    Funny that you're telling this story, I was working in Afghanistan as a welder 5 years ago and when I had nothing to weld I would help the mechanics working on some Humvees, they had this one in particular that wouldn't go over 30mph, they changed the entire exhaust system, that didn't work so they changed the injection pump, that didn't work, then the turbo, haha, once I found out about it, I told that mechanic that he had a fuel delivery problem, they wouldn't wanna take advice from a welder so they installed an entire new crate engine and that didn't work either, I laughed so hard after all that effort and tax payer money they invested so in the end, it was just a crushed fuel line somewhere in the middle of the H1, yep I hate to say it but I told them so but hey I'm just a welder.

      How the hell did they make that mistake? First step in diagnostics is figuring out if you have fuel or not. If it isn't running or smoking white smoke like crazy than it isn't getting fuel. Can't miss that smoke.

      4x4Scout if it’s smoking white that means it’s not getting enough fuel? My lb7 is smoking a little bit and I was told it was injectors but the ones in it are only a couple years old. Could it just be not getting enough fuel?

    i spent 19 years as a GM tech, and anytime i had to do head gaskets on a duramax id lift the cab off. Id park the truck inbetween two lifts and could have the cab in the air in 1.5 hours. Makes life MUCH simpler!!!!

      My lly needs hg's. Tech said he was either going to pull the enging or the cab to do the job. Still have a few bucks to save before i can pull the trigger. 2005 SLT ccsb 4x4 300k miles.

    My family has had VERY good luck with the Duramax platform, myself included.
    Between us we currently own:
    2002 3500 4x4 WT (LB7 engine) - 442,xxx miles. 1 set of injectors @ 125,xxx miles covered under warranty.
    2003 2500 4x4 LT (LB7 engine) - 140,xxx miles. 0 issues other that general maintenance.
    2014 2500 4x4 LT (LML engine) (my truck) - 57,xxx miles. DEF heater tank module was replaced last week under warranty (GM Bulletin out for this issue).
    2016 3500 4x4 High Country (LML engine) - 4,xxx miles. No issues as of yet other than a loose fuel filter from the factory.
    Used to own the following:
    2003 3500 4x4 LTZ (LB7 engine) - Sold @ 278,xxx miles. 1 set of injectors replaced @ 199,xxx miles under warranty.
    2006 3500 4x4 LTZ (LBZ engine) - Sold @ 345,xxx miles. 2 glow plugs were replaced @ 312,xxx miles.
    With just over 1.25 million miles combined between them and having very minimal issues (knock on wood) other than injectors (which GM covered), we will never have anything else but Duramax.. And the Allison transmission is indestructible.
    The weak part of these trucks is fuel filtration and delivery as there is no lift pump. All 4 of the trucks now have an Airdog 4g lift pump / fuel water separator installed to prevent any filtration issues and will also supply an abundant amount of fuel.
    Just like you stated in the video, it all comes down to GENERAL MAINTENANCE on these trucks.

      Robertson Enterprises in my family we have Owned 3.
      2002 3500 4x4 6 speed trans flat dump lb7 no problem with it so far but prev owner had injector problems.
      2006 2500 4x4 auto trans lbz it had a electrical problem bought it brand new and it burn up in I think 2010 because of the electric problem.
      And now another 2006 2500 4x4 6 speed trans and the dash lights tend to cut out every now and then but other than that they are an amazing motor.

    Last summer I had to do head gaskets on my friends 2005 Chevy 2500 LLY Duramax. We started with trying to do it without removing the engine from the truck, but found it wasn't worth dealing with all of the obstacles on the driver side. So we pulled the motor with the passenger side head already off. These engines are extremely simple to remove once all of the wiring and grounds on the block are off. Our biggest problem was separating the transmission from the engine, the two dowels on the bell housing seized into the adapter on the back of the engine block, but some careful prying got them apart. When you pull the engine for the first time, usually a motor mount comes apart, but if they don't, it's a good thing to replace while you are there, because diesel motor mounts take a lot of stress. After removing the engine, the whole job was so much easier, and it made torquing everything down much easier too. We were also able to paint everything too because these blocks love to scale rust up here in salt country. Just some advice. I have a lot of respect for the guy on the video for doing it in the truck, very smart guy and he did it right.

