    Thank you so much for this video! I removed the bolt on the carbonator bowl, looked through the side holes, and it looked fine. I decided to run a straightened plastic coated paper clip through the hole and a little bit of crud came out despite looking good. I then sprayed carb cleaner in the top hole followed by WD40. Put everything back together, primed, it started and stayed running. Woohoo! Thanks again!

    My friend. I just watched your video. And removed the bolt. Cleaned it, and put it back. Bam!! She purrs like new!! I ran it for 15 minutes 😊. Typically I’d be at Home Depot buying a new one. Mine is 20 years old. Never cleaned before. Thanks again for your tips. My wife thanks you too!!!!

    Thats what I was looking for, an easy diagnosis procedure for these particular symptoms. I started it, kept pumping the primer button, and it kept going after about 15 seconds. It's running enough to finish but surging, so I think I have to pull the carb bowl before mowing anything major. THANKS

    That is a terrific video...you hit all the details in an understandable fashion. I could run the wire through the side holes but not the top hole...not sure what to use to open up that top hole....the wire won't push through. Squirted WD-40 through side holes and some did flow out from the top but did not fully open.

    My self-propelled push mower would start briefly and die. I changed the oil (needed it anyway), air filter was fairly new, put in new spark plug, poured out the gas and put in fresh, etc... I was getting disgusted with it, sweating, covered in mosquito spray, hot (Texas) and about to give up. THEN, I watched this video. This mower has taught me plenty, but I was leery about attempting. The way you walked through it gave me the confidence to give it a shot, nothing to lose, right? I gathered up tools I thought might do it, had to improvise with a tiny clamp that belonged to my dad, etc... Anyway, I took it apart, it didn't look too bad, not gummy, but there was approx 5 tiny specks in the bowl, wasn't sure if it fell in on removal actually, put some wire thru the tiny holes, sprayed with the WD40, all that you showed. I put it all back and my hopes were not high. I started it, it died, I started it again, AND it DIDN'T die!!!!!!! I was delighted, woo hoo! I couldn't believe it actually worked. Thank you so much for your great video and how you keep it simple for greenhorns like me. Thank you, thank you, thank you, sir!!!!

    with that air filter ,light test it hold it up to the sun if you cant see thru it replace it . its only a 7-9$ filter.
    i recommend using a torch tip cleaner from harbor freight to clean your fuel metering bolts ,since a lot of oxidation wont be remove with a wire that isn't almost the same size as the metering hole.

    SIMPLEST FIX: No need to remove carburetor, just put carburetor cleaner in the tank. Details below.
    My mower sat for 18 months with 1/2 full tank (does have fuel stabilizer in it). Symptoms were same as yours except my motor wouldn't start at all until I got some starting fluid. My fix was to top off the tank with fresh fuel and add "Fuel Injector & Carburetor Cleaner" from Walmart (Supertech, 6oz treats 21 gallons). I estimate I used about 3-4 times more than you're supposed to. After adding the carb cleaner, I started the motor several times with starting fluid but no improvement. I let it sit for 24 hours and the next day, with the help of some starting fluid (ether), it cranked up and ran without stopping. I did manually push the throttle open to get the rpms up until it got warm.
    You may not be so lucky, but its worth a try. I have a Briggs&Stratton 500E.
    UPDATE: As it turns out, I have a SECOND lawn mower that also would NOT start after sitting. This time it was not so easy. I tried the "Carb Cleaner in the old fuel" trick for several days. I ended up having to lean the mower over and dump out the old fuel completely. With a completely empty tank, I put in the Walmart Carb Cleaner and FRESH FUEL JUST PURCHASED into the tank. Again, I had to let it sit over night, but with the help of the Starting Fluid (Ether) and pushing the red primer button a bunch of times, I got it going. That's TWO times I fixed this problem without removing the Carburetor. Takes a little more time, but removing the carb is no fun.

    When you have the bowl off, be sure to observe whether there is any water droplets in the bottom, mixed in with the gas. This moisture will also prevent the engine from running properly.

      If you did exactly as shown in this video, and you still have a problem, then you may have too much air entering the carburetor, and not enough fuel. Try restricting some of the airflow by adding a small rag in front of the air filter. Last resort, try another carburetor.

    Does concern me that so many people work on small engines without first removing the spark plug wire...

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I only remove the plug wire if I need to work near the blade. The engine cannot start up unless the handle is pulled down and the crankshaft is rotated. Thanks for watching

    What if you don't have a primer bulb like on my Toro

  • @claibst
    @claibst 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I replaced the entire carburetor, removed cleaned the fly wheel and it still stalls after about five minutes of running. Then it will start for a few seconds and cut off. Also replaced the armature and it makes no difference. What is causing it to stall?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 things. The first, and more likely, a faulty magneto(coil). When it heats up it can fail. The second, a crack in the intake manifold. When the engine is cold, the crack is tight, but when the engine becomes hot, the crack opens up allowing air to be sucked in. Thanks for watching!

    If briggs & stratton could have made there engins from cow shite, I quite believe they would have. If you want a mower that lasts make sure the afore mentioned pair have nothing to do with it.

    The bulb trick worked and kept my mower from stalling, but unfortunately I have already cleaned out that bolt holes... What else could it be?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      josh maples I suggest you inspect those holes again. I never had one not work after cleaning them out. It is also possible that there are worn/cracked seals on the metering valve in the carb. Take the carb apart if pressing the button keeps it running. I'd bet those holes are still blocked.

      I went through these steps this morning and problem didn't go away. When I removed the "bowl" there is a gasket around the lip of the bowl that looks pretty worn but is still in place. Could that be the issue if it is worn enough and not creating a tight enough seal?

  • @GeorgiaRidgerunner
    @GeorgiaRidgerunner 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    first of all ive been a small engine mechanic 14 years ...if your mower starts but stalls first you should blowout your air filter using compressed air if this doesnt remedy your problem then one should check the spark plug for fouling clean the plug and reinstall attempt to start engine if problem persists remove fuel tank clean fuel tank by partially filling with water slosh water around do this several times partially fill tank again with clean water look at water draining through hose if it looks slow one should blow backwards through fuel hose using compressed air (3lbs. max.)or one may blow with breath either will sufficiently clean the internal fuel screen now one should insert a shop rag into tank to dry up any residual droplets of water in the tank now one should reinstall tank and recinnect fuel hose and refill with fresh gas from a clean gas can if stalling persists remove air filter again followed by remaining air filter assembly then remove entire carburetor remove bowl using a small piece of wire (i use bread ties with the plastic burnt off) now insert wire into holes on the brass jet screw ensuring theyre clear now use same wire in all visible holes on carburetor now spray out jet screw then spray all holes in carburetor ( being very sure to hold carburetor at arms length and away from face) note sometimes one will need to replace the bowl gasket (with one shaped exactly the same as one being replaced) and also the primer gasket almost always gets damaged and must be replaced with one that is shaped exactly the same as the damaged one reinstall assembled carburetor followed by air filter housing and air filter attempt to start... if problem persists leave me a comment here for assistance.........

      If you do see the this a reply would be much appreciated. I have done everything mentioned including a full carb/tank/lines removal and cleaning and still it runs for 1-2 seconds and dies. My mower doesnt have a primer and is auto choke. Im thinking it has to be something with the choke? Its a troybuilt 550 ex.

      Check the compression. Replace the carb. because they clog up. Check the filter. The head gasket can leak. Tighten the bolts. The muffler may be clogged. The kill switch may be acting up. Check for good spark. Check for air leaks at the intake manifold.
