Played this last night and did the first two missions. Took me a bit to get used to the janky controls gain, but once I got my feel back for what I was doing I was right back in my child hood. what a time to be alive.
With a few tweaks to the button mappings in the Switch system settings, you can get modern controls for hip-fire. Manual aiming down sights remains janky though.😂
Possibly my favourite game of all time. So much time spent in the multiplayer, running around with the maulers, testing out the different bots, checking achievements at the end of each game, then trying to beat the fast times in single player to unlock cool stuff. This is probably one of the few games that will push me to get the subscription.
The subscription I must say is well worth it so long as you're into retro games. And the family pass in particular for a group of friends is great value.
Not sure if someone mentioned it already, but the reason Nintendo had to put those games into a separate app is Japanese law, not their own quirkiness. According to Japanese law, a single application that's accessible to children cannot contain any content that is rated mature, not even if it's blocked by parental controls. An app can only have a single rating, and apps accessible to children can't ever have mature contents in there. So they had to create a separate app for that content. And I guess they found it easier to just use the same set up everywhere rather than having those games in the normal N64 app in the US and Europe and in a separate app in Japan.
I had this back in the day and I don’t remember it being so bad in performance but at the same time this game was really pushing the N64 to its limits so much so that the expansion pack was required for the game to even be able to run.

The bot system of perfect dark is still something I feel like I'm chasing all these years later. They could make it so much fun and you could crank them up to be full on ghosts killing you without mercy

This was such a weird game when I was playing it as a kid. I remember being like this goldeneye clone is amazing! Wait why are their aliens!?!?! Now I have an alien buddy!?! Heck yes! Very excited to play it again, especially that opening level
Your best option is probably a 3rd party controller like the 8bitdo Pro 2 or 8bitdo Ultimate, where you can preset custom profiles specifically for games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. That way you can have controls appropriate for these games, while switching back to normal controls for everything else by tapping the profile button.
You know, even while having the Pro 2 controller, I haven't thought of this. I ended up getting their mod kit for the original N64 controller and I've been using it for that authentic feel.
8bitdo is trash. they feel good but the quality control is abysmal. the dpads misread inputs and every one that i bought within a year starts having trouble charging. The popularity of this brand is a bad symptom of internet echochamber.
Are the multiplayer 'bots' still accessible in this port, so you can play 'solo' multiplayer games? That was my favourite memory of playing PD back in the day.
Most likely going to be US/EUR only due to the fact the original N64 game didn't see a Japanese release, which is funny considering Live & Reloaded on Xbox DID come out in Japan.
There is not a large enough customer base for that to be rentable for the companies involved, specially with something like Perfect Dark which is a mess of licences.
I too would love to be able to buy it. It's one of my favs of all time and I'd love to be able to pick up my Switch 15 years from now and play PD officially and portably. If they sold the 360 remake on Switch I'd buy it immediately.
Perfect Dark was one of the few things I was excited about from the direct. Yes, I'll be playing it. Tried it for a bit and absolutely hated the default control setup. Thanks so much for the controller adjustment tips. Those changes are making it far better. Edit: I'm confused. I did the changes while in the institute. Worked fine. I went into a combat simulation and had to pick the 1.2 control options again, before going into that game mode. However when going in, the controls were not the same as when I changed all the settings in the institution.

I play 98% handheld and as with Goldeneye I wish they’d have made some tweaks for modern controls. Even with the tips it’s a bit fiddly and makes it frustrating enough that I often just give up. I’ll give another go with the tips you guys gave and hopefully I can finally adjust.
Why the fuck you want new controlls? The games are 25years old, its running and playing as they are supposed to!!! You suck at gaming, and thats okay, but dont blame the game!
It's really cool that Perfect Dark finally came to the Switch (hopefully Conker joins Joanna on NSO someday as well), though IDK if I'd play this port over the Xbox 360/One remaster on Xbox Live Arcade or Rare Replay... But I'm certainly happy for all Switch owners who finally get to experience this gem if they've never played it before!
Goldeneye was the best thing ever when it came out and I never thought something could be better UNTIL perfect dark came out! It blew goldeneye out of the water. Man I miss games where beating a level in a certain time would unlock a cheat, sometimes useful and sometimes just big head mode