      I did mine in the truck, proof in my videos BUT I should have pulled the cab instead. Super easy and makes working at the firewall so much faster. Torquing those 32 ARP headstuds wasnt fun, torquing them with engine on the ground would have been a pain

    You do a great job of explaining in a way anyone can understand. I have a 2002 GMC with a LB7 Bought it new and kept it for 11 years. It pulled a 37 ft fifth wheel it whole life with me. 440000 miles. I replaced a rear axle seal and a radio speaker in the passenger door. Just an amazing vehicle!!! Oh I should mention 5 set's of tires a 4 batteries.

    Own a 03 duramax since new. I installed the best injectors available, a fass fuel system-lift pump.Use a quality additive/fuel lubricant every tank. No tuner removed the muffler not the cat, service it often. So far the truck has been a reliable hard pulling machine. I am glad, these videos depicting 20 hours of labor are scary. Great job on your site..

      There are disadvantages of mechanical tuning lol. Adjusting fuel curve isnt as accurate. The common rail also helps with efficiency. But meh I'm still sitting here hoping the main bearings in my 350 gas dont give out because it was a rebuild from someone idk.

    I’ve owned an LB7 Dmax since new in 2002. The injectors were replaced under warranty at around 10k miles. Since then I replaced the transfer case and that’s it’s it’s the most reliable truck I’ve ever owned honestly.

    Invaluable information for a Duramax owner. At 145,000 my head gasket blew on my LLY engine. Followed closely behind by two fuel injectors failing. Now I don't feel so bad knowing this is "normal". Unfortunate, but now I know I'm not alone.

    LB7 is a lengthy injector job, I felt your pain, I added a bit more hassle to mine by adding a turbo and down pipe to the mix. A bit more time added fabricating a breaker bar to get down and around to get to down pipe flange bolts. Pulled up pipes as well and heat wrapped all of the exhaust piping at rear of engine to reduce heat at back of heads. Good tips on taking pictures and making notes and getting a manual, as they do have a lot hoses and wiring on top of engine. If your in there not a bad time for fuel pressure regulator at the pump, not easy to get to when fully assembled.

    great video Rich..thank you very much for it..I have a 02 LB7...327,000 plus miles..I have the FassTi150 with 10 micron fuel water separator and a 2 micron fuel filter on it....took the factory fuel filter house and thru it in the trash..then I took a piece of half inch stainless steel tubing,bent a 180 degree bend it ...and hose clamped it in factory fuel filter housings place..cleaner in the engine bay area

    Love my '07 DMax. Had to rebuild the injectors recently (do to bad fuel) and it's a MUCH easier job than on the older models! Consider it a MUST to install an improved filtration system like the FASS Titanium system which has a 10 micron water separator/filter and a 3 micron main filter as well as eliminating all vapor, bubbles, etc from the fuel going to the engine. With fresh Amsoil 5W40 oil, I'm getting ~ 22 mph on interstate hwy trips!

    You need many more subs for exposing this problem. My dad has a hauling business and once had a Chevy 3500 with a duramax. It always ran hot, lacked power, and had injector issues constantly. He will never buy a Chevy again and made the switch to a power stroke.

    Those injectors didn't start out dirty. That debris comes from rust between the nut and inejctor line when you removed it. Very common problem when you go in to change one LB7 injector that you contaminate the other 3 on that bank, so plan on doing all 4. LLY's fixed that problem by moving injectors outside the valve cover. That's is the majority of the issue with the LB7 injector system. Every time I do injectors I silicone the top of the nuts. no more issue. The head gaskets failed on my 01 LB7 at 185K. most of it's life with a tuner and being hooked to a loaded 30 foot trailer.... Also, for your head gasket jobs, it's much faster to remove the engine (can be removed in about 3-4 hours) and then go at the head gaskets. Much better quality repair and easier on your back. Last one I did took me 20 hours start to finish. Would never attempt to do head gaskets in-frame unless you could lift the body off or unless their was no other option. The LB7 is a fine motor, and just part of what is now the legendary duramax line.

      Will Hachey not really. Filtration is one of the most important parts of lb7 longevity. Get a fass or airdog and you’ll have much better luck with injectors and it’ll help the cp3

      @Pat Larimer must have really hurt the U.S. army also.😆 Fascinating they've used it for some many years. Its designed so you can fix it on the feild with minimal trouble.
      I've owned 3 now. Two LMLs and one L5p and have had no issues compared to friends with he other brands.

