People forget that this movie is an allegory for getting through the great depression. Like the evil queen symbolizes fear,doubt,and selfishness while Snow-white symbolizes courage, hope and kindness, while the prince is supposed to symbolize the reward of overcoming difficulties.
You can also read the Evil Queen as a metaphor for a massive disruption in the normal functioning of the world (i.e. The Great Depression), with the prince representing the normal. After all, Snow is a princess and princesses marry princes and become queens. Thus the prince doesn't represent a reward so much as the inevitable return of the normal, and the story is about enduring hard times, with its core message being that hard times inevitably end.

I’m a girl and it still baffles me this generation sees Snow White and Cinderella’s femininity and demureness as weak. They’re probably two of the strongest Disney princesses. Snow White and Cinderella were ABUSED. They were emotionally and verbally abused, both of their stepmothers consistently tried to ruin their lives. And yet they remained strong, determined, and faithful until the end. Think about how many Disney princesses actually have abusive parents. Not very many, right? And as someone who grew up in a toxic home environment, that’s beyond inspiring to me. But no because they want love that doesn’t make them feminist. Great video.

Snow White showed a great deal of "Power & Authority" in the original movie. Organizing and delegating the animal to clean the house. Got seven old men that were set in their ways to straighten up and not be slobs. She practically ran that cottage like a captain runs a ship.

Snow White and Cinderella are victims of their circumstance. These people victim blame them for things they could not control. There is this stereotype nowadays that in order for a woman to be strong or a female lead to be strong she has to fight better than the boys and fight everyone, embody more masculine traits, etc. However there is so much strength in femininity and traditional feminine characters like those two. Patience, endurance, forgiveness, nurturing, kindness, resilience, dignity, elegance, class, humility, perseverance, thankfulness, optimism, etc. I mean look at how Snow White is. She’s so strong and my all time favorite Disney Princess growing up. She was abused mentally and physically for years by her stepmom. And when she runs away after the attempt on her life despite realizing she has no family as the only family alive is actively trying to murder her, no friends, no home, no food, etc. instead of whining about it. She apologizes for being afraid and then looks for ways to start over. She dusts herself off like a badass despite being fourteen and says essentially “okay this is my life now. I need to accept it, move on, and then figure out what to do next” and step one was find a shelter! She wanted to care for the dwarves whom she thought were orphans because of how kind and nurturing she was. They bash her for cooking and cleaning, but seriously think of it this way: she’s offering them her skills that she acquired when she was forced into slavery which are cooking and cleaning as a rent payment in exchange for housing. And even then she refused to offer them the fruits of her labor if they didn’t behave themselves as gentleman. Cinderella. They victim blame her like crazy. She is literally abused and in real life when people are abused you don’t judge them for not escaping. What could she have done? Murder her stepmother? Run away and do what, live on the streets alone and penniless? Could she have found employment? I doubt it! When she meets the Grand Duke as well she held the key to her freedom. That shoe! She got herself out. What I love so much about these two is that when such terrors occur in one’s life it’s so easy for one to become bitter and one’s heart to harden. Yet they remain kind and optimistic and sweet! And what’s so wrong with falling in love? What’s so wrong with wanting a handsome prince to sweep you off your feet? What’s so wrong with a man saving them? It doesn’t make them weak!
Thank you for this little essay and whole heartedly agree. It would’ve been easy and understandable for Snow White and Cinderella to turn out bitter given given their circumstances (and basically straight up abuse) and yet they ended up turn out to be a kind and good person regardless. That itself is an admirable strength✨ and you can’t really blame them to want to find or wait for love when you realize they’ve been alone and hadn’t experienced a lot of love beforehand.

One thing that surprised me about Cinderella was that the live action Disney version actually kept the spirit of the original while adding very good modern things to it and they avoided inserting any toxic identity politics. No wonder that film is now regarded as the best live action one among the others.
@@orboakin8074 Yes that remake was amazing because 1) the director and actors obviously enjoyed the original story and were intent on paying homage to it and the original characters 2) they casted actors who looked like and loved their characters 3) they stayed true to the original story and it’s message whilst giving it appropriate and meaningful modern updates that didn’t take away from the original message and improved/built upon the original story: example such as the prince and Cinderella having more romantic scenes and chemistry and the prince having more agency and a personality in the story, Cinderella’s childhood shown, the stepmother giving a backstory whilst still establishing why and that fact she’s evil and her backstory even contrasted Cinderella that while Cinderella has horrors and tragedy occur she didn’t become embittered like the stepmother

The thing that annoys me the most about this remake is the contempt for the original. This was the first full length animated film. The lead actresses should have had nothing but good things to say about the original.
These actresses wouldn't be where they are without the original! So yeah, you're right, they should only have positive things to say about it. I mean, it's not that the original is above criticism, but the time to bring that up is definitely not during interviews about your remake. And their criticism wasn't helpful or accurate anyways.
You know what also gets to me about this? They are mocking something... That these people are INCAPABLE of making themselves. There is no more actual hand drawn animation, it's all computer and even when it looks hand drawn they are using flash programming to sort of cheat code. The way this was done back then, the artistry and work that went into it, the detailing. They are simply unable to do anything like it themselves. At all. they should be in awe. These people are standing on the shoulders of GIANTS that are lifting them up. And they are taking a big steaming dump on that giant. And let's not forget without the giant they would be irrelevant, they would be down on the ground with the rest of us.

What snow white taught me was that you can't expect hand outs. Snow white cleaned and cooked to earn her keep. Hell she did it even though she wasn't guaranteed a place to sleep.

@@MmeCShadow, ironically enough, in the original fairytale, seven-year-old Snow White entered the Seven Dwarfs cottage to find it as neat as a pin, with a white tablecloth and dishes set out with a full, home cooked meal waiting for them, which Snow White ate. They asked her to earn her board and keep by doing housework for them while they were gone, in exchange for giving her a safe place to stay.

It actually takes so so so much strength to SEEK help when you're in a bad situation. To accept help. When you've had a bad upbringing, asking for help or admitting you need it is absolutely terrifying.
You should see the trailer that dropped a few days ago. It’s being ratio to heck and back. There’s a whistle while you work sequence that leaked and it’s getting trashed for good reason. I mean the whole thing is just terrible and Rachel is not Snow White. I’m not even putting looks to the equation which factor you can get that at, but they do factor but even worse than that for me is the fact that she doesn’t act like snow White the personality isn’t there on or off screen and what’s even worse than all of that is that iconic beautiful voice that we all know court of one Adriana Caselotti is not there. Rachel doesn’t even try to replicate that.
It's also important to understand the context in which this movie was made. The original movie was made during the Great Depression, so Snow's attitude of always being cheerful and easygoing, never complaining about her situation but always making the best of it, was meant to be a sort of message of encouragement to all the people watching. Everyone was suffering when this movie came out. There were people crying in the theater when Snow White died. The prince and the ending visual of the castle in the clouds can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Either it's literal, and she goes on to marry the prince and become a princess in his castle, or he's an angel who's come to take her to Heaven. Either way, the ending is meant to signify that all of her struggles are over, and she can live out the rest of her days(or all of time) at rest and at peace.
So SW does die at the end! It makes it even more sadder! She did her best she could under difficult circumstances, treated those around her kindly (even Grumpy), tried to b positive. Depending on what u believe, her reward was much greater than we are lead to believe, eternal life in a heavenly kingdom. That's why when the 7 dwarfs say goodbye to her at the end, they cant come with her. She was resurrected in heavenly form and the Prince/Angel made her visible so they can say goodbye to her!
Snow White just wants to find love and live happily ever after. Part of the reason I cringe at the idea of a girl boss Snow White is because Snow's dreams are simple but not easy. She's isolated, she has a stepmother that wants her dead, and she's forced to hide in the woods. Snow White just wants to be happy, but the villain won't let that happen because she's a threat by existing. Queen could've sent Snow White with the Prince in the beginning, she gets full power and Snow gets away, but because Snow is the fairest she's now competition, heck in early drafts Prince get held hostage because he refuses her.
I have scoliosis and am very small bodied. I'm very emotional and cry the second I'm confronted. I stand no chance in a fight, physical or verbal, against a man or a woman frankly. I've always related more to princesses like the classic three because I'm just a lot more like them. Don't get me wrong I love all of the princesses, I love the ones who are much more characterized and modern too. But I can't relate to them being so passionate and headstrong. That's why having so many diverse princesses, in race, ability, and personality is so important. Every girl should be able to find herself in a princess

Obviously Rachel doesn’t know what it’s like to be abused, bullied, and/or lonely. Because if she did then she would know that it’s perfectly natural for girls and boys in that situation to want to find someone to be kind to him or her, to be his or her friend, and someone to genuinely love him or her.

The prince in the original "Snow White" was so captivated by her beauty in the glass case he bought her off the dwarves and planned to bring her to his castle to put on display. As the case was being moved, the servants dropped it or almost dropped it and the jolt caused the piece of apple stuck in Snow White's throat to come out, thus breaking the curse. Disney added the kiss being the antidote for the sleeping spell to save time, both animation and story-wise.

