    This is by far the best tut I have seen on Local Vol fog on internet. The scene itself is so very compelling.
    Would love to see a video on the scene set up too.

      Thank you for the super kind words, will probably make an updated version of the volume fog at some point. Maybe I should do an update of this environment at the same time lol. Thank you for the suggestion :)

    Fantastic and really helpful video. I've spent ages messing about with Niagra trying to get a decent volumetric fog. Ended up with a result that was fairly expensive and difficult to control. The approaches outlined here got me exactly what I needed. I also now don't have the problem that I did with Lumen light jitter. Thank you!

      @Flipside3D  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm really glad that it's helpful for you! I'd love to make the volume fog look a bit better from the side but a lot of this shader stuff is hard for me lol.

      Yes you are right but media fog is actually the most expensive in this case. Although you could make it cheaper with lower res etc but it's still quite heavy. Try this for volume fog th-cam.com/video/pYLhnsRvHR4/w-d-xo.html Updated, much better and detailed volume fog

    • @Flipside3D
      @Flipside3D  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers, there's a string of nodes from around 4:10 that does the edge fading, combined with the depth fade, it should be enough to make it quite soft. If the parameters you've set up in the Material instance isn't doing anything, I'd double check if there weren't anything that is different from how I set it up in the material.

    Updated volume fog tutorial : th-cam.com/video/pYLhnsRvHR4/w-d-xo.html
    !! PLEASE READ !! If you are having issues with the volume fog, here is a list of things you can try :
    0. 14:52 has me searching for the ObjectLocalBounds node, this is not searchable anymore from the material graph in 5.3. No idea why. But you can search for it in the content browser, it's in one of the Engine material functions folders. In the project root of your content browser search for ObjectLocalBounds and just drag it to your material graph.
    1. Engine scalability - Epic or higher
    2. Adjust exponential height fog density and visibility in the scene
    3. Make sure you have ticked 'Volumetric fog' in your exponential height fog
    4. Double check that you have the settings correct in your 'Transform Position' Node (14:22)
    5. Instead of the World absolute position node & transform position node, you can try using Local Position node and use local position pin.
    6. If nothing works, it is most likely to be some kind of bug with UE5. Try a fresh project. Update GPU driver, reinstall the engine and try again (this actually solved it for some people)
    7. If you can't find the Perlin noise texture for any reason be sure to check 'Show Plugin Content' in your Content browser settings
    8. Try different noise textures (there are several included in the base engine install, or google it). Some textures look better than others.

    • @DamienRamirez
      @DamienRamirez ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@-A-L-T Go to Directional light, there will be a setting for volumetric scattering light, crank that up/down. If it still doesn't appear with it on in heightfog & the D-light scatter still turned up, Press G & if you see it, you need to start the engine to fix the Shader issue.

      Yes so open the Master material you've made, select the material result node, in the details panel search for DOF. Change the translucency pass to 'Before DOF' and it should work with depth of field. Good luck!

    Hello,Thx for this great tutorial,but it seems method N.3(video fog )dosen't work anymore with UE 5.0.3 or is it me?😁

      Hi thank you, I got a similar message from someone else so I checked just now and it's working for me in 5.0.3. Make sure you are using a JPEG sequence (not MP4, MP4 isn't working with DX12 atm). If nothing works, I recommend starting a fresh blank project and trying it there first.

    Hello, thanks for this great tutorial. I am facing a problem howerver, when trying to render my scene using path tracing mode, the volume fog disappears. It works very well in lit mode. Is there a way to see the fog in path tracing ?

      Thank you for the kind reply, which engine version are you using? I haven't had the chance to test this recently but I was under the impression that height fog was supposed to work with path tracing in the recent versions of the engine. Maybe it just doesn't work with how it's processed as a local fog.... But then does the normal height fog work in Path tracing now? I need to test...

      I'm working in unreal engine 5.1. I'm coming from houdini so all of this is still pretty new to me but I will try explaining as I can. From what I see, the height fog is working fine in path tracing, it's appearing in my render. What I do not see are the cubes with the volume material that I placed in my scene. I think the parameters of the material are correct as they do appear in lit mode. My guess would be that this type of material is not supported by the path tracing ?

      Hi just tried it and unfortunately I can't get it working with this method. I think it might have to do with how it's changing from world space to local space. But then again Pathtracing didn't even work with volumetric fog until recently.

      Well that's too bad for me I guess, I will try adding the fog in compositing then. But anyway, thank you for your time and your answers !

      @@gunflower2700 Hey man, just wanted to let you know I just tried this again using slightly different nodes (Local Position, Object local bounds) but unfortunately it's not working in Pathtracer, hopefully this gets addressed in an update down the line. FYI I'm in 5.2

    I just download soft soft. Are you using the paid version or the free tutorial one? Because your screen looked way different than mine.

    Thank you for sharing your video. I followed your tutorial and created a volume fog in UE5, and the effect is pretty good. However, I hope the fog can have a stronger sense of drifting. I tried to adjust the parameters of speedx and speedy, but it seems to have no effect, and the fog basically does not have a faster sense of drifting. How can I solve this problem? I look forward to your reply.(MaskSize 0.5,opacity 7,speedx -0.1,speedy -0.1)

      Hi, are you sure you've hooked the nodes up correctly? The speed parameters should definitely have an effect on how the mask is moving. I would preview your mask node and check that it's moving in your material graph and then try again.
