My take on an updated Samus moveset: Dash attack: The counter kick (Dread Jab: First hit is Counter (Samus Returns) Second hit is the quick shot Down tilt: Slide counter kick (Dread) Up tilt: Similar to Mii gunner's up air (using wide shot) Down Smash: Diffusion blast (Other M/Dread) Side special: Missiles with the same mechanis, however holding the button allows you to free aim (or shoot ice missiles.) Down Special: Still bomb, however holding it creates the cross bomb. Grab: Grapple beam is still used, however animations are all based on Other M's finishing moves, because those looked bad ass.
This was my first Metroid game and it was amazing. The abilities, atmosphere, fluid gameplay I loved all of it and instantly played Super Metroid after beating this game
@@rockems4959 ? I’m saying I enjoyed this game so much it made me want to try and play other Metroid games so I went to play super Metroid right after because I loved dread.

Super Metroid was my first ever Metroid game, another one on DS was after (I think it's called Hunters), then Fusion and finally Prime 3: Corruption. Seeing Dread is like a fresh coat of vibrant paint on a wall!
I mostly watched my older brother play/beat the original Metroid when I was a kid. My first Metroid game that I played myself and completed was Metroid 2: The Return of Samus on the GB! My elbows were sore from laying on the living room floor, focus locked into the little screen for hours on end!
The game definitely pays its respects to previous titles in the series. And most of all it doesn't dumb down Samus like in Other M. She is a real badass in this one and I love it.
You're absolutely right. This game is an amalgamation of everything that was good about 2D Metroid up until this point. I just wish they didn't nerf the wall jump back to Fusion status.
My first Metroid game was the original when it released for the NES, and Dread has brought back the same feeling of exhilaration mixed with frustration. I think this is a genuinely awesome game! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My first was Metroid for the nes as well but last year, I decided to play them all for the first time in order. This is the last one I have left and got a switch just to play this (and Metroid prime remastered)
My first Metroid game was Metroid on the NES. First game I fully beat as a kid. Haven't played a Metroid game since the first Metroid Prime so I think I need to jump back in now with Dread.
Me too man the OG Mother brain and the gameboy version 😂. Missed out on some of the in between stuff on GameCube etc . Git lost in castlevania, Fallout, etc lol … now heading back to Metroid lol with Dread
I've still played and beat fusion within the last two years. Such a good fucking game, mainly because the storyline and feeling is just so beautiful to me. You should get dread, I don't want to spoil anything but it continues on the storyline. It's amazing so far I've only played about 2 hours.
@@matguimond92 You sound like me when I was a child "all 2d games are stupid and I hate them". Learn to open your mind and try out games for yourself before judging. yeah, for example after he does the vertical split-beam attack where the only way to avoid it is to stand close to him, he will ALWAYS follow up with a melee attack.
My first metroid game was “Metroid II: The Return of Samus” on the original Game Boy. Been a huge fan ever since. Loving “Metroid Dread” but surprised at its difficulty.
@@dashdbz1 They are very hard but if you are a seasoned Metroid player it will come as second nature, but even new players can learn the bosses. The game awards sequence breaks and is overall such a joy to play. Best game since Super Metroid.
I've always been interested by metroid because of Smash, so I was particularly excited for dread. Except I'm now almost upset about buying it because I've already broken a controller over it. This game is clearly meant for metroid vets, so being a newcomer this experience was extremely miserable for me. It doesn't help that the help I've seen online is just a bunch of assholes going "git gud lolz 🤪." I'm better off appreciating the franchise from a third point of view.
@@Adizzyizzy That’s a shame. What is it that frustrates you? Maybe there is some mechanic you aren’t aware of, the game can feel really hard if you try to solve a puzzle without all the pieces
Never played a Metroid game in full before this. I'm about half way through and honestly it's my favorite new game of this year. It's such a breath of fresh air in a world of lifeless open world and crappy rpg elements. It feels like something that was crafted instead of constructed, if that makes sense.

The eme robots are basically like your “twin” from fusion. Those parts have stuck with me al these years back when I played it on my gameboy SP. glad to hear it’s back in dread. Literally gives you more suspense then actual horror games
This game just shows that the platformer genre can still be strong and compete with other AAA title. And Metroid Zero Mission was my first. I traded another game with a kid at my elementary school for it and became a fan ever since.
I played them in high school on my iPhone on a rom. Held up really good. That kinda started my whole metroidvania/ori and hollow knight obsessions. Got dread and the oled switch yesterday, legit cannot put it down it’s that good.