You can tell by the rest of the prince's actions it's a goodbye kiss: He approaches the casket with reverence, plants that gentle kiss, and then kneels down with his head bent in grief and/or perhaps prayer. That's not the body language of someone getting his jollies off of "kissing a girl he thought couldn't consent".
I’m a girl and Snow White was my favorite growing up. Even if she doesn’t appear strong like those girl bosses who don’t need no man she’s still strong. When things went wrong with her stepmother trying to kill her, she sang a whole song about looking at the bright side of things and staying positive. She remained kind, gentle and sweet. She took such good care of the dwarves and loved them. I hate that they try to perpetuate the message that in order for a woman to be strong she has to be more masculine and aggressive and physical etc. A woman can find strength in femininity and it may not always be obvious but it’s there. And there is a lot of strength in traditional feminine characters such as elegance, dignity, class, humility, the ability to forgive, nurturing, optimism, thankfulness, resilience, kindness, gentleness, endurance, patience. Those are the characteristics you can find in Snow White and Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Even if a man did save them, that happens all the time in real and of course it can happen the other way around or not at all they still have that strength that mental and emotional strength. They may embody the more feminine roles of cooking and cleaning; but that’s wonderful all the same. I cook and clean and I love to cook and take care of the people around me. And desiring a Prince Charming: love is wonderful and we shouldn’t be shaming these characters for wanting love. A woman doesn’t have to be aggressive, outspoken, fight better than boys, to be a strong role model or not want a man or not have a man save her to be considered strong. I find Snow White very strong. And I find it thoroughly insulting that Hollywood is shaming women who are like Snow White and more people traditional, shaming women who don’t “girl boss”, basically stereotyping what it means to be a strong woman. And what sucks even more is the more and more Miss Rachel and other cast members do interviews on Snow White remake the more apparent it becomes their actual disdain and hatred for the original movie. Miss Rachel especially has no respect whatsoever for the original movie. Even if you hate the movie you still got to respect it was extremely important. It was the first full length animated film. It made Disney what it is today. Without that movie there wouldn’t have been anything else. That movie was a pioneer for animation. And the taking away of dwarves to be inclusive but excluding real live dwarfs from a chance to star in a major motion picture… this movie is doing so many things wrong it’s borderline insulting.
I have discussed this with my family, my guy cousins and girl cousins, they all agreed that Rachel was being absolutely arrogant and naive. Perhaps because she's never been in that kind of situation. As for Disney Corp, lower department casting and staffers, I'm sure there are good, well intended creators. But Disney should seriously step aside, take a hiatus for 4, maybe 5 years and come back with fresh ideas. And allow Kenneth Branagh and his team to film a Snow White movie independently away from Disney. He did a great job with the Cinderella film. The way the actress exuberates and radiates kindness, politeness and other strengths without going overboard, it was chef's kiss. And her blue dress! Oh her blue dress, some day when I get married I want that style of dress and colour! 😍
@@hameley12 That’s the thing about remaking the original that was great about the 2015 Cinderella. First and foremost the director Kenneth like you said as well as the writers and actors obviously unlike here with Snow White seemed to enjoy the original film and understood is purpose and message as well as enjoyed the characters. But the modern updates they gave it such as establishing more romantic chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, to giving the stepmother a bit more a background whilst making her a juxtaposition to Cinderella’s character, etc. all of the changes made sense and paid homage to the original story. The changes didn’t take away from the original story and message but rather built upon it and improved it. Kenneth understood what he was remaking.

The creators gave the characters depth, strengths and weaknesses; they wrote while honoring the previous lives these characters had while keeping them in the modern world. They understood that the messaging: family, love, self-acceptance and forgiving others despite the hatred and hurt you've lived with your whole life. I'm sure Kenneth or another exceptional director could in the near future create a rewrite of Snow White and the Evil Queen. When the queen's hurt began, to the events that happens in Snow White film 1939, to the point when the prince defeats the Queen. And we see a different outcome at the end when they get married, Snow turns her head to the crowd and smiles. Her adoptive Evil mother from the background nods, and she mouths out 'Thank you, Snow. I'm sorry for everything my dear' They both could get a closing of old wounds. And move forward. I don't know, this is me just having a happy outtake on TH-cam. My little tea thoughts. So many incredibly good points here. Not every female character needs to be strong, politically powerful, or able to do everything for herself. So many feminine characters are put down because of their femininity, which is so unfair.
She literally could have asked for a way to cure all illnesses. Also, the prince thought Snow was dead and was kissing her goodbye. Lots of people do that to their dead loved ones. Also in ancient Egypt, it's believed that the man's job was to protect the woman physically, and the woman's job was to protect the man spiritually.
@@thepeculiardragon7475 Yes, they had known each other for a while before the events of the movie. I mean, I doubt he climbs the wall of a random castle to sing about his love to a random servant girl a lot. They knew each other and already loved each other.
I'm not sure if she knew about illnesses. She seemed pretty sheltered from the outside world, like Jasmine. I think if things didn't turn out like this then she'd likely hit that teenage rebellion stage and go exploring and find out there is life beyond the castle wall.
Mentioned it already, but it always makes me die a little inside when these people who passionately criticize a _cultural practice_ always seem to be the same ones who scream the loudest about how important cultural sensitivity is. It's just so hypocritical.
I cannot remember the video at the moment but someone did a video essay on Snow White through the eyes of what the USA wanted people to be like during a time of war. Snow is proactive, hard working and a little gullible. It was quite insightful. This is another take that makes just as much sense but from a different angle!
In my opinion there are more Wicked Queens in the world today and not enough Snow Whites to help balance things out. Also the stuff in the pie was not peas, it was gooseberries. Snow White made Grumpy a gooseberry pie which I imagine broke his slowly warming heart even more once she "died".
I aways saw the Prince's kiss as a kiss goodbye. In his mind he Had just met the girl he could spend the rest of his life with And then he finds her dead. Imagine having a wonderful first Date anxiously awaiting the second only to find out your date died. Even if it wasn't love at first site, it's a loss of love that could have been.
It also used to be or still is a tradition to kiss your dead loved ones one last time, idk why kissing is stripped down to only imply something sexual.

Idk, that ending is more "dark" than it's letting on, at least to me. The Prince may have been real in the beginning, but at the end I think he is just a stand in/metaphor for an "angel" taking SW away to a "better place". The whole premise is that SW is too pure for this world, doing her best she could in difficult situations. And even though she did earn the love of 7 strangers and the prince, she technically did die at the end. Her reward is eternal life in a "heavenly kingdom" which is shown at the end. That's my interpertation. Also considering she did pray at one point to an invisible being.
Another funny misstep that people make about the original movie is the idea that it perpetuated "True Loves Kiss" when in actual fact, it's "Love's First Kiss" that awakes her. The evil queen even researches this just after making the apple. So you could technically argue that Snow's and Prince Florian's relationship is more like a first crush than a fully developed relationship.
There's an extra level of irony in the fact that the people criticizing the cultural practice are usually the ones screaming loudest about being culturally sensitive
Snow praying is showing that she is grateful for everything she has been given. She doesn't have an ego that insists she accomplished everything due to her strong independence or something. She knows despite being wanted dead, and living in exile, she is fortunate to have met the dwarves and the hospitality they graciously shared with her.
Didn't Rachel said that she respects the original but also that; the trees were scary (I agree, they were terrifying) The prince was a stalker which is wrong. He met Snow white, sing a song about his love for her then hey never saw each other untill the end. She clearly haven't saw the movie or else Rachel would see that the prince is not dangerous. She also said that Snow's dream was stupid, dreaming about love is useless while being an independant ruler is better. This lady has the audacity to insult the original movie but still wants to play the heroine? That makes no sense 😐

I just cannot for the life of me understand why Disney hates me so much. Why can't women be kind, bake cakes, sing to animals? It will make Snow White a fantastic queen. To bring up the “Snow White Praying” scene. It’s very likely that Catholicism or Christianity in general is the main religion in the story. It’s actually common for fairytales, folklores, and even epic stories to include religion. King Arthur’s story includes both Christian and Pagan themes and Dante’s Inferno had both Biblical and Greek Myth figures in Hell. Also, it can show the difference between Snow White (a good Christian woman) and Evil Queen (An wicked Witch)
I wouldn't be surprised if Snow is represented as Catholic. Seeing as it's a German story and that for a long while, Germany was the Holy Roman Empire. It's interesting to think on.
It's nice to see more people actually covering the strengths of Snow White's character. Heck, if they were going to try to go with a more modern girlboss take, they should take her kindness, optimism and willingness to work hard as the reason why she's a more worthy leader than the queen. The queen is too vain and self serving to rule, so having someone whose actually worked and earned the respect of the people i.e. the dwarves would make sense.
The crazy thing is, they did it right with Cinderella. They added a few scenes that elevated the whole story. I think Snow White would be great if more scenes with the Prince and relationship built-up was shown before Snow White gets exiled. Here's me rambling a bit about it: Establishing scene of the stepmother being evil and vain, killing the King probably with a posion apple like a chekovs gun and having to deal with her stepdaughter who's an adorable little girl. We get a montage of how the Princess is growing up and that the little girl turns into a beauty. She and the Prince probably meet up a few times in between the montage which would establish their chemistry and him wanting to seek her out. They grow up and the evil Queen gets news that Snow White is the new beauty in town. Outraged, she sends a huntsman to take the girl to the forest Perhaps she was talking with the Prince when he took her away. The classic story happens with Snow White Meanwhile The Prince waits for her to come back, but when she doesn't he confronts the Queen and she locks him up in the dungeon The Step Mother realizes the heart the huntsman brought is not Snow White's and is very outraged She makes the plan, yada yada and leaves the castle Maybe there's a battle there, where the Princes loyal guards help him out of the dungeon and he rushes out in the forest to find Snow White but it's too late, she's in the crystal tomb. Feeling overwhelmed with emotion and his love for Snow White he kisses her one last time and is amazed when she wakes up They live happily ever after Is that so hard, Disney?
I do believe in one of the tellings Snow White and the prince were already acquainted by the time that the Evil Queen entered the picture. Some of your idea I can get behind though it does start to sound a lot like Sleeping Beauty by the end so it could use a little fine tuning.