I am certain more M-rated games will appear on the N64 line-up. I do expect other games like Shadowman, the other Turok games to appear on there, as well as Nightmare Creatures.
Why are we not seeing Perfect Dark on Xbox Series X... Perfect Dark Zero is my all-time favorite First-Person Shooter. I heard those awesome songs in the game and bought the CD for the music. The artwork was awesome, too.
I finally managed to get one of the N64 controllers from the Nintendo Store, turned up just in time for this and I have to say it has made a huge difference playing the N64 games on the NSO service. I can finally play Goldeneye aswell without messing about with button mapping of my pro controller
I've got a couple of third party PDP Gamecube controllers, but they apparently do not support button remapping/dual stick configuration in the Switch's menu. I imagine this is basically unplayable then if I want dual stick support and the ability to invert X and Y on the stick? I was watching the footage (4:09), and it looks like dude is using standard X (horizontal) movement on his right stick as opposed to inverted. Does anyone know if the standard Gamecube controller layout defaults to use the 4 face buttons in the same way the N64 controller used the 4 C directional buttons?
Honestly, this is gonna give me goosebumps and was a great surprise at the direct. I actually got perfect duck on release back in the day have mixed emotions because let’s just say I was going for a little bit of heartbreak at the time. I’m perfect dark kind of help me get through that, and back in the day this game was really something special and it really pushed the N64 so much to the point where the expansion pack was required for the game to even run, great review as always guys
Definitely one of the greatest classics of my generation. Seriously underrated, and ahead of its time, and I do wish they would fully remake it instead of just emulating it, but the ability to play it at all is nice and when I can, I'm looking forward to playing this again after all these years.
Once the controls are proberly configurated, this game is still amazing to play. There is much to see, do and master in this game. Even the atmosphere hasn't lost its charm. I'm suprised how much fun I have - even the not so top fps aren't much of an issue for me anymore.

Oh man.. My bro and I tried for 100% achievement back in the day. I remember vsing the darksim bots in co-op multiplayer. We would have to camp in a corner and set up laptop drone guns and proximity mines around us while we sniped them with the farsight gun.. I think this is the root of my anxiety 😂
Hey, I did the control changes that you suggested but they don't seem to carry over into the multiplayer mode. How do I implement them in multiplayer?? I've looked around the options and I'm lost.
I let my online sub lapse and I haven't missed it too much. I'll resub again sometime when there is a sale. The Switch is essentially my jrpg and retro indie box. :)
I know it’s not rated M but it’s a crime that Nintendo hasn’t put Mishief Makers on the N64 app yet. Probably one of the best games on the entire console in my opinion. I think very few people played it at its release like I did but I think it will find a lot of love this day and age. It would also be a very easily adaptable game control wise, that uses the DPad which wouldn’t need to be a pain to reconfigure on switch. I really appreciate you posting the control set up scheme you used. I don’t know why Rare replay which came out ages ago use proper updates control schemes for the game and controllers respectfully but the switch makes it a living nightmare to do it. I remember playing goldeneye when it was put on switch after 5 min I shut it off hooked up my N64 and just played it there and felt completely natural. I can’t imagine it taking to much work for Nintendo just just implement a more modern control scheme as people playing it for the first time are just going to think it’s bad if they can’t jump into what they are used to for FPS games.
One of my favorite games of all time. We used to customize the bot to resemble people we disliked, poured many hours of deathmatch into that one. In between all the direct announcements, Prime 4 and Zelda❤, I noticed there was a game that came out last week that was not mentioned in your new game video which i am curieus about. It is called "bug and seek". Do you think you could do a review on that?
During the direct, I was silently shaking with delight at the Metroid Prime 4 trailer. This one however, I actually screamed with excitement. I love Perfect Dark. I actually have the Rare Replay version on my Xbox with enhanced textures and audio etc. However I actually prefer this version. I think the dialogue sounds too clean when uncompressed on the xbla version and I prefer the art style and texture work on the original N64. Playing with the standard controls still feels second nature to me and in some ways feels more in line than the dual stick layout on the xbla one. That being said I did struggle to play the NSO version of Turok; the Night dive port spoiled me because I do think something like Turok benefits from dual stick controls considering how frantic the gameplay is. Something about Perfect Dark, while still hectic especially with the death match mode, feels more methodical with those original controls.
play this one. skip the new ones. the team that made this was long gone from rare when the new ones were made and you can tell. the level design is awful in the new one.
I have been playing the XBLA port for the past 10+ years. I played through the first level with an N64 controller... I don't have the patience to make this work properly with the Nintendo switch pro controller. I'll just go back to the XBLA remaster lol
WHATT I was so excited to play this with improved framerate.. Sad to see an N64 game is still running under 20fps… But hey it didn’t bother us back then. With the bots we were running 10fps and it’s just how it was. LOVED this game and we played it well into the GameCube and Wii lifecycles. I might need to check it out but I’m not jumping to it or anything with that sorry framerate. Thank you for going over everything for us. For those who don’t know, Perfect Dark is essentially the sequel to GoldenEye but without the 007 licensing. It’s Goldeneye DELUXE DELUXE. Same engine. But new mechanics. And every weapon has a secondary function. More customization with the multiplayer options. It’s like a goldeneye mod x1,000. There’s invisibility cloaks, a weapon you can throw on the ground that’s actually a proximity mine, there are automated turrets, a weapon that sees through walls… N-bombs…. Those damn n-bombs. The ability to disarm other players. So much fun creative stuff.
Never got to give this one a go. Sunk a lot of time into Goldeneye both single and multiplayer, but never owned this one. I hope it is still playable even without the nostalgia goggles on ;) Ps I would love to get my name in the credits, if possible. Became a subscriber a few weeks ago. "Adib MH" would be ideal, if you can squeeze me in!
Fantastic game when it released way back in 2000 and still fantastic now, but to anybody who has an Xbox One X or Series X, I'd recommend the 360 remaster through backwards compatibility over this version. Looks better and the controls don't need any tinkering. Still, it's nice to have the option to play PD portable.
I tried playing Turok and perfect Dark. It seems for the 17+ app what should be mapped to my left stick is mapped to my right stick. It wasn’t like that in the old app. It’s literally unplayable
Disappointed that it’s not in the eshop, I would’ve really loved to have replayed this game. I pretty sure it also had MP with AI and the AI was pretty decent or at least it seemed to me as I’d never play MP before. I had such fun playing the MP with my bro who was visiting from OZ. We also had a laugh playing Beetle Adventure racing - man what a game
Turok was already on switch and it's sequels to purchase, perfect dark was awesome but i prefer the remastered version on xbox included in the rare replay collection.
Somehow, I missed this since I was a PS1 player in the year 2000. So it's basically N64 Bond with better graphics? I'm curious: What makes perfect dark different than N64 Bond?
One of my favorite games of all time as well, top 3 easily. Playn it now w the N64 controller. I wish I could keep it when NSO shuts down. I'd pay w/e they'd charge. Now the only games that Switch needs are TimeSplitters and F Zero GX and I honestly don't need another console ever again...until games like Eternal Darkness get released. But with the Switch library rn I'm set.
It actually physically hurts to see someone run around with the Farsight in this game, if there's one thing I immediately learned in the original it's that when you pick that thing up, don't move and camp. Camp like your life depends on it! (Because it does.)

