Love watching this interview with Howard so wonderfully expressive of his Soupy appreciation tales. Our family grew up with Soupy in Detroit in the early 50's where he had TWO shows on every day of the work week---Lunch with Soupy (later Breakfast with Soupy) and SOUPY'S ON at 11 PM, which was kind of a "Tonight Show" version of Soupy in which he had singing guests and did super-silly skits with the same style humor/nonsense as his daytime show for kids (or supposed kids: EVERYBODY watched his shows!). It was a real treat to be able to watch him 10 shows a week for years, an then watch him grow in popularity and fame as he eventually went national in New York and Los Angeles. Soupy would even show up at things like charity softball games (where we filmed 8mm home movies of him) and store openings. Great fun silly good times.
I was in junior high as well when I watched Soupy. My brother, 10 years older than I, introduced me to the wonders of Soupy. Two states away, my husband to be, was also a Soupy Sales fan! And Pookie! ❤️
I spotted soupy on a small beach towel on the beach below Pacific Palisades. I was about 10 and he treated me so nicely. Nobody even bothered him, those were the days.
This is great .... The Soupman.... I've seen the Soupy/Sinatra pie in the face clips around and I'm reasonably sure you can search it here on TH-cam. I'm going there now!
The Frank Sinatra clip -- which was shot at Metromedia in New York, not L.A. -- does indeed exist. And the reason Soupy was in L.A. in 1966 was he had come out to make his ill-fated "Birds Do It" movie for Columbia
Soupy broadcast his show from LA in the early 1960s. According to his autobiography, Sinatra was such a fan that he originally appeared on that incarnation and insisted on getting a pie in the face. So this means Frank got a pie thrown at him on both the West and East Coasts!
So during this time frame Soupy was on WNEW in NYC Channel 5. That's how I got to first know of him. Surprised Howard did not know this as this was the height of his poularity and he had at least one record on the ABC/Paramount label.
Its pot, not heroin. We are finding out daily now about our favorite stars whom we thought were so straight laced were doing the same thing. Elvis and Marilyn were doing much worse weren't they? Its the talent and how good they make us feel that matters.
Howard is a Gold man.... Do your stretching on the floor of your living room... your joints will be decompressed ... we want you to live for another 100 years.... I play Eleonore song here in Arica Chile
2024 and still there are studios hunting for missing TV shows with armies of lawsuits as well as private collectors who would be willing to negotiate a settlement if they were granted amnesty to release these tapes for public consumption. Most of these deceased performers deserve to be exposed to a younger generation of classic TV and radio fans. 😎
The Marijuana world of NYC in the 1960's was one no one knows. Weed from Africa, Panama, stuff so potent, it was just labeled "Wacky Weed", hashish from the 3rd World, etc....it wasn't a mild green high...it would knock you out and put you to bed.
Eating poorly, driving carelessly, not exercising, getting stressed by getting financially over ones head, gambling, drinking, smoking....etc etc are worse than some drugs (notably pot), and people do many of those things all the time, and far more commonly than weed. Soupy lived a long happy productive life that brought much happiness to millions of people. I don't see a problem here. Just my view.

That's a great story, Howard. You created more fans for Soupy by telling this story.

I remember seeing Soupy Sales at a water park near Indianapolis when I was a kid in 1960 or 1961. He looked irritated to me.

Frank Nastasi was funnier. He gave Pookie his voice.
