Hey! I could resent that! Thing is, those Opinels can be pretty hard to open. My wife is always using mine and I always have to open it for her. I would hesitate to call them utility knives, but for food, rope and cardboard/packing tape they can't be beat.

Too many "week" blood parents don't understand that to have a healthy growing season you need at least 1 child sacrifice a month. I’ve jumped through three videos and admired this guy’s family and life while he has prepared to install or repair his “Ram Pump” without ever showing how it works. I understand it’s a two valve system for pushing water in one direction. From where does the “Ram” part of the name come? Any elucidation will be greatly appreciated!
@@johndix1820 Sorry I did not fully read the question. I believe the name comes from the fact that it uses air like a "ram," to pump the water. I could be completely wrong. The source water has to be up an elevation from the pump. The basic idea is that the water flows down grade into the, "ram pump," gathers speed (gravity assist) and then passes into the pump through the first valve. Here it encounters the second valve which is closed because the water behind it is under greater pressure, and detours into the air chamber which is sealed so it compresses the air in the chamber this causes the water pressure to rise. When the pressure in the chamber is high enough the valves switch. The first valve closes because the gravity fed water is lower pressure. The second valve opens because the water in the air chamber is under higher pressure. A volume of water is pumped into the other line until the pressures reverse again. This is why the pump spits water out the waste valve so that the flow does not back up and pressure does not equalize on that valve thus killing the pumping function.
Using the pump you can pump water up to a higher elevation than the original source. The one I saw in person as a child my Grandfather used to fill a tank on four posts 20 feet above the ground and ran water into a shed for work and cleaning fish. The pump filled the tank and the tank ran pressure to the sink and fish cleaning table.
I had no idea until Cody posted the video of just how it worked. I knew they existed and that they worked. :)

IDK I think he's enjoying the operating. At his age I would've killed to dig a trench with a backhoe. Anytime I got to run the skid steer as a kid was better than Christmas.

I hate that I am disabled and cant do these things with my Jack. Mentally it is the hardest thing I've had to deal with in my life. You're a great Dad, Cody. I wish my son had a Dad like you.
@J Curry Um blind, very low vision, and our daughter Holly died at 43 in Feb 2019 of Rett Syndrome. Holly was a total quad, g-tube, no use of any limbs, and she could not talk. But she could see and hear and think. So she was trapped in a bodily prison. She had thousands of seizures, and many visits to hospitals. I sat many days by her bed, watching vids with her looking on, or watching TV with her. Yes we cannot do things like others, but we can pray, learn, and enjoy fellowship with people, even when we cannot be there too, or DIY. My best friend Gene was a quad, thrown from a pony at age 15 in 1946, he died in 2006., a total quad in nursing home for 60 years. We visited often, he helped us a lot with Holly, i.e. he helped Holly like his daughter, and treated me as his son. He used to joke, "you have only one wife, I have many women bossing me around here". Gene found a hobby, HAM RADIO, and he mentored me to become one. He used mouth sticks, including a sip stick to operate his electronic chair. Gene had many friends that he encouraged. And then there was happy hours at the nursing home, many good times. Handicapped people need TLC, but we need friends too. I learned from Gene, need a friend, be a friend.
Are you sure you don't want to coddle Jack a little more? You keep this up he's going to grow up a well rounded, intelligent and confident young man.

I was born in corn belt country, central illinois in 1951 and every winter the farmers would gather at the local gas station, in my little town and sit around a pot belly stove and talk about the last spring, summer and harvest and all the challenges they went through and how they made things work. I would get up early every morning, I was like 5 or 6 and I would run over to the gas station like 2 blocks away and just stand there in the room and listen to the them talk....I began to realize at a young age i had all the same capabilities as these men and if they could do all the things they talked about so could I. I didn't have a father he passed on his 22nd birthday in 1952. This attitude of being able to do things was like a wrench in my pocket and sponge in my brain, I devoured, things that interested me and if someone said to to me, 'you can't do that', my response was, watch me. I learned my limits but they were usually due to not having the right tool and the majority of time that alone would not defeat me the strongest tool is between your ears. .

excellent. I put my kid on a zero turn mower yesterday. after a bit of training and mentoring, he was driving around, proud of himself. A few lines sticking up but that will get better in time. Great kid...and a gift from God.

