In Defense of 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

  • Rachel Zegler and Peter Dinklage have both made some comments in regard to the original 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that are inaccurate. I wanted to help clear the air by going through their comments one by one and defending the story and beauty of the original. And just to make sure my memory served me right, I re-watched the animated film so it would be fresh in my mind while making this video.
This is the longest video essay I have done to date, and I way underestimated how long it would take me at first. Now that I have a bit more experience doing these, I will hopefully get faster at putting them out for you all.
Also, sorry if I sound weird a few times throughout or have a couple pauses, I had this sore right on my tongue that made me have a slight lisp for a few days.
We have a podcast called Missed Opportunities! We talk about movies and entertainment, sometimes we have guests join us, it's fun. It can be found on Spotify, Apple podcast, and more. We are in the process of moving it over to TH-cam as well, so keep an eye out for that :)

@SkylarThompson-mu1qs In many cultures, it is very common for you to give a goodbye kiss or hug or other form of affection to say goodbye while they are in their coffin. He wasn't trying to make out with her, it was seen as a way for him to say goodbye to the woman he loved because he thought she was dead. He bows down next to her coffin right after, showing respect and grief. Also, if the only way to wake you up from the sleeping death was for your one true love to give you a brief peck on the lips otherwise you stay in a coma forever, I think most of us would want our love to wake us up 😋

The thing is, the prince and Snow white were basically already a couple...
It was only because of the queen that they weren't allowed to be together.
So it's not like he kissed a total stranger. And it's okay to kiss your secret lover as a goodbye, and even if she was just asleep.

    Well done.
Also can we just take a moment to address something? The whole "the prince can't save the woman" thing - which is really a "the MAN can't save a woman" thing - is not only absurd but DANGEROUS. Reason being, what it teaches young boys is that they'd better not come to a girl's aid if she's in trouble, better not defend her, better not stand up for her otherwise they're "in the way" and being "problematic" - they're taught - programmed, really - to think that women don't want or need their help - so when something DOES happen, what then? When a woman DOES need a man to stand up for her and defend her - because the reality is, in real life, women are physically on average smaller and weaker than men - the average woman is 5'4", the average man 5'9", with the average man being at least twice her physical strength due to having naturally bigger, stronger muscles, particularly in the upper body. That's not to insult women - that's human biology. That's how our species - like MOST species that have distinct genders - evolved because we SELECTED for males that were on average bigger and stronger and had those masculine traits so that they could hunt mammoths, defend the tribe from other tribes and so on. The women HAD to be protected for most of human history because we didn't live in cities but in caves and huts - and the only way to get a next generation, then as now, was for the women to bear children - which means that for at least 9 months plus the time they spend feeding and caring for the baby, women were in an especially VULNERABLE state - vulnerable to predators, to rival clans, but especially the BABY was vulnerable - and she carried the baby inside of her.
So it's only natural for men to be pre-programmed with a natural INSTINCT to protect and "save" women. It's been our job for 300,000 years since our species evolved into being, and for MILLIONS of years if you include human ancestors. All primates have larger males than females - and in almost all cases the job of the male is to defend the females from outsiders and predators. So WHY, then, is it suddenly "WRONG" or "BACKWARD" for a man to - gasp - act on millions of years of gut instinct and protect someone who IS physically less powerful and might - GASP - need his help?
I'm not saying women can't defend themselves or be leaders or anything like that. Certainly, living in modern societies and cities has changed things a bit - though not entirely. Women still carry the next generation in their wombs and their physiology is different because of it. Women are still smaller and less physically strong than men on AVERAGE - note, average - and women, unlike we men, cannot just go walk around in a dark street at 1AM without worrying about being raped and murdered by a much bigger, stronger assailant. I'm 6'2", 210 lbs and have a good amount of muscle - so I'm a VERY different target from my wife, who is 5'4" and cannot lift with both arms what I can pretty easily with ONE. The fact is, our experiences are not the same because of that. I don't have to worry about the things she has to worry about. I have to worry about HER if I'm not there and she's taking the dog out at night, and I do. Because you never know what kind of creeps are out there.
So again, why is it suddenly wrong for a man to save a woman? It doesn't in any way mean the woman is a lesser being - if anything, men save women because women are held ABOVE men in worth - we SACRIFICE our safety and well-being to defend them. Think about that. A man who doesn't HAVE to is throwing himself between a woman and a source of danger that could get himself killed - why does he do that? CLEARLY it's because he places more value on HER life than his own. That's how this works. I would take a bullet for my wife, or step between her and an angry bear - not because I think my size and strength make me "better" than her or a "better leader" or because I don't respect her but because to me, it's better that I am killed than her. Because her life in my eyes holds more value than my own. That's WHY men save women.
So think about that the next time you hear someone complain about a "damsel in distress being saved by a man" - why is the man WILLING to save her? Surely he doesn't have to put himself in danger. He could just pretend he saw nothing, go home and have a cold drink and read a book and say it's someone else's problem. Also, when a man saves another man who is less physically capable, nobody complains. It's logical. People CHEER when some young guy is being bullied and then the big guy in class stands up to the bully for him. People LOVE that. But if it's a girl just let HER handle it? That's not realistic.