But yeah, I think showing a bit more of the prince with Snow White and getting their chemistry established a bit more is what's missing. I never said that my idea is perfect by the way. It definitely needs a lot of work.
These are great ideas! That’s the thing about remaking the original that was great about the 2015 Cinderella. First and foremost the director writers and actors obviously unlike here with Snow White seemed to enjoy the original film and understood is purpose and message as well as enjoyed the characters. But the modern updates they gave it such as establishing more romantic chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, to giving the stepmother a bit more a background whilst making her a juxtaposition to Cinderella’s character, etc. all of the changes made sense and paid homage to the original story. The changes didn’t take away from the original story and message but rather built upon it and improved it. These changes you proposed will enhance the story. Disney should hire you!
My favorite take on The Kiss is that the Prince was kissing his friend/love goodbye. There are cases of men being creepy with women's dead bodies (look up the history of the CPR dummy for a brief example) but this was clearly not one of those cases. He was obviously mourning her, just as much as everyone else, and even paid respects when he knelt down. He was meant to be looking for her for the whole movie, but this was cut because, simply put, his design was too hard on the animators. He was looking for her, and when he finally found her, he thought she was dead. He was kissing her goodbye.
0:11 I say the reasoning of becoming an old woman is as being Snow White's step mother, the Evil Queen knows of Snow's good heart. She knows that Snow would most definitely be kind to some "sweet little old lady" which would make it so much easier for the Evil Queen to get to her without suspicions. While there are better ways she could've done as a witch, the Queen basically used Snow's kindness to her advantage.
I think a core issue with a lot of the Snow White criticism is that people act like she needs to represent what every girl should aspire to be. Should every woman be quiet, gentle, positive, and enjoy a domestic “tradwife” lifestyle? No. But that’s who Snow White is, and how is that bad? She doesn’t need to be a role model for every single girl in the world. She’s just one character.
I don’t think tradwife lifestyle would be problematic if men were more appreciative and supportive of women in general, rather than seeking to control them to help prop up their own fragile egos. I’m aware that’s not the case in all tradwife set ups, but I am so bloody wary of all these messages popping up to encourage women to be the very things a lot of men openly admit they see as weak. We still get blamed for the bad stuff that happens to us when we are feminine etc. I liked the original Snow White, and while I don’t hate traditional feminine qualities, I’d rather be the Mother of Dragons from Game of Thrones, if I had to choose.
As a man who enjoyed Disney films as a child, Snow White always seemed to me much "stronger" than many male superheroes. She had no super powers or weapons, and she was being chased by a queen who at the same time was a witch, that is, an enemy 100x more powerful than her, but still, she didn't get desperate, frustrated, she maintained her composure, and most importantly, she maintained her values. This was important to me, because men fight many battles in their lives, but not all battles we can win through brute force. Hollywood seems to have forgotten that punching enemies isn't the only form of "strength" a character can have. I worry about what the values and ideals will be of a child who grew up seeing only dumb male characters and female characters obsessed with a poor definition of strength and power.
I agree - too many people only define “strength” as physical, when we are not only physical beings. Getting someone to back down just using your intellect is often a greater achievement than brute force, like you say.
All they had to do was adapt the Radio City Music Hall version. It fills plot holes, there are more characters, and everyone's more developed. Just have the prince attend the king and queen's wedding, and it's all good to go.
So in 20, 30, 50, 80 years later, everything to do with frozen or tangled or Moana is gonna be a problem. Just like all the shit we liked growing up is suddenly a problem for no reason

That's something I found very amusing too. "Oh look at us, we're so new and innovative, a strong independent snow white!" And there has been SO many strong independent snow whites! At the time Snow White and the huntsman came out, there were two OTHER snow white movies too, in the same year. And she was strong and independent in both those movies too, wielding swords and stuff. In the "Ever after show." again, she's wielding crossbow and sword. in "Wolf among us." she's the one always keeping the big bad wolf on a tight leash and yes... gets a sword. There's a horror movie version from the 80's where she strong and independent. There's so many of these things. It's not new at all, it's very old.

She also still maintains the idea that everyone has goodness in them. It takes a lot of strength to do was she does in that show, because she forgives the queen in the end.

@turnipcrazy4602 I remember the TV series. The cast did an amazing job at keeping the original thought and morals of previous character's lives, all while taking place in the modern world. When Snow comes to Regina to defend her husband and daughter, Emma. She says 'From a mother to another mother, please give me back my husband's love. Give me my daughter's love back, too' In another scene you can see the facade breaking away as Henry her son states after finding out he has another mother 'The way you treated me wasn't an accident. You made it so one could believe me. You made me feel like I was crazy' Today we call this gaslighting. And thankfully Snow, Prince Charming, Emma, and the Evil Queen got redeemed and forgave each other. In real life this would be very rare, sometimes abusers will not take full accountability for their actions, not redeemed, not loved. All Regina wanted is the same goal as everyone else's to be loved, accepted and have a family. That facade of evilness is broken up over time, thanks to Henry's love, and the townspeople finally accepting her at the end.
What really makes me angry with people defending the remakes concept is they blatantly are taking the original film and story literally/ realistically with out stepping back and realizing, Hey, it's a fairytale. Fairytale stories aren't meant to be realistic in fact that's the entire point of a fairytale. escaping from reality. Snow white is supposed to be hyper feminie, caring, maybe a tad naïve but She's a good character. She doesn't need to be head strong or 'girl boss' because that never was the point of her story. It's supposed to be about love at first sight too, a common trope in fairy tales even today. if the story was meant to be realistic in any capacity Snow white wouldn't of sung an entire song calling the prince handsome, romantic and essentially fantasying about him coming to take her away from her troubles. It's like people watched the original film, erased all context from their minds and said "Omg it's such an unrealistic film". It's like watching Alice n wonderland and being upset everything is nonsense when that's the entire point. It's a fantasy for girls of all ages, nothing more, nothing less. I just don't understand how we let these people into the cinema business. If you want realistic? watch a documentary.
Yeah, people don't understand that there is an art to storytelling. And it should be believable and consistent within the lore of the story, but it's not going to be "realistic." Also, a good story isn't just an escape. Sure, it should have a surface level fun story to enjoy, but a well written story will also have a deeper meaning and themes to think about.
When I think of escapism in the context of these stories, I think of how it must've been like to be an average girl during the time of the fairy tales (or even the movies). There are, to this day, many, many cinderellas and snow whites out there, with terrible guardians and no possibility of escaping unless a miracle occurs. Heck, my grandma had a similar story, down to being the maid of her foster family until she ran away with my grandpa and they had their happily ever after. She had no other option because most people aren't privileged enough to choose, but leave it to out of touch hollywood elites to forget how the real world is like. Hell, even I as a kid went back to these movies not just because they were entertaining, but because they told me that if I stayed kind and optimistic, good things would happen. And they have! It's far more empowering than any of these entitled, rude, fake girlbosses, but I digress.
Especially considering this was out during the Great Depression. People back then didn't need realism - they needed escapism. And a fantasy/fairy tale story about an optimistic, absolute sweetheart of a princess making it through tough times probably made things a lot less bleak. It's not above criticism, sure, but I feel it's ridiculous to criticize it without even taking in the whole context behind the original.
Now I'm imagining Alice going through Wonderland, having rational conversations with everyone, being happy there's absolutely no logical fallacies or cognitive dissonance to be found, and then waking up and going about her day.
Well, you don't have to agree with the choices the storytellers made, but she did fall in love with the prince. So their love was at least a part of this story
Honestly, Snow White is the most misunderstood princess by our modern society. Like Cinderella, she was an abuse victim who didn't have a lot of options. Of course, she's going to dream of love and being loved. Moreover, just because she is kind and doesn't scream or threaten doesn't mean she's passive or submissive. She had a very motherly approach including being stern and it was all for the better. And the Evil Queen tricking her doesn't make her dumb. Lots of smart people get taken advantage of when being kind because some people are just that twisted.
Feminists always make me laugh. Ignoring the constant victim blaming, there are MANY Disney ladies who are actually more fitting of the "damsel" label. This isn't even all of them but I will list some females who get in more actual danger than the original princesses, especially Cinderella (who wasn't even a damsel as she was not in danger at all): Jasmine from Aladdin. Take the slavery to Jafar, hourglass problem, and the many times she gets captured in the TV series and, yeah. Damsel. Mulan: Her going to war automatically puts her in danger. If she didn't blow up Shan Yu with fireworks, and was weak and hadn't mastered her skills, she wouldn't have survived a SECOND. Belle: Attacked by wolves, Gaston chases after her, in the Christmas movie she almost drowns. Rapunzel from Tangled. Literally a hostage the whole movie, gets actaully tied up at one point, and again in the TV series she gets captured a few times. Jane from Tarzan. The original movie she is not proactive, the sequel Tarzan and Jane has her kidnapped by Bobby, and the TV series has her kidnapped several times. Esmeralda from Hunchback: Hmmm. She spends the whole movie in jeopardy. Persecuted for her race? Yup! Chased after by a man who wants her dead but also as his bride? Yup! Kida from Atlantis: In the first movie, Rourke and Helga threaten to kill her. Then she's taken away in crystalized form on their zeppelin and almost gets blown up when Helga shoots it. Then in Milo's Return, the entire gang including her are almost blown up AGAIN, and then she gets kidnapped by a crazy man who thinks he's a god and she's his Viking daughter. Kida is overpowered surprisingly easily. EVERY heroine from the Peter Pan duology: Wendy spends one half of the movie being attacked, either by Tink or the mermaids. The other half, she's Hook's hostage. Tink and Tiger Lily are also victims of Hook. Wendy's DAUGHTER becomes a victim of Hook in Return to Neverland. Jenny from Oliver and Company: Kidnapped by Sykes and almost fed to his dogs. Penny from The Rescuers: Kidnapped by Medusa. Meg from Hercules: Kidnapped by Hades and then dropped into a death cavern. Olivia from Great Mouse Detective: Kidnapped by Ratigan TWICE. Anna and Elsa from Frozen: Anna almost dies when she has to jump off a cliff to escape the snow monster, and is left to die by Hans. Elsa is attacked by Hans' guards and then locked in jail. These are DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, but the feminists say very little about the Peter Pan girls and say nothing or applaud every other girl for being strong, and others they don't even know exist.
What I like about Snow White is that she could have been a victim, but she refused to be one! She always made the best of her situation. Also, thanks for reminding about Milo's Return ...I was trying to forget that movie existed lol
I will argue against Mulan because your point for her is more of a "What If" situation and not actually what ended up happening in the movie, which is very unfair. The most important part of The Damsel in Distress trope isn't about just being in danger, it's about being saved from the danger. While yes, Mulan is actively in danger, she didn't need to be saved by someone especially in the climax of the movie. Which doesn't make her a damsel. Also, your point on Rapunzel is a bit hypocritical when you take into account Cinderella was also locked in a room and needed help from her animal friends (which does, in fact, make her Damsel) Back on Cinderella, while she does need help being saved in the first film. Since you brought up sequels, Cinderella 3 is a good example of her saving herself. So she wasn't a Damsel (I didn't bring up 2 because nothing of note happens in there). But she is in one. And so are Snow White and Aurora, AND THATS NOT A BAD THING.
And trust me, as a Peter Pan fan, THEY DO talk about Wendy. Just not to the same capacity because she's not a Disney Princess and hence, not in the constant spotlight. Peter Pan fans are usually very good at shutting down arguments against Wendy by bringing up that Wendy is a child. Jane gets a pass because she's shown for majority of the movie to be a very capable and clever girl, even rescuing Peter and the Lost Boys from Hook after she got them captured. That moment where she's in real danger with Hook and Peter needed to save her was short and not nearly as important as the scene leading up to her rescuing Peter and the Lost Boys. If anyone was the Damsel in Return to Neverland, it's Peter Pan himself 😂. And because Jane is a sequel character that came directly after Wendy, "Feminists" would be more forgiving to Jane's character as they would see her as an "improvement" from Wendy. I love Wendy and Jane for different reasons and I don't see any of them being an improvement from the other.
Also there should be nothing wrong about being a damsel in distress... at all... That there is actual danger and you fear for their life is good story telling. I mean by this logic Tony Stark is a big mansel in distress, he needs saving ALL the time, both from others and himself. but that's also what makes him interesting you know, he DOES need saving, he can't accomplish anything by himself. He is in desperate need of all those he has around him care for him. Heck in my favorite manga "One Piece." it is made so clear that all the Straw Hats relies on each other and need each other, all the time. Yes Luffy is always the one defeating the final boss, but he could never EVER have gotten there without every single member of his crew, and that's the point, they all need each other.

