Real lifesaver. Me and my dad were redoing the plumbing in my grandmas basement and couldn’t figure out how to connect the pvc to the cast iron pipes. This was the only video that wasn’t a million years long and went into depth about the peices. Thanks a million 🙏🙏🙏
So now you know how to do it wrong.
Me and whom? Or Dad and I?
Currently doing my bathroom, complete reno. I have an existing 4 inch cast drain for the toilet. I need to scale that down where it meets the toilet to a 3 inch. This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
You are welcome!
During my apprentice plumbing training with the union. I wanted to give u a tip you do not sand the outside of the PVC pipe just the end where u cut the pipe wipe of excess with your hand. The part if cleaning cast iron was a good job.
Thanks for the info
uh oh !
Been there, done that! From main septic line to tank. It's the correct way to couple these different types of pipe. Works flawlessly!
thanks for watching!
can i use this from galvanized to pvc???
Absolutely the wrong connection! Do not do this!!! 35+ year plumber here. Use an ARC band or metal sheathed coupler.
@@jackspade2576 the hell there goi g to unleash of the rubber is pierced 😅😅
@@jackspade2576 If somebody was to use a rotary tool or metal snake on this afterwards, and it pierces the rubber boot connection, this all has to be ripped back out. Get the ARC band or "hard inner sheath" coupler like you say.
They should have used a powered auger to loosen up the debris. As others have said, it could have been done from the beginning of the video. Replacing intact metal pipe with a rubber boot is asking for disaster.
Great video, I always use a wire wheel on a high-speed grinder, really takes it down to clean metal.

Hello . Great work .
I just finished a similar connection. Im getting some sweating near the band connection. Do you have suggestions how to eliminate that.
Thanks
1. As a contractor, I have never worked on flip flops.
2. You need a fernco banded fitting
Great video, please more about main drain pipes under ground basements thanks
Thanks!
that lexible driver was useless for this since u got plenty of space already. but its nice to know its available
Very good information
Thanks for watching!
No it's not good information
What is the make a model of the reciprocating saw and nut driver? Thank you for taking the time to make this install video.
I use Ryobi. Not sure about the model
Would this coupling work under pressure? For example. I need to connect a PVC sprinkler pipe to a cast iron existing pipe. I just wonder if this coupling will handle to pressure from a sprinkler system. I hope it will because this looks like a solution for me.
Not the ones I used. The couplings you see in this video are only for sewer, drain, waste and vent piping...
Good job. Liked how you cleaned your cast iron pipe. Thanks!

Hi there, great video. quick question. I have installed permanent connection to my RV to my sewer line beside the house that leads to the city line. I have installed sewer pump to pump it better, my question is, should keep the black and gray valve ON all the time, if not why not? thanks
Are those connections code when in contact with ground?
From my research, fernco connections are not code for ground contact.
Unshielded fernco is not code. Fernco is fine under ground but needs to be shielded no hub. If he had his work inspected as he should have, he would have failed his inspection
From Fernco website: Fernco Couplings designed for above or below ground use.

Can I do that just cutting like 10 inches of cast iron, without going that deep ?
Thank you
you should have put concrete around the furnco I have dug up to many that have settled and screws up the flow line.

Very nice. I have used those rubber connectors. I do worry about them sometimes especially when underground. Would be nice not to cover with dirt giving some access. Thanks

How much torque are you using with your torque wrench? 80lbs? 60lbs?