    • @yourlittlesistersproductions
      @yourlittlesistersproductions  ปีที่แล้ว +41

I honestly don't get why people get so worked up over people helping others when the one helping is a man and the one needing the help is a woman. Just like you said, if a little guy is being picked on and a bigger guy comes along and helps, everyone cheers. Same with a woman helping a woman. We all need help sometimes, and we can all help somebody else sometimes. It doesn't make either person less than the other. Thank you for your comment!

    • @hameley12
      @hameley12 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@kalevipoeg6916 You have explained it much better than most commentators. Thank you. Also, as a young girl I was always or even sometimes bullied by my peers. My best friend Dan would always escalate the situation and bring me somewhere safe. Years later in college, my boyfriend at some point also helped me and I appreciated his advice, presence and knowing he could fight smartly with fists, and the right words. Nowadays, you don't need a weapon (in some circumstances) to defend or protect yourself and your girlfriend/wife/best friend/sibling,etc, you just need to know how to de-escalate some difficult situations that you come across. This is something I've learned as a skill too, in case my boyfriend isn't around.
You are definitely right. This wrongness of a "Snow White " movie is a dangerous message. I hope most of the population is smart enough to not go and see it with their kids or themselves at all. Young boys and girls should be taught the right skills to survive in this fast-paced, thriving world with good people and corrupt people.

I think it's also just the general 'it's okay when WE do it" disposition. We get constant role reversal spamming modern works, taking all these roles that are considered 'sexist' and switching them around. It's okay if the female saves the boy, in fact it's okay if they do it in a way that openly demeans them and makes them look incompetent, which was the main beef they had with it done the other way round. There's this constant 'underdog syndrome' to it all, that it feels less like a representation thing and more just a disposition similar to a little sibling who just always thinks they get the short end and should be allowed to win and get all the best stuff. When they play unfair they're just evening the odds.

While I doubt I‘ll be influenced by Disney films at this stage of my life, the message to boys and young men seems to be that they not only shouldn‘t help and support women, they should avoid them completely because their input and their very presence aren’t welcome. That‘s no longer feminism but rather a call for separation and even segregation.

By the way, surviving that kind of abuse takes unbelievable strength in the first place. You have no idea how bad it truly is unless you have survived it yourself. This is the same reason why the DuckTales reboot rubbed me the wrong way (aside from the kids just being outright obnoxious in it). All of the female characters are trying so hard to be stereotypically male in it. I always loved the family chemistry of the characters in the original, even with the unrelated characters. Webby, for instance, was treated like a little sister to the boys and there was a fun playful atmosphere of kids being kids. They annoyed each other, but they also cared for and looked out for each other. Webby was a sweet little girl who just wanted to be part of the adventures and managed to get the gang out of scrapes through her own fun ways. Then I watched the new series and saw her room where she had a plush doll nailed to the wall with a knife. It was just so needlessly cruel and mean spirited. It made me sad. It basically said "not only is femininity unwelcome here, but it deserves to be killed." What an ugly message to convey through what was once a sweet character.

I think it's fine for the Prince to "save" Snow White. I think what Rachel objects to is that she WANTS the Prince to save her, not that she wants to save herself. "Some Day My Prince Will Come" is what Rachel remembers. But here's the thing, that's at the beginning of the movie, when she's trapped and helpless. When the Hunter basically sets her free, it's Snow White saving herself all the way. She gets help from the Dwarfs, but it's more of a friendship not a "manly courage" thing. Snow White wins their hearts by taking care of them, and in return they want to take care of her. It's mutual. Also, let's also remember that Snow White never belittles them, thinks they are weird because of their shortness, or anything like that... in 1937. They don't paint the Dwarfs as jokes, even if they are comedy characters. You're laughing with them, not at them. So yeah, the movie can be dated... but because it's basically an elongated Merry Melodies cartoon with barely a story. It's not dated for it's messages.