Second- she had the other slipper. Prince Alto August Ferdinand Christopher Rupert Windimir Vladimir Carl Alexander Francois Reginald Lancelot Herman (yes really) Gregory James Henri Thomas "Kit" Charming has no real involvement with the rescue, he's just in the ball scene to show that even when the shoe's on the other foot (😂), there can be discomfort there too as you have two sheltered kids here...but the girl is smarter. Even in the 1950 original you can see that a later compliment of equating Cinderella with Belle was valid because she's both smart and awake. Prince Charming does way more in three than he ever did in the original+ it was King Maximillian who ordered the shoe search, not the prince.
Jokes aside, your analysis was splendid, how you connected grumpy's hatred of women as a warning regarding face value and that true beauty is an inner one. In the original fairy tale the queen does try to kill Snow White multiple times besides the apple and the huntsmen. A poisoned comb is used as is a corset that constricts her breathing. Walt took those out because he felt that it would make Snow look like an idiot to be tricked that often. Also, thank you for this wonderful defense of Snow White.
Something that scares me about snow white is that the evil queen is more relevant than ever in this social media world. It's creepy how similar they are. She sees competition in others and attack Sbow white for existing while being superficial, only caring about herself. Meanwhile, Snow White isn't really gullible, she's just innocent. Innocent people will always give evil people a chance and regret it later. Remaining optimistic and seeing the good in people even after betrayal and abuse is really hard. It takes resilience a lot people lack, instead they become bitter and awful, thinking this will be safer for them. Snow white is powerful.
Snow White is the kind of person I aspire to be. She’s brave in the face of adversity and kind to all people. Most of all, I love her gentleness and softness. I do hate how people make fun of her for being soft and crying. Uh, hello? Getting upset and crying when you’re overwhelmed or scared is part of being human. Being soft is also a truly hard characteristic to keep in a cynical and cruel world, and she maintains it. Basically, Snow White is a comforting and inspiring character, much more than any ass-kicking girlbosses that movies try to push today, and I wish people would stop bashing her so relentlessly.
What i really hate about these most of 1. Most of the princesses help out the princes both princesses, and princes help each other in the movie. Beauty and the beasts tangled princess and the frog. Both princesses and princes helped each other I remember a song called cinderella Snapped. I hate this song because it's just a hate men song like how can these people forget some of these princess have female villains? Tangled? Cinderella snow white. These people speak like the princes are the villains of the story. And it so funny how there people forget the princess has goals. Not needed a man. Cinderella wants to go to the ball. Rapunzel wants to see the lanterns 'Tiana wants her own restaurant. When did anyone say they wanted true love. The only character who wanted that is anna. These people really really piss me off

I love your analysis of this situation. Snow White’s moral lessons (along with Cinderella and other older heroines’ tales) are much more applicable to everyday life imo. There are few girl bosses, but everyone must do the dishes at some point. I also loved your analysis on the complementary roles of men and women in this movie, as well as in the Bible. Tbh I need to rewatch the original Snow White at some point.
Finally more and more people understand what Disney Snow White is showing. It’s non-sense to say dreaming for true love and hardworking are weak. Disney actually blaming every feminine girls and mothers for being themselves. Wendy in the original movie is kind and brave. Although she doesn’t fight with sword, she chose to die instead of following hook even she was so scared. Physical strength and power doesn’t make you a strong female. Ursula, mother gothel, Queen of heart have powers and strength over man. I don’t see how better they are. They are selfish, ridiculous, pride. Mirror Mirror was an excellent adaption. Everything about it was beautiful--the actors, the costumes, the cinematography, and the modern feminist twist was like the cherry on top of the sundae--they had Snow White fight with a sword and rescue the man but she didn't lose any of her gentle compassionate nature. Meanwhile, the "official" snow white disney live action film can't even bother to hire a talented cast, the costumes look like 50% discounted Halloween costumes, atrocious CGI dwarves, and the writing will probably be downright awful considering the only thing good thing they can say about the film is how feminist it is.

Usually, if someone WANTS power, its a sign they probably should not have it. The best leaders are those who don't really want the position, but do it anyway for the benefit of those around them, because they know its the right thing to do.
What I find interesting is the Queen seems to have a weird sense of "honor" when it comes to being the fairest, like she's willing to kill the competition but not adjust her own looks. Maybe that speaks to her vanity that she can't imagine improving her own looks. Also I like the detail of her faking a heart attack to have Snow White invite her in, strange old lady is one thing, strange old lady with a heart condition is another. It actaully upset me when Cinderella did this with the Fairy godmother and Beauty and the Beast did it with the Enchantress (Original left some ambiguity, remake did not). 14:40 OH it was much worst in the original draft that's where the Queen sent suitors that rejected her proposals, including the Prince. Poor guy had his storyline removed and divided between Charming and Philip.

There's a drawing of the Disney princesses all playing D&D and Snow is, of course, Dungeon Master. It's perfect because she'd rule that table like she ruled the dwarf household, and very sweetly put an end to any shenanigans from the players.

Pocahontas uses the colors of the wind to spread love and peace. Tiana earns Mama Odie's help. Even ASHA. She never asks for wishes to come true to benefit herself, but the people and her dad.
Oh boy, where to begin? I guess I'll start with a brief note that the kiss being nonconsensual is so absurd it's almost funny. It's clearly established in the opening scenes of the film that Snow White and the prince were already in love with one another, so there's no reason to think she would've consented to him kissing her, even while unconscious (and especially if she knew it was necessary to break the spell). Later in the film, it's further confirmed when the Queen in her disguise, aware of Snow White's romance with the prince, suggests she makes a wish related to that before biting into the "magic wishing apple." Snow White then follows this up with a wish to be reunited with the prince before biting into the poison apple and falling under its spell. This is actually an improvement from the original Grimms' fairy tale, and perhaps Disney even saw how problematic it was to have the prince kiss her at random without them already being in love (even though it was the 1930s). Second, the Queen is actually an excellent example of toxic femininity at work. She was so vain and petty that she couldn't stand the idea of any woman in the kingdom being better looking than her, including her own stepdaughter. A lot of real life women can act the same way, working as hard as they can to tear down women whose appearance and/or success they envy. (One good example of this is all the overtly sexist and misogynistic attacks that left-wing women made on Sarah Palin during and after America's 2008 presidential campaign.) But in the film, the Queen's obsession with outer beauty comes at the expense of inner beauty, which ultimately reveals itself on the outside after she transforms herself into a hideous, ugly old hag. (This makes it all the more ironic when Snow White falls under the spell and the Queen, still in disguise, cackles maniacally and declares that she will now be the fairest in the land.) Third and perhaps most importantly, rescuing someone that can't rescue themselves isn't sexist as long as it's equal opportunity and applies to both sexes. That's just part of being a good person. I am a cisgender, heterosexual male myself and would absolutely come to the aid of a woman in need, but guess what? I would absolutely come to the aid of another man in need, too. (Also, I would never, ever, EVER lay a finger on a woman without her consent, but I digress. See, wokesters? We AREN'T all a bunch of toxic, sexist, misognyistic sex predators who objectify women.) In the case of the film, the huntsman refused to kill her because he's not a murderer at heart and doesn't kill innocent people. When he warns Snow White that her stepmother wants her dead, she follows his orders to flee to the forest and never return to the castle. She gets terrified while traversing the woods, though, and eventually collapses in her fear. When the forest animals find her, she realizes that she didn't need to be afraid and she could be brave and strong despite the danger she was in. So the idea that she wasn't strong enough is also hogwash. She wasn't weak, she was simply afraid, and who wouldn't be given her circumstances? The fact that random TH-camrs like us understand Disney princess films better than Disney themselves does, and that Disney listens to the attacks from people who DON'T understand them, is really a sad commentary on the state of society and pop culture in the present day. If more people just watched these films closely again, then they would realize that none of these attacks hold any water at all.
You know what the moral Snow White to me is? You can find your people, you CAN get out of the terrible situation and you’ll find a group that actually cares about you. You don’t have to change who you are, you don’t have to heal alone. That’s why she’s my favorite, the prince is nice I guess, but it’s her friends that save her first. Thank you for making this video

I'm tired of people being against sexism while at the same time being sexist. The "women can be whatever they want" only works when the woman is not feminine. Old feminism was about accepting every type of woman, the masculine AND the feminine. A woman is not inferior just because she chooses to have a partner and a family. Male characters have a partner, sometimes multiple partners, and are not seen as less. In my opinion, is nice having more female characters that are not focused on romance, as a woman who believes she is on the aromantic spectrum i actually like that. But people, there must be balance! not every female character needs to be weak, not every female character needs to be strong. Don't put them on a box of "they can only be feminine" or "they can only be masculine" Let female characters variate the same way as male characters!
The important thing to remember is that in 1937, the Great Depression was in full swing and the threat of WW2 was around the corner. So Snow White being hardworking, positive in the face of adversity, and putting on a brave face despite the existential threat looming out there for her was extremely relevant to the folks watching her in theaters. American and European audiences needed a plucky heroine with a can-do attitude and general cheeriness -- not a sword-wielding badass. It's sort of funny that as we descend further into a recession and as the threat of a global conflict becomes more and more real, Disney is trying to bash Snow White rather than just capitalize on her classic charm in a new century.

