. It's not like Zappa is (to my limited experience) touted as a great guitarist anyway. So it's a bit hard to be overrated. Anycase, his appeal was very quirky and not due to musicianship.

I have to respectfully disagree with Hendrix being overrated. I get that there's personal opinion and all, but the man basically reinvented the guitar on a conceptual level. It's kinda hard to call him overrated when he did so much for music and culture. Back then using a distorted tone live would've gotten you laughed out of the venue. That was until Hendrix came along and showed everyone how it was actually done. That's just one instance of his genius at work. Clapton I 100% agree with though. He released some damn good stuff with Cream, but he starts to sound rather bland afterwards.

I understand what he's trying to say and I think I agree. Take a look at the infamous "butt-rock" era of Metallica or whatever you wanna call it. Load and Reload are essentially heavy blues rock records, nothing wrong with it just a different style. I think that's what Kirk was really meant to play. He was a huge Hendrix fan as most notably recognized from his love of strictly blues based solos and wah pedal use. I think he happened to just be a young blues rock guitarist living in SF as the thrash metal scene began to explode. Obviously his name is synonomous with Metallicas and their sound NOW. But had he come out in the mid 70s or hell even now, do you really think he'd be in a thrash metal band? A for the record, while Kirk did write some riffs MOST of what you hear is from the mind and hands of James

@@Anthony-nk4ky you are right to a degree. But i think its kirk’s blues sensibilities that made metallica’s leads stand out amongst the megadeth and slayers of the world. They were as technical as was needed but way more melodic. A good example is the creeping death solo. Also, James is most definitely the quintessential riff writer of Metallica but some of the most iconic metallica riffs are kirks (creeping death, master of puppets chorus and spider riff, sandman)
As a guitar player I wouldn't waste my time putting another musician down. I don't see the point. But on this list the most glaring error to me is Frank Zappa. I don't think you could be more wrong. His guitar playing as well as his music is startlingly beautiful and brilliant. He had everything--melody, dynamics, tone, and virtuosity. And one of the best things about his guitar playing is that he never played outside of the needs of the song. No wanking.
Nonsense. Zappa is one of my favourite artists of all time but his guitar playing is pretty much just noodling over a one-chord reggae groove. He was many awesome things but lead guitar playing was not one of them. That's why he hired the best of the best - Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Ray White etc.

He's a great rhythm guitarist who needs somebody like Mick Taylor to complement him. Mick taylor probably doesn't think he needs Keith Rihards. But it was their collaboration that made the early seventies the golden era of the Stones.
Keith Richards and Ringo Starr are both "parts" players - they come up with GREAT, iconic, parts for songs, and play them with STYLE. Simple as that. They are NOT technicians, which may throw some who approach things from that angle. They're musicians who play for the SONG. In that way, yeah, they're great players. And Ringo = metronome.
Yeah, way too many people have busted on Ringo. It makes you wonder if they've actually listened to the Beatle catalogue. He was inventive and unique throughout his time with the fab four---and yes, as metronomic as they come. Keith Richards was asked who was better, him or Ronnie Wood - he answered "we are both terrible, but when we play together it just works" - music is about bringing joy to people, and if "overrated" people bring joy to millions then so be it.

Anyone can play what Keith plays, but no one wrote the riffs that Keith plays. Keith did. Iconic beginnings like Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, Honky Tonk Woman, Can't You Hear Me Knockin, and on and on.

When it comes to GUITARISTS Keith and many many metal/rock guitarists such are the ones mentioned here also have competition in Flamenco, Classical and other non-rock releated musical genres. Is Keith better then Paco De Lucia or Paco Pena if we want to be more modern? Most rock music out there is monophonic and in 4/4. Most flamenco music is polyphonic and not in 4/4. Keith is great he embodies the spirit of rock n roll but we also have to be honest and admit that the so called "guitar" community is just ROCK community... I hardly see non rock guitarists on any top 10 guitarist lists which is stupid. When Paco De Lucia was alive he out shredded almost any shredder that is usually on these lists.
Keith Richards was never over rated. Everyone knows he's a riff master, rhythm guitar player with great stage presence. Nobody thinks he's a great technical player.

I agree about Keith Richards. He has come out with some memorable riffs but I think the Stones would have been screwed if he had been the only Guitarist. In my opinion Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood were and are far better.

You may just be basically defining "sloppy" as being "rhythms that are not triplets or powers of one-half." Lol. If you actually listen to his record Guitar, you may change your mind once you understand. I initially was not acclimated to his use of rhythm, but once I realized it and got used to it, it opened my guitar enjoyment world. And now I love it

I thought Frank was an odd mention on this list. I've been around a while and I just don't ever remember hearing a lot about how great a guitarist he was. It was always more about the songs themselves and his views. So to me, kind of odd to think of him as overrated.
Saw Frank live at a Halloween show in NYC. He did Black Napkins. Best guitar solo ever! I've seen Page, Fripp, Howe, etc...All great, but this one live melted my ears off (in a good way). I agree with all on this list, except Zappa. Exchange him with Clapton, that's an overrated hack. Never understood rhe 'God' tag, they got it backwards, "Dog".

