I was actually afraid to watch this video because I knew at the end that there would be at least one snare drum I would want (Gretsch Solid Steel and Dunnett Cast Bronze). I buy one more snare drum this year and my wife will have me singing soprano. Nice snare selection choices guys.
The george way line that Ronn is putting out is absolutely the best bang for buck you’ll get. I’ve got a 14x6.5 in million dollar blue and it beats out most of my other fancier snares. Wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. Great list fellas!
My deepest respect to the dcp for embarking on this month long, entertaining TH-cam mini series to find for us the best Snare drum out there. Truly a ton of effort for something that ironically will be outdated in a year or two 😂
The DW, Gretsch Steel, and George Way project the fattest note to the room mics, which I like a lot. The REAL surprise, and one of my favorites, was the Canopus. The reality is, they are ALL good, including the "SleeperLite". 😁
For my top 3 of this lot, I choose 1. Gretsch 2. Noble & Cooley 3. Keplinger Great video once again DCP! Y’all never disappoint. My rating is based off of sonic qualities alone. DCP sets the standard for quality video editing and creative content. I love what y’all are doing. This is another home run.
The Black Iron,....man, that drum always makes me smile. So good. I liked the Ludwig's, love the Gretsch and Yamaha also sounds damn good. Yes,...of course the George Way sounds amazing.
Amazing Showcase of musicianship. I mean especially Sepultura Territory :) The snares were good too, especially Sonor, Tama cast Bronze, George way and Dunnett Kast Bronze.
Thanks again for another great video. Lots of good options. To my ear, the Canopus 4" deep bronze snare was the best of the bunch. I admittedly may be in the minority, but I personally think deep snares are a bit overdone.
I have a Yamaha Recording Custom from the 1970’s(?) that I picked up from a garage sale for $15 ten years ago, and it’s still the best sounding snare drum that I have ever owned or played. The Gretsch solid steel approximates its tone and sound.
When I watched this back I still remember the feeling of when that happened. I surprised myself and was also annoyed when I couldn’t repeat it and do it properly… 😂
PLEASE do a video on that vintage Black Premier that's always sitting on the bottom rack to the right behind the kit. My dad was a Premier guy (2000s and Resonators from the 60s/70s) and I'm dying to hear it. I'M BEGGING.
Only one piccolo snare? Well, the Canopus Pancake was instantly the winner for me :) I just prefer the pop of the piccolos. The Sonor looks amazing though. I wonder what that would sound like with high tuning. Great video as always guys!
It took me getting older to realise this, you don’t need expensive gear. I’ve heard plenty of big hits with janky ol’ snare drum sounds you can replicate on a cheap steel snare drum. You just have to know how to tune them and you need decent heads. Having said that, I’m loving the fat sound of that Noble and Cooley Cherry shell 😍
I love the Yamaha winner in the Best Yamaha from 8 years ago" category. That sort of sums it up for me. So many great drums. Can anyone really pick a winner? Like who is the best drummer?? You guys are great.
As a sound guy I have to thank you for your recordings and the quality of them but also point out on how the Sonor kick sounds different between the dw snare and the last one, the George Way. It sounds like two different days, or two different mics, mic positioning, EQ, compression or a forgotten plug or side compression. Make a quick comparaison, you'll be surprised. After the Ludwig kit, the return of the Sonor stinks, but what a kick, excellent choice to make every snare shine !
All of these recordings are from different sessions (you can tell by my shirts). While the bass drum and floor Tom are the same, they were set up from scratch each time, hence why they sound different. Thanks for the kind words though.
@@tinterlande Your honesty adds to the love and respect that I have for you guys. You do an excellent job and having your "caverne d'Ali Baba" close to my home would be amazing but for my bank account. A piece of advice though, why don't you choose a configuration, let say a floor tom and bass drum and keep it as a reference for a full year, and the same for the mics and the electronic chain. That would allow for a fair comparaison among the cymbals et the snares. The Sonor kit would be a perfect start, that bass drum is a dream, specially "mixed" like you do with the dw snare. Sexy and punchy as hell. We need to be able to compare to choose. Once again, thanks for your passion and dedication.
One again, Ludwig showing why their supraphonic is the most recorded snare drum in history. Whether it's a brass or aluminum chrome plated shell, the supraphonic wins hands down. Good enough for Mr. Steve Gadd throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and even the 90s, it's good enough for anyone who calls themself a drummer.. Outside of the Ludwig, Noble & Cooley and Tama bell brass are absolutely phenomenal..
Daaaaang that Keplinger sounds so good! Pretty sure Alex from Saosin used something VERY similar to that on their self-titled album, if it wasn't a Kep.
DCP doesn't have better drums than anyone else. They just know how to record drums the way I like them. (this is me talking myself out of buying all their drums)
George Way was awesome. Bell brass Tama love but not going to happen. Surprise loved the 50 anniversary Tama. Couple others loved but not in my price range. Really all were beautiful snares ❤
The Sonor and Dunnett cast bronze drums would have sounded better if tuned higher IMO. The Tama anniversary cast bronze sounded better, but it seemed to be tuned higher. Lots of good drums here, but I presume “best of the year” has as much to do with clearing out select inventory than showcasing the best drums of the year. The DW, Noble$Cooley, and Keplinger were standouts, and I was surprised that the Way drum sounded so good. That little Canopus had some presence for a 4” deep drum.
Hmm for Sonor they are the Beech masters but I prefer the cut/bite/attack/ bark/woof of a sonor Birch snare even with my vintage teardrop beech Sonor kit.
Question. If you want to add an extra tom to your drum set but they don't make one in the size you need, can you buy a size that you already have and just tune it differently?
I would put the 13 inch Omar Hakim African Mahogany snare up against all of those.. That’s one snare in my opinion that doesn’t ever get enough recognition….
Drum Center of Portsmouth is the definition of top shelf!! Love y’all!!
Fact
❤️ 👊
this channel deserves more than 100k subscribers
As a proud George Way owner, I wholeheartedly endorse #1!!! Incredible snares
I was actually afraid to watch this video because I knew at the end that there would be at least one snare drum I would want (Gretsch Solid Steel and Dunnett Cast Bronze). I buy one more snare drum this year and my wife will have me singing soprano. Nice snare selection choices guys.
Give the wife some free snare drum lessons perhaps😂 nah thats a terrible idea isnt it!
That Sonor Kick is absolutely amazing

