Start better, have more power, a bit quieter, the lb7 duramax gave powerstroke and Cummins a run for their money, if it weren't for injector longevity issues, the lb7 would be a top dog for the early 2000's diesel IMO.
I had trouble getting a 7.3 started with treated fuel, and jump start pack and jumper cables hooked to my lml. That was with it plugged in. My lly only had trouble below -15
I tell ya, duramax has me sold, I've driven a 6.0 powerjoke, just didn't see the appeal, drove a 5.9 Cummins, torque for days, but lacks the hp to make that torque get you anywhere fast, duramax just hits all the buttons very well
I miss my 04.5 lly, but my lml is shaping up to be my dream diesel. Its fully deleted, new turbo, cp3 conversion, s&b intake, air dog lift pump and using the ez link for programming. After all of that it will finally outrun and outpull my lly. If it werent for that damn $1200/month payment (which im almost done paying off) my truck would be done and turn out to be the best performing diesel ive owned to date. Since switching to duramax ive said goodbye to tranny issues, computer issues, death wobble, and a sore ass on long trips. None of them are perfect, but the duramax takes care of me.
I’ve actually also noticed that thermostat “ticking” when I plug in my 04.5 LLY. First noticed it right after I replaced the block heater. I just assumed that meant it was working lol. I’ve had it plugged in overnight a handful of times this winter in Michigan and nothing has happened. Fires right up and doesn’t hesitate one bit. If it’s low teens I have to plug mine in if I wanna get to work on time 😂. Are your thermostats new? I’ve noticed my truck taking a while to heat up and rarely gets above 180 in the winter unless I get on the freeway. Summer it’s always around 190-210.
The thermostats were new. I understand, I know its working, just noticed a noise. It takes forever for my truck to warm up also, but the winter front helps alot,
@@2005llyduramax Yep got the grill cover on mind as well. I was amazed I took my fathers 2019 l5p to work the other day and it was already at 210 within a few miles of back road/country road driving. Lower 20s outside that day.
Yeah, those intake heaters do a fantastic job of heating the engine. I regret not keeping mine. I wish there was a high flow intake that included the heater. Plus the new trucks are soo choked I'm sure all the heat and back pressure contributes to that fast warm up also. At least in my mind.
I know balance rates aren't the end all be all answer, but the amount of work it takes to do a return rate test would just be a waste of time on my truck, I already know their all on their way out, it's just which one is the worst off and sticking, 200k miles on injectors is probably more than enough to call them toast
Why does the lly get 16 mpg and the LBZ get 13? If If I’m buying a built cat eye should I get an lly or LBZ? The LBZ obviously had an extra gear and stock comes with more hp, just wondering.
Well, just going off the mpg avg display doesn't mean anything, my hand calculated avg in the lbz is almost 2mpg lower cause of the tunes I'm running. But it all really depends on the way the trucks are driven, I always reset my mpg avg, dad almost never does, so long road trips = better mileage for him, where I at the time of this video did nothing but city driving, and I'm a lead foot. If you buy and 06 lly or 06 lbz, their the same engine, just different stock tunes. If you get an 06 lly, and you get tunes for it, just tell the tuner its and 06 lly and you want the added hp to be right where the lbz is. They both have 6 speeds, so no worry there,
@@2005llyduramax really? Are there any differences between the lly and LBZ besides that? They say something about an LB7 or LLY swap for something because the LBZ’s was weak
To be honest, my 06 sierra had a broken crank when I bought it, but that also had 343k miles and had been beaten to death. The lbz has better rods than the lb7 and lly, but also has a tad inferior pistons to the lb7 and lly engines. Supposedly for the best daily driver build, would be lbz rods and lb7 or lly pistons, I don't believe there were any differences between cranks, but don't quote me on that. I'd go after the lbz, last of the pre-emission trucks, has great towing performance and daily driver aspects, and the 6 speed is hard to beat. Just don't get ppei tunes for the lbz, me and dad are not impressed at all. And I've had my programing issues with ppei and they denied any problem. I have videos on most of this stuff already.
@@2005llyduramax yeah where I live in illinois I haven’t heard much about tuning. I definitely plan on an LBZ with 150k-ish miles. Efi live and transmission tune, cold air intake, FASS fuel pump, that’s about all I want to do to it. I want to be able to run it stock, but also have a fine where I can push short of 500 hp
I hear ya there, I'm probably close to 450 in my lb7, I'd like to go higher, but the trans should be next on the list, it hates life with what I make it do. My lbz I did a banks triple disc torque converter, cause I was pushing through the stock one which I hear is pretty common with higher power applications. I love the power that it puts down, but it hits hard when you just want to daily drive. The one lift pump I want to try is the fleece in tank lift pump, vs a frame mounted one.
06 never had a lly 😂😂 and the other truck is grumpy and misses probably cause the diesel is gelling up cause they don’t have fuel bowl heaters just coolant heaters that’s why they get plugged in
They did have an 06 lly, 06 had a vin 2 and vin D known as an lly. It's and lbz detuned to lly spec. All you have to do is Google it. In all my dmax years, I've never had diesel gel on me. My dad has once like 15 years ago. My truck starts -30°f without being plugged in. Frig, just did a -11° cold start video today I haven't uploaded yet, but not plugged in and not gelled.

No not that, I've never had fuel gel on me yet, the additives I've used have done me well, even though -40°f real temp. Sticky injector. I still have it too, only below 15°f.
Put a whole bottle of Howe’s Diesel Treat in it and go get some Hotshot Stiction eliminator! My truck used to do the same thing 06 lbz three injectors were -6.0 and worse. Three days of driving and those two bottle and everything is in spec and runs like a dream!
The classic body style trucks look so sharp with the new Denali wheels. Nice truck
Thanks, It was my favorite looking truck.
The most beautiful trucks, start right up even in the cold, reminds me of the LBZ my dad used to, super reliable
Great video😁
Thanks, They'll only get better!
I’m both a Ford and Chevy guy but the older duramax engines start up better in the cold than the older powerstrokes

LBZ GMC was mad, most diesels don't like the cold

You remind me of my neighbor he have 3 Duramax diesel! lol
Nice rides there Fellow Minnesotan!

Are you running wheel spacers or adapters on the black dirtymax
Yes, 1.5" hub centric
what year truck are those wheels from on the black truck?
2018 denali
Injector balance rates only give you a partial view of injector health. You need to do a return test on them too to tell if they are on the way out.

Fuel is gelling in line from tank
I wouldn't think so, it runs fine when high idles kicks in everytime, drives fine, only when cold does it have issue on start up, one bad injector.
Ever figure out why it was knocking? Mine is doing the same but only under throttle.
Injector is sticking till it warms up a touch,
