This was my favourite song on American Top 40 on Ö3 (an Austrian radio) when my father made some tricks and we were able to listen to western radio in the depth of socialism in the middle of Slovakia (then part of Czechoslovakia). I didn't know English, had no idea what they're singing about. But the music sounded like something from the forbidden heaven :-)

Yes, in Reality, it was a hard time to the Music Lovers of the whole of Eastern Europe, which was the Soviet Union, strong control and discrimination. This also applied to my native Lithuania. Many of our called the Socialist - Communist Bloc: "SOVIET LAGER".
The Biggest Reprieve in the long 80's was - Radio Luxembourg !!! The station aired exceptionally Capitalist States Music Hits, which are terribly did not like the Soviet Union's political - ideological commanders!!! (The station was just a sip of enriching the human freedoms since Soviet propaganda)!!! An attempt was made to extinguish various ways - by preventing the Luxembourg radio broadcasting And sometimes we experience and very upset then. A good solution would be at home to have a Soviet production tube amp Radijola (Radio) with turntables 33/45 speed. My father had 'Chaika' ( "CAIKA" ) 'the name of the radio. Attached there to have coiled coil from natural copper wire and attach it to the ceiling :) Yes Yes, That is True!

Jeff Lynne should be a household name in every music circle. A wizard and a genius and probably the most underrated prolific songwriter in history. ELO will always be one of my all time faves. You cant beat those elaborate arrangements and creativity.

Not only is Jeff Lynne a Legend for himself & ELO, but he rebooted the careers of some pretty famous artists - can anyone say "George Harrison" & "Tom Petty", not to mention The Traveling Wilburys - He wrote so many thing for so many - period and never stood up and said it was all him - never..... What an absolute Class Act of a person as well as a Number One Artist - He did so much for so many and simply enjoyed doing it - a very rare and special artist/person

Mine too. I went and bought the Balance of Power cassette after seeing the video. I remember driving to this song in a big old car that belonged to my grandparents. I've always thought this song would be great for the opening credits of a happy popular film that opens at an airport.

I love you ELO , was listening to your music since I was 8yr old way back I was in the Philippines until now I am in the US.
I bought many of their records in the 1970s and '80s. There was no band like ELO as they had their own style. This was their last top 40 hit in the USA. It was a long run and a great memorable ride.
Even down to a trio, they still have that BIG sound! One of my fave ELO songs of all time.
