My Grandad was cut from the same cloth. He was a Fire Chief from the late 50's till 1968, and had a killer shop in the basement, and all kinds of spares and old parts from when the USA used to make quality things people wanted. What a great environment to grow up around!

Cody, just a thought from an old retired pipe fitter. When ever installing a pressure gauge, whether for air, water, or steam, we always installed the gauge vertically using a Pig Tail. The Pig Tail traps air between the gauge and source lessening gauge contamination. and hammering. when your pump cycles. Love your videos, many thanks.

Being an Okie myself and having saved every washer and nut and spring I came across over the last 60 years I could have told you your Grand Dad was an Okie just because he saved every piece of stuff he ever had. I think to people from Oklahoma its an art.
I enjoy your videos and have actually learned from them although I have been living the way you and your Family does for the last 40 years. Keep up the good work because you are helping a lot of people whether they will admit it or not.
Remember to keep God at the fore front in your life and every thing you do, never forget to ask his blessing on you and your family and you will be truly blessed.

The check valves you are using here are designed for horizontal use . Replace the one with a vertical check valve Designed to open vertically. You can get one from your local well driller or pump supply house .

My dad and the guy he purchased his current home from several years ago both each had a nice collection of the exact same types of fasteners and whatnot. Our garage is more like a barn, and it's completely packed full of anything related to manual labor. I find that even though we may have a bunch of a certain part we need, often times we still need to go buy it, as it has become difficult to actually find anything here anymore.

Here's a tip from a plumber, swing checks can be installed vertically but is not advised, especially with frequent opening closing. I suggest a spring check. Added cost but will last longer with less chance of failure.

I really enjoy watching your Ram Pump videos. Great hands on learning/teaching experience. One piece of info that I would love to have, on parts that you do have to purchase, is add in there a word on how much, for example, a new check valve costs. If its a part you are replacing every year, you could buy 5-10 at a time and set them back for future rebuilds.

This seems the most simple and direct configuration for Wear Maintenance of the 'only two moving parts', the Gate Check Valves. Just put a Union Coupler at either end of the two valves assembly, so that the Valves section can be swapped out when required due to wear.

I seen another video where a man used a PVC check valve (has a stainless spring and o-rings). He cut it open after 4 years of use and seen hardly any wear. On your next rebuild you may want to try a PVC check valve. Another option you can experiment with is a stainless steel check valve.

Cody I used to be the boy who swept the floor in the mast building shop at Columbia yachts in the early 70s.Id sweep all the misc stainless steel fittings up off the floor every night,Id put them in a large old wooden chest in the corner to hold them for eternity. Well when Columbia closed dad got to keep that chest full of stainless steel nuts bolts and small fittings. He had the parts, he'd say there has to be just one more in there ,keep lookin. lol,

Cody,i have a spring gravity feed to my house. Has been working great since 1977. But i have an electric pump at the house to increase the pressure, plus pressure tank. Not sure how a ram pump works? Would it increase my pressure? Where should i put it, at the spring? 150 yards from the spring and 20' lower at the house? My electric pump is struggling. have never ran? Or run out of spring water, but the pressure is about half of what it was 20 years ago. Any help would be appreciated. May god continue too bless you and yours.

use K&S Model-making tubing to re-bush it. Use the heavy wall version. Then you can re bush as required. Choose a size that fits a brazing rod slightly larger than the pin size in it. You can then easily replace bushing and pin.

I can relate to the history of your grandad passing those parts to you. My dad did the same.
I wonder if folks have noticed that small plumbing parts, brass especially in faucets, etc. are mostly made in China. I find myself replacing those parts as often as after just a year of service where the originals were American made and lasted 30 years! Some parts I get right from the plumbing store leak right from the beginning. Maybe the QC is crap but there are no American comparable components.

That's pretty cool I always wondered if there was some way of pumping water without using electricity, gasoline, or anything that requires a motor of some type. Just wish the land here wasn't flat so there was some flowing water. lol

  • @TheTomBevis
    @TheTomBevis 9 ปีที่แล้ว

A weight on the valve to let the water in the supply pipe gain more speed before it closes will give you more output pressure, if you need it. A ram pump gets its power from the momentum of the water.

In my experience it would be wise to replace both check valves ,if one is worn the other is probably on the way out as well. The other check valve will definitely give out before the new check valve because of the excess ware .in my opinion I would replace both either with a rebuild or totally replace the entire valves . I am an old steam engineer retired and I still love to dabble in the trade .

I think if you use a stainless steal pin instead of a brass pin you will get less wear. For the same reason in a vehicle transmission you never mesh like gears (materials). Less wear from one metal to the other regardless of how hard or soft. Something to look at.