If Walt had not taken the chances he had during the early years of Disney, we would've not have the advancement of traditional animation taken seriously as art in film. When Zegler reduces the significance of Snow White as just a mere "cartoon", shows how shallow and narrow minded she is.

Years later we got to see the early 1990s and early 2000s Disney-related movies. They still had complex characters, fun adventures, and yet a dosage of innocence/reality added as a bonus by the artists. I will never forget the intro to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, and later the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis The Lost Empire.

    1. They have excessive pride and vanity. They love themselves too much, so there is no room for anyone else in their lives.
    2. They love power too much. They would rather be able to control everyone and everything around them with absolute authority.

Here's the problem: More than 15 years ago Disney made the decision to go live action on its animations. Cinderella was the first and probably the most successful. But they set themselves up with an ambitious schedule that was totally unrealistic. They left most of the decision making in the hands of the directors and really did not provide a lot of the oversight they should have for such expensive projects. At the end of a project, if Disney didn't think it would be successful at the box office, they sent it straight to video and to Disney Plus. If you throw money at any project and do not provide enough oversight, the result will be uneven. And you will waste a lot of money because no one is saying "Let's take a hard look at this." And so the director of Snow White began spending. Most scenes where shot with multiple variations so that he could make his mind up as he edited as to which version he was going to use. Instead of sticking to a plot, this was the equivalent of shooting that movie five times! You wonder where the money went? And every single time a sticky point came up, he caved. He caved when Rachel Zegler refused to take direction in her scenes, particularly those with Andrew Burnap. He caved when the lead dwarf criticized the employment of dwarves in the movie. Instead they became magical woodland creatures. He caved when Gal Gadot presented performances that were subpar. It was not only the wrong two actresses that were poorly cast, but the wrong director. And so three years and $200 million dollars later, Disney has a completely unsatisfactory project and has cancelled planned "universe" films that would have been sequels to this one. If Disney had been watching the farm, the director would have received guidance as soon as the nonsense started. Now the dwarves will still be dwarves, but they will be CGIs instead of real people, adding to the expense of the film. It's a whole lot harder to get the product you want in editing than in shooting it the way you want it in the first place. If Rachel had been fired when she balked at taking direction, Gal Gadot would have gotten in line quickly. However, the two actresses have become very used to doing exactly what they want to do because Disney has deep pockets. Rachel has complained that it is her film and therefore having a prince takes the focus from her. And they didn't even put her dancing and singing in the trailers. And she had to wear a dress for 12-18 hours at a time!! What a travesty! She thinks she should be paid extra for that! Gal Gadot complained that they put clips in of her acting in the trailer that reflected poor acting. Did she think they were going to spend millions of dollars on re-recording those clips? After what Disney paid her, why wasn't the acting superb all the time? So Disney needs policy that requires the directors to regularly justify their expenditures to Disney execs rather than letting the shenanigans go on for three years and $200 million. This project was supposed to be out in March. Recent rumors indicate that there is so much to fix, it won't be March. And now we are ready for the next part of the saga.

Big original "Snow White" fan. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first full-color feature-length film ever to hit the theaters. Maturing is realizing that Snow White was actually a great Disney Princess in the first place, and here's why.
Yes, Sometimes I do think that Snow White really shouldn't have fallen for that magic apple trick, but I do understand why. She's grown up in the castle for most of her life, and the Evil Queen abused her in every way she could.
But the thing I love most about Snow White is her kindness. She was kind to everyone she met, like the animals in the forest, because after she had her hallucinations while running through the forest, she apologized to them for being afraid, which was something she didn't even have to do. And that whole "With a Smile and a Song" sequence was so wholesome to watch because I love Snow White's presence and comforting nature towards the animals. It just brings a huge smile on my face.
And when she sees the dwarfs' cottage dirty, she decides to clean it so they can live in a nice environment, and that maybe they'll let her stay in the cottage, because things don't come for free. And when she does meet the Dwarfs, she acts like a motherly figure towards them so they can be healthier and better people, and I love that. Snow White is even like the type of person who would comfort me every time I'm in a stressful situation.
Heck, I even loved the way Snow White helped the disguised old lady into her house and gave her water because she has such a good heart.
As someone who wants to be kind myself, I absolutely despise the fact that kindness, optimism, and nurturing is considered as weakness. Because people assume that only arrogance, anger, and physical strength is considered true strength.
Yes, Snow White is not exactly my favorite Disney Princess, but what I really love about her is her true strength, and her true strength is her kindness and optimism, because if it weren't for her kindness and comforting nature towards the prince, the animals, and the dwarfs, she would have never found a place to stay, Grumpy would have never had a change of heart, she would have been buried alive, and that would have ended her chances of waking up from her sleeping death slumber. She was strong mentally and emotionally, and that's amazing.
Yes, the movie is not my favorite animated movie, but I do have a lot of respect for it because without it, animated movies wouldn't be what they are today, and another reason why I have a lot of respect for the film is because of Snow White herself. So I'm really glad I grew up with the film as a little girl *(even though I did think it was a bit scary at some points)*
I wish I played Snow White because I try to stay kind to everyone I meet, I'm optimistic, I'm sensitive, I have a soprano voice when it comes to singing, and I do love apples very much.