Dimebag isn't even famous or highly rated. You first need to be highly rated/famous/high profile to be overrated. Sure, if you are really truly terrible and in a band that is somewhat know, then yes maybe you can be more overrated than a great player in a similar band. But most overrated guitar players are going to be super famous.

I never liked Ringo as a drummer myself until I had to learn some Beatles songs for a cover band I was working in. He “sounds” simple to the average ear but once you try to play his material, you find out just how unusual and Damn good Ringo was!
You are spot on. The drummer in my band used to bash Ringo all the time..... but to this day, he cannot play Here Comes the Sun without losing count. And he is a jazz prog rock drummer....lol
It could be that this guy is a Canadian and he's tired of hearing Rush on repeat on his local rock radio station...still, even if Rush is not your speed, it's undeniable that usually when people talk about them, they really only praise Geddy's bass technique and Neil's drumming and lyricism, despite Alex being a great guitar player, having founded the band in the first place and having composed almost their entire catalogue with Geddy. If anything, he deserves more recognition, not less.

I don't really see where the overrated comes from, the first "over" word that comes to mind when I think of him is "overshadowed". He was also done kinda dirty during the 80's, with Geddy going on his new wave, synth-laden craze and giving him room for one solo per track and maybe some rhythm parts here and there...

What someone would think of with Zappa's playing as sloppy is actually a mix of the more raw, gutbucket stylings of certain Texas blues guitarists and a very deep understanding of integrating complex polyrhythms into simple mid-paced vamps as well as skilled use of different modes. Its pretty amazing on how many people will just gloss over the fact that he had such an expert level understanding of music theory, but then again, most people just don't care about that sort of thing.

I just saw this after I already commented. His tone was great and new, but his rhythm and timing set him apart from all other guitarists at the time. There's a lot of guys that can shred some leads, but the body of the song is rhythm.
He lost all credibility when his first pick for overrated guitarist was Dime. I didn’t even make it through the entire sentence when I saw Dime on the screen before I clicked off. I’ve seen him play right in front of me. The man was a guitar god. What next, Stevie Ray Vaughn sucks too? I could see the edge from U2 topping that list but Dime? Funny thing, everyone on the list are extremely well accomplished guitarists with incredibly successful careers and catalogues, many of whom were an inspiration and definitive influence to thier generation.

His criticism of Dimebag I don't agree with, Dimebag developed a unique sound over time from their first power metal music, he grew loads as a player. He's right with Steve Vai and Slash though, I loved them both 20 years ago when I played guitar but looking back Slash hasn't grown as a player at all in 40 years and wasn't as much as a victim of Axl Rose as was made out to be. The only Steve Vai tracks I can listen to are him in Whitesnake or David Lee Roth where his time is limited.

Full disclosure, I'm a drummer so take these comments with a grain of salt. Where does creativity fall when considering how good a musician is? Technically Keith isn't a virtuoso. But creatively some of the simplistic licks/hooks he's created are some of the best I've ever heard. Anyone with any rhythm can play Satisfaction. But it is a mesmerizing lick. And he has created another 6 to 10 just like that one. Ginger Baker is technically one of the best rock/jazz drummers I ever heard. But if I wanted a studio drummer for a great hard rock song there are a number of drummers I'd take before him who aren't as technically proficient. Liberty Devito for instance, drummer for Billy Joel. He is what I refer to as a great "less is more" drummer. His feel is fantastic. He plays with his whole body. He dances with his kit. I love his approach. He could do more but he is really 'tasty' when it comes to building up to and placing his fills and accents and doesn't overly use them. I think keith is like that. A 'less is more' guitarist.
Frank Zappa's greatness does not reside in guitar playing, or any one-dimensional aspect. He transcends categories. As an artist and composer he is definitely NOT overrated!

kirk and dime lean heavy on hammer ons and pull offs in the pentatonic scale and then cleverly(or maybe uncleverly) slide the scale quickly up and down the neck as needed....this may seem silly but both have made amazing musical moments using this technique

