I have a question: when you cut the pattern, do you need to leave some extra space for where you're going to be sewing? if not, where do I sew it, to make the right size? because I imagine that if you sew too far from the edge the garment will be tighter... or not? Sorry, I'm just learning and I still have never sewn anything!
This is a great question! What you’re referring to is called seam allowance (SA). The distance you sew from the edge of the fabric. The pattern instructions should tell you how much SA is included. If none is included, then you can add some in yourself. But most standard patterns include a 1.5cm SA. In the video when I mark in the labels on the pattern I should have also marked in what the given SA was to make it clear. Sorry about that! But the pattern instructions should tell you, and sticking to the SA will give you a true-to-size fit! Hope this helps!

Yep this is Canada too. Apparently there is a reason for this tissue paper pattern paper. Supposed to be easier to pin or something. I say do what works for you

My two adult daughters have recently expressed an interest in learning how to sew, so I thought we might watch a few videos together before we go buy patterns, fabric and notions. At 56 years old I find myself as the stay-at-home parent for an 11-year-old boy who just joined Boy Scouts. I am now having pants, sewing on patches, and trying to make a vest for said patches to hang on. I haven't touched a sewing machine since 9th grade home ec. Thank you for helping me remember things I forgot a billion years ago.
As a parent of a scout, I’d suggest buying clear thread for the patches. It’s makes life so much simpler! However, it does make it harder to thread the needle, lol.
@@babblesp1367 yup, know that trick. SO far color matching hasn't been that big of an issue. I actually found a sand and a olive thread that match the shirt and pants colors really well. I have some clear in reserve in case I need it. Also have sand colored velcro for the rank path, as well as other likely to be replaced patches.

I've cut out all the patterns but not the material, and I have the material which is, soft felt and an inner lining. Goodness 4 years ago..here we go. Hi there, I’m a 14 year old plain girl who simply likes cute clothing like the pants you wore and I got gifted a VERY old Brother’s sewing machine. There are a few defects such as the bobbin holder being broken (I kinda fixed it with tape and yeah it’s fine.) or the VERY OLD sewing thread snapping sometimes (WHICH IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING) but I just found this video which I’m incredibly thankful for and hopefully I’ll be able to create something that’ll make my great grandmother proud (she gave me the machine..ahem. We had to learn sewing in middle school and I hated it. I thought it was boring but now I realize how cool it is to be able to make your own chlothes. I would like to learn sewing again but I don't have a sewing machine. I was thinking of learning to sew by hand and if I learn the basics and start to like it I will get a machine. My grandmother used to make a living making chlothes so I know she will help me learn again if I ask her. Next time I visit hole I will definetly ask for some tips from her!❤

The pants turned out super cute! Very well explained. My only request would be to have a visual when explaining the “grain line”. It’s probably pretty simple and I may be making it more complicated than it is but perhaps a ‘correct’ example. Then, an ‘incorrect’ example as a visual -if you would be up for it next time. Thank you 🙏😊
It is simpler than it made to be...the grainline is a guide to positioning your fabric, so you're not cutting on the bias (diagonal to fabric threads). So if you look closely at the fabric weave and see the cross threads, position the pattern so it's parallel to the fabric grain (usually parallel to the selvedge edge).
New sub here! We love a good technic vid! I just want to add some of my thoughts…. Cutting the pattern is not a problem in modern sewing as you normally buy a downloadable file that you keep on you computer to print over and over again. When it comes to buying printed patterns (like vintage patterns) that’s wise to trace it and maintain the original piece intact. (Those are expensive and mostly unique). And for those who gonna trace it on another paper and do not have a poking device you can use a thinner transparent paper (frequently used for pattern making) that you can lay over the original pattern and just trace over it it. 😘 Ps: I looooovew the pants 😻😻😻

Ahh ur an angel!! I’m in fashion class at school and I’ve always had a passion for fashion. I started hand sewing when I was 10 and I made a bag. Now that im in fashion class, I’ve made a couple of other things. My mom bought me my very own sewing machine, and im sooo excited. As soon as I get the chance, I can’t wait to start experimenting. Ahhh. I can save so much money, and suprise my family and friends!! So excited
So imagine learning how to sew during elementary and high school by watching mom and making a few things like a skirt, straight paints... then you decide to start sewing again as a more mature woman. My mom never traced the pattern. She laid it out and we would pin it but follow along the size we were making, never cutting the pattern itself. I don’t recall how we pinned it so I came here. I’m not sure I’m willing to trace and cut out a template first 😩
What I learned in school was to put the pins parallel to the lines of the pattern and cut as close to the pins as possible (assuming the pattern includes seam allowance). We'd pin both the pattern and the fabric like 1-2 millimeters inside of the line that designates the size we'd be making. Then we would gently peel back the edge of the pattern until we reached the pin line and would cut along the line. If you want, you can sort of redrape the pattern over your shears so that you can see the pattern lines and notches a bit better. I hope that made sense/was helpful!

I learned to pin the pattern directly to the fabric also... pins horizontal to the pattern edge, but the way she does it allows you to trace it onto paper in the size you want thus maintaining the original pattern in case you need to size up or down for future garments

I just purchased a machine because I needed a item made (sleeping bag) but while practicing I’m quickly falling in love with it. Latin schools teach boys and girls real skills like sewing. What a helpful video! I’m wondering, is it possible to switch between sizes in a pattern? For example if my hips are a 12 but my waist is a 10, can I use the two different sizes on the pattern? I’m imagining just like… connecting the two lines somewhere in the middle?
I am 38 and have never used a sewing machine in my life. However, I yearn to sew! This is my first sewing video ever. Before this video, I didn't even know whether or not to cut out the fabric at the same time as the pattern, or cut out a pattern at all. I didn't know a pattern displayed different sizes of the same style, or how to use a rotary wheel or the fabric- aerator- pizzacutter pokeywheel. This video was a huge help in learning new sewing skills.