So about a year or two before he passed away my grandfather who saw Snow White in theaters went with us to Disney world. We were able to get him into a line to meet Snow White and he got to tell her that he's loved her since the 30s and the actress did a perfect job! And that the prince was inspired by Douglas Fairbanks and he would be 18 years old. And that was written in the book called the art of Walt Disney. But because it was only a draft, thing changed from that to the final product. At the end, Snow white model was more influence by her voice actress Adriana Caselotti who was around 20 and the prince took after his voice actor Harry stockwell who was around 30. So that probably were the misconception came from. People took Snow white age from the draft were it was said she would be 14. And for the prince age, they probably used his voice actor age. And people took it as a fact. Despite the age never been officially confirmed. This is a perfect case of the telephone game.

I’m not a girlfriend or wife to anyone, but I do clean as a job and while most people appreciate what cleaners do, there’s definitely people who look down on it and those who do other things they don’t want to (or even do want to, but can’t). I always thought the reason why the mirror says Snow White is prettier is because she’s beautiful on the outside and the inside, also originally there would be more scenes about her and the prince developing their relationship but because of how hard animation is and the time they had to finish it and for the movie to not be too long they cut it
The old school princesses all share one treat and that is optimism. Cinderella is kind to everyone, even to the smallest mice. Snow is compassionate to the dwarfs, animals and even to the evil queen. Aurora was a heart so big. You can find a good in the strangest places.
If I remember correctly, some previous Live Action Disney Princesses like Elle Fanning (Sleeping Beauty), Naomi Scott (Jasmine) and Lily James (Cinderella) actually were the ones who appreciated and truely loves the Original Princesses they're going to act, while also celebrating their charms with an extra matureness and modern-idea as well. Which is why these examples were the Live Actiobs which were actually really good! In terms of Snow White though..... not only the actress doesn't even capture the beauty and sweetness of the original, but even mocks the character she's meant to play as old fashioned. Seriously, I have nothing good things to say about this actress.

I try to ignore what actors talk about as far as views on a film just because it’s never them. It’s the education that they lack about the media they consume and not having a lot of support from the studios by putting these folks on the visual chopping block. This is nothing new, but I do appreciate when media like this can acknowledge the good and the bad.

rachel never said the original snow white wasn’t “enough of this” or “enough of that” so i think you have it wrong in that aspect. the main point that she’s getting across in her interviews is the fact that the live action is going to lean into certain parts of the story and snow white’s power MORE because they weren’t fully explored in the original. she isn’t at all insinuating that the original princess was weak.

And Cinderella in the sequels is great. In the second one, she has flaws. The first part is about her going through princess training and giving into pressure to BE perfect, but she defies those rules and does it her way. She even forgives Anastasia and helps her get a boy she likes because Cindy tries to see the good and looks for the good in everyone. She didn't come out bitter. And in the third movie, she escapes the pumpkin herself when she's being driven off a mountain.

I don't know if people know this, but at the time that Snow White was set, it was very normal to kiss your loved ones goodbye. It wasn't seen as weird even if they were dead. (also I love the clips you put in, I'm a big fan of Gillagan's Island)

You can also read the Evil Queen as a metaphor for a massive disruption in the normal functioning of the world (i.e. The Great Depression), with the prince representing the normal. After all, Snow is a princess and princesses marry princes and become queens. Thus the prince doesn't represent a reward so much as the inevitable return of the normal, and the story is about enduring hard times, with its core message being that hard times inevitably end.

I’m a girl and it still baffles me this generation sees Snow White and Cinderella’s femininity and demureness as weak. They’re probably two of the strongest Disney princesses. Snow White and Cinderella were ABUSED. They were emotionally and verbally abused, both of their stepmothers consistently tried to ruin their lives. And yet they remained strong, determined, and faithful until the end. Think about how many Disney princesses actually have abusive parents. Not very many, right? And as someone who grew up in a toxic home environment, that’s beyond inspiring to me. But no because they want love that doesn’t make them feminist.

Snow White and Cinderella are victims of their circumstance. These people victim blame them for things they could not control.
There is this stereotype nowadays that in order for a woman to be strong or a female lead to be strong she has to fight better than the boys and fight everyone, embody more masculine traits, etc. However there is so much strength in femininity and traditional feminine characters like those two.
Patience, endurance, forgiveness, nurturing, kindness, resilience, dignity, elegance, class, humility, perseverance, thankfulness, optimism, etc. I mean look at how Snow White is. She’s so strong and my all time favorite Disney Princess growing up.
She was abused mentally and physically for years by her stepmom. And when she runs away after the attempt on her life despite realizing she has no family as the only family alive is actively trying to murder her, no friends, no home, no food, etc. instead of whining about it. She apologizes for being afraid and then looks for ways to start over. She dusts herself off like a badass despite being fourteen and says essentially “okay this is my life now. I need to accept it, move on, and then figure out what to do next” and step one was find a shelter!
She wanted to care for the dwarves whom she thought were orphans because of how kind and nurturing she was. They bash her for cooking and cleaning, but seriously think of it this way: she’s offering them her skills that she acquired when she was forced into slavery which are cooking and cleaning as a rent payment in exchange for housing. And even then she refused to offer them the fruits of her labor if they didn’t behave themselves as gentleman.
Cinderella. They victim blame her like crazy. She is literally abused and in real life when people are abused you don’t judge them for not escaping. What could she have done? Murder her stepmother? Run away and do what, live on the streets alone and penniless? Could she have found employment? I doubt it! When she meets the Grand Duke as well she held the key to her freedom. That shoe! She got herself out.
What I love so much about these two is that when such terrors occur in one’s life it’s so easy for one to become bitter and one’s heart to harden. Yet they remain kind and optimistic and sweet!
And what’s so wrong with falling in love? What’s so wrong with wanting a handsome prince to sweep you off your feet? What’s so wrong with a man saving them? It doesn’t make them weak!

It would’ve been easy and understandable for Snow White and Cinderella to turn out bitter given given their circumstances (and basically straight up abuse) and yet they ended up turn out to be a kind and good person regardless. One thing that surprised me about Cinderella was that the live action Disney version actually kept the spirit of the original while adding very good modern things to it and they avoided inserting any toxic identity politics. 1) the director and actors obviously enjoyed the original story and were intent on paying homage to it and the original characters
2) they casted actors who looked like and loved their characters
3) they stayed true to the original story and it’s message whilst giving it appropriate and meaningful modern updates that didn’t take away from the original message and improved/built upon the original story: example such as the prince and Cinderella having more romantic scenes and chemistry and the prince having more agency and a personality in the story, Cinderella’s childhood shown, the stepmother giving a backstory whilst still establishing why and that fact she’s evil and her backstory even contrasted Cinderella that while Cinderella has horrors and tragedy occur she didn’t become embittered like the stepmother

People love a character who is kind and is trying to keep calm so she can make people feel secure but still has faults??? Crazy!

The thing that annoys me the most about this remake is the contempt for the original. This was the first full length animated film. The lead actresses should have had nothing but good things to say about the original.
These actresses wouldn't be where they are without the original! So yeah, you're right, they should only have positive things to say about it. I mean, it's not that the original is above criticism, but the time to bring that up is definitely not during interviews about your remake. And their criticism wasn't helpful or accurate anyways.
You know what also gets to me about this?
They are mocking something... That these people are INCAPABLE of making themselves.
There is no more actual hand drawn animation, it's all computer and even when it looks hand drawn they are using flash programming to sort of cheat code.
The way this was done back then, the artistry and work that went into it, the detailing. They are simply unable to do anything like it themselves. At all.
they should be in awe.
These people are standing on the shoulders of GIANTS that are lifting them up. And they are taking a big steaming dump on that giant.

You should see the trailer that dropped a few days ago. It’s being ratio to heck and back. There’s a whistle while you work sequence that leaked and it’s getting trashed for good reason. I mean the whole thing is just terrible and Rachel is not Snow White. I’m not even putting looks to the equation which factor you can get that at, but they do factor but even worse than that for me is the fact that she doesn’t act like snow White the personality isn’t there on or off screen and what’s even worse than all of that is that iconic beautiful voice that we all know court of one Adriana Caselotti is not there. Rachel doesn’t even try to replicate that.
It's also important to understand the context in which this movie was made. The original movie was made during the Great Depression, so Snow's attitude of always being cheerful and easygoing, never complaining about her situation but always making the best of it, was meant to be a sort of message of encouragement to all the people watching. Everyone was suffering when this movie came out. There were people crying in the theater when Snow White died. The prince and the ending visual of the castle in the clouds can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Either it's literal, and she goes on to marry the prince and become a princess in his castle, or he's an angel who's come to take her to Heaven. Either way, the ending is meant to signify that all of her struggles are over, and she can live out the rest of her days(or all of time) at rest and at peace.
I got that lovely religious going to heaven feel at the end too. It blew me away as a kid and I always imagined what the castle looked like inside
the prince being an angel to save her is my head canon now.
And the movie is set in the 1500s. So that too.
So SW does die at the end! It makes it even more sadder! She did her best she could under difficult circumstances, treated those around her kindly (even Grumpy), tried to b positive. Depending on what u believe, her reward was much greater than we are lead to believe, eternal life in a heavenly kingdom. That's why when the 7 dwarfs say goodbye to her at the end, they cant come with her. She was resurrected in heavenly form and the Prince/Angel made her visible so they can say goodbye to her!

Snow White just wants to find love and live happily ever after. Part of the reason I cringe at the idea of a girl boss Snow White is because Snow's dreams are simple but not easy. She's isolated, she has a stepmother that wants her dead, and she's forced to hide in the woods. Snow White just wants to be happy, but the villain won't let that happen because she's a threat by existing. Queen could've sent Snow White with the Prince in the beginning, she gets full power and Snow gets away, but because Snow is the fairest she's now competition, heck in early drafts Prince get held hostage because he refuses her.
There are thousands of girls out there who are still like Snow White. Insulting her ends up insulting all these girls.
I have scoliosis and am very small bodied. I'm very emotional and cry the second I'm confronted. I stand no chance in a fight, physical or verbal, against a man or a woman frankly. I've always related more to princesses like the classic three because I'm just a lot more like them. Don't get me wrong I love all of the princesses, I love the ones who are much more characterized and modern too. But I can't relate to them being so passionate and headstrong. That's why having so many diverse princesses, in race, ability, and personality is so important. Every girl should be able to find herself in a princess

That's the prince in "Sleeping Beauty", and yeah, that's not defendable at all. The prince in the original "Snow White" was so captivated by her beauty in the glass case he bought her off the dwarves and planned to bring her to his castle to put on display. As the case was being moved, the servants dropped it or almost dropped it and the jolt caused the piece of apple stuck in Snow White's throat to come out, thus breaking the curse. Disney added the kiss being the antidote for the sleeping spell to save time, both animation and story-wise.