Love the vocal drum covers of your intro between vids. lol.
Someone noticed 😂
Love the MIDI bumper tracks!
Really love the George Way Aristocrat Studio!! Absolutely perfect sounding snare!!
Killer sound on all your vids. Best on TH-cam. Chrome Brass Ludwig for me.
Thanks so much, it means a lot!
This drum shop is on my bucket list for shore❤
Get here!
No Pearl this year, loved the 8 bit Grand Conjuration from Opeth, you guys are amazing
@@carlosleiva2825 I was looking for this comment!
black iron did it for me. You guys rock! Happy holidays!
Agree, beautiful sound

Job security 🤷🏼♂️
That George Way at room was sensational. Love my Supraphonic though!
you really tune drums very well
Thank you!
Surprised at how many steel snares were included..
Canopus BRONZE for mine.👍🏿
Steel snares rule!
steel suffers from unfair bad reputation since it is used for cheap snares.
@Eurodrummer666 That was my early impression of steel snares but now they're my favorite.
@Assimilator702 I had the same dislike in the past, now I like my steel Ian Paice and my brass mapex Nomad equally.
@Eurodrummer666 If you get a chance try toi find an early 80's Tama Superstar with the long high tension lugs. Thats my favorite steel snare.
Thanks for another great year showcasing high-quality drums. Please consider some Aussie made, Aussie hardwood drums for next year!
The DW, Gretsch Steel, and George Way project the fattest note to the room mics, which I like a lot. The REAL surprise, and one of my favorites, was the Canopus. The reality is, they are ALL good, including the "SleeperLite". 😁
The dunnet kast and gretsch solid ❤ they speaks to me... always amazing job guys.
For my top 3 of this lot, I choose
1. Gretsch
2. Noble & Cooley
3. Keplinger
Great video once again DCP! Y’all never disappoint. My rating is based off of sonic qualities alone.

Thanks for the kind words!
Best drum channel hands down
I really like the Gretsch visually, but the George Way sounds perfect!
My fave was number 10. 👌
The special edition 5x14 Ludwig is wonderful.
The Black Iron,....man, that drum always makes me smile. So good. I liked the Ludwig's, love the Gretsch and Yamaha also sounds damn good. Yes,...of course the George Way sounds amazing.
To my old ears, really loved the Sonor Artist Bronze. I need one.
Noble and Cooley is my dream drum. I find them very unique, and the manufacturing process, but the history of the company is really cool too.
For me,
1- george WayStudio
2-Dunnett K cast
3-Sonor Artist
4- Gretsch solid steel
5- BDC Nicko
Thanks again for that great video.
And there it is!✌🏼
I Need That George Way!!!!
Ween's 'Banana's & Blow' at 13:00? Nice.
Amazing Showcase of musicianship. I mean especially Sepultura Territory :) The snares were good too, especially Sonor, Tama cast Bronze, George way and Dunnett Kast Bronze.
Loved number 8 ❤
Love the 8 bit Opeth Ghost of Perdition segue to #1
Maaaaaan, that Dunnett. 🤤
The Grand Conjuring… I love it!
Cave In "Juggernaut" as segueway music? Bravo, fellas. Bravo.
Right. That perked my ears right away!
You are a gentleman and a scholar, sir.
Thanks again for another great video. Lots of good options. To my ear, the Canopus 4" deep bronze snare was the best of the bunch. I admittedly may be in the minority, but I personally think deep snares are a bit overdone.
@@harwoodcarnal8523 canopus has the best sound for me also!
Nicko’s Icarus. 👌