    I had 12V, I had several Duramax's, I had 2, 24V's one Vp44 one common rail, and I big mistake 6.0 F word, pain in the ass. Now I have a 1953 Chevy with a 12V and Allison tranny, all on a cut down tour bus chassis. I am still building it and can't wait for it to be done. I am a true believer in the 12 valve. I love your show's you are a hard working man. Aloha.

      ATX-CVPI 6.7s are great engines. They’re very similar to an LML. 6.0s are also pretty good engines if maintained properly

    while working as a lead technician at a large Chevrolet dealership for over 20 years we only had a couple of Duramax engines with head gasket issues all all of those had tuners on them, the Duramax pulls/towels great without a tuner but in the long run it damage the engine for that gain.
    And the rust that you see in the injector inlets didn't come from the fuel,it's from the cross over fuel pipes from the rail to the injector, moisture lays in them then the corrodes it and when you remove the pipe it falls into the injector,there is a GM bulletin about that and bead blasting the pipes but once the warrant and special coverage on the injectors was gone then we just replaced the pipes and 99.9 % of the time the reason you where removing them was to replace injectors anyway so no big deal if the rust got in the old ones just insure it was gone before reassembly.

    2003 lb7 290,000 miles 235hp tune, lift pump, exhaust, boost increase valve, stage 5 Allison, 7.5" lift and 37s 20 mpg highway. No head gasket or injector issues. Have broke a Allison, transfer case, the yoke on the rear diff and a rear drive shaft. Will never own another gasser.

    Great video! I just wanted to point out, the debris in the injector inlets you were pointing to is actually dirt in the long nut of the injection line that falls into the injector when you unscrew it. This is a common misconception that this contamination is actually in the fuel system.

    I owned an 01 with an LB7. It's a financial oddity, everything cost $700. Unless you replace the injectors, which costs upwards of $4000 in parts. Absolutely the worst truck I have ever owned, which had the unintended benefit of me realizing that I never needed another Duramax. Bought a Cummins, and never looked back. Great video.

    Thank you. I'm in the market for my first diesel. Problem is I'm no loyalist and have liked most American diesel trucks. Its between a bulletproofed f250, and a ram with the 5.9.
    Then I drove a clean Chevy with the lb7 and liked it allot too. Smh.

    When you mentioned getting the heads machined to make sure they’re level, it reminded me of doing the exhaust manifold gaskets and bolts on my 5.7 hemi. Apparently, warped manifolds are the reason why the gaskets pop in the first place, so if you just replace the gaskets without getting the manifolds sanded, they probably won’t last long, even with the new style gaskets. A case of a little money well spent.

    My young little cousin bought a beautiful Duramax crew cab, aluminum rims, good tires, no dents or scratches, for 650 dollars. We put head gaskets on, been running fine ever since.

    I would recommend a LBZ 2006 or early 2007. Last year pre emissions and very reliable if maintained properly.

      I prefer the lb7. Lol. I can deal with the injectors. Simple wastegate turbo, so no vgt to get hung, no egr, insane fuel mileage with the right tuning. I have an lb7, and an lly at current, and have had and driven lots of Lbz and lmm trucks. Throttle response with the vgt is better, and the 6 speed is nice on the lbz and lmm trucks, but my old lb7 has plenty of get up and gets 25-26 mpg. My favorite one.

    I have own my 2003 Duramax for 17 years, yes I have put injectors in it. It took me 2 day and I am not a real mechanic, it was a lot of stuff to remove. It has been 2 years now and no problem with it.

    We had 3 at work in Northern Ontario all Crewcabs 2 were older I think 04 and the other one was newer around 08. The typical GM truck problems aside, the Duramax worked very well in all 3. The drivers beat the piss out of them and they hauled a lot of gear in the beds. Big portable Miller diesel welder + medium job box full of gear and other various tools and they were pulling a tandem axle flatbed or dump trailer often. The older ones made it to 400 000 kms no injector problems or head gasket problems or any other problems with the Engine, Lift pumps went on them at about 250 000- 300 000 kms. They did not Like to be started in -35C but would start if you had 2 good batteries and fuel conditioner. The newer one 2008 had about 330 000kms on it too and it did really well. It pulled harder than the older ones and had the Allison, that one surprised me it felt like a 80 000kms truck at 330 000kms it still had a tight suspension and steering etc.. very little problems overall but had some leaks around transfer case and axles, It was better built than the older ones. The problem was if you had to change a hose, tensioner or something their was very little room to work on the engine. The engineer should be shot that put that filter/primer where it is you have to pull the dam inner fender skirt on the pass side to get to it if someone runs the thing dry, which happend once in a while because we never fixed the gauge clusters on the 04's.