I’m a girl and Snow White was my favorite growing up. Even if she doesn’t appear strong like those girl bosses who don’t need no man she’s still strong. When things went wrong with her stepmother trying to kill her, she sang a whole song about looking at the bright side of things and staying positive. She remained kind, gentle and sweet. She took such good care of the dwarves and loved them. I hate that they try to perpetuate the message that in order for a woman to be strong she has to be more masculine and aggressive and physical etc. A woman can find strength in femininity and it may not always be obvious but it’s there. And there is a lot of strength in traditional feminine characters such as elegance, dignity, class, humility, the ability to forgive, nurturing, optimism, thankfulness, resilience, kindness, gentleness, endurance, patience. Those are the characteristics you can find in Snow White and Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Even if a man did save them, that happens all the time in real and of course it can happen the other way around or not at all they still have that strength that mental and emotional strength. They may embody the more feminine roles of cooking and cleaning; but that’s wonderful all the same. I cook and clean and I love to cook and take care of the people around me. And desiring a Prince Charming: love is wonderful and we shouldn’t be shaming these characters for wanting love. A woman doesn’t have to be aggressive, outspoken, fight better than boys, to be a strong role model or not want a man or not have a man save her to be considered strong. I find Snow White very strong. And I find it thoroughly insulting that Hollywood is shaming women who are like Snow White and more people traditional, shaming women who don’t “girl boss”, basically stereotyping what it means to be a strong woman.
And what sucks even more is the more and more Miss Rachel and other cast members do interviews on Snow White remake the more apparent it becomes their actual disdain and hatred for the original movie. Miss Rachel especially has no respect whatsoever for the original movie. Even if you hate the movie you still got to respect it was extremely important. It was the first full length animated film. It made Disney what it is today. Without that movie there wouldn’t have been anything else. That movie was a pioneer for animation.

As for Disney Corp, lower department casting and staffers, I'm sure there are good, well intended creators. But Disney should seriously step aside, take a hiatus for 4, maybe 5 years and come back with fresh ideas.
And allow Kenneth Branagh and his team to film a Snow White movie independently away from Disney. He did a great job with the Cinderella film. The way the actress exuberates and radiates kindness, politeness and other strengths without going overboard, it was chef's kiss.

First and foremost the director Kenneth like you said as well as the writers and actors obviously unlike here with Snow White seemed to enjoy the original film and understood is purpose and message as well as enjoyed the characters.
But the modern updates they gave it such as establishing more romantic chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, to giving the stepmother a bit more a background whilst making her a juxtaposition to Cinderella’s character, etc. all of the changes made sense and paid homage to the original story. The changes didn’t take away from the original story and message but rather built upon it and improved it.

The creators gave the characters depth, strengths and weaknesses; they wrote while honoring the previous lives these characters had while keeping them in the modern world. They understood that the messaging: family, love, self-acceptance and forgiving others despite the hatred and hurt you've lived with your whole life.
I'm sure Kenneth or another exceptional director could in the near future create a rewrite of Snow White and the Evil Queen. When the queen's hurt began, to the events that happens in Snow White film 1939, to the point when the prince defeats the Queen. And we see a different outcome at the end when they get married, Snow turns her head to the crowd and smiles. Her adoptive Evil mother from the background nods, and she mouths out 'Thank you, Snow. I'm sorry for everything my dear'

I cannot remember the video at the moment but someone did a video essay on Snow White through the eyes of what the USA wanted people to be like during a time of war. Snow is proactive, hard working and a little gullible. It was quite insightful. This is another take that makes just as much sense but from a different angle!

Imagine having a wonderful first Date anxiously awaiting the second only to find out your date died. Even if it wasn't love at first site, it's a loss of love that could have been.

Idk, that ending is more "dark" than it's letting on, at least to me. The Prince may have been real in the beginning, but at the end I think he is just a stand in/metaphor for an "angel" taking SW away to a "better place". The whole premise is that SW is too pure for this world, doing her best she could in difficult situations. And even though she did earn the love of 7 strangers and the prince, she technically did die at the end. Her reward is eternal life in a "heavenly kingdom" which is shown at the end. That's my interpertation. Also considering she did pray at one point to an invisible being.
Another funny misstep that people make about the original movie is the idea that it perpetuated "True Loves Kiss" when in actual fact, it's "Love's First Kiss" that awakes her.
The evil queen even researches this just after making the apple.
So you could technically argue that Snow's and Prince Florian's relationship is more like a first crush than a fully developed relationship.

Corporations are evil and have little understanding of human nature, good storytelling, and ethics so they try to imitate it but it comes off as an alien attempting to understand humanity. The audience wants strong female characters? Oh okay, have the women fight with swords and punch every man they see and loudly proclaim they don't need no man.
To bring up the “Snow White Praying” scene. It’s very likely that Catholicism or Christianity in general is the main religion in the story.
It’s actually common for fairytales, folklores, and even epic stories to include religion.
King Arthur’s story includes both Christian and Pagan themes and Dante’s Inferno had both Biblical and Greek Myth figures in Hell.
Also, it can show the difference between Snow White (a good Christian woman) and Evil Queen (An wicked Witch)
Medieval Europe was mostly Catholic, too, right? So it fits.
I wouldn't be surprised if Snow is represented as Catholic. Seeing as it's a German story and that for a long while, Germany was the Holy Roman Empire. It's interesting to think on.
It's nice to see more people actually covering the strengths of Snow White's character. Heck, if they were going to try to go with a more modern girlboss take, they should take her kindness, optimism and willingness to work hard as the reason why she's a more worthy leader than the queen. The queen is too vain and self serving to rule, so having someone whose actually worked and earned the respect of the people i.e. the dwarves would make sense.

The crazy thing is, they did it right with Cinderella. They added a few scenes that elevated the whole story. I think Snow White would be great if more scenes with the Prince and relationship built-up was shown before Snow White gets exiled.
Here's me rambling a bit about it:
Establishing scene of the stepmother being evil and vain, killing the King probably with a posion apple like a chekovs gun and having to deal with her stepdaughter who's an adorable little girl.
We get a montage of how the Princess is growing up and that the little girl turns into a beauty.
She and the Prince probably meet up a few times in between the montage which would establish their chemistry and him wanting to seek her out.
They grow up and the evil Queen gets news that Snow White is the new beauty in town.
Outraged, she sends a huntsman to take the girl to the forest
Perhaps she was talking with the Prince when he took her away.
The classic story happens with Snow White
Meanwhile The Prince waits for her to come back, but when she doesn't he confronts the Queen and she locks him up in the dungeon
The Step Mother realizes the heart the huntsman brought is not Snow White's and is very outraged
She makes the plan, yada yada and leaves the castle
Maybe there's a battle there, where the Princes loyal guards help him out of the dungeon and he rushes out in the forest to find Snow White but it's too late, she's in the crystal tomb.
Feeling overwhelmed with emotion and his love for Snow White he kisses her one last time and is amazed when she wakes up
They live happily ever after

I do believe in one of the tellings Snow White and the prince were already acquainted by the time that the Evil Queen entered the picture. Some of your idea I can get behind though it does start to sound a lot like Sleeping Beauty by the end so it could use a little fine tuning.
@@lindaschreifels9889 Actually, the Snow White Prince being stuck in the dungeon is an cut storyboard from the original Disney movie. But yeah, I think showing a bit more of the prince with Snow White and getting their chemistry established a bit more is what's missing.

These are great ideas! That’s the thing about remaking the original that was great about the 2015 Cinderella. First and foremost the director writers and actors obviously unlike here with Snow White seemed to enjoy the original film and understood is purpose and message as well as enjoyed the characters.
But the modern updates they gave it such as establishing more romantic chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, to giving the stepmother a bit more a background whilst making her a juxtaposition to Cinderella’s character, etc. all of the changes made sense and paid homage to the original story. The changes didn’t take away from the original story and message but rather built upon it and improved it.
These changes you proposed will enhance the story. Disney should hire you!
My favorite take on The Kiss is that the Prince was kissing his friend/love goodbye. There are cases of men being creepy with women's dead bodies (look up the history of the CPR dummy for a brief example) but this was clearly not one of those cases. He was obviously mourning her, just as much as everyone else, and even paid respects when he knelt down.
He was meant to be looking for her for the whole movie, but this was cut because, simply put, his design was too hard on the animators. He was looking for her, and when he finally found her, he thought she was dead. He was kissing her goodbye.
0:11 I say the reasoning of becoming an old woman is as being Snow White's step mother, the Evil Queen knows of Snow's good heart. She knows that Snow would most definitely be kind to some "sweet little old lady" which would make it so much easier for the Evil Queen to get to her without suspicions. While there are better ways she could've done as a witch, the Queen basically used Snow's kindness to her advantage.
I think a core issue with a lot of the Snow White criticism is that people act like she needs to represent what every girl should aspire to be. Should every woman be quiet, gentle, positive, and enjoy a domestic “tradwife” lifestyle? No. But that’s who Snow White is, and how is that bad? She doesn’t need to be a role model for every single girl in the world. She’s just one character.
I don’t think tradwife lifestyle would be problematic if men were more appreciative and supportive of women in general, rather than seeking to control them to help prop up their own fragile egos. I’m aware that’s not the case in all tradwife set ups, but I am so bloody wary of all these messages popping up to encourage women to be the very things a lot of men openly admit they see as weak.
We still get blamed for the bad stuff that happens to us when we are feminine etc.
I liked the original Snow White, and while I don’t hate traditional feminine qualities, I’d rather be the Mother of Dragons from Game of Thrones, if I had to choose.
As a man who enjoyed Disney films as a child, Snow White always seemed to me much "stronger" than many male superheroes. She had no super powers or weapons, and she was being chased by a queen who at the same time was a witch, that is, an enemy 100x more powerful than her, but still, she didn't get desperate, frustrated, she maintained her composure, and most importantly, she maintained her values. This was important to me, because men fight many battles in their lives, but not all battles we can win through brute force. Hollywood seems to have forgotten that punching enemies isn't the only form of "strength" a character can have. I worry about what the values and ideals will be of a child who grew up seeing only dumb male characters and female characters obsessed with a poor definition of strength and power.
I agree - too many people only define “strength” as physical, when we are not only physical beings.