Fusion was my first so this game was amazing to see it continue. Some of the bosses absolutely made me wanna throw my switch across the room because you gotta take it slow and learn the bosses moves. I just beat it like 20 mins ago and the last boss, while challenging makes you use damn near everything you have earned up until that point. In the sea of games where you get disappointed after playing an hour of it because of all the hype, this game doesn’t let down and is a blast through and through.
Yeo Metroid even the easier titles have a depth of difficulty to them. It reminds me of Megaman which I never played that much but did a bit to see the difficulty and Castlevania which to me was easier but didn't play the hardest ones either
I really liked how the EMMI worked in this game. Having a highly dangerous element while backtracking and exploring keeps things from getting monotonous.
I’m always happy with a new Metroid game… This game almost take me a heart attack with all the excitement with exploring the new areas, getting new powers, escaping EMMI units, and even just the new enemies! I rate this game for the whole family!

@@DotHacker99 couldn't agree with you more. I was very disappointed to boot up the Switch, just to see the Dread was the only Metroid game on the Switch completely. They really should be able to port older games onto their Switch or even the last DS model. Like, people would SERIOUSLY buy these games but they make it unavailable. Which results in people making emulations. If they ever release Prime 4, they should definitely look into adding an edition that either remasters or polishes the last 3 games, and add them to Switch. I'd give them so much money for an edition like that.
@Craig Adams I do prefer the prime series to the 2D ones but also do like the 2D ones. First Metroid game was Metroid II, though Super Metroid was the *one* man. That was the one that solidified Metroid as my second favorite series in gaming (and Super being my favorite game ever...for now, until Dread possibly dethrones it). I love every aspect of this game, even down to the small details of Samus pressing against walls and such. I think/hope this game is the one that launches Metroid into the respect it has earned. I’m also pulling hard for this to be in discussion for GOTY, it honestly really should be in the top 5 given it’s quality and the lack of other standouts from this year. I’m also *SO* happy for the relentless advertising campaign Nintendo has gone on for this. The stars have aligned and it’s time for us to celebrate this gem of a game/series! 🎉🥳
Metroid Prime was my first game and it has been a part of me since then. That and Super Metroid are master pieces. (my opinion ofc.) What I love are the enviorments and the music that sets the mood in different areas and phases through the games. And how you progress during it. Playing Dread atm, not done yet, but there is no time to hesitate for me really, I'll try and enjoy my frist gameplay though it as much as possible. Thanks for a good video!
My first Metroid was the original. The game that made me fall in love with the series was Metroid prime. But the first game that I actually completed (and was the most difficult) was Metroid fusion. I remember feeling extra motivated to actually finish that game, because I was borrowing from my friend and I had to give it back on a deadline lmao.
My first Metroid was Metroid Prime, it really scared me a few times as a kid. It was also my very first First Person game, so it was something wildly new to me. After that I played Metroid Fusion, my first "classic" Metroid game and it also freaked me out. I worked out the nerve to eventually finish both and since then I became a fan and delved into the series and lore.
This sounds a lot like my experience haha. Prime had a few spooky moments but fusion really surprised me because I didn’t think a GBA game could be so suspenseful and darkly atmospheric.
Maybe they should make good new games first in house instead of garbage re releases and slop from third rate devs (like this "Metroid" game from Mercury Team, garbage)
My first Metroid games was Metroid Prime and I instantly fell in love with it. It was the first time I've ever seen a game that looked like that--I was blown away.
I always wanted to play Prime, but I never got the chance because I didn't own a GameCube. However, I grew up with the original Metroid on NES, and I've played every 2D game since, except for Samus Returns. I knew I was going to get Dread the day it came out. Super Metroid baby. The brinstar theme is just such a vibe that makes you want to keep coming back and exploring not only to get stronger but to draw out some of these awesome tracks as long as possible. Great environments and good tension. Such a gem of a game.
It's a great game with a few caveats. The music didn't seem as memorable as tracks from previous titles and some of the boss fights overstayed their welcome. Other than that it's a solid title and I'm pretty sure it's the hardest 2D Metroid game out there. You will die a LOT. Fortunately the checkpoint system is pretty forgiving and you won't lose too much time.
I don’t get how people tend to say this game is hard. I think you can beat it pretty comfortable. I honestly find Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion harder as well as several other Metroidvanias like Castlevania Circle of the Moon, Ori or Hollow Knight.
@@FelixS. super Metroid and fusion can both be beaten in an hour, don’t give me that “these are harder than this cus retro title” bullshit, I’ve speedran those titles numerous times and can still speed run both in 1-2hrs easily. this game is clearly a lot harder.