I have had one of these at my camp for years. Got about 200 feet of pipe slightly uphill from my pump to a spring fed stream. The ram pumps to four 55 gallon plastic drums mounted above the camp. We use the water pressure to have running water, a toilet, and a cold shower. Our camp is old school with propane lighting and no cell service. Literally the best place in the world.
Oh and these ram pumps work wonderfully.

I appreciate this vid. There are many men who lack critical life skills that could bring a cloud of "why is the world against me" thinking. I've often wondered how information, knowledge, skills, resources are lost. Why weren't there any fail safes to keep the transfer of these life skills to the next gen? Is it realistic to think these skills can be passed on via fail safes (most likely other family members in the event that a parent or traditions can't)? Parents are extremely important but these valuable skills aren't being passed on or children aren't being broke of bad habits early. I know where one comes from(bad experiences or a lack of .....) doesn't have to dictate your outcome but it does for many...enough to maybe bring on more socialism. You can't tell me that there isn't something happening that is setting ppl up to think socialism is their key to "success." The Overton Window has moved and standards are lower. I am amazed that I didn't wind up just like the trouble makers that I hung out with.

you should get one of the cordless grease guns for the tractor. Will speed of the greasing process and makes the job easier and more enjoyable, which means you will probably do it more often.

I've always been a fan of an explanation over an excuse. An explanation involves a thought process that can be discussed while an excuse is usually a cop out. One can always explain why they did or did not do something or explain why they did something a certain way and with that you can be open to criticism or correction. At times, the ability to explain a decision can lead to process improvements and added value. An excuse is almost always a negative or defensive position that accomplishes nothing.

Sweet explanation on how a ram pump works. Trenching use to be backbreaking work, but using a sod-buster attachment to your tractor, a person can lower the buster in to the ground and fasten the pond tubing to the buster at the same time they drive their tractor forward. Keep the tubing fastened to the back of the buster 12" above the ground and fasten it again at the bottom. This way the buster will dig your trench and lay the pond tubing all at the same time and if you aren't dealing with too many boulders and roots you can run 500' in an hour depending on the conditions. Hope I don't sound like I'm bragging only because once I saw it done, i felt stupid because of all the back breaking work I was doing. I only have a Ford 8n, but by golly it'll do this work. I have even used it to dig , lay and bury galvanized 1/2" pipe. but it works exceptionally well with plastic.

My pumps have now been running for over ten years now.....I have learned much. A2 gallon commercial pressure tank works great....you just have to brace it so it does not wobble at all.....even the slightest wobble in the pressure tank and it will crack.

Just another reminder, or in case you didn't read the last one about your piping. If you make the screen on the intake end cone shaped it will stay clear much much longer (pointy end out of course). I had to do that for taking water from a creek into a fish pond, or else the end would always get plugged.
That is Friggin cool, easy to understand, yet something most never realized! Thank you, I may try it, I've got a 7 ' drop, about 200', but it may do a nice job for my Wildlife pond !

My issue is actually starting. Once I get going I go until it's finished even if there are hiccups which there almost always are. I also like to get it done right so I don't need to revisit it any sooner than needed. My recent projects are replacing a leaking garbage disposer and fixing the cabinet from water damage and getting it was water proof as I possibly can get it. I'm also working on tearing out the carpet in my office and replacing it with vinyl plank flooring. This one is taking awhile because my office is put together like a stack of Janga logs and getting the furniture out is a problem because it's heavy and I need my office to work since I'm home office. Cody's right there's always something. 🤣
My great grandfather had a old ram pump in a spring house many many moons ago when the family farm was planted in apple trees. Pumped water about a third of a mile and up a gully on to the next hill my guess would be around 150’ of elevation. Let it run all night to fill a 2,000 gallon water tank in the ground and spray and water trees the next day. I’ve always wanted to set the ram pump up again for all I know the original one is still in that old overgrown spring box!