I can understand Rachel's statements being scared by the original film and ride.
But like you mentioned, its her opinion and she shouldn't turn all kids or families away because the movie or original ride Frightened her.
The original movie has scary moments for sure, but its a beautiful piece of animation that absolutely holds up. As for her comments on making Snow white more 'updated' and a leader. There have been several Snow white adaptations showcasing her as a leader while also being compassionate.
The most notable coming from Disney was the Snow white in Once upon a time. She fell in love with a prince, but she wasn't a so called 'Damsel' she was a survivor and a warrior.

In the original animated film, Snow White demonstrated her quality as a future Queen by being brave in her own way, as well as being kind, firm, selfless, steadfast, responsible, gracious, and optimistic given her harsh upbringing. If she lacked those qualities, what would make us root for her to survive and achieve her happily ever after?
I find it hard to imagine Mz Zegler being able to nail just one of those aspects, nevermind all of them. The way it comes across in interviews (and likely in the movie itself) is that Zegler is playing a power fantasy self-insert version of herself. Her character "dreams" about coming into a position of leadership and is singly motivated by that. I'm reminded of what author Douglas Adams said about those who crave power:
"Those people who seek to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it."

The Peter Pan ride scared the crap out of me as a kid. I feared falling out of the ship as it flew over a miniature version of London, and that because it's Disneyland and Disney has magic I would become small and have to live in a fake miniature city with no food but fake food and I'd have to sleep on a plastic bed. It took a long time to get over that fear, but it never made me hate the Peter Pan animated movie. In fact, I bought the sequel and even watched the non-Disney series on TV. Eventually I became a big fan of the Tinker Bell/Disney's Fairies franchise.
Snow White is one of my favorite princesses because she is so pure, sweet, kind, and a hard worker. She loves animals and likes to bake. Something I can not only admire, but relate to. Despite all the scary stuff that she went through, she still kept going and rose above her circumstances with a happy heart. Again, something to admire.
Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I never liked how Snow White was portrayed in Once Upon a Time because they changed her sweet, innocent personality and made her into a 'killer' at one point. This took away from what she originally represented. There are other princesses that can represent a strong woman. Merida for the best example. Jasmine as well, she inspired me to think for myself and not let others tell me how to live my life. Snow White is meant to represent the pure and innocent, why is that a bad thing?
I used to be a kind of Feminist until I started to see that such women scoffed the 'weaker' girls, turning them into 'damsels in distress'. The whole: "A woman doesn't need a man" kind of thing. There are all kinds of women out there, not all of us are physically strong or want to be leaders. That doesn't make us 'damsels in distress' or 'weak'. I don't want to be a b*ch, I don't care to be a girl boss. I just want to live the best that I can with kindness and understanding.