0:25 "And just so you know this footage is spoiler free" Yeah, right. It might not show any story relevant stuff, but it shows an awful lot of gameplay spoilers. At least two bosses and abilities or where to use them. Luckily I've finished the game this morning (and am now spoiler immune), but seeing these things before would have definitely robbed me of the moments of surprise, amazement or theorizing what the mysterious upgrade will be which will help me to open this funky looking door. Labeling this spoiler free does not feel like something everyone would agree. That being said, I fully agree with everything talked about in the video (except for large screen scalability. I only played it on a large screen and it looked fine to me). It is an awesome game and highly recommendable.

@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged I really enjoy all of them. Cataris reminds me of Norfair, Burenia reminds of Maridia...and so on. What i enjoyed the most were the boss fights, they get gradually tougher. Humbling/crazy story: 1st for me was OG Metroid back in high school. Thought I was an ok gamer, but was stuck somewhere and my buddy brought his cousin over to see where I was. While he was leafing through a magazine (not a Nintendo power with a Metroid walkthrough…) he was telling me where to go and not even looking. This kid was a machine! Never will forget that day.
So my first Metroid game was actually Metroid Fusion, and I fell in love with the series and the lore it had to offer. I watched the Nintendo E3 desperately hoping I was gonna get news on Prime 4 but was instead pleasantly surprised with Dread. And then I found out it was the long-awaited sequel to Fusion, which made me pre-order it pretty much instantly. As a long time Metroid fan, I can say with confidence that Metroid Dread is fantastic and anyone who is a fan of the series should definitely get it. It is AMAZING
I'm quite surprised to see more than a few outlets bemoaning how the game looks on a TV. I don't know if it's just my TV but even at 55 inches it looks good to me, the fact they chose not to use TAA helps a lot to make it look crisp with surprisingly few jaggies. Maybe it varies from TV to TV but on a decent set it looks pretty darn good to me.
Maybe it's 4k TV's? I still haven't made the switch to 4k and dread looks great on my 40 inch 1080p TV. I remember keeping a 720p TV around because standard def stuff looked much better on it. To me, playing in handheld mode would be a waste.
@@Frank-xo5he I have a 4k 60in and it looks great to me as well. The only part that looked rough was the cutscene with the friendly bird. The outline of the stairs behind them looked pretty bad. That's all I saw though.
Metroid was my first one. As a young kid I was so confused, but Super Metroid made it a lot easier. Maybe because I got older. Who knows. I’ve never played any of the Prime ones though. Always stuck to 2D.
You are missing out because to me Metroid prime might be my favorite game of all time. It was my first ever console game and it blew my mind. I have since gone back and played the 2D Metroids as well and I love them. But there’s something about the immersion of the prime games that make them extra special. Do yourself a favor and play them, perfectly translates Metroid to first person
@@MrDjentlegiant I started with the Original Metroid, and it was the first game I ever beat in 1988. When Prime was released, it just blew my mind. Being able to see things through Samus' eyes and fight the space pirates in a fully realized 3D word was amazing. Metroid Dread has been super nostalgic, and a joy to play. I agree with your assessment, anyone who's not played the Prime Games yet, once they finish Dread, they need to go play Prime.
You're not missing much imo. Prime doesn't really capture the essence of 2d Metroid (fast pace, sequence break, replay for better time and ending, etc). Is just a shooter with really weak and clunky shooting mechanics with a Metroid skin. Fans say that the world building is really good but they couldn't be more wrong. Everything in the game from the doors to the morphball corridors is tailor made for Samus to pass through, the world is not organic at all. That being said Prime 4 has potential.
This is my first metroid game and I freaking love it. I never had a switch until December, mostly played pc and console. The fact that I got this game simply because it was new and I needed to build a library was the best random/unaware buy I ever did. To simply put it I was never a fan of 2d games, they just never clicked with me and mostly because the ones I played weren't good and left a bad impression. I did watch Woods (BeatemUps) and how he mention metroid and excited he was. Thats when my curiosity peeked, but again it was 2D and my curiosity suddenly fell. Originally I was going to pick up zelda breathe of the wild as my second nintendo switch game and while doing that I saw metroid and took it thinking it was 10 bucks off at Walmart. Shock on me, but I still continued the purchase, and that's how my life got turned upside down for the best. Yes the games layout and system is difficult, mostly getting used to the map and how you traverse it (especially not being familiar with 2D games). It is a bit of a mind boogle and I did take a couple of days break from it and then hope on. This mechanic is the only truly difficult thing I see about this game as it doesn't tell you where to go (but there are guides if your truly stuck), yes the boss fights are challenging but I love dark soul games and have played 4 fromsoft games. So the boss challenge was enjoyable and gives you that badass feel and achievement (it also keeps play time longer). Over all I hope Nintendo continues the metroid series as this is definitely a game that will take new players into a hole new fun world. I can't speak for fans of the series as this is my first metroid game, but I can definitely speak as a new comer that I have been absorbed into the metroid universe and hope a new game is under consideration and soon production. So is this worth a buy, Fuck ya! I never regretted my purchase of this game and its definitely on my personal top 10 games. If your worried about the 2D aspect or even the challenge, then don't be. As mentioned there are guides to help you through. I wrote this huge ass paragraph to maybe and hopefully help any new buyers who are considering this game. I say full send that bitch and pick up a copy.