    Thanks for the video. I own a 2002 Duramax with 169k and I took the tuner out of it just last year. Still hasn't had head gaskets but after seeing this video I might go ahead and replace next time I do injectors. But I have to say I have never returned a "head job"!!! lol. @3:45! Good video and I got a good laugh too!

    Pop the front clip as a modular unit, sweep the AC condenser upward and out of the way (no need to break the seal, it has a pivot fitting, Unplug harnesses, pull heater hoses at the firewall and radiator hoses at engine and water pump, undo and cap transmission oil cooling lines, remove a few fasteners behind the fenders at the cab in front of and below the forward door jamb, grab two pairs of gloves and a buddy, this half an hour to an hour makes it so easy to access just about everything on the Engine

    Had an 01 that I bought with 150K miles on it... I had the injectors and head gasket replaced and had studs put in. I thought I should be set for 100K miles... but 3 injectors already went bad by 200K. Decided I had put enough money in that truck and went back to gas.

    Thanks for doing this video. You nailed these engines. I've had my '02 since new, and resisted the tuners, done the maintenance and had zero issues. You're the first person I've heard that admits it stresses these older LB7 engines though. My engine developes a resonance when under load at a specific higher RPMs that I think develops between fuel squirts and the speed of the pistons maybe???? Perhaps the move to the faster injection computer (was it 8 to 16 bit?) solved the issue but its a rattle sound that has always worried me. Made me think , No, I don't want to add any more stress to this system.

    Owning a diesel is a totally different machine than a gas engine. I've always stayed away from owning one because I don't feel I have enough knowledge about them. Love driving them tho. From what I've learned while operating them in various machines over the years that if you do the required maintenance on a diesel it will last for ever. And you can tell pretty quickly when a diesel hasn't had that attention in it's life.

    ran like that for 1.3 million miles
    .
    now he has it at 750 (50hp under stock)
    due to the liner pockets starting to "wallow" out

      jdog942 powerstroke was always computerized. The 6.9 and 7.3 were mechanical. The 6.9 idi and 5.9 cummins were the best.

    Thanks good we bought the 8.1L gas option for $1k vs the $10k 6.6L in 2001... never needs head gaskets never need injectors replaced just cleaned.

    makes me happy i have a 6.0L powerstroke i got ontop of my motor like a total of 4 plugs only 2 are the same but they're on two diffrent sides of the engine and apart of one large wiring harness not counting my injector wiring harness.

    Love the channel. I did an lb7 turbo several years ago. I would rather have my ass beat than do that again. Those up pipe bolts are tough. Good thing you didnt have to pull it.

    that gunk in the injector is from the high pressure line. if u look around the high pressure line fitting dirt and debris gets trapped in there overtime, so when your taking hp line off it falls into injector

    Good to see changing the head gasket is possible without pulling the engine or lifting the cab. I'm planning to get an LBZ Duramax eventually and i've heard the headgasket can be an issue because of the exhaust routing choice.

    I got dmax myself but not going to lie them 12v are so much easier looking to work on. That customer has spent ton on this truck with all issues. Knock on wood mines always been good but I also dont run tuner and it's all stock.

    I have been thinking of making a offer on one thats been sitting, 2002 1 ton dually, 170k km, been sitting for 3 maybe 4 years, needs 4 new tires, and the frame is solid but needs cleaned up, and just a little bit of work and tlc, otherwise seems in very good shape, has had injectors already done too, any suggestions? I don’t really have a purpose for one of these but it would be a dream truck i live in the salt belt i wouldnt plan to drive it in the salt, and just overall preserve and enjoy it,

    In our part of the world the local shop pulls the cab off to get the head gaskets changed. . I thought they were crazy but it seems to work for them.

    also if its blowing coolant out the passanger side fender check the aluminum tube that's bolted to the top of the valve cover it cracks down by the dipstick

    I like the video & you seem knowledgable on the Duramax. Why don't mechanics spray off the engine bay when doing a job of this magnitude. Are you not afraid of dust falling down into the internals of the engine while working on it???