Ok i found this by a tumblr person called artist issues but it fits so well here.
first off it's obvious that she basically hates snow white and basically said as much. acting like it's bad and not worth anything because it's an 85 year old cartoon. so lets put some things to think about this cartoon.
It was the first cell animated feature length full color film EVER. it invented the modern animated film. Everything that is out now and animated can be tied to this movie in some way shape or form because it was the first.
It was praised, not just for the technical marvels that it produced, not just for the synchronized craft of sound and action, but mostly and enduringly because people felt like the characters were real. they felt more like they were watching something true to life vs the silent live action movies with real people. kids were scared as she fled from the witch, adults grieved with the dwarfs. this was pretty consistent.
also disney was built on this movie. if it failed disney wouldn't be a thing. the studio in burbank was built on the amazing odds defying and record breaking profits of just this one movie.
adjusted for inflation it is the highest grossing animated movie at the box office ever. That is including the modern/current movies not just the old ones.
in fact at the time it came out it made four times as much money as ANY other film that was released and was the highest grossing film of all time in any genre until gone with the wind came out to take the throne.
it was the first animated movie to be selected for the national film registry, heck one of the first movies ever to go into it at all. it is there alongside movies like west side story. you know the movie that was remade that made her famous.
this is less about the movie itself but still worth noting. Disney sacrificed so much for this movie because he believed in it, something these professional creatives seem to have forgotten about doing for stuff they believe in. He morgaged his home and screened the movies to banks for loans to finish paying for it. everyone including his wife and brother told him he was crazy to make the movie, but it has lasted so long and well in 85 years vs her what 8 years in the industry? yeah im sure she knows better. /s
This movie emoplyed over 750 people working so much over time and inventing, literally, so many new techniques that are still used in film making today. This was a large part of why walt, in a move that no other studio was doing at the time, put in the opening credits "my sincere appreciation to the members of my staff whose loyalty and creative endeavor made possible this production. Not the ending credits like so many like to do today as some sort of "see we care" but the opening credits.
this little "85 year old cartoon" sold over a million dvd copies upon re rlease on its first day. the beatles quoted snow white in one of their songs. legacy directors call it the greatest film ever made. everything from the rolling stones to the american film institute call this movie one of the most influential masterpieces of our culture.
The movie doesn't need anything from anyone, It is a cultural gain for america. A staple in film making, and art in general. it was the foundation that disney was built on.
When you think only in the base, low, mean terms of "race" and "progressivism" you start taking things that are actually worlds-away from being in your league to judge, and you relegate them to silly ignorant phrases like "85-year-old cartoon" to explain why what you're doing is somehow better.
She needs to sit down about this because who the heck is she to talk about this movie like that?
And as anamericangirl on tumblr said in a response.
zegler basically says the whole movie is "young woman who doesn't have a function beyond someday my prince will come" shows she never saw the movie or didn't comprehend it.
she was 14, escapes a dangerous and abusive situation and was able to pull herself up by her bootstraps and take care of herself and as a form of rent the seven dwarfs. i mean she actually basically said if i clean up this place maybe they will let me stay here. Sure she dreamed of romance, but that's not a bad thing. young women tend to do that.
Gal gadot saying "oh she's not going to be saved by the prince in this one." are we supposed to be happy about that? I mean thank god we can't have a mand help her out in any way. She was laying there dead and he kissed her and that created the idea of true loves kiss so thank you for getting rid of that.
they can't seem to promote this movie without insulting and belittling the previous one and if they hate it so much why remake it instead of making something new. leave the original alone.
now for me again without other peoples words.
I wasn't planning to see this movie unless people wanted to as a group and even then only if i had nothing better to do. now I won't see it not matter what. Honestly there gets to be a point where these faces of the movie end up damaging the product more than help it. I hope this is another nail in the coffin that disney is finding itself in with all these financial failures this year. And i hope that it pushes Zeglers fame stock so low that she has no more work to do after this is this is how she tries to make people want to see her movie i can't imagine anyone thinking she'd be a good hire.
and as for her rant about "Well if i have to wear this outfit for so long i need money forever from it" type thing she said. that's not a reason. a lot of jobs have uniforms, and they just get the agreed on money. heck disney the theme parks have so many people wearing that same outfit. if that's the only standard for getting the money you better make sure they get theirs. after all they wore it a lot more than you and unlike you they had to always be in character while on the job. you only had to be between action and cut.

I think Rachel Zegler thinks that what she is saying is what people want to hear and see from the remake. idk if it's all her or the marketing team for Disney, but they are obviously wrong that these types of comments are what are going to drive people to the theaters to see this. Especially with them excluding so many actors with dwarfism from what could have been their big break into the industry. Decisions were made, and now they are discovering that they were not the best decisions to make if they want to make their money back.

If I did have one criticism from the original movie, it’s that Prince Florian really wasn’t in it and at several points in the movie, it felt like he really needed it. And it’s clear that the original team knew that given their original plans for him if it were not for the fact that they had trouble animating him and didn’t have the money for more than they already had.
If the live action could have improved on anything, it would have been the character of the Prince and deepening the bond he has with Snow.
But clearly that’s not going to happen.