The larger your air chamber should allow you to have a bit more GPM it allows more bar to be accumulated in the mechanism.
Is something I want to know,if a larger air chamber affect the outline water? If someone has the answer let me know thanks.
My ram pump elevation drop is right around 1 and a half feet I have the drive pipe diameter same as supply diameter (garden hose supply which is terrible) and it goes about 250 feet and about 10 feet in height, yet still works!!! About 100 gallons a day!!! Such a simple invention that saves lots of $$$$ in the long run

a baked potato with legs, that was cute. Ram pumps are so cool for water management. Time is what makes it pump volumes. There is nothing like getting a task to do as a young man and completing it. It is what build character.

I like seeing the videos of you guys parenting, you are awesome parents. It's the little things like when your daughter fell over, Mrs Wranglerstar cheered and then kept her going. Some parents make a big deal of it and then there's tears. Kids always look straight to their parents to see how to react to a situation, if the parents looks worried or panicked then tears ensue!

He grew up crazy fast 1 year. It was like he was 8 & then he looked 14 one day.
Great video as usual Cody, if you wanted to get the premise of the pump through to people not getting it, build a clear one! Would be kinda cool to see where the water goes first, and how long it takes for the pressure chamber to reach it's maximum water level.
I like how you use USPS bins for the projects.
Place a check valve at the end of your hose so when you need to service the pump you do not need to prime the full line again.
This guy is great. These type of videos are why I enjoy subscribing to his channel.
Perhaps add a tee and another valve to atmosphere at the low point so you can drain the system during the winter.
I really dislike that TH-cam doesn't like gun videos because I really enjoy watching your gun videos..all the ones I have watched of yours have been very interesting and entertaining..TH-cam needs to get it's deal together as far as that stuff goes..guns are still legal to own and use in this country so there is no reason for them to be the way the are about them..it's total b.s. One of my best experiences when I was about jacks age was doing farm work with one of my friends. It did a lot to make me as hard a worker as I am now to have that experience then. I only wish more young people had the opportunity and wanted to take it.

Hi just thought you might like to look at a Aussie invention I've had ram pumps but eventually they just won't push enough head. A local guy here in Australia has developed a pump called a bunyip pump basically same principles but it works with a piston so. No compressing air. Seen it push 40 meters of head with a 1 meter drop.

I've got a suggestion for you, you don't need those check valves, instead what you need is a rainbird! I don't know if you've got enough weight, my system drops 60 feet in 12 inch pipe that goes into 300 feet of 4 inch but I can shoot a 60 foot circle with the rainbird and run 2 34 inch hoses while watering the garden, that way you don't just flood one spot!

@wranglerstar. With the water that is coming out of the first check valve, could you essentially create another Ram Pump off the wastage from the first pump? Although completely unnecessary for what you require, it would be cool to create a twin pump setup that uses only energy from running water, and the excess from the first pump.

That was a great video. I’m learning heaps more about ram pumps thank you. I always cringe when you tighten up the brass fittings. If you don’t mind me saying! That’s how the fittings crack. Wind on a lot more thread tape ( gas fitting thread tape is thicker) and don’t tighten round the last one or two turns. She will seal.!! Cheers ps That’s a very nice boy right there.

Great Vid I learned a lot. It's funny there is a circuit called a voltage doubler that works the same way for electricity. Replace the pipes with wires and the check valves with diodes and you have it.

reminds me of water hammer. Using the forces of water hammer to pump water.a force that can be so powerful that it can blow apart pipes. But with the ram pump is takes this effect with the check valves to turn this in to work, to pump water.