Thank you for your video! What size coupling do I need for a 2 inch OD cast-iron pipe? I wondered if the coupling needed to be bigger fit over the pipe. Thank you
you need 2 inch coupling
@@CreativeProcessDIY do they have those coulings in 3/4 or 1/2??
Great video. The steel pipe is almost gone in his diameter.
Nice and clean and simple the way it should be
Thanks a lot
Use the tools you have, but snaking that drain with a rotary tool would have been a better choice for cleaning it out. Some places have code that says the primer has to stick out at least an inch along the exposed sections of pipes (more in some jurisdictions).
That flexible nut driver was really cool to see in action though! Nice job showing enough of the project to make the whole thing approachable while staying focused on what I came here for. Thanks
thanks
I was thinking the same thing. I would sat there and ran a snake up there as far as I could with a snake tool since it is open.
primer has to stick up an inch or more? I'm calling it on that one. Waste of primer, no reason to, looks unprofessional. What jurisdictions require this? Bet this is an inspector peeve if true.
And now im a 😂plumber ! ❤for real awesome video major likes 👍 👌
thanks for watching!
That’s easily a 500$-1000$ job 🤫
Is it possible to overtightened the rubber coupling? I used an impact drill with a 5/16th driver. Should I loosen it a little?
You will feel it when it is enough....
I'm an old man with old man hands, arthritis, etc. I use a nut driver, not a wrench, and tighten it up as snug as I can get it, then wait and do it again in 20 or so minutes after the rubber and the drive band get "cozy". For stuff that gets buried I prefer the couplings with the stainless steel shields, e.g. a Fernco Proflex. There is an 8mm t-handle torque wrench, or 5/16" depending on the brand of coupler, to use with these fittings, I just use a nut driver. If the fittings are hard to get on you can wet them or use a non-petroleum lube, O-ring lube for example. I am not a pro but have never had a fitting leak and have been doing my own DIY repairs 50 years.
Yes it is possible. And once you have over tightened it, such as with a power tool, it will strip and never tighten properly again and must be replaced. Otherwise IT WILL leak. It is best to hand tighten as demonstrated in the video. And, as the author advised above, stop tightening when you feel it is enough, because even then some of us can over tightened it. GOOD PLUMBING!
@@TheTruthAndTheCross Well it's in there now and has been holding for a 2-3 months. I'm not going to touch it. I only hit the trigger a couple times when I couldn't tighten any further by hand. 🔧
@@WinmanDesigner
Well, it is best to replace it when it is first stripped out, but in your case, I hope it holds and never leaks.
So you're just going to berry that rubber adapter?
Yes. Those are underground rated.
Any tips for keeping surface of drain level with floor?
I have a video on my channel how to do it.
When you connected the pvc pipe to the cast iron with the coupling, did the pvc pipe in inside the cast iron pipe or are both pipes the exact size?
They are both the same size
Do you make runescape videos too?
???
My old house has 2-1/2 castiron that is rotten and needs change to ABS (A P segment under the shower). I can't find any 2and half to 2 inches clamp. Where should I search and do I have any other option besides Fernco reducing rubber clip if I find none?
I am not sure about ABS. I did my research only about connecting PVC pipe to cast iron
Since comment is two years old, I’m assuming problem solved. For anyone searching for an answer, here’s what I learned. First, double check your pipe diameter calculation. I thought I needed 4.5 inch CI. Realized my circumference measurement was off causing overstated diameter. While my pipes were slightly larger than 4”, it was a nominal amount and the rubber sleeve fit fine. Other tip is to make sure to clean the outside of CI pipe. Sand away/remove any rust or grime from the coupler seating areas. Lastly make sure you use plenty support straps to keep your pipes in place. When you make your first cut through, any existing torque will be released. You don’t want your piping system bouncing around causing further cracking or torquing.
Hmmmm....I have done exactly that twice to replace a 4" iron elbow. Both times the soil chemistry makes the flexible coupling extremely stiff so the stainless steel ring clamps are not applying friction. Then natural soil movements pull the repair apart.
The shielded version of couplers solve for that. Instead of a rubber sleeve and two hose clamps alone, they also come with stainless steel “shields” that cover the rubber sleeve making it rigid. The added strength keeps your pipes aligned and doesn’t require a soil backfill. It also deters rodents from chewing up the rubber.
How to connect plastic pipe in middle of steel pipe not to leak water and rust resistant
I am doing a very similar job. I am encountering difficulty cleaning the old cast iron pipe so I can slip the Fernco connector over it. You simply scraped yours clean. The rust and scale I am working with are much harder. Did you prep yous prior to scraping and if so, with what?
No, I did not prepare it. It was in such condition.
Use a grinder with an abraisive wheel
Hi is primer and cement needed for the hub?
no
@@CreativeProcessDIY ok thanks for the fast response

when i took off my old kitchen sink pipes underneath...the p trap was sooo corroded, it crumbled in my hand lol. it also took off the end of the other pipe with it :/ fernco coupling saved my ASS and allowed me to connect the broken end to my existing kitchen piping ;D
Great!
I like to use silicon on the French connections
You do not need to use silicone on Fernco couplings.
Advice to DIY homeowners. If you use non shielded couplings backfill with sand to stabilize the pipe. The sag occurs from over excavated trenches that are not properly backfilled. Nothing wrong with DIY. Just DIY the proper way…..

