Soupy Sales was the coolest guy on TV. I used to watch his show back in the early 1960's. Soupy was a big jazz fan and his show was a great venue for featuring musical talent. Apparently he liked the blues, too.
Actually 1957 was during his ABC run (on the west coast) which i vaguely remember. My best memories was during the mid-late 60's on WNEW-TV 5 in New York. In the seventies he re-appeared on a syndicated version of his show (based on the west coast, I think).
Soupy was great! When he did this shows he was reunited with Clyde Adler whom he started out with in the 50’s. Clyde was the “nut at the door” as well as Pookie,hippie,white fang and black tooth. Frank Nastasi took over those characters into the 60’s and is credited with creating Pookies character and voice. They were both great.
i grew up with the soup man,always ran home after school in the 60s just to c soupy[on black and white tv],was soooo sad to hear of his death love him to this day,rest in peace pie man miss u and god bless u for my sense of humor

Jennifer Reeves yes, the guys set Soupy up when they had a stripper knock on the door...Soup didn't know that only he could see her. The people at home saw something else.
@@kevinbutler5026 Sorry. The stripper episode wasn't from the ABC Detroit "Lunch with Soupy" show. The stripper show was from the Metromedia New York show. I saw it first run. Soupy's response was epic. BTW, the unedited clip was on TH-cam somewhere. 🤣
While he may have been a nice guy and had good taste in music, I cannot for the life of me find his style or the content of his comedy suited for anyone older than 5.
soupy had a real jew comb over...most jews have lousy hair...except dustin hoffman had a nice head of hair like a non jew...thats a big reason why he made it...if he had hair like your average jew...paul simon, art garfunkle....hoffman never would have been a movie star. i met soupy in 2001 at an autograph show...he was really out of it...he had had a stroke and was a mess...and no one wanted to pay him for his autograph..he sat at a table with a minder..some awful looking woman...i approached him...he didnt know where or who he was...it was sad. RIP

Did he just refer to B.B. King as a jazz guitarist? Boy, that was cringe-worthy. I never understood what people saw in him anyway. He dressed like a Gilligan rip-off, and his brand of "comedy" wasn't particularly funny. There was little structure to the show and the jokes didn't have that razor-sharp wit that made other comedy shows of the time side-splitting funny. It's like he just let the cameras roll and acted like a complete goofball. How he made it as far as he did in the entertainment business is a total anomaly to me.

There were no other TV shows that had structure - they were live and that Soupy had to write, act and pay for all the props makes me wonder who you think was any better. Same with me. I heard music that my conservative MidWestern parents would never play. He really opened my eyes and ears.
God, I loved this guy as a kid. He was innovative on live TV. Sinatra wanted a pie in the face! And that started a constant flow of celebrity guests.
I loved watching the show as a kid . Soupy and the gang always cracked me up totally zanny fun . Priceless memories.

Ok. I looked at this to watch B.B. play the guitar and it was a prop!! HE DOESN’T ACTUALLY PLAY A SINGLE NOTE ON THE GUITAR.