@@joannaszulc1496 an ovelocker is for finishing raw edges to make fabric look clean and neat , that's all it does. And a sewing machine actually sees together the clothes

Goodness 4 years ago..here we go. Hi there, I’m a 14 year old plain girl who simply likes cute clothing like the pants you wore and I got gifted a VERY old Brother’s sewing machine. There are a few defects such as the bobbin holder being broken (I kinda fixed it with tape and yeah it’s fine.) or the VERY OLD sewing thread snapping sometimes (WHICH IS INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING) but I just found this video which I’m incredibly thankful for and hopefully I’ll be able to create something that’ll make my great grandmother proud (she gave me the machine..ahem. Hidden lore.) Have a lovely day, and to anyone losing motivation or getting frustrated or simply don’t have a fricking iron like me lol KEEP SEWING YOU GOT THIS!

You’re just a doll! Thank you for posting this! I’ve wanted to learn to sew forever and when my granny passed on, I made up my mind to learn. She could sew beautifully. I just learned how to operate my sewing machine lmbo. So, I’m very very green. I have an apron pattern of my granny’s and now I can understand it too lol. You’re pleasant to listen to and you get to the point. So, if you wanted to post a ton of tutorial videos for beginners, I believe people would watch. Just sayin’. 😊😎

I just needed to say “ thank you” so much for your help! I just started making a dress with my first pattern and I was very intimidated! Your video was so helpful. If there’s anything I still had questions about, it was the type of stitching mentioned…baste, slip stitch, etc. I just don’t know all of the terminology yet.

We had to learn sewing in middle school and I hated it. I thought it was boring but now I realize how cool it is to be able to make your own chlothes. I would like to learn sewing again but I don't have a sewing machine. I was thinking of learning to sew by hand and if I learn the basics and start to like it I will get a machine. My grandmother used to make a living making chlothes so I know she will help me learn again if I ask her. Next time I visit hole I will definetly ask for some tips from her!❤

The pants turned out super cute! Very well explained. My only request would be to have a visual when explaining the “grain line”. It’s probably pretty simple and I may be making it more complicated than it is but perhaps a ‘correct’ example. Then, an ‘incorrect’ example as a visual -if you would be up for it next time. Thank you 🙏😊
It is simpler than it made to be...the grainline is a guide to positioning your fabric, so you're not cutting on the bias (diagonal to fabric threads). So if you look closely at the fabric weave and see the cross threads, position the pattern so it's parallel to the fabric grain (usually parallel to the selvedge edge).
@@5DNRG So if you're cutting twill would you want it to appear diagonal (while actually being parallel)?

Cutting the pattern is not a problem in modern sewing as you normally buy a downloadable file that you keep on you computer to print over and over again. When it comes to buying printed patterns (like vintage patterns) that’s wise to trace it and maintain the original piece intact. (Those are expensive and mostly unique). And for those who gonna trace it on another paper and do not have a poking device you can use a thinner transparent paper (frequently used for pattern making) that you can lay over the original pattern and just trace over it it. 😘

Ahh ur an angel!! I’m in fashion class at school and I’ve always had a passion for fashion. I started hand sewing when I was 10 and I made a bag. Now that im in fashion class, I’ve made a couple of other things. My mom bought me my very own sewing machine, and im sooo excited. As soon as I get the chance, I can’t wait to start experimenting. Ahhh. I can save so much money, and suprise my family and friends!! So excited
So imagine learning how to sew during elementary and high school by watching mom and making a few things like a skirt, straight paints... then you decide to start sewing again as a more mature woman. My mom never traced the pattern. She laid it out and we would pin it but follow along the size we were making, never cutting the pattern itself. I don’t recall how we pinned it so I came here. I’m not sure I’m willing to trace and cut out a template first 😩
What I learned in school was to put the pins parallel to the lines of the pattern and cut as close to the pins as possible (assuming the pattern includes seam allowance). We'd pin both the pattern and the fabric like 1-2 millimeters inside of the line that designates the size we'd be making. Then we would gently peel back the edge of the pattern until we reached the pin line and would cut along the line. If you want, you can sort of redrape the pattern over your shears so that you can see the pattern lines and notches a bit better. I hope that made sense/was helpful!

I learned to pin the pattern directly to the fabric also... pins horizontal to the pattern edge, but the way she does it allows you to trace it onto paper in the size you want thus maintaining the original pattern in case you need to size up or down for future garments
I'm generally a wood/metal working maker, and am just taking baby steps into this form of making - and this is freaking brilliant.

I just purchased a machine because I needed a item made (sleeping bag) but while practicing I’m quickly falling in love with it. Latin schools teach boys and girls real skills like sewing. I was exposed during my primary years in school. So awesome. Expect me around for a while. I decided to make my wife a denim jacket using fabric and parts of old pants. Stay tuned.

What a helpful video! I’m wondering, is it possible to switch between sizes in a pattern? For example if my hips are a 12 but my waist is a 10, can I use the two different sizes on the pattern? I’m imagining just like… connecting the two lines somewhere in the middle?
I am 38 and have never used a sewing machine in my life. However, I yearn to sew! This is my first sewing video ever. Before this video, I didn't even know whether or not to cut out the fabric at the same time as the pattern, or cut out a pattern at all. I didn't know a pattern displayed different sizes of the same style, or how to use a rotary wheel or the fabric- aerator- pizzacutter pokeywheel. This video was a huge help in learning new sewing skills.

My janome is just a regular sewing machine and then the singer is an overlocker!