Metroid Zero Mission was my first one as a kid. Then played Fusion along with some of the Prime series. So glad to finally go back to the classic 2D side scrolling style. Dread has been amazing so far, especially the atmosphere!
First Metroid Game: Super Metroid, the year it released as I was just a wee child First thoughts: Played for about 4 hours and wow, the difficulty spikes are indeed a BIG element I did not expect as I went in totally blind, not frustrating but challenging. I MUST say I HAVE to disagree with you on the idea that it looks better handheld... not much to say about this but the screen is just too small to really show off the environments with enough fidelity to understand what I'm looking at, maybe it's just my below average eyesight though. One gripe, you said the video has no spoilers but then you showed off video from multiple boss fights and returning enemies that I've not run into yet, that was a bit disappointing. Thank you for the review.
@@kennyguevara6277 I think I honestly died more times in Dread in my first playthrough than my first playthrough of Fusion. Dread is still a must buy for a switch for me and looking forward when Prime get here.

Dash attack: The counter kick (Dread
Jab: First hit is Counter (Samus Returns)
Second hit is the quick shot
Down tilt: Slide counter kick (Dread)
Up tilt: Similar to Mii gunner's up air (using wide shot)
Down Smash: Diffusion blast (Other M/Dread)
Side special: Missiles with the same mechanis, however holding the button allows you to free aim (or shoot ice missiles.)
Down Special: Still bomb, however holding it creates the cross bomb.
Grab: Grapple beam is still used, however animations are all based on Other M's finishing moves, because those looked bad ass.

@@FelixS. super Metroid and fusion can both be beaten in an hour, don’t give me that “these are harder than this cus retro title” bullshit, I’ve speedran those titles numerous times and can still speed run both in 1-2hrs easily. this game is clearly a lot harder.
@@SBHKur0 „Clearly a lot harder“ is as subjective as „quality“ is, simpleton.
Watch your words I responded in a neutral manner, if you are overstrained by normal conversation and exchange of opinions, you should avoid topics which could hurt your tiny soul. I did speedrun Fusion on a regular base with 100% completion. I died three or four times during my first Dread run, that is less than during my first encounter with Nightmare. So don’t YOU give me your bs regarding who is right or wrong. We are talking a 100% subjective matter here, snowflake. So please stop crying, ok?
Been streaming this game, and exploring, combat, and the environment is SO much fun to experience for the first time.
Loved this series since Super, and am SUPER glad its finally back!
@False Theory chill out sippin that hater juice friend
@False Theory I prefer twitch with my 0 subs
I main samus in smash bros because I grew up playing Metroid games. I’m on the second play through on Dread on hard difficulty, the game is bad ass
My first Metroid game was Super Metroid and I've played almost all of them (exceptions, Prime Pinball and Fed Force). Metroid Dread was incredible! So happy to see my favorite franchise release a great game and receive great feedback.
This will be my first intro to the series. Very excited!
👍
It's a well loved series. I got my copy but I'm still thinking of metroid prime 4 as well.
Welcome to fandom for the most underrated series in gaming
Congratz you will enjoy this game but condolences as well since you've missed so much...I would say go back a play prime series and all the handheld titles but you may not feel like playing old games.
I was 8 years old when I got to play Metroid Prime, at the time I thought it was a horror game because of the first boss lol and I didn't have a save card so I had to either leave it on or replay it all over again. Fun memories ☺️
0:25 "And just so you know this footage is spoiler free"
Yeah, right.
First Metroid was Fusion/Prime. Got the double pack for christmas with the strategy guides. Beat Fusion first and loved it. Kept replaying for months after trying to beat it quicker and quicker. Prime was really awesome too.