I wish your video would go viral. It's such a great explanation of the many ways people can be leaders and change the World. You defend the 1937 movie, so well. As you said (basically), when she was with the dwarfs she had no "power". But she had the power to change their lives and environment, which she did in an extremely positive way. Because of her actions, the dwarfs made a glass coffin. She was released from the spell by love's first kiss. The prince fell in love with her beauty, singing, and her kindness in the beginning of the movie. At the end, he wants to show his reverence for her. Yes, it could be a bit weird but only if it was in real life. This is a fairy tale.

So many things I didn't even really think about before, like how, cruel though she was, the Queen was indeed the highest power in the land. And how the dwarves saved her just as much as the Prince, all over which did indeed happen because of her.
The first thing we see Snow White doing is scrubbing the courtyard, and the first thing she does upon arriving at the cottage is to clean the place up, and there's no trace of 'I can't stay in a place so filthy'; she does it as a kind gesture to the dwarves. Which she continues to do; Snow White has agency in her day to day life, and not once do we see her sit back and expect to be waited on hand and foot. Something which I'm sure WILL happen in the remake. She can't possibly help the dwarves (or whatever creatures there are) clean up around the house; she'll be too busy planning the details of her plan to take back her crown. She's not going to care about them at all.

Anyway, what we see here is that Hollywood directors, writers and actors are apparently largely evil, which is why they cannot understand how being a compassionate person will find love and happiness, and how those are timeless values. Maybe these movies are their poison apples

I do think that people who work in Hollywood can become removed from the every day type of person and style of living to the point where they forget what audiences really want to see. It takes effort, once you reach that level of fame and money, to stay connected to the world outside of that sphere. I really thought that Disney, and the rest of Hollywood, would get the message that audiences want good, well told stories by now, but maybe this will be the project to finally do it for them. Thanks for your comment!

Anyone knows that to be a fair and loved leader, you must first learn to serve others and that’s the story of Snow White. I’m sure that Rachel’s version won’t stoop to serve the dwarves, or magical friends or whatever? She misses the entire point of what makes her a good leader, not anything her father told her.
Snow White is not a love story about just her love for the Prince. The Prince is such a small role, that we can’t see the love develop. The real love story is how Snow White learns to love the dwarves and vice versa. She is first frightened by them and being a princess who has been waited on hand and foot would humble herself to clean and cook for these dwarves taught her a lot.
She is a squatter to the dwarves at first. Once they realize she found them escaping the Huntsman and Queen, they welcome her and become protective of her by the end when they chase the witch to the top of the mountain. In the original version the Hintsman has pity on Snow White, unable to destroy something so beautiful, in the new version, Snow White kicks his ass and takes his weapon, turning it on him to force information about the queen’s plans. Yes, this new Mary Sue has a Rocky style training montage and everything. The new Captain Rey Snow Marvel White Skywalker will be her name.
Peter Dinklage doesn’t speak for the entire dwarf community. The only things he proved is that he doesn’t know anything about the story he insulted. None of the dwarves live in a cave. There are no stereotypes in the movie. The dwarves range from the highly intelligent Doc, to the mentally challenged Dopey and all levels in between. One is so cheerful he is named Happy. Even a grumpy one, like Dinklage. Dinklage is not willing to send the elevator back down. A good way to keep your completion down Peter.
It’s an evil way to do it and hopefully many other fans of your’s will be as disenfranchised with you as I have since you opened your big mouth. You’re a great actor and you were brilliant as Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf role. What glass ceiling have you shattered?
It’s not like you were cast for the part of The Mountain or Obyrn Martell? You still played a dwarf and will always be a dwarf, the same way African actors will always get African American parts and Asians will always play Asian parts. We are what we are, so give other dwarves a chance. It’s not Ike the movie had dwarves playing leprechauns or fairies or other fantasy characters. We all know what you were doing. Disney didn’t even check with other dwarves to see if they were offended by the roles. Nope, just Peter.
This reminds me of the huge stink that Fed Ex and other sponsors muscled Washington to change the name of their NFL team Redskins (a name they’ve used for nearly 100 years) because it was offensive to Native Americans without actually talking to the aboriginal people themselves.
It turns out that polls show that 90% of Native Americans do not find the name offensive. In fact, most of them found it lionizing and a tribute to their warrior spirit. That is why a Native American League is now boycotting the team to make them change the name back.
I doubt that will happen because only purple haired white gender-fluid Karens know when a culture is offended, whether it be Blacks, Asians, Jewish, Arabian or Native American. These gender-fluid white women think those races are too stupid to know when they’re being insulted, so they get insulted for them. The problem is, those Karen’s are offended by everything.