4:21 Tony says to himself, "Hey! My foot can do that? Not bad!"
When I watched this back I still remember the feeling of when that happened. I surprised myself and was also annoyed when I couldn’t repeat it and do it properly… 😂
Also an honorable mention for me....13 x 7 Sonor SQ2 heavy maple....with gold hardware in Scandinavian Birch
I have really enjoyed the Drumbles, you guys make any snare sound good! Hope to visit #DrumCenterofPortsmouth this year.
PLEASE do a video on that vintage Black Premier that's always sitting on the bottom rack to the right behind the kit.
My dad was a Premier guy (2000s and Resonators from the 60s/70s) and I'm dying to hear it.
I'M BEGGING.
All of them are pretty cool, but those 2 Tamas with Ludwig? They're the icing on the cake.
Best New Yamaha from 8 years go 😂 Love the "Supraluxe" and the Gretsch Solid Steel. That George Way snare does sound glorious!
The best is my Milestone 14x6.5!😻
What’s this Music playlist??? Somenthing so cool!
Don't think the scatting at 2:16 goes unappreciated!
A passion project
George way for me nice sound
Putting a supralite next to a bell brass, dcp is too funny😂
Black Iron for me. If wanted a new snare I would buy one.
Only one piccolo snare? Well, the Canopus Pancake was instantly the winner for me :) I just prefer the pop of the piccolos. The Sonor looks amazing though. I wonder what that would sound like with high tuning. Great video as always guys!
I think a good challenge for this channel would be to find a BDC drum that doesn’t sound amazing.
Bonus points for 8 bit flying whales❤️

Damn that Canopus... bloody hell
I donknow I was diggin the kick more than anything all mic and room mic it sounded great….
Oh, well yeah, tuff to choose on the snares😮
12:00 Gojira 8 bit hahaha
That Gretsch solid steel is the clear winner here… unreal crack and body. Kick drum sounds unreal too
Cave In!
Brodsky is goated
The sound of the beginning of dunnett remind me ''Innuendo'' of Queen.
I’m freaking out over Keplinger for sure and where is the joyful noise - any of them?? Aren’t they the shiz nugget???!! That’s my highest compliment:)
Tie for #1 for me was the Canopus (Editor, good choice!) and the Tama Bell Brass $$$
tyvm
Supralite surrounded by expensive snares. I like it 😂

😎👍♥️🇺🇸🇨🇦🥁🔊🎼RONN ROCKS!!!
Sonor bronze was such a banger 🥁
DCP doesn't have better drums than anyone else. They just know how to record drums the way I like them. (this is me talking myself out of buying all their drums)
Thank you! 👊
Hey buy them all, then you can open your own snare drumstore after you have picked your personal no.1😂
What series SONOR Kick and Floor tom were you using??? That kick is KILLER!
Looks like it’s a Sonor Designer. They don’t produce them anymore. I like their bass drum lugs and kick spurs. They need to bring that series back!
*…..I mean I like their bass drum claws.
Sonor and Supralite 😅🤘🏻
Are you guys using Earthworks mics?
10:35 Don Cabellero's American Don, but from Temu?
Piglet
What's the Songintro on the 7th Snare?
George Way was awesome. Bell brass Tama love but not going to happen. Surprise loved the 50 anniversary Tama. Couple others loved but not in my price range. Really all were beautiful snares ❤
George Way, N&C , Canopus of course and always Ludwig even the cheapo one !
What hihat is used in most of these?
I think the Dunnett sounded best on these recordings.
Nice 8-bit version of Bananas and Blow BTW😅
Jednoznačně Tama Mastercraft a Canopus. Bude to ale i tím že oba měli vyšší ladění než ostatní. 🥁👍
Dad! Dad! AGHHHHHHHHHH! love it! Man when the aristocrat came up, I immediately thought, yup that's the one!
8:16 midi Queen - One Vision?
The Darkness - very Queen-like.
The Sonor and Dunnett cast bronze drums would have sounded better if tuned higher IMO. The Tama anniversary cast bronze sounded better, but it seemed to be tuned higher. Do they have a strong back?
I had one once 😢. When I sold my Imperialstar kit it went with it.
That Dunnet was Phat
Canopus Bronze 1st Sonor Bronze 2nd Dunnet Classic 3rd .
What a model kick are you using?
On green Sonor
SQ2 medium maple bass drum and heavy maple toms
Hmm for Sonor they are the Beech masters but I prefer the cut/bite/attack/ bark/woof of a sonor Birch snare even with my vintage teardrop beech Sonor kit.

You can, Keith moon used to do it. You just won’t have as much range.
that Ludwig.. ❤
Can you guys run a test on different brands of hardware?
It’s been on the list forever. 😬
Ludwig and Tama for me. Streets ahead in fact.