My first Metroid game was Prime, ans I played the whole trilogy without playing any mainline 2-D titles. Dread was my first mainline and I freaking LOVE it
I hope this is a beginning of a new Metroid era of games
Definitely want to get this game. Haven’t played Metroid since NES. Ya that long lol. But the gameplay I watch was great but there are a ton of hidden paths that will mess up new players for sure. But I’m excited to try it
first Metroid game was Metroid...pretty sure i rented it. First Metroid game i purchased was Metroid 2 on Gameboy. First Metroid game that got me hooked was Super Metroid, which is right up there with Link to the Past as greatest game of all time.
I played Prime 3 on the Wii and loved it. Went out and got the whole Prime trilogy collection, really sunk my teeth into them. Later, I fell in love with Super Metroid, and really enjoyed Zero Mission and Fusion. I even played Other M just to get more Metroid. I'm so glad to see the series make a comeback, and I really hope it continues from here! Can't wait to see what happens with Prime 4.
Thanks for sharing!
First Metroid game was Super Metroid back in like 98, 23 years later and I am so damn happy that hopefully this franchise is about to make a huge comeback! Dread was honestly amazing! It made me want to replay all of the classic games again. I loved all of the stages and the sound and music for all of the stages, the boss fights were all challenging and took a lot of trial and error to figure them out. Over all 10/10 game
I just got my copy today and I’m loving it so far, those EMMI encounters are tense AF, holy crap 😊
Dude same that second Emmi you run into had my hands sweaty 🥵 lol.
@@jonathanperez612 yeah same here OMG
Man...been playing all day. The nostalgia is real. Such a great Metroid title. Dreams came true.
What is your favorite area? It can be in terms of atmosphere or just how much you liked what happened in that section.
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged I really enjoy all of them. Cataris reminds me of Norfair, Burenia reminds of Maridia...and so on.
What i enjoyed the most were the boss fights, they get gradually tougher. The first ones have simple patterns even between phases but the latter ones add new patterns each phase which caught me off guard several times.
This game is incredible. Nothing else to say.
I agree. I just got it today. The only real criticism I have is that the Arena Combat Boss Battles aren’t that fun.
@@Tortilla_Pizzeria_Pixels Seriously? You're the only and unique one that i've seen not liking boss fights. They're challenging enough to be extremely fun.
@@bensaadoussema9679 Sorry, I meant the Arena bosses like the dual Chozo robot soldiers. I like almost all of the other boss fights.
@@Tortilla_Pizzeria_Pixels I like the chozo fights themselves, there's just way too many of them. Probably my only legit criticism aside from maybe Emmi zones being pretty bland and needlessly sprawling.
I always wanted to get into Metroid, I'm glad they finally added a game to switch
Agreed, looks pretty good. I'm not sure if complaints are coming from the "it needs to look exactly like real life" camp or what, but it looks good.
I keep hearing that complaint and I'm super confused. I'm playing on a 65" LG OLED and it is straight up gorgeous
Awesome… I think I’m going to buy it. The demo was a good way to try it out and this convinced me to get it even more.. thx!
Metroid Zero Mission was my first one as a kid. Then played Fusion along with some of the Prime series. So glad to finally go back to the classic 2D side scrolling style. Dread has been amazing so far, especially the atmosphere!
First Metroid Game: Super Metroid, the year it released as I was just a wee child
First thoughts: Played for about 4 hours and wow, the difficulty spikes are indeed a BIG element I did not expect as I went in totally blind, not frustrating but challenging.
First Spanish game to win a GOTY.
This game deserves an “EMMI” award for it’s difficulty. 😆
Is it harder than Fusion?
@@kennyguevara6277 I didn’t play fusion yet. Sorry bro.
@@kennyguevara6277 I think I honestly died more times in Dread in my first playthrough than my first playthrough of Fusion. Dread is still a must buy for a switch for me and looking forward when Prime get here.
prime 1 and fusion were my first metroid games and been a fan since they came out.
Before Dread, I knew nothing about Metroid. But to prepare myself, I read some stuff from the wiki and got interested with Samus instantly. Then I watched the theme performed by The Game Awards orchestra, and I was sold. So I bought myself a copy, and just like everything stated in this video, this game is just great. It's so smooth and never at one point I noticed any glitch or something wrong with the animation. The final battle was so amazing and badass that I'm planning to get the next game. Solid 9/10 game for me.
I totally disagree about the tv. I have my switch hooked up to a 4k 65" Onn Roku TV, and it looks fantastic to me.
Good for you, doesn't change the facts though
Watching the Metroid Dread before you buy, while playing Metroid Dread...
Same actually. 😅
SAX was Way more terrifying
I just downloaded the demo game for the Nintendo Switch....OMG love it!! Brings back memories of a kid when I beat the OG Metroid. First game I beat by myself!
Literally i remember getting Metroid on release for the NES so i love how nostalgic this feels. gotta pick it up
