  • Australian scientists from the University of NSW have set a new world record for the efficiency of commercially-viable solar cells.
    Dr Graham Phillips investigates new technology that is able to convert more than 40 per cent of the sun's light into electricity. This is more than double the efficiency of today's domestic rooftop solar panels, and could eventually lead to cheaper sources of renewable energy. #ABCcatalyst

    use the heat from cooling the efficent cells to drive a steam turbin that also produce electrisity?

      While you are at it, you might as well go back to steam train's and nuclear energy.... We need to go forward, not backwards.....

      @@PeterMilanovski Gravity have never gone of fashion,old as earth. steam used implemented with the tech we have today. If you think that the bat tech and led bulbs are good for nature,then you dont know what u are talking about. A led bulb of ok quality, in the socket there is a pcb with a step down/like a smartphone charger with low quality electrolytic capasitor that make them fail. Way way more garbage. and do you buy a no brand led bulb u hav bought garbage straight from factory. Another fail point is eaach led is driven to hard with to little heatsink to hold make them last. Goes for Lcd Led tv,s everything with ledarray behind a display.

      @@leohobbleohobb3781 gravity is the reason why the universe is as it is....
      Steam is an old technology which we should be long past by now....
      Most LED light bulbs use a capacitor dropper which will fail.... Possibly due to passing too much current, maybe two capacitors in parallel with resistors across both to help share the current across the capacitors will help them live longer? I'm sure that you know about the Dubai LED lights and how they last twice as long....
      This, off course can be fixed by good research and development to achieve a product that will last! But no one seems to want to!
      We should be pushing for new technologies instead of saying things like nuclear energy and steam technology and so on....

    Any poisonous byproducts of the manufacturer of these expensive cells? That’s gotta be a big drawback.

    If one cell generates about 3000 watts, how much of that is lost to the cooling system?

    • @stevetobias4890
      @stevetobias4890 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how it's cooled and what the energy requirements are.

    Historic in magnitude and paradigm shifting in a great positive way. Thanks for this great video and to all those in Australia! After 4 years I hope too it can be augmented in sync should there be yet more innovations.

    I have seen this solar mirror array. Only from outside the fence however. It is extremely impressive. I could say where but I will respect the researchers.

    7:17 How can the small solar panel produce ten times the amount of energy of a conventional solar panel if the conventional solar panel is harvesting 15 to 20 percent of the sun's radiation? If this claim was true the small solar panel would be harvesting between 150 to 200 per cent of the sun's radiation which is mathematically impossible.

    so we get rid of the big solar panel's, and replace them with giant mirrors? ya, no.. How much petroleum was used to mine the gallium arsenide? Regular cells use large quantities of petroleum to be mined, as it is.