I think as we look at Disney in the past I think the sticking with the 1930s story plot would have been more well.

Today we call this gaslighting. And thankfully Snow, Prince Charming, Emma, and the Evil Queen got redeemed and forgave each other. In real life this would be very rare, sometimes abusers will not take full accountability for their actions, not redeemed, not loved.
All Regina wanted is the same goal as everyone else's to be loved, accepted and have a family. That facade of evilness is broken up over time, thanks to Henry's love, and the townspeople finally accepting her at the end.

What really makes me angry with people defending the remakes concept is they blatantly are taking the original film and story literally/ realistically with out stepping back and realizing, Hey, it's a fairytale. Fairytale stories aren't meant to be realistic in fact that's the entire point of a fairytale. escaping from reality.
Snow white is supposed to be hyper feminie, caring, maybe a tad naïve but She's a good character. She doesn't need to be head strong or 'girl boss' because that never was the point of her story. It's supposed to be about love at first sight too, a common trope in fairy tales even today. if the story was meant to be realistic in any capacity Snow white wouldn't of sung an entire song calling the prince handsome, romantic and essentially fantasying about him coming to take her away from her troubles.
It's like people watched the original film, erased all context from their minds and said "Omg it's such an unrealistic film". It's like watching Alice n wonderland and being upset everything is nonsense when that's the entire point. It's a fantasy for girls of all ages, nothing more, nothing less. I just don't understand how we let these people into the cinema business. If you want realistic? watch a documentary.
Yeah, people don't understand that there is an art to storytelling. And it should be believable and consistent within the lore of the story, but it's not going to be "realistic."
Also, a good story isn't just an escape. Sure, it should have a surface level fun story to enjoy, but a well written story will also have a deeper meaning and themes to think about.
When I think of escapism in the context of these stories, I think of how it must've been like to be an average girl during the time of the fairy tales (or even the movies). There are, to this day, many, many cinderellas and snow whites out there, with terrible guardians and no possibility of escaping unless a miracle occurs. Heck, my grandma had a similar story, down to being the maid of her foster family until she ran away with my grandpa and they had their happily ever after. She had no other option because most people aren't privileged enough to choose, but leave it to out of touch hollywood elites to forget how the real world is like.
Hell, even I as a kid went back to these movies not just because they were entertaining, but because they told me that if I stayed kind and optimistic, good things would happen. And they have! It's far more empowering than any of these entitled, rude, fake girlbosses, but I digress.
Especially considering this was out during the Great Depression. People back then didn't need realism - they needed escapism.
And a fantasy/fairy tale story about an optimistic, absolute sweetheart of a princess making it through tough times probably made things a lot less bleak.
It's not above criticism, sure, but I feel it's ridiculous to criticize it without even taking in the whole context behind the original.
Now I'm imagining Alice going through Wonderland, having rational conversations with everyone, being happy there's absolutely no logical fallacies or cognitive dissonance to be found, and then waking up and going about her day.
Snow White was 14. This wasn't a love story. It's a story about a young girl who is abused by her mom.
Well, you don't have to agree with the choices the storytellers made, but she did fall in love with the prince. So their love was at least a part of this story

Honestly, Snow White is the most misunderstood princess by our modern society. Like Cinderella, she was an abuse victim who didn't have a lot of options. Of course, she's going to dream of love and being loved. Moreover, just because she is kind and doesn't scream or threaten doesn't mean she's passive or submissive. She had a very motherly approach including being stern and it was all for the better. And the Evil Queen tricking her doesn't make her dumb. Lots of smart people get taken advantage of when being kind because some people are just that twisted.
Feminists always make me laugh. Ignoring the constant victim blaming, there are MANY Disney ladies who are actually more fitting of the "damsel" label. This isn't even all of them but I will list some females who get in more actual danger than the original princesses, especially Cinderella (who wasn't even a damsel as she was not in danger at all):
Jasmine from Aladdin. Take the slavery to Jafar, hourglass problem, and the many times she gets captured in the TV series and, yeah. Damsel.
Mulan: Her going to war automatically puts her in danger. If she didn't blow up Shan Yu with fireworks, and was weak and hadn't mastered her skills, she wouldn't have survived a SECOND.
Belle: Attacked by wolves, Gaston chases after her, in the Christmas movie she almost drowns.
Rapunzel from Tangled. Literally a hostage the whole movie, gets actaully tied up at one point, and again in the TV series she gets captured a few times.
Jane from Tarzan. The original movie she is not proactive, the sequel Tarzan and Jane has her kidnapped by Bobby, and the TV series has her kidnapped several times.
Esmeralda from Hunchback: Hmmm. She spends the whole movie in jeopardy. Persecuted for her race? Yup! Chased after by a man who wants her dead but also as his bride? Yup!
Kida from Atlantis: In the first movie, Rourke and Helga threaten to kill her. Then she's taken away in crystalized form on their zeppelin and almost gets blown up when Helga shoots it. Then in Milo's Return, the entire gang including her are almost blown up AGAIN, and then she gets kidnapped by a crazy man who thinks he's a god and she's his Viking daughter. Kida is overpowered surprisingly easily.
EVERY heroine from the Peter Pan duology: Wendy spends one half of the movie being attacked, either by Tink or the mermaids. The other half, she's Hook's hostage. Tink and Tiger Lily are also victims of Hook. Wendy's DAUGHTER becomes a victim of Hook in Return to Neverland.
Jenny from Oliver and Company: Kidnapped by Sykes and almost fed to his dogs.
Penny from The Rescuers: Kidnapped by Medusa.
Meg from Hercules: Kidnapped by Hades and then dropped into a death cavern.
Olivia from Great Mouse Detective: Kidnapped by Ratigan TWICE.
Anna and Elsa from Frozen: Anna almost dies when she has to jump off a cliff to escape the snow monster, and is left to die by Hans. Elsa is attacked by Hans' guards and then locked in jail.
These are DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, but the feminists say very little about the Peter Pan girls and say nothing or applaud every other girl for being strong, and others they don't even know exist.
What I like about Snow White is that she could have been a victim, but she refused to be one! She always made the best of her situation.

I will argue against Mulan because your point for her is more of a "What If" situation and not actually what ended up happening in the movie, which is very unfair.
The most important part of The Damsel in Distress trope isn't about just being in danger, it's about being saved from the danger. While yes, Mulan is actively in danger, she didn't need to be saved by someone especially in the climax of the movie. Which doesn't make her a damsel.
Also, your point on Rapunzel is a bit hypocritical when you take into account Cinderella was also locked in a room and needed help from her animal friends (which does, in fact, make her Damsel)
Back on Cinderella, while she does need help being saved in the first film. Since you brought up sequels, Cinderella 3 is a good example of her saving herself. So she wasn't a Damsel (I didn't bring up 2 because nothing of note happens in there). But she is in one. And so are Snow White and Aurora, AND THATS NOT A BAD THING.
And trust me, as a Peter Pan fan, THEY DO talk about Wendy. Just not to the same capacity because she's not a Disney Princess and hence, not in the constant spotlight. Peter Pan fans are usually very good at shutting down arguments against Wendy by bringing up that Wendy is a child.
Jane gets a pass because she's shown for majority of the movie to be a very capable and clever girl, even rescuing Peter and the Lost Boys from Hook after she got them captured. That moment where she's in real danger with Hook and Peter needed to save her was short and not nearly as important as the scene leading up to her rescuing Peter and the Lost Boys. If anyone was the Damsel in Return to Neverland, it's Peter Pan himself 😂.
And because Jane is a sequel character that came directly after Wendy, "Feminists" would be more forgiving to Jane's character as they would see her as an "improvement" from Wendy.
I love Wendy and Jane for different reasons and I don't see any of them being an improvement from the other.
Also there should be nothing wrong about being a damsel in distress... at all... That there is actual danger and you fear for their life is good story telling.

Even in the 1950 original you can see that a later compliment of equating Cinderella with Belle was valid because she's both smart and awake. Prince Charming does way more in three than he ever did in the original+ it was King Maximillian who ordered the shoe search, not the prince.

AMVs are a great place to find new music! If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be between Hand of Sorrow and Our Solemn Hour. (But Bittersweet gets an honorable mention)
In the original fairy tale the queen does try to kill Snow White multiple times besides the apple and the huntsmen. A poisoned comb is used as is a corset that constricts her breathing. Walt took those out because he felt that it would make Snow look like an idiot to be tricked that often. Also, thank you for this wonderful defense of Snow White.
Something that scares me about snow white is that the evil queen is more relevant than ever in this social media world. It's creepy how similar they are. She sees competition in others and attack Sbow white for existing while being superficial, only caring about herself. Meanwhile, Snow White isn't really gullible, she's just innocent. Innocent people will always give evil people a chance and regret it later. Remaining optimistic and seeing the good in people even after betrayal and abuse is really hard. It takes resilience a lot people lack, instead they become bitter and awful, thinking this will be safer for them. Snow white is powerful.

Snow White is the kind of person I aspire to be. She’s brave in the face of adversity and kind to all people. Most of all, I love her gentleness and softness. I do hate how people make fun of her for being soft and crying. Uh, hello? Getting upset and crying when you’re overwhelmed or scared is part of being human. Being soft is also a truly hard characteristic to keep in a cynical and cruel world, and she maintains it. Cinderella snow white. These people speak like the princes are the villains of the story. And it so funny how there people forget the princess has goals. Not needed a man. Cinderella wants to go to the ball. Rapunzel wants to see the lanterns 'Tiana wants her own restaurant. When did anyone say they wanted true love. The only character who wanted that is anna.