Can connect to metal 2" wall pipe?
sewer pipe?
I see that it's for black water, but can I to a line for an outside faucet? Will the constant water pressure mess with it?
I think rubber Fernco couplings cannot be used for pipes with water pressure.
not code for Pennsylvania. Should be a shielded coupler there bud
we are remodeling the bathroom and my contractor wants to use this coupling to connect plastic and copper pipe under the floor. I was told that they might last 10-15 years. Is it a good idea to do it this way?
are you sure you have a copper pipe under the floor but not the cast iron? what exactly is he trying to do?
Good video!

Why clean the pvc with sand paper?
Great work. I am trying to connect a 2" OD iron drain pipe to the p-trap pipe that will attach to a garbage disposal. My question is, if I buy a coupling tube, how much play can there be when the coupler attaches to the pipe? I am see ing about an 1/8" on either side of the couplers? Is that too much? Will the coupler squeeze enough so there won't be a leak? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
when you buy a coupling you need to be able to attach it to your iron pipe. The better is to have them tight so you can tighten the ring to avoid any leaks in the future. I hope it will help
Congrats on showing people how to do this wrong! You need a stainless jacket banded coupler for under slab work. People shouldn’t make videos unless you know for sure you are doing it right and to code.
must not be in the U.S.
oldowl4290 - the guy said the clamps are stainless steel. When you said a stainless banded coupler is needed for under slab, how is that different from a Fernco rubber coupler with stainless steel clamps? I Googled stainless banded coupler. That brought up various types of images that doesn't make it clear what a stainless banded coupler is. Please tell us more about what a stainless banded coupler looks like.
@@LoneTinaja It has a complete stainless sheet /cylinder jacket around the rubber. The two stainless ring clamps are typically riveted to the stainless sheet / jacket. Because it's made for underground use, the stainless jacket protects the rubber and makes it last longer. You're only supposed to use the type he's using here above grade / above slab.
@@oldowl4290 Thanks for the info. I found photos of that type of coupler. Underground at my house a licensed plumber used Fernco rubber couplers 4 inches in diameter with stainless steel clamps but the rubber is not surrounded by a stainless steel jacket. Do you know how long the rubber will last before it deteriorates to the point that it fails? Are there chemicals in soil that eat away at the rubber? Is it also an issue of soil shifting because of rain that makes soil expand, then soil shrinks during periods of drought? Do those processes cause the soil to abrade the rubber or tear the rubber?
@@LoneTinaja I assume it's code for a good reason and likely similar to your thoughts. That's all I know.
Perfect thank you
You're welcome!

Should of used husky no hub band 4 strap band
Should of used 5/16 bit with drill to tighten up band
you cannot use drill to tighten fernco couplings. you can tighten it up manually. read instructions
That is the incorrect coupler. You should have gotten the stainless jacketed. It prevents the coupler from swelling with heat and slipping off.
Fernco in the ground/slap not code. Use Transition coupling
what code are you referring to?

Was wondering if anybody can help me try and help complete this job, basically looking to install a water filtration system but have cast iron pipe running throughout the house, not copper or plastic. The problem is to install the system I usually use SharkBite or plastic 3/4 or 1in. connections just never had to install a system in a home with galvanized steel or cast iron pipes and plumbing.
Try to thread your galvanized pipe and make a connection. Use Tap and Die Set.

"very fASt" LMAO people using reciprocating saws instead of a grinder on cast iron is hilarious

The fastest I've found is to use a grinder w/a continuous rim diamond blade. No shaking of the pipes upstream that might initiate a leak at the next hub, and..... it cuts fast! Also, less chance of unwanted shattering/breaking of the cast iron you are trying to keep. Absolute control with the diamond blade for a clean, straight, end-cut; if it's not perfect, the diamond blade can trim/grind the merest amount off to make it right. If necessary, and if you are unable to get to the backside of a pipe to make the cut, cut a section out on the front side big enough to get the grinder inside the pipe to continue cutting. Absolutely wear gloves, hearing and eye protection, and a respirator. I showed this trick to my plumber years ago- he'd never heard/seen it done this way; went out immediately afterwards to get some diamond blades...... lol. YMMV
This video settles it for me... th-cam.com/video/ACU1KeVfJa0/w-d-xo.html
@@olliebama9323 I use sawzall with the Diablo thick metal carbide blades. If you know how to use the sawzall you can avoid the vibration. Just my preference.

@@CreativeProcessDIY sorry friend don’t know what country your in but comment is correct the coupling you used has to be protected from rocks debris. There are ones made here in America that have metal sleeves over both ends . It is torqued down with specific lbs on the brackets.