@The-Art-of-Guitar, I don't think it's satire it's just his opinions. You think they're great guitarists...he thinks otherwise. Personally I like hearing people's opinions outside of the rock/metal hivemind...it's extremely refreshing. As an example there are plenty of normie conformies who only ever bang on about Metallica (I'm not throwing shade at Metallica, they're a great band), but listening to these people and how closed their world is musically is painful. I would rather listen to the opinions of someone with extensive musical knowledge who has perhaps become more cynical/jaded, than the vast majority who have literally only listened to 20 albums in their lives.
This must be a satire video. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but contrary to general belief, not every opinion is equal. Some of them stand on better, stronger arguments than others.
Now, I would place some of these guitarists on the same list myself, but his reasoning seems odd to me. E.g. Hammett, who I would place on this list for sure even though he was one of the most influencial guitarists for me growing up. Kirk definitely plays more bluesy riffs than your ordinary metal guitarrists does, but most of the time it fits perfectly with James's vision and they kind of compliment each other. Kirk's weaknesses are on totally different areas - in versatilty, for example.
Dimebag Darrell was a unique sound, and made Pantera's riffs something that I still compare "southern U.S." metal to. He was also incredibly clean, technical player considering the style, so I really don't understand why someone would actually have an opinion to put him on this kind of a list.
Morello used guitar as a percussion as well as a melody instrument, and gave RATM its signature sound, which still stands out from all its copycats. Every guitar player who has tried to play those licks with the same fluidity knows how genius Morello actually is. And let's not forget that inventing is a thing, and copying it is something different.
Not even touching on the other players on the list.

Hendrix is entirely in his own class, no one has ever came close like him in style, techniques, originality, creativity, showmanship, personality and fashion. He should have mentioned Clapton, I mean, thinking about his era I believe there were guitar players way more interesting and imaginative than Clapton at that time, even composing good songs, just to mention a few: Gary Moore, Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Jimmy Page, and I think even Blackmore or Gilmour were more creative than Clapton...

This dude is something else. I went ahead and listened to one of his videos of him actually playing. Could not find another one or I would have gave him a second chance. He is a scale runner. I have to respectfully disagree with Hendrix being overrated. I get that there's personal opinion and all, but the man basically reinvented the guitar on a conceptual level. It's kinda hard to call him overrated when he did so much for music and culture.
Back then using a distorted tone live would've gotten you laughed out of the venue. That was until Hendrix came along and showed everyone how it was actually done. That's just one instance of his genius at work.
Clapton I 100% agree with though. He released some damn good stuff with Cream, but he starts to sound rather bland afterwards.

I understand what he's trying to say and I think I agree. Take a look at the infamous "butt-rock" era of Metallica or whatever you wanna call it. Load and Reload are essentially heavy blues rock records, nothing wrong with it just a different style. I think that's what Kirk was really meant to play. He was a huge Hendrix fan as most notably recognized from his love of strictly blues based solos and wah pedal use. I think he happened to just be a young blues rock guitarist living in SF as the thrash metal scene began to explode. Obviously his name is synonomous with Metallicas and their sound NOW. But had he come out in the mid 70s or hell even now, do you really think he'd be in a thrash metal band? A for the record, while Kirk did write some riffs MOST of what you hear is from the mind and hands of James

@@Anthony-nk4ky you are right to a degree. But i think its kirk’s blues sensibilities that made metallica’s leads stand out amongst the megadeth and slayers of the world. They were as technical as was needed but way more melodic. A good example is the creeping death solo. Also, James is most definitely the quintessential riff writer of Metallica but some of the most iconic metallica riffs are kirks (creeping death, master of puppets chorus and spider riff, sandman)
As a guitar player I wouldn't waste my time putting another musician down. I don't see the point. But on this list the most glaring error to me is Frank Zappa. I don't think you could be more wrong. His guitar playing as well as his music is startlingly beautiful and brilliant. He had everything--melody, dynamics, tone, and virtuosity. And one of the best things about his guitar playing is that he never played outside of the needs of the song. No wanking.

Nonsense. Zappa is one of my favourite artists of all time but his guitar playing is pretty much just noodling over a one-chord reggae groove. He was many awesome things but lead guitar playing was not one of them. That's why he hired the best of the best - Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Ray White etc.

Rush was the band that the term "Raging Mediocrity" was coined for, they had what like 3 decent songs back in the 80's, they had a great drummer though... As far as Keith Richards goes, are you kidding me? Did he hold a place among metal's godfathers, Jimmy Paige, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi and Jimmi Hendrix? No but he was without a doubt one of the godfathers of Rock and Roll! Kirk Hammett, look I was a huge Dave Mustaine fan and spent years coming to terms with Kirk replacing him in Metallica but at the end of the day he is an amazing guitarist and blues influence or no was a huge part of 4 of the greatest riff and solo heavy thrash metal albums ever made!!! Most rock music out there is monophonic and in 4/4. Most flamenco music is polyphonic and not in 4/4. Keith is great he embodies the spirit of rock n roll but we also have to be honest and admit that the so called "guitar" community is just ROCK community... I hardly see non rock guitarists on any top 10 guitarist lists which is stupid. When Paco De Lucia was alive he out shredded almost any shredder that is usually on these lists.

