Shot Bro. I’m from NZ too. Currently riding around Pakistan. Thanks for the tips. I don’t bother going for the motion blur with NDs because I don’t want the incredible sights I’m seeing blurred at all. But I appreciate it’s for that cinematic look, and not vlogging like I do. Great video.
@@captain_midlife, well, now I'm curious to know why? Why would we not use NDs for travel? Is it because you'd prefer to show the details without blurring over cinematics?
In a week I'm going to cross Vietnam on a motorcycle, and I'm going to use your settings, I hope to get something similar to what you show in your videos, they look great.
I was having trouble with pixelation on the pavement moving in front of me. Like a band of extreme graininess and halo of pixelation around the bars and clocks. Light poles looked like PS2 Gran Turismo graphics. Was trying, in my ignorance, all kind of setting changes and probably just making it worse. I used yours today and my footage looks excellent now! I finally have a baseline to experiment with and if I mess it up again I’ll just revert back to this. Just wanted to say thanks because I was getting frustrated.
I see you’re in Auckland! I’m hoping to get my first ever bike this weekend and I would love to start bike content too. Glad I came across your channel!
Wow!! That is great content. The most clear and helpful information I have ever come across that works for a complete jackass like me when it comes to Camera/Comp set up and operation. Thanks. Cheers, Sparky.
Nice vid man! Have you had eny problems with the GoPro? I want to get a camera and I really want a GoPro but I have only seen bad reviews about the performance on them. Problems with overheating, lack of consistency and more. Has that happened to you?
Hi.. the problem is, digital stabilization works best with fast shutter speed like 1/200 or at least 1/100... with smooth road you can get away with slow shutter (or ND filters) but as soon as you got bumps or rough streets the footage will be unusable... i have full set of NDs that i finally never use on the scenario where i need digital stabilization, which is like almost every time.
@@captain_midlife oh really.. my footages looks terrible, i even set it on manual... but once i raised it on 1/100 its getting smooth and best on 1/200 up. Are you sure your street are rough..? it was all seems like smooth asphalt... or maybe your bike suspension helped a lot...? I even think to buy one of those gimbal for 25fps rate.
how do you fair with changing batteries when its in the media mod? i find it quite annoying completely dismounting the camera and removing it from the mod case to change batteries then mount it again to the proper veiw you had before. do you have a work around for this?
I can see your channel going a long way :) keep it up and I love your content... Do you color grade your footage? I use the exact same setup but videos come out a bit too vibrant if I leave it in gopro mode and if I record raw its too washed out.
If you don’t like go pro color, use raw and color grading isn’t too hard. Seems washed out at first but you can get a lot more natural look by just tuning in the contrast, vibrance, shadows and saturation, just slide bars unless you want more or less of a certain color, unless you’re trying to highlight a certain area that will work with most raw, d-cinelike, 10-bit, d-log, etc. most look rather flat until graded a bit.
I’m not even sure go-pro has that option or any other color profiles, I’m speaking of these types of color profiles in general, I’m watching your stuff to learn the dang thing lol
Thnx a lot , my mic was not working and i was so confused ... now i got the problem i was putting all 3 threads ☺️ of the mic .. well lets check it out by putting only 2 threads .. will tell u shortly if it works
Hi and thanks for sharing. I am starting to set up for a motvlog. The only problem I have is wind noise. I am using a lav mic connected to GoPro media mod and have the mic tucked and hidden in the helmet with foam filter and fluffy cover. Anything above 60kph becomes distorted with wind noise and clips out. Any tips on that issue? Thanks again
I did some fiddling and got to a much better result. Placed the mic in front of the cheek pad. Most importantly closed a few side vents on my helmet using some tape. MUCH better. It’s all about trial and error.
I cudn’t really see much difference with MD8 filters on my GP11 - but noticed my pro settings were different to yours so may have to try again here in bad weather UK
Thanks for the walk around of the camera. I’m just starting and your info is invaluable! Just a question about the mic array on the media mod. Do you have them disabled and only get sound from the cable mic in your helmet? I ask since I see that you have the foam cover on the media mod mic, and was wondering.
Maybe a stupid question, I see you have a short cable attached and i can only find mics with like 1,5 to 3m cables. Did you shorten it yourself or is it an ''external'' cable? Great content by the way!!
I’ve screwed up so much nice footage using that quick capture feature I won’t use it now. I must be holding the button down too long but with gloves on it’s not easy to press so I turn it on before I start riding.
Was up brother any idea why when I connect my mic(with the two black rings ) I only get audio from the left side. I tried three different mics and two different media mods and I get the same results. Thanks in advance
How do you deal with changing weather/lighting conditions with the ND filter? On my recent trip I had days where it was sunny in the morning, cloudy and raining in the afternoon and then back to sunny again. I forgot to change my ND filter so some of the footage ended up being either too dark or too light. Would be awesome if there was a variable nd for the GoPro.
I have a GoPro11 black ,I messed up my footage with the shutter speed setting and now everything looks extremely white washed. Tried to fix it in Davinci Resolve but its irreversable. Any tips?
I assume you have already resolved the problem, but if not, set it back to Auto or put an ND filter on if you want to stick to the lower shutter speed.
With these settings, all my shots are overexposed. Unfortunately I had to throw away 2 days of recordings from a trip that I had wanted to do for a long time and of which I wanted to record. How is this possible?? 🤨😪

