Hi. I'm Jennifer from Workroom Social, and I'm going to show you how to load a bobbin into your sewing machine. So, the first thing you want to do is thread your sewing machine. After your sewing machine is threaded, you want to take your wound bobbin and you kind of want to just extend a little thread to have as a small tail.
Now, my machine has an arm here that comes off, so I'm going to take that off and move it aside. My sewing machine is a vertical bobbin. There are also some machines that are horizontal bobbins. So, you should just go back to your user's manual to see instructions for loading your bobbin.
On my machine, I have a casing here. This is a bobbin casing, and I'm going to take my bobbin and I want to place it inside my casing with the thread going counter clockwise. And I'm just going to look and see that this notch, which is where the thread is going to go through, is going sort of to the left.
So, I want my thread to go in the same direction as the bobbin casing, and then I'm going to take the thread and kind of pull it under there. And now you can see when I pull the thread, the bobbin turns.
So, now with the bobbin in the casing, you're going to go ahead and load it into your machine. You'll take this little lever and hold it out. That will keep your bobbin from falling out of the casing, because that is kind of annoying when it's rolling all around on your floor. And then you are just going to place it into your machine. There is this little notch up at the top, that there is a corresponding notch in the machine, so you can't really mess it up.
Just put it in until it gets into place and it doesn't turn, and then you can let go of that lever. Now, that's in and that's steady. The last thing you want to do is you want to pull this thread up though your throat plate, so that both threads are underneath your presser foot.
So, to do that, you'll just hold your needle thread. And using the hand wheel on the right, you're going to twist it towards you to send the needle down, and back up, and then you'll kind of tug on this thread, and there is a bobbin thread. They're two different colors, so you can see this one is the bobbin thread and the purple is the needle thread. You'll just put those towards the back of your machine, and now you're ready to sew.

Though bobbin direction does not always affect sewing on vertical mounted bobbins, this type bobbin orientation should always have the bobbin turning clockwise when the bobbin faces you and you pull the thread. You have installed the bobbin counterclockwise in this video.
This will affect lower bobbin tension and on some machines will not sew correctly. Top loading bobbins(bobbins that lay horizontal) do care and will not sew properly if not oriented correctly and normally turn counter clockwise but you need to verify with your machines manual.

I could never remember if when I thread my machine if the foot should be up or down, and which way to turn the hand wheel. You just solved that for me, so thanks.... I sew so little I forget how, sometimes, LoL.... I also watched a video on how to tighten my bobbin holder as its always getting tangled up in there. I have brother's low grade machine, has about 5 built in stitches and that is probably 3 more than I've ever used LOL... I'm a guy, live alone after 2 divorces since 2001, so I taught myself to sew based on watching my mom sew (she was good at it making dresses etc.) just so I could fix clothes I ripped or patch holes to get a bit more life from my work shirts, and soon I hope to hem my own jeans, unless the store will do it for $10 or $15 bucks, then they measure and get things even etc. I have already had success hemming my work pants. However, thanks for this video, I gave you a thumbs up and appreciate your time in producing this. FYI, I didn't actually sit with my mom and get lessons, I just watched her cut patterns out and I saw her sewing. I was too busy building race cars or being out in the garage. But now I find fixing my own stuff where applicable a money & time saver + my machine is portable so I can sew in front of the TV, best of both worlds huh? I had to brush up again, I have not had my machine out in two years, and I have some clothes that need simple repairs...... Your video helped me save probably a lot of time, so thanks again.

Thanks for this video. I just got an industrial style machine with this vertical style bobbin and the worst 'how to' instruction book ever. I have only owned top bobbins before this machine. Thanks, you saved me a ton of "What the heck?!" with this machine. =)

Our new sewing machine doesn’t explain the bobbin thread technique - using the hand wheel and needle to ‘catch’ the bottom thread.
Thanks for clearly showing that in this video😅

Thank you for this. I decided to learn how to sew about 20 min ago and this was the first question that came up.