Golden Eye was amazing, but Perfrct Dark was next level in both storytelling and gameplay

Playing this for the first time in 10+ years and seeing the menu screen with Joanna standing over the computer was a huge nostalgia rush.
It's by far my favorite N64 game. Still play it to this day on PC via emulation.

The Rare replay version is much smoother but they have improved the NSO version in comparison to the original version though

We would have to camp in a corner and set up laptop drone guns and proximity mines around us while we sniped them with the farsight gun.. I think this is the root of my anxiety 😂
Hey, I did the control changes that you suggested but they don't seem to carry over into the multiplayer mode. How do I implement them in multiplayer?? I've looked around the options and I'm lost.

too bad the cam spy doesn't work on project 64 making some of the stages unplayable.
I let my online sub lapse and I haven't missed it too much. I'll resub again sometime when there is a sale. The Switch is essentially my jrpg and retro indie box. :)

I remember wanting this for the N64 ages ago but never getting it. I had Goldeneye, was this game just delayed like crazy or something?
I know it’s not rated M but it’s a crime that Nintendo hasn’t put Mishief Makers on the N64 app yet. Probably one of the best games on the entire console in my opinion. I think very few people played it at its release like I did but I think it will find a lot of love this day and age. It would also be a very easily adaptable game control wise, that uses the DPad which wouldn’t need to be a pain to reconfigure on switch. I really appreciate you posting the control set up scheme you used. I don’t know why Rare replay which came out ages ago use proper updates control schemes for the game and controllers respectfully but the switch makes it a living nightmare to do it. I remember playing goldeneye when it was put on switch after 5 min I shut it off hooked up my N64 and just played it there and felt completely natural. I can’t imagine it taking to much work for Nintendo just just implement a more modern control scheme as people playing it for the first time are just going to think it’s bad if they can’t jump into what they are used to for FPS games.

