The 04 version is closer to his original version who was a thief with ice powers but he was originally called Mr. Zero. He was renamed Freeze on the Adam West series. The version that was reimagined for the animated series is actually closer to a different ice theme villain named Cryonic Man. Who’s motive was to save his sick wife.

I always just worked under the assumption that the people working on The Batman were told to differentiate the show from what came before. I think Ultimate Spiderman had the same thing going on, but it's still really weird to me how it went about Freeze. Especially because Nora DOES exist in this show, we see a picture of the two of them in his origin flashback but like... he either steals jewels and/or freezes Gotham over. Makes it even weirder to me that he was the antagonist in that flash-forward episode
Honestly I was really disappointed in this version of Freeze, I don’t get why they didn’t give him any depth, which is bad considering they did that well with Riddler, and this version not only had potential in making Freeze deeper with him specifically prioritizing diamonds, or with him going missing for a while before emerging as Mr. Freeze, which is sad considering I like some of their other unique portrayals like Croc, but Freeze felt to basic in his approach that it felt like they were missing something.

This is like when I see Bane doing petty crime in Batman stuff and I remember that a 60 20mg tablet bottle of muscle enhancing steroids can cost up to 85 dollars and Bain has Venom pressurized in liquid form in canisters the size of oxygen tanks pumping into his body. Just to fill his tanks completely with regular steroids would cost up ward of 28.5 million dollars and with Venom, whatever he’s doing better be worth the cash because otherwise that is an extreme deficit. Also that’s just one tank he has two at a given time pretty often so double that to 57 million per criminal outing
Maybe if they wanted to make Freeze more evil then it could start with him commiting crimes to save her but overtime he just started to like being brutal and used his wife as an excuse to commit evil actions. Maybe even at some point he would find a way to cure his wife and he did it but be became so evil he couldn't stop being a bad guy
Honestly, I don’t mind that they made him just a thief in this version, as you could argue with reminiscent of his original appearances as “Mr Zero” Although I feel like if you’re going to adapt the more criminal version of Mr. freeze, you might as well go the full mile and give him his classic name. I mean “Mr zero” Stillwood kind of work for a villain using subzero temperatures to his advantage Obviously, we all prefer the tragic origin for Mr. freeze established in Batman, the animated series, but from what I heard, they specifically chose not to do that as they felt that had already been done just-ICE.
While I prefer a more 3-dimensional freeze, he does have my favorite design and voice for the character, and I was also very upset he didn’t appear in more episodes while penguin had like 10.

Not every Villain needs to be sympathetic, that kind of ruins the point if every single villain is just a poor, tortured soul. And Batman and Gotham has it's fair share of tragic figures, but also those that are just monsters. I actually like The Batman's departure BECAUSE it's so far removed from the Sympathetic Freeze, instead we get on that's just a 180 into being a pure psychopath and not a carbon copy of the 90's Batman with a stylish redesign If he had followed the same story beats, I feel like he would be far worse than either the 90's Freeze he tried to copy, or the new take. The Batman's Freeze isn't bad, just different, and the show does different well, giving one of my favorite versions of Clayface.

I love this show, but I’ll admit I always had a problem with the majority of the villains being too two-dimensional. Mr. Freeze is just a jewel thief, Killer Croc isn’t an outcast, Bane is just a brute, and Catwoman has no ongoing relationship with Batman (she flirts, but it’s never serious). There are some exceptions: The Ventriloquist, The Riddler, and most notably, Clayface. Overall however, the villains are pretty lacking in terms of character depth.

I love this show, but I’ll admit I always had a problem with the majority of the villains being too two-dimensional. Mr. Freeze is just a jewel thief, Killer Croc isn’t an outcast, Bane is just a brute, and Catwoman has no ongoing relationship with Batman (she flirts, but it’s never serious). There are some exceptions: The Ventriloquist, The Riddler, and most notably, Clayface. Overall however, the villains are pretty lacking in terms of character depth.
