We recently featured both Gary's planes on the channel. A Lancair 360 and Lancair IVP. These are some of the fastest piston airplanes in the world. And Gary as a private pilot built the 360 and bought the 4 seater for longer trips.

External audio of this interview was corrupt. Hazard of the job! Hope you still enjoy the video.
over all the sound was good . enjoyed as usual
Just don’t let it happen again. 🤪
No problem.
you need to talk to a few sound techs and get that under control - I like you, I like your channel but wind noise to this extent is really bad. Takes your video down by 50%. Just constructive feedback. Be well and keep up the good work.
As owner of a Skystar Pulsar III, the Lancair 360 is aspirational for me. If I were willing to sacrifice some other costly interests to provision owning 2 planes, it would be these 2 Lancairs. Bravo Brother for a life well lived!
Listening to this guy talk, how well spoken and smart he is explains how he can afford such planes, it doesnt matter what he does the cream rises to the top and hes likeable and not fake big words smart. Great commentary
Ya bro, you should get down on your knees and give him what you want to give him.
@@CRYMEARIVER-S4 isn't that more your own wish? Sounds like it to me
I really like this video format where you edit out the questions and only present video and audio of the subject speaker.
Do you have any suggestions regarding obtaining flight proficiency in the IV-P? At only 110hrs (mostly Piper and Cessna) and working towards an IFR, what was your path to being a safe IV-P pilot? Did you purchase the IV-P and train exclusively with it, or do you carry a lot of low performance aircraft hours?
One of the best presentations so far .thanks Mike!
Man that is amazing. What a fortunate man.
Good for him.
Safe journeys.
✌🏻🇺🇸
comp sci represent. It's interesting that the 4P is relatively heavy. That just means it's possible to make a plane that's even significantly better than the already top of the crop plane.
At 539km/h cruise, it can basically keep up with a Cirrus Visionjet. So imagine even better. So much potential in affordable GA
Great video Mike. Tks for sharing with us. 👍
I like this format of video... more documentary style. Nice work Mike.
Great video for just letting the owner talk and editing out any interruptions.
3 beautiful ladies in your life, as you said you are a blessed man.
1996-2006 IV-P, $275,000-$300,000. Pressurized speed machine. Maximize the performance in the low to mid 20,000' altitudes, which means an anti/de-icing system, and an instrument rating. 1550-pound useful load. 90-gallons of fuel, so with full-fuel (90-gal X 6.5 lbs/gal = 585 lbs) drop that useful load to 965 lbs. That's still an impressive payload number.
Mike…one of the best so far.
Fly safe
Nice to see Spruce Creek again. I lived there in the mid 80s. There was a lot of home-building going on. I helped a couple of neighbours (Terry MacDonald and Bob Conn) build one of the first Lancair kits (# 15, I think). An O 225 would push it at 145 kn, no problem. The fellow in the interview is absolutely right “stall” speed was 50 mph but the sink rate below 85 was wicked. Approach speed critical for a good (survivable) landing.
Great interview. A lot of good information. Thanks👍👍
Thanks for introducing us to this brother. Seems like a very likeable guy. Gonna check out his channel.
The first time I saw. a Lancair was on a show called" ABCs WIDE WORLD OF FLYING" 1983 or 1984 WOW!!!...it looked like a small fighter..they even interviewed the builder...and flew in it!!!. I think I read somewhere where he had an accident later.. He was a cool guy!!! I had it on vhs:)...🐦
Great interview... super cool owner! Hopefully you'll do a follow up soon and have flight reviews of his gorgeous Lancairs!
Great piece. Thank you both
Great advice. I like how you stay fast in the pattern while others want get close to falling out of the sky.
Excellent vid. Thanks Mike.
When I was getting my license in the 1970's, I flew in and out of some busy airports. It seemed more normal than not that I would hear something like "9433 Uniform keep your speed up on final, sir", or "Cleared without delay".
One time, I lost electrical (actually, more than once), and had to do a flapless final. Considering my history, the landing seemed a little busy, but not much different than any other day.
My instructor always used to say "Speed and altitude, they're like money in the bank."
Guess that's why I keep things a little hot, and/or high.
One of your most entertaining presentations...thanks
Thanks Gary, Yeah, most practical small operators in the first place before a Lancair really should have made themselves accustomed to at least 90kt approaches for overall safety.
Estoy interesado en adquirir informacion de este fasinante avion LANCAIR 360 EN ESPAÑOL
PLEASE SEND ME THEASE INFORMATION IN SPANIS
Thanks for sharing this, Mojo.
RDD Lancair LX7, has a better wing and slotted flaps, cures all that hot approach speed problems. Either way insurance on this plane is 15,000$ a year, even with that you can’t even get insurance on the Lancair IV-P “from anybody” unless you got a “thousand hours” minimum.
Don't worry about insurance, it's a waste of money anyway!
@@srnunan4783 crashed a plane and bought insurance the next day, don't be like me guys lmao
@@abel4776 yes, If the amount you have covered is enough for the total cost of the plane.
Beautiful planes 👌🏾
What size are the wheels? Can you operate on grass? 2500 ft @600’ asl
That 4P is for sure a plane that can get "ahead" of you, unless you got the chops to keep on it.
I think if I was in your shoes, I would sell both of your planes and get a DA62. But, that's me.
Got the cool toys and the hot blonde. Living the American dream!
Is it normal for the landing gear to tuck in at different rates?
You know this guys on his 2nd or 3rd marriage
I like this guy, a hard worker who earned his toys and benefits !! But, less than 80 mph and the plane doesn't want to fly ??...yikes !! Nice interview !!