Finally more and more people understand what Disney Snow White is showing. It’s non-sense to say dreaming for true love and hardworking are weak. Although she doesn’t fight with sword, she chose to die instead of following hook even she was so scared. Physical strength and power doesn’t make you a strong female. Mirror Mirror was an excellent adaption. Everything about it was beautiful--the actors, the costumes, the cinematography, and the modern feminist twist was like the cherry on top of the sundae--they had Snow White fight with a sword and rescue the man but she didn't lose any of her gentle compassionate nature. Meanwhile, the "official" snow white disney live action film can't even bother to hire a talented cast, the costumes look like 50% discounted Halloween costumes, atrocious CGI dwarves, and the writing will probably be downright awful considering the only thing good thing they can say about the film is how feminist it is.

Usually, if someone WANTS power, its a sign they probably should not have it. The best leaders are those who don't really want the position, but do it anyway for the benefit of those around them, because they know its the right thing to do.
What I find interesting is the Queen seems to have a weird sense of "honor" when it comes to being the fairest, like she's willing to kill the competition but not adjust her own looks. Maybe that speaks to her vanity that she can't imagine improving her own looks.
Also I like the detail of her faking a heart attack to have Snow White invite her in, strange old lady is one thing, strange old lady with a heart condition is another. It actaully upset me when Cinderella did this with the Fairy godmother and Beauty and the Beast did it with the Enchantress (Original left some ambiguity, remake did not).
14:40 OH it was much worst in the original draft that's where the Queen sent suitors that rejected her proposals, including the Prince. Poor guy had his storyline removed and divided between Charming and Philip.
The reason why she was praying is because back in the early to late 1900s, Christianity was a big part of American culture. These days, sadly not so much.

Even though there are Christian values in the story, it's not specified who she's praying to. And, just the act of praying without understanding who you're praying to and why is kind of pointless. But hey, to your point, those things might have just been common knowledge back then.

I like how all the clips you showed of Disney characters demanding power were all villains. Heroes earn power and villains covet power. Look at Ganondorf. He does not run for office in Hyrule and prove his competence as a leader, he just uses his dark magic and demonic minions to take it by force.

Oh boy, where to begin? I guess I'll start with a brief note that the kiss being nonconsensual is so absurd it's almost funny. It's clearly established in the opening scenes of the film that Snow White and the prince were already in love with one another, so there's no reason to think she would've consented to him kissing her, even while unconscious (and especially if she knew it was necessary to break the spell). Later in the film, it's further confirmed when the Queen in her disguise, aware of Snow White's romance with the prince, suggests she makes a wish related to that before biting into the "magic wishing apple." Snow White then follows this up with a wish to be reunited with the prince before biting into the poison apple and falling under its spell. This is actually an improvement from the original Grimms' fairy tale, and perhaps Disney even saw how problematic it was to have the prince kiss her at random without them already being in love (even though it was the 1930s).
Second, the Queen is actually an excellent example of toxic femininity at work. She was so vain and petty that she couldn't stand the idea of any woman in the kingdom being better looking than her, including her own stepdaughter. A lot of real life women can act the same way, working as hard as they can to tear down women whose appearance and/or success they envy. (One good example of this is all the overtly sexist and misogynistic attacks that left-wing women made on Sarah Palin during and after America's 2008 presidential campaign.) But in the film, the Queen's obsession with outer beauty comes at the expense of inner beauty, which ultimately reveals itself on the outside after she transforms herself into a hideous, ugly old hag. (This makes it all the more ironic when Snow White falls under the spell and the Queen, still in disguise, cackles maniacally and declares that she will now be the fairest in the land.)
Third and perhaps most importantly, rescuing someone that can't rescue themselves isn't sexist as long as it's equal opportunity and applies to both sexes. That's just part of being a good person. I am a cisgender, heterosexual male myself and would absolutely come to the aid of a woman in need, but guess what? I would absolutely come to the aid of another man in need, too. (Also, I would never, ever, EVER lay a finger on a woman without her consent, but I digress. See, wokesters? We AREN'T all a bunch of toxic, sexist, misognyistic sex predators who objectify women.) In the case of the film, the huntsman refused to kill her because he's not a murderer at heart and doesn't kill innocent people. When he warns Snow White that her stepmother wants her dead, she follows his orders to flee to the forest and never return to the castle. She gets terrified while traversing the woods, though, and eventually collapses in her fear. When the forest animals find her, she realizes that she didn't need to be afraid and she could be brave and strong despite the danger she was in. So the idea that she wasn't strong enough is also hogwash. She wasn't weak, she was simply afraid, and who wouldn't be given her circumstances?
The fact that random TH-camrs like us understand Disney princess films better than Disney themselves does, and that Disney listens to the attacks from people who DON'T understand them, is really a sad commentary on the state of society and pop culture in the present day. If more people just watched these films closely again, then they would realize that none of these attacks hold any water at all.
You know what the moral Snow White to me is? You can find your people, you CAN get out of the terrible situation and you’ll find a group that actually cares about you. You don’t have to change who you are, you don’t have to heal alone. That’s why she’s my favorite, the prince is nice I guess, but it’s her friends that save her first. Thank you for making this video

I'm tired of people being against sexism while at the same time being sexist. The "women can be whatever they want" only works when the woman is not feminine. Old feminism was about accepting every type of woman, the masculine AND the feminine. A woman is not inferior just because she chooses to have a partner and a family. Male characters have a partner, sometimes multiple partners, and are not seen as less.
In my opinion, is nice having more female characters that are not focused on romance, as a woman who believes she is on the aromantic spectrum i actually like that. But people, there must be balance! not every female character needs to be weak, not every female character needs to be strong. Don't put them on a box of "they can only be feminine" or "they can only be masculine"
Let female characters variate the same way as male characters!
The important thing to remember is that in 1937, the Great Depression was in full swing and the threat of WW2 was around the corner. So Snow White being hardworking, positive in the face of adversity, and putting on a brave face despite the existential threat looming out there for her was extremely relevant to the folks watching her in theaters. American and European audiences needed a plucky heroine with a can-do attitude and general cheeriness -- not a sword-wielding badass. It's sort of funny that as we descend further into a recession and as the threat of a global conflict becomes more and more real, Disney is trying to bash Snow White rather than just capitalize on her classic charm in a new century.
It's amazing that Snow White still holds up. I wonder how much people will remember Ziegler Snow White? I also like how Disney approves actors trashing the movie that put them on the map. XD

I have another anecdote about snow white at Disney world. So about a year or two before he passed away my grandfather who saw Snow White in theaters went with us to Disney world. We were able to get him into a line to meet Snow White and he got to tell her that he's loved her since the 30s and the actress did a perfect job!
Fun anecdotes aside, yes every feminist deconstruction of Disney princesses usually miss the point entirely. Peter Pan might be my favorite Disney movie, but I find value in the storytelling of the princess movies.

I am going to say this before anyone bring up the supposely large age cap since...it doesn't exist. Well not exactly.
Basically, in the DRAFT of snow white, it was said that snow white character model was inspired Janet Gaynor were she could possibly be 14 years old. And that the prince was inspired by Douglas Fairbanks and he would be 18 years old. And that was written in the book called the art of Walt Disney.
But because it was only a draft, thing changed from that to the final product. At the end, Snow white model was more influence by her voice actress Adriana Caselotti who was around 20 and the prince took after his voice actor Harry stockwell who was around 30. So that probably were the misconception came from.
People took Snow white age from the draft were it was said she would be 14. And for the prince age, they probably used his voice actor age. And people took it as a fact. Despite the age never been officially confirmed. This is a perfect case of the telephone game.

Nobody break their feets to get into cinderella glass shoes. Aurora doesn't get pregnant with twins. Ariel doesn't die at the end. Elsa doesn't become a villain and etc. Plus, fairy tale, the original, are suppose to be horrible and cruel and lowkey disgusting. They are meant to warn off kids and anyone who hear them to not follow bad influence and to be good.
Considering snow white was written in 1812 it probably was actual mummy dust, ik it was all the rage in the victorian era which started a couple decades later but i wouldnt be surprised if it was popular before hand but idk for sure

I’m not a girlfriend or wife to anyone, but I do clean as a job and while most people appreciate what cleaners do, there’s definitely people who look down on it and those who do other things they don’t want to (or even do want to, but can’t). It’s a form of arrogance, I think.
The praying thing might be because of the 1930s and Christianity, but perhaps Disney was trying to inject some historical accuracy? Princesses in the 16th century would have been staunch Catholics (for the most part). It's just a guess 🤷♀️

I always thought the reason why the mirror says Snow White is prettier is because she’s beautiful on the outside and the inside, also originally there would be more scenes about her and the prince developing their relationship but because of how hard animation is and the time they had to finish it and for the movie to not be too long they cut it

The old school princesses all share one treat and that is optimism. Cinderella is kind to everyone, even to the smallest mice. Snow is compassionate to the dwarfs, animals and even to the evil queen. Aurora was a heart so big. You can find a good in the strangest places.

If I remember correctly, some previous Live Action Disney Princesses like Elle Fanning (Sleeping Beauty), Naomi Scott (Jasmine) and Lily James (Cinderella) actually were the ones who appreciated and truely loves the Original Princesses they're going to act, while also celebrating their charms with an extra matureness and modern-idea as well. Which is why these examples were the Live Actiobs which were actually really good!
In terms of Snow White though..... not only the actress doesn't even capture the beauty and sweetness of the original, but even mocks the character she's meant to play as old fashioned. Seriously, I have nothing good things to say about this actress.

I try to ignore what actors talk about as far as views on a film just because it’s never them. It’s the education that they lack about the media they consume and not having a lot of support from the studios by putting these folks on the visual chopping block. This is nothing new, but I do appreciate when media like this can acknowledge the good and the bad.

rachel never said the original snow white wasn’t “enough of this” or “enough of that” so i think you have it wrong in that aspect. the main point that she’s getting across in her interviews is the fact that the live action is going to lean into certain parts of the story and snow white’s power MORE because they weren’t fully explored in the original. she isn’t at all insinuating that the original princess was weak.

And Cinderella in the sequels is great. In the second one, she has flaws. The first part is about her going through princess training and giving into pressure to BE perfect, but she defies those rules and does it her way. She even forgives Anastasia and helps her get a boy she likes because Cindy tries to see the good and looks for the good in everyone. She didn't come out bitter. And in the third movie, she escapes the pumpkin herself when she's being driven off a mountain.