One of my favorite games of all time. We used to customize the bot to resemble people we disliked, poured many hours of deathmatch into that one.

Perfect Dark was our game of choice in college. 10x better than Goldeneye. Who needs studies, when the aliens keep coming?
During the direct, I was silently shaking with delight at the Metroid Prime 4 trailer. This one however, I actually screamed with excitement. I love Perfect Dark. I actually have the Rare Replay version on my Xbox with enhanced textures and audio etc.
However I actually prefer this version. I think the dialogue sounds too clean when uncompressed on the xbla version and I prefer the art style and texture work on the original N64. Playing with the standard controls still feels second nature to me and in some ways feels more in line than the dual stick layout on the xbla one.
That being said I did struggle to play the NSO version of Turok; the Night dive port spoiled me because I do think something like Turok benefits from dual stick controls considering how frantic the gameplay is. Something about Perfect Dark, while still hectic especially with the death match mode, feels more methodical with those original controls.
Man I'd love a physical release. My all time favorite shooter

play this one. skip the new ones. the team that made this was long gone from rare when the new ones were made and you can tell. the level design is awful in the new one.

I have been playing the XBLA port for the past 10+ years. I played through the first level with an N64 controller... I don't have the patience to make this work properly with the Nintendo switch pro controller. I'll just go back to the XBLA remaster lol

WHATT I was so excited to play this with improved framerate.. Sad to see an N64 game is still running under 20fps… But hey it didn’t bother us back then. With the bots we were running 10fps and it’s just how it was.
LOVED this game and we played it well into the GameCube and Wii lifecycles. I might need to check it out but I’m not jumping to it or anything with that sorry framerate. Thank you for going over everything for us.
For those who don’t know, Perfect Dark is essentially the sequel to GoldenEye but without the 007 licensing. It’s Goldeneye DELUXE DELUXE. Same engine. But new mechanics. And every weapon has a secondary function. More customization with the multiplayer options. It’s like a goldeneye mod x1,000. There’s invisibility cloaks, a weapon you can throw on the ground that’s actually a proximity mine, there are automated turrets, a weapon that sees through walls… N-bombs…. Those damn n-bombs. The ability to disarm other players. So much fun creative stuff.
It’s 007 Goldeneye superpowered! I just wish I didn’t need to be online to play offline. That’s my only gripe. It’s fun to play this gem again.
Never got to give this one a go. Sunk a lot of time into Goldeneye both single and multiplayer, but never owned this one. I hope it is still playable even without the nostalgia goggles on ;)
Ps I would love to get my name in the credits, if possible. Became a subscriber a few weeks ago. "Adib MH" would be ideal, if you can squeeze me in!
Fantastic game when it released way back in 2000 and still fantastic now, but to anybody who has an Xbox One X or Series X, I'd recommend the 360 remaster through backwards compatibility over this version. Looks better and the controls don't need any tinkering. Still, it's nice to have the option to play PD portable.
I tried playing Turok and perfect Dark. It seems for the 17+ app what should be mapped to my left stick is mapped to my right stick. It wasn’t like that in the old app. It’s literally unplayable
interesting, i played through on perfect agent just fine with the default controls.
Disappointed that it’s not in the eshop, I would’ve really loved to have replayed this game.
I pretty sure it also had MP with AI and the AI was pretty decent or at least it seemed to me as I’d never play MP before. I had such fun playing the MP with my bro who was visiting from OZ. We also had a laugh playing Beetle Adventure racing - man what a game

Turok was already on switch and it's sequels to purchase, perfect dark was awesome but i prefer the remastered version on xbox included in the rare replay collection.
Somehow, I missed this since I was a PS1 player in the year 2000. So it's basically N64 Bond with better graphics? I'm curious: What makes perfect dark different than N64 Bond?
One of my favorite games of all time as well, top 3 easily. Playn it now w the N64 controller. I wish I could keep it when NSO shuts down. I'd pay w/e they'd charge. Now the only games that Switch needs are TimeSplitters and F Zero GX and I honestly don't need another console ever again...until games like Eternal Darkness get released. But with the Switch library rn I'm set.
It actually physically hurts to see someone run around with the Farsight in this game, if there's one thing I immediately learned in the original it's that when you pick that thing up, don't move and camp. Camp like your life depends on it! (Because it does.)