Saw Frank live at a Halloween show in NYC. He did Black Napkins. Best guitar solo ever! I've seen Page, Fripp, Howe, etc...All great, but this one live melted my ears off (in a good way). I agree with all on this list, except Zappa. Exchange him with Clapton, that's an overrated hack. Never understood rhe 'God' tag, they got it backwards, "Dog".

Dimebag isn't even famous or highly rated. You first need to be highly rated/famous/high profile to be overrated. Sure, if you are really truly terrible and in a band that is somewhat know, then yes maybe you can be more overrated than a great player in a similar band. But most overrated guitar players are going to be super famous.

I never liked Ringo as a drummer myself until I had to learn some Beatles songs for a cover band I was working in. He “sounds” simple to the average ear but once you try to play his material, you find out just how unusual and Damn good Ringo was!

You are spot on. The drummer in my band used to bash Ringo all the time..... but to this day, he cannot play Here Comes the Sun without losing count. And he is a jazz prog rock drummer....lol

It could be that this guy is a Canadian and he's tired of hearing Rush on repeat on his local rock radio station...still, even if Rush is not your speed, it's undeniable that usually when people talk about them, they really only praise Geddy's bass technique and Neil's drumming and lyricism, despite Alex being a great guitar player, having founded the band in the first place and having composed almost their entire catalogue with Geddy. If anything, he deserves more recognition, not less.

@@tacobell5150 he isn't a guitar god by any stretch of the imagination, but he can definitely play and write. I don't really see where the overrated comes from, the first "over" word that comes to mind when I think of him is "overshadowed". He was also done kinda dirty during the 80's, with Geddy going on his new wave, synth-laden craze and giving him room for one solo per track and maybe some rhythm parts here and there...

What someone would think of with Zappa's playing as sloppy is actually a mix of the more raw, gutbucket stylings of certain Texas blues guitarists and a very deep understanding of integrating complex polyrhythms into simple mid-paced vamps as well as skilled use of different modes. Its pretty amazing on how many people will just gloss over the fact that he had such an expert level understanding of music theory, but then again, most people just don't care about that sort of thing.

I just saw this after I already commented. His tone was great and new, but his rhythm and timing set him apart from all other guitarists at the time. There's a lot of guys that can shred some leads, but the body of the song is rhythm.
He lost all credibility when his first pick for overrated guitarist was Dime. I didn’t even make it through the entire sentence when I saw Dime on the screen before I clicked off. I’ve seen him play right in front of me. The man was a guitar god. What next, Stevie Ray Vaughn sucks too? I could see the edge from U2 topping that list but Dime? Bruh, somebody dropped you on your head. 🤦🏻♂️

@@khillo1001 well, that's literally the definition of overrated. They are liked by a lot of people and have great carreers, but in his opinion they do not deserve to be so adored, due to their skill or song writing.
Oh yeah its real funny, they were "an inspiration and definitive influence" to a generation, a generation that says "let me bend over and take your clot shot without question, then can I lick your boots too? " yeah that generation.
His criticism of Dimebag I don't agree with, Dimebag developed a unique sound over time from their first power metal music, he grew loads as a player. He's right with Steve Vai and Slash though, I loved them both 20 years ago when I played guitar but looking back Slash hasn't grown as a player at all in 40 years and wasn't as much as a victim of Axl Rose as was made out to be. The only Steve Vai tracks I can listen to are him in Whitesnake or David Lee Roth where his time is limited.

I am a Bassist, and I was almost torn to shreds saying this to a bunch of guitarists I know. They wanted me on the BBQ until I explained the same thing about Billy Sheehan.

He basically said Ronnie was probably better but that together they were better than any ten. That's why Keith is the best in my book. It really comes down to your criteria, doesn't it? You and I don't have the same criteria and it would probably be pointless to argue about who's criteria is the best, right?

Full disclosure, I'm a drummer so take these comments with a grain of salt.
Where does creativity fall when considering how good a musician is? Technically Keith isn't a virtuoso. But creatively some of the simplistic licks/hooks he's created are some of the best I've ever heard.
Anyone with any rhythm can play Satisfaction. But it is a mesmerizing lick. And he has created another 6 to 10 just like that one.
Ginger Baker is technically one of the best rock/jazz drummers I ever heard. But if I wanted a studio drummer for a great hard rock song there are a number of drummers I'd take before him who aren't as technically proficient.
Liberty Devito for instance, drummer for Billy Joel.
He is what I refer to as a great "less is more" drummer. His feel is fantastic. He plays with his whole body. He dances with his kit. I love his approach.
He could do more but he is really 'tasty' when it comes to building up to and placing his fills and accents and doesn't overly use them.
I think keith is like that. A 'less is more' guitarist.
Frank Zappa's greatness does not reside in guitar playing, or any one-dimensional aspect. He transcends categories. As an artist and composer he is definitely NOT overrated!