She's so disrespectful to a Disney legendary movie my mom went to see as a young girl, got scared of the stepmother and fell in love with the movie. It's a classic, so why would anyone want to make a woke Snow White? And then kind of "joking" to remove the male lead? That sounded... awful. He looks like a very nice young man with good looks. And then not even have 7 dwarfs? Helloooo! Wtf!!! If they do this movie in "that" way, I'm not gonna watch it and I actually once loved Disney until they got woke. What's wrong with falling in love, feeling safe with a strong man and I guess I'm just old-fashioned. I don't mean to offend, but I just don't like this new version of Snow White. I haven’t seen Snow White since I was a child but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten how amazing this film truly is.
It’s a shame it’s being remade without a second thought because some people think it’s outdated but the truth is that it is still a timeless classic it was Walt’s first movie the first step to Disney’s reputation and brand. It’s what founded Disney as a company.
Snow White and the seven Dwarves is still being passed on through generations it will continue to do so, I know if I were to do any babysitting for family members I would allow the kids to watch the original cartoons instead of the remakes. Her ladyship certainly has her own assumptions.
The original 1937 movie of Snow White And The Seven Dwarves (Dwarfs?) was emblematic of an America that was an increasingly gratifying presence in a very uncertain world. The movies said something about America back then. And where else in the world were they, these glamorous, exciting, wonderful, moving movies, being made? Some of them were even now turning up in colour. These classics, if not popular currently, will always be referred to in some shape or form into the future. There will always be a fondness for them.
America is no longer the magical place it had once been. In other words, there is no longer a sense of wonder when it comes to America. It’s lost its mojo, as they would say in the U.K. The movies today say as much. They are all desperately grim. Earlier this year I noticed a row of posters at a railway station in Europe advertising the utterly grim, tight-lipped countenances of the leading Disney acting troupe, for the streaming service I think it was, and I was instantly puzzled by this weird, WEIRD advertising approach. Whatever happened to the beaming optimism of Mary Poppins? Aka Julie Andrews? The desperate newcomers to western shores would think the Americans are fed up with their lot in life and that the movies and shows are all about that. The children waiting on the platform would begin to associate Disney with misery. Commuters would have daily, DAILY, averted their gaze in order to better cheer themselves up ahead of another busy day at work. I concluded that the grim countenances perfectly reflect the new progressive cause in America to do down their own great achievements of the past: our pained expressions, the grim faces seem to say, are to tell you to be guilty too about your country’s past. In Germany, where the vitality of an active old age is much promoted, such that posters showing beaming pensioners showing off their rows of perfectly white teeth are commonplace, these painful Disney ones in my mind would have given a dim view of young Americans abroad.
It’s as if the great labouring effort of Disney in 1937 and of everything else that America had achieved up until the recent past should never have been attempted at all! America should never have bothered. Really?
And what, then, would the world look like today? Disney itself would never have existed.
In 1937, when Stalin’s purges were all the rage in the SU, the animators and producers must have felt as if they were embarking on a moonshot to make Snow White. It was a great achievement. Today’s shenanigans are the equivalent of the “Houston, we have a problem” Apollo 13 disaster. And, VERY EVIDENTLY SO! Still, a good enough movie came out of that Apollo 13 event.
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs; Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid; It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World; The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance; The Way We Were:
even the movie titles themselves had real character back in the day. They are a very bland one word or two now because I think they can be googled more easily and as if the one word or two tells the young cinema-going crowd that their busy, busy social lives are respected and the impression given is that the movie is snappy, and does not linger too long on scenes.
Never has in this our digital age entertainment been so exhausting. Hooray for the olden days! They were not always not great. They had their good points. And I wish the culture executives in America today would be glad for their lot in life. Were their own grandparents more so? Back in the day? Looking at our sniffy rebuke of our own past, it’s very possible.
I’ll finish now by remarking how quickly the fondness for household names has disappeared. Today’s artists and what not, stars, entertainers, they just don’t get talked about the way they used to be talked about. The old stars of yesteryear were very much their own person. As a genuine practitioner of their respective crafts ought to be.