    Couldnt you put a turbo blanket on it and exhaust wrap? I believe it could prevent head gasket failure and keep the engine cooler.

    all that dirt in the injector inlet didn't come through the fuel system. what happened is those long injector line nuts that stick through the valve covers fill with dirt then when you loosen it it all falls into the injector inleta

    did upgrade on my lb7 and was told not to resurface the heads because it changes the compression got 2 new heads from machine shop pros ready to rock and went with victor reinz wave stopper gaskets and arp stud bolts

    I drove a 2003 Chevrolet C5500 19,500 lb GVW boxtruck for a few years for my job. Hated it. Everytime I got back from a run, it needed something major done to it. Must have went through a half dozen sets of injectors, rear main seal blew out once, blew head gaskets twice, transmission wiring harness got corroded and screwed with the transmission for a while, but the transmission itself never had any problems even after we finally killed the truck with fire after 400k miles.

    I am looking to buy another lb7 duramax and during the test drive the low coolant warning came on but no smoke or funny stuff with the oil and coolant in the tank the truck was sitting for half a year so is the headgasket blown or is it just from how long it was sitting because none of the symptoms really showed from what I could tell

    Great video. In mentioning the common problem with the passenger side exhaust causing head gasket problems. What would you recommend to prevent the excessive heat on a stock rig?

      Its so tight, there is nothing really to do. Either hit the firewall or hit the cylinder head. Put in a Pyrometer and keep your EGT's low

    Have you ever ran into an LB7 injector wiring harness. Ive read that the harness will rub and eventually open circuit which then the ficm or ecm shuts down the remaining 3 cylinders of that module. Do you have any insight. I am getting this problem in my LB7 but only after then engine is warm.Doing a real good informative job in your videos. Will definitely watch your videos again if my case ends up being bad injectors.
    Maybe if you have seen this before you can make a video for us all to learn!

    Not looking forward to spending the $$$$ on injectors at some point.

    So, an older truck that needed twenty hours of flat rate labor, needed all new injectors, heads rebuilt, I would guess it cost somewhere around five thousand dollars to repair? Maybe $3500 or a bit above. I own a 1997 chevy 6.5l with some improvements to make it run right, but it appears unlike from when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's, that diesel powered trucks are the perview of the rich since the early 2000's, like Ferraris and Corvettes have been. I was trained as a mechanic and tried working as such even after diesel work in the Army decades ago, so if I had enough money, a shop on the side of the home, and a complete electronics diagnostics package, this sort of repairs is just tedious, I mean, I could have done it for a living if I would have been allowed.

    what is your thoughts on a 4bt cummins or 3.9 Mitsubishi diesel its counterpart.. what I've been told is the Mits. Is sleeved and you can basically rebuild the bottom side at home.. looking to build a jeep for daily driver and good mileage..

    I have several LB7's and even on my money pit truck (race truck) that build up on the injector feed goes through the diesel filter. I had injectors done at 140K, at 188K I noticed haze at idle and was finding diesel in the oil. I figured that I was ripped off the first time( on injector install) so I decided to do the injectors myself, did the research, bought all 8 NEW injectors from duramax store, new injector lines, all o-rings and converted the Fuel filter to a CAT 1807 and cleaned the fuel rails and all high pressure lines. Got it all together and it ran great until about 208K when i noticed soot in the coolant overflow, head gaskets were leaking. Took it apart again to do the head gaskets and that crap was on top of the injectors again. I went full retard on the motor (wagler cam, bigger nozzles, bigger turbo, bigger cp3, arp studs, wagler hi pressure oil pump, and a fluid damper harmonic balancer) before I started it, I drilled the fuel tank for a sump kit and 20 years of crap was slushing around in the bottom of the tank because the factory fuel pump is a pick up style and never draws from the bottom. I installed a fass lift pump with fuel filter and a water seperater. Now the fuel tank is kept clean and with redundant fuel filters and it draws fuel from the lowest point in the tank, the injectors stay clean now and the truck is fast as hell too.
