I always loved watching The Soupy Sales Show reruns. He seemed like someone who never yelled at anybody or bad mouthed their skills. He was just a fun loving guy, and his show won the hearts of millions.
For 30 years my sister and I have sung the “Soupy Sales” birthday song to each other on each other’s birthday! Looking for a video clip of his birthday song has led me back to love, love, loving Soupy all over again! What a joy of Life!
I worked for Soupy for a short time in the late 80s. One thing you’re always told. “Don’t meet your childhood idols. Because, they will disappoint you” Well Soupy never read that memo. I think White Fang probably ate it. He was a great teacher. And one of the nicest human beings ever. That’s why his show worked so well. You can’t fake kids. They will see through you. One aggravating thing working for Soupy. It would take about an hour and a half to get out of the building or to walk down the street with him. He would make time for everyone who said hello to him in Manhattan.
The story of Soupy asking kids to send him money (green paper with pictures of presidents on it from their parent's wallets) was one of the funniest things I ever heard. Apparently, when the station suspended him there was a near riot the next day outside the station demanding that Soupy be brought back LOL
Soupy is the KING. I had lunch with Soupy. My mom would make that a event. I loved it. Gosh how I miss his show. It is so 🆒 to see that on TV sometimes. 👌✌️
Soupy had a following of kids who he let into the studio at Channel 5 WNEW everyday at his live performance. He spent time with everyone outside before the show. Later in my life I saw him several times at comedy clubs and he always talked to me. He was a kind and generous soul!! 🥰💕
I was one of those kids Soupy would allow to sit in the studio while a live production. He was the most wonderful, talented man on this planet. As well as his staff. Such creative, good people! Especially Frank Nastasi (who played White Fang, Black Tooth and all the other characters) and Donna Duckwall, Soupy's personal secretary (who always arranged our visits to the set) Me and my mother. I was 16 years old!!!
Those nightclub shows had pretty much an adult theme. Is nightclub act was hilarious. And it was nice that he used Paul DeVere on the piano. A lot of people don't know but devere actually promised his high school graduating class that he would get soupy sales to host their prom. Devere then went to ABC studios where soupy was filming the $20,000 pyramid. He caught soupy between takes and asked him to do it. Soupy said yes. And then said let's go into the studio and record a promo for it so you can take it back to the school and play it over the intercom system. He had spoken to devere and found out that his father had passed away when he was very young. So he took a liking to Paul DeVere And told devere to give him his phone number. And if he ever needed a piano player he would call him. About a year and a half later devere gets a call. And it's soupy He was doing a show of in upstate New York. And he needed a piano player. And DeVere was the guy that he called.
I was a kid when his show was around and loved it. He made me laugh so much I just had to watch his show everyday after school. So funny this guy was and a legend. Love this guy and miss his shows.
So great to see Soupy reminiscing. I still remember seeing the little green pieces of paper show. It's so sad that so many of his New York shows were junked by the station, those were hilarious off the wall entertainment.

Hard to put your finger on why exactly it worked so well - but it had a combination of Soupy's likeability and something surreal and a little conspiratorial for kids; in a strange low-budget way it was a bit like early Letterman, in that, even as a kid, you felt you were in on the joke.
What about the mailing in of dollar bills he told the kids to send him? I was in shock about that too. I believed the FCC came down on him for that. 😅 😂

I can't think of another entertainer who was so beloved by his admirers/fans.
He was on the syndicated What's my Line from 1968-1975 as the regular panelist with Arlene Francis. who was the other regular panelist.