Yeah I don’t think I’d use NDs doing travel like that either

Sweet as. I’m a Kiwi living in the US. Just started vlogging and my video kinda sucks, so i’m learning. Thx!
you're telling me I didn't know quick capture was a thing? Wow that's a game changer!
Awesome information I will be using this for my new GoPro Hero 10 black for my bike videos 👍
Subbed mate, very in depth and explained well thanks mate safe riding from australia 🇦🇺
My first time here, my impression: top notch content and presentation. Good to keep as a reference video. Thank you for sharing your skills.
Clear, to the point.. great video mate! Subscribed 👌🏼
Brilliant job, mate. I learnt a lot from watching your video - esp about ND filters. All the best.
Thanks mate

Absolute cheat code of a video mate! now I know exactly what I need to get this setup!
Amazing production quality with this video bro 💯
Thanks mate
Thank you for the details in this video!
Awesome! Thanks for all the info.
I found leaving stabilization on with an nd filter and lower shutter speeds created conflict… turned it off and got the motion blur I was looking for

Thanks for your video. So do we still need the ND filter at nighttime?
Amazing quality, thank you!
Hi, what nd filter would you use riding in the night?

It’s nz. Our roads suck. They look smooth because the shutter speed is at 1/50th

same exact thing for me using a Tascam D05x

It won’t do anything unless you have the shutter speed locked
Love the name Captin Midlife
Fits me well lol 41 and spending money on stupid shit all the time

Just a question about the mic array on the media mod. Do you have them disabled and only get sound from the cable mic in your helmet?
I ask since I see that you have the foam cover on the media mod mic, and was wondering.
It’s automatically disabled when you plug a mic into it
Very clear voice wow my helmet is a flip up and causes me lots of problems

Loving the content dude! Random question, do you know if the media mod records and processes the audio differently to the 3.5mm mic adaptor?
Not at all.
I’ve screwed up so much nice footage using that quick capture feature I won’t use it now. I must be holding the button down too long but with gloves on it’s not easy to press so I turn it on before I start riding.
I have doubt here 3:16 , did you put dcat on microphone or you placed it after you put microphone 😅
If I use a lavalier mic do I need to change some extra settings?
How can i use this adapter and still charge my gopro Hero 7
How does this setup do in rainy weathers?
it would be nice if GoPro made a Mist lens or the Max Lents Nd
I wanted to ask, does the lapel and media mod mic record audio at the same time.
Shutter on 1/50 with Hypersmooth on and an ND filter? I heard Hypersmooth needs atleast a shutter of 1/250 otherways the footage will be shaky
But when ND filters are on you can't use stabilisation on the camera right ?
Yes you can. All my videos have stab on
🙏
Was up brother any idea why when I connect my mic(with the two black rings ) I only get audio from the left side. I tried three different mics and two different media mods and I get the same results. Thanks in advance
Maybe the media mod is faulty or something. Unless you’re using an adapter, but in editing just make the track mono and it’ll send it to both sides
What's the best editing software you would recommend ?
I use final cut pro. Used to use premiere but it just crashes all the time
What size SD Card do you use?
My buddy in go pro 11 , no need to use go pro mic adpator if i used purple panda microphone kit
Really. So where do you plug the microphone into

That’s why you have to use auto iso. Set the minimum and maximum
@@captain_midlife Interesting. I never thought about that. I always set the ISO to minimum as I don't want grainy footage.
Where your preset link sir?
I have a GoPro11 black ,I messed up my footage with the shutter speed setting and now everything looks extremely white washed. Tried to fix it in Davinci Resolve but its irreversable. Any tips?
I assume you have already resolved the problem, but if not, set it back to Auto or put an ND filter on if you want to stick to the lower shutter speed.
why aren't you filming on 5K ? i have seen your preset resolution on 4K 25fps, is it because it consume more battery at the end ? thanks
Cause it’s pointless imo
@@captain_midlife ok thanks for the reply👍
How did you get your ND lenses to connect to the media mod for the 8
I wasn’t using the media mod on the 8
So if I were to be using the 8 on my helmet how would I set it up so I wouldn’t need a mic adapter and while using ND filters
You have to use the mic adapter

@@captain_midlife No, I did not.
Then you didn’t follow the settings. You have to use the NDs like I said.