I think he meant 80 knots
@@GhostZodick still, not being an experienced pilot, it sounds like speed is the only thing keeping that plane airborne..good interview....😊
@@GhostZodick He really said it.
Nice video
Yikes indeed. I always heard they are easy get in trouble with now I know why.
Wow...listening to this explains that McKinney TX crash to the tee.
Gary seems like a very cool dude! What a great story, work hard and enjoy the rewards. Thanks Mike, for bring us beautiful sexy airplane and awesome people like Gary.
Spruce Creek! I live there!! Love your stuff. Please keep producing it
Great guy.
Nice planes!
AOA is invaluable on these birds
Addendum: How does one find insurance for Lancair IVs. I just talk with an aircraft insurance co, and they tell me they avoid anything that contains the name "Lancair".
Sweet craft
Great 👍 Video 🤩🇺🇸🚁🎥
I found my new hero.
Anyways... With now the experience of building the avionics panel is there a way to get the reliability of the wiring connections.
+ keep them in colour coded harnesses?
+ stop corrosion of plugs?
+ antivibration of Garmin instruments.
A lot still like a six-pack. I keep telling myself Aviate, Navigate and communicate! Don't confuse with multiple visual screens.
👀🧭
GFC 500, cool.
Do you ever worry about the high stall speed for an emergency landing? I love the plane, I'm just intimidated owning one in Oregon where there are not many options in a forced landing.
have a nice day. 0 km for 4 people. Can I buy the ultralight plane for $300,000? thanks.
Someday.
Dam you Diego!!!! 😂
Yes..all well and good re hard work, hobby, flying etc. and I mean this in the most respectful way; the beautiful mind attached to the beautiful legs next to you is a nice addition to. the lifestyle.
(I was concerned that all th plane jockeys watching might have been too caught up in the information to notice. But not me.)
Wow I really want to learn to fly but I’m 54 years old and not much money from VA disability.
I hear you. Similarly situated here. Oh well, it is what it is. I find it helpful to focus upon what I can do and what is within my reach. This can be a surprising exercise.
Perhaps this isn’t entirely out of your reach with some creative thinking. Unless I’m missing something your age shouldn’t be an issue.
Look at 103 ultralight..no license required and can be bought used for around $3000
I didn’t get my PPL until I was 60, never too late!!

You don't need to cuss... It show and proves a low iq. Im an iq specialist
Low gear speeds are a hassle.
Wow! those landing ans stall speeds would be scary
Must be nice.
God I wish "hard work" is all it took these days :-/, now I have to be 80k in debt to even get an interview at a job in a computer science field which pays 15$ an hour, 60 hours a week is pretty bog standard now-a-days.
When in Rome, do as the Romans. You are mixing with C-150s and other slower planes. Dump the flaps before you enter the pattern. Why give yourself less time to react?
I don’t even own a plane, got to rent.....🙈🙈
the main thing is you fly :-)
That's where we all started man. Nothing wrong with that
What do you fly now? I’m just getting started. Studying for written exam first
Just don't ever get slow in one.
No wonder they are a death trap. Those speeds for a small plane are insance around a pattern.
IDK who's hotter, her or the plane! :)
The plane. 😂
It probably helped that your father was an aircraft mechanic, & present, as well???😏
10 deaths per 100,000 hrs . . .
I don't wish to be rude, but I have to say I don't think much of your piloting skills. About twenty years ago I did a half-hour demo flight in the Lancair IVP factory demonstrator, which went around to various airshows to promote this plane when the design was new. I did stalls, both level and in turns in both the clean and dirty configuratons and found all to be relatively benign and easily manageable. When was the last time you went up with a check pilot and stalled the airplane in all configurations for practise?
I think you are approaching WAY TOO FAST! The Lancair IVP I flew stalled at 62 knots in the landing configuration (gear down, full flaps, cowl flaps open, prop full fine). While the IVP is definitely a "trim airplane" that has to be retrimmed in pitch and yaw with each configuration change, rI found it elatively easy to fly final approaches at 1.3 to 1.4 Vso with power on, or 81-87 knots in smooth air. You also should be able to configure the airpane to fly straight and level or shallow turns of about 15 degrees back in slow flight, in that same speed range. If not, take some lessons.
Do you drive a dodge?
Sounds like an arrogant comment. You don't own it. You don't fly it. You can't comment on his flying.
@@calebmiller6611 I thnk you meant to write '"seems" like an arrogant comment, since you can't hear what I wrote!
Apparently you didn't read the entire post. I'm not arrogant at all ... okay ... maybe a little. But my comments aren't based in arrogance. Rather, they're the result of my experience flying the same type of aircraft.
This pilot seems a bit scared of the airplane's low-speed end, which is one explanation for the higher than desired approach speeds up around 100 knots. High wind speed/gusts are another. That's part of why I suggested he fly all kinds of stalls (power on/off, landing gear up/down, flaps deployed/retracted, wings level/in turns or accelerated stalls.) And learn to recover from unusual attitudes.
Oh, by the way, are you a licensed pilot like me? Have you ever flown a lancair IV, like me? Or complex single- and twin-engine aircraft, like me? Or any other airplane? Note: RC models and paper airplanes don't count. Nor does chair time in your man cave "flying" MS Flight Simulator.
If the answer is no to one or all questions, then who really cares what you think, Caleb?
@@douglasmcintyre3297 I am actually. Turbine time with over a thousand hours of TT. Not just little piston airplanes.
@@douglasmcintyre3297 you just proved my point on your level of arrogance
