I been watching your videos for some time now and I have to say its helped me in my day to day work so thank you. And keep up the great work Matthew from London
I still make videos when I can, but my videos do not get the views they used to. Perhaps this is the reason why- th-cam.com/video/7wFqblQY6Dk/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the comment 👍
Excellent. Roll on next week. I've got 2 Boss' to fit and that video will be super useful just as all of your other videos are. You explain everything so well and give great tips and recommendations. Thanks :-)
There are still plenty of cast iron soil stacks about, hopefully this video will help some people. In next weeks video I’ll show how to install a mechanical boss. Please like, share and comment 😉 I hope everyone has a great Sunday!
Most plumbers’ merchants will sell them, or screwfix- www.screwfix.com/p/mcalpine-mechanical-pipe-boss-connector-black-40mm/55722 Apparently, you can also get a special one, specifically for cast iron now, although not all places stock them.
Good video, thanks. I especially liked the useful bits about removing the saw while drilling the pilot hole, using coolant and removing any ejector springs. By the way, what was the coolant you used?
I don’t think I reversed direction, perhaps it’s an optical illusion, like when you watch some movies and the wheels look like they are going backwards?
The hole saw used in this video requires an arbor, which is purchased separately. The pilot drills used in the arbor, are normally a special length and some of them have a flat on the end, so that the grub screw in the arbor can grip it. Thanks for the comment 👍
Desperately looking for a 57mm bung to cover this hole. Please can anyone help with where to buy from. I have looked online but no joy. Many thanks in advance.
Thanks for the video, unfortunately I am having trouble drilling a cast iron pipe the same as this, I have tried a 57 mm Bi Metal Erbauer hole saw from Screwfix and then a 57 mm Abracs Cobalt hole saw from Toolstation, and have been drilling for nearly 2 hours. Only about half way through, have you got any suggestions please. Thanks
The only thing I can think of, is the quality of the hole saw? I used Starrett hole-saws, which are of decent quality. I would have thought that a cobalt hole saw would have cut through the pipe though! Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman I ordered a Starrett but it arrived too late, so I bought a 57mm Bosch hole saw at Screwfix and it did the job and went through it like butter. Thanks again.
I asked the plumbing "expert" at the local home depot about a mechanical boss, and even explained that I saw it on this exact video, the man looked at me like I was just making shit up😂
Please provide information for the mechanical boss as l am currently involved in this project and have been unable to locate the boss. Might il have the name and source of the boss? Best regards.
What's the plumbing piece you put on the cast iron pipe called ? I'm going to be connecting a PVC pipe just like you did but not sure what that part is called. Thnx
Thanks a lot sir for all your constructive tips and recommandations and also this vid helps me a lot! Are you happy with de AEG drill driver? I am intend to buy one of these here in the Netherlands.
You are welcome. The AEG drill/driver is absolutely superb. The 4AH batteries last ages before they need re-charging and the drill itself is comfortable to hold and is very powerful, it is one of the best 18v drills I have ever used (I've used Dewalt, Ryobi, Hitachi and Bosch). Thanks for the comment
No, I think you would need to cut the pipe in half, remove a small section and insert a branch, similar to this- www.rainclear.co.uk/lcc-cast-iron-soil-112-branch-100mm-transit-primer-5161.html
Not into a cast iron pipe, unless it's huge. Normally to connect to a cast iron waste pipe, you would have to cut it and insert a fitting. Thanks for the comment 👍
Almost went through 2 hole saws before I realised you have to do this REALLY SLOWLY, i.e. as slow a rotation speed on your drill as possible without stalling it. On a very fast speed the saw teeth will just grind out on cast iron in a matter of seconds. SLOW SPEED IS THE KEY.
I want to add a laundry sink, and the easiest way is to break into the cast iron stack. That method would make it easier, if we can do it on this side or the pond. I will do a quick check on if we can and post it. Looking forward to the next one.
This is the most deceptive video I’ve seen on TH-cam After watching it I purchased the exact holesaw on Amazon I used a quality dewalt mains powered drill on my cast iron waste pipe exactly the same one as the video and it was absolutely useless I’m sending it back to via Amazon What’s annoyed me most is the waste of my time
@@ultimatehandyman Actually having tried it with a high powered plug in dewalt drill I’d say it was definitely impossible with a cordless drill you’ve obviously doctored the video I don’t know your motives I suspect you are sponsored by the company or I’ve got an exceptionally tough cast iron waste pipe all I know for certain is this particular holesaw was absolutely useless I spent hours trying to get through
Rather than concocting “doctored videos” nonsense, perhaps you could have approached this in a different way, in which case my answer would have been “you should contact Starrett and let them know that their hole saw does not work”. Perhaps it’s a faulty batch and they need to investigate! Perhaps it’s a snide copy of a genuine Starrett hole saw.

Glad to hear!
What kind of connection would you use if you wanted connect a new vent to an old vent??
Just the video i was looking for 👍 did you have the drill on hammer action or just normal drilling mode?
No, do not use hammer action, it will ruin the hole saw!

Does the hole saw come with the pilot drill and Arbor, or do you buy it all seperately, are pilot drills the same as ordinary drill bits.
The hole saw used in this video requires an arbor, which is purchased separately.

I’m not familiar with that brand, but most holesaws will work, as long as it’s not a pound shop one, and used at a slow speed.

Just be patient and make sure to use a handle like he did in the video. Your wrists might hurt a bit if that drill kicks lol
I have 1/4" round stock in my hole saws.
They are the ones where you need to drill a pilot hole first, then you can use the hole saw and arbor

His answer may be based on where he lives. Geneco and Fernco make saddles for sizes upto 8". And Oatey makes kits for schedule 40.
I want to add a laundry sink, and the easiest way is to break into the cast iron stack.
That method would make it easier, if we can do it on this side or the pond.

These are widely used in the UK though.
