@@markg4459 That is a good question. When built, it had an O-360. After my uncle sold it, I know the new owner did a number of modifications. I don't know what exactly was done to it, nor can I say for sure that it hit 270 since I have no data and did not witness it. It is all second hand.

Forged internals, high compression pistons, custom fuel tuning, custom cowling should get it to higher top speed.

Turbo, glass cockpit, onboard 02, adjustable prop. I wonder what it would do up high. The biggest issue I think are structural improvements.

Well Jimmy, this plane for sure needs some love. If this is your favorite plane? Your baby? Ok then bring it up to a champion. Glass Cockpit, nice interior, and an awesome outside color scheme? This plane could be way better, right? Maybe a constant speed prop? If this would be my airplane I would go for it, because it’s worth it. Just an idea. Plain white, old school clocks, a bit underrated for this sportswear? Take care, always safe flying. And don’t forget to safe the 310!!!

Hey Jimmy, long term subscriber and love your channel. The Lancair one of my favourite aircraft is worth keeping and upgrading for sure. Can I suggest that you at least put a constant speed prop and unit on it. If you can turbo or supercharge it, you might end up with a space shuttle or close to it. This one’s a keeper Jimmy. Lots of fans here in Australia mate. Keep up the good work buddy! Paul from the Gold Coast Queensland Australia.

Jimmy I love the Glass Air but I built a Veri eze not the Long but the original Veri eze designed to dominate the endurance/ efficiency races in the 80’s. Which it did. 100hp fixed hand carved wood prop, no starter. Plane was actually built to the pilots shoulder width and weight (canard size). We typically ran 180 knots at 75% between 5000-7000 ft at 4gph😳. We never pushed hard but some of the guys pushed into the 190-200 running flat with juiced up hampsters. Rutan told us the only limitation was how fast the 100hp could spin. Then some crazy guys tossed jet engines on a few.
The Lance Air was my dream rig given you had more room to carry more than a spare pair of boxers and could put bigger power up front😆. Sweet planes!!
If you ever find a high rated build Veri eze not a Long, an actual Veri eze go fly it. If you like the Lance Air the eze will absolutely knock your socks off.

Constant speed 3 blade carbon prop (Whirlwind). I pull the RPM back to 2450 for more economic fuel burn, full MP in the 10,500 to 12,500 altitude range where I mostly cruise, I burn 8.5 gph ROP and 7.9 LOP. At these settings my TAS is ~185 Kts. ( ~ 215 mph true) at 2650 RPM I do about 200 kts (230 MPH) about 9.5 GPH. Fully areobatic too with both inverted fuel (flop tube on header tank) and oil system (Christen). @@twistedyogert Just yeet in a Junkers Jumo 213E-1, it can produce more than 2000 horsepower at 10000 meters altitude, and it only weighs 940 kgs....the only problem is....I don't think there's any of those engines around anymore. The other thing is that the engine is almost as large as the aircraft itself.

First Flight I remember taking was in 1976, then had the privilege of having a flight in a Cessna 150(I think) then my dad got me a flight in a C130 Herc and we did a few Tachcan landing and I was in the cockpit jump seat, one second looking at sky then ground and then sky again wow, then had a few flights in VC10’s and L1011’s and a few in Airbus A320’s, oh and a few in helicopters(none as pilots tho, I’d love to hold a pilots licence, just can’t afford it)

I am a regular attendee at the Reno Air races. The faster you push the airframe, the more chance you have for flutter and structural failure. I saw an Osprey and a Mustang both crash due to structural failure. 😟😱😵

I lost my 2 best flying buddies in an airplane crash in Grand Prarie TX Nov 21 2020 when they lost an engine on take off in their Wheeler Experimental. It too was a fast composite plane like your Lancair. They are fast in the sky but are terrible aircraft to fly slow. Last I checked the NTSB has not come out with a ruling. But I suspect it was a fuel transfer valve issue! Sometimes slow is good too. That's why I'm switching to rotorcraft. (Xenon 4) They can land in a back yard, very simular to a heliicopter if need be, but still keep up a good enough ground speed pace and flies like an airplane, only smoother on windy days.
Love the Video content and really enjoy seeing you involve your kids in your Hobby/ Buisness??????

    • @naughtiusmaximus830
      @naughtiusmaximus830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Rollover accidents seem to be the danger with those. The stability of the gyro is really appealing tho. I live in a windy area with lots of gorges.

@@stevegiboney4493 I do Steve. HAve you ever flown one? I have!

    • @CurtisDrew1

@@naughtiusmaximus830 Yes, that can and will roll over. But fixed wing can lose lift too. Too much climb, to tight a turn not enough runway..... Flying is never completely safe. But I like the Rotorcraft because they are much more stable in bumpy weather (where I fly the most) and can land in the space of a clear yard. As long as the Jesus bolt doesn't break or a rotor blade gets bent or a Pilot doesn't do something stupid, they are, in my opinion, more safe.
Just think, they have this large spinning gyro stabilizer above them. HA!
Engine off landing are a lot safer in tight areas. They take off like an airplane with a rollout, and can almost land vertically. I've actually been able to fly backways in one! And that was on my first training flight. And it was on purpose too.....
And they are loads of fun! You should try one!
I see videos all the time where a fixed wing has flipped upside down on it's nose, simply because the ground was rough at landing, or the pilot hit the brakes too hard ect...
I'm wanting one that is larger inside than a Cessna 182 and has a 900 lb load capacity, with 2 side by side seats inside with doors and everything. Very cross country capable.
Side note. My friend and I once flipped a Quicksilver MX uppside down while just walking (holding the wings, engine off) the thing around to face it into the wind. Which had changed direction on us after we got it out of the hanger. Dang thing flipped over like a kite! My buddy got hurt because he didn't let it go fast enough and he landed on his back like a pole vaulted on the grass. Totaled the aircraft.
