    Extra tip: If you like to enhance performance you can do so by converting the smoke clips from 4K (3840x2160) to HD (1920x1080) during the media encoder process.

      Thanks for this amazing tutorial. I come from C4D, is there a way to make this material double sided? Couldn't find the solution with a jpeg sequence.

    just to add guys, the mp4 smoke fog overlays dont all have the best quality. mp4s are already compressed. so youre gonna wanna try to pick a fog overlay that doesnt look overly compressed in your viewport and play around with the opacity to get your desired look. so i think it is better to export it as a png sequence beforehand. also remember that the smoke overlays are at 23.976 fps so be sure to change your timeline fps to the same and export your render at the same fps.
    amazing tutorial! thank you!

    Thank you Vincent! Making decent looking smoke and mist had been bothering me recently, and was looking into complicated work arounds with particles etc, but your example shows that simpler is often better. Great little valuable tutorial.

    thanks for showing us this Vincent. I have been using the fog card technique for a while but the media player texture method is new to me. Depending on the performance it might be a better looking alternative to panning fog cards. The downside is that the actual look of the fog is pre-rendered and therefore baked down, unable to change the look on the fly. Another tool in the kit though :P

    the fog card's depth of field doesnt work correctly(especially on outline of static meshes). so i checked output velocity to apply dof blur, error occurs(depth fade node cannot use with it). do you know how to apply right dof blur when using depth fade node?

    • @vincentboudewijn
      @vincentboudewijn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can try bringing the card more forward and increasing the depth fade or rotate your card to an angle

    • @daniel6sharma
      @daniel6sharma 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use some kind of gradient texture and multiply it with the opacity texture. this is an important step i feel because some smoke goes off screen and creates a weird edge on the top or sides.

    Fantastic tutorial. Great pace in general. i can understand you converting the h264 to a image sequence, as this is a delivery codec which would slow down the systen.
    But i also wonder how it would work if you would add a luma key on the the stock footage in any motion graphics app, then export it using a i-frame codec wirh alpha. like ProRes444 or cineform. These codecs only need hardrive speed and will not affect the gpu, like a h264 codec does.
    That would save quite a few steps in this process. but its great to see this version as well. looking forward to the next one.
    groetjes uit Holland 😃

    Ive done something so that every time I try to redo the whole process, even with different overlays everything is always coming out really greyed out and not as emissive from my guess but I have no idea what ive done? It was working fine then I tried to replace the footage with a different overlay and ever since it just hasn't worked. any ideas?

    Love the effect but man for some reason it’s crazy heavy on my project. Have a 3090 and when adding about 5 of these it started to bring thinks to a crawl. Is there a way to like bake this? So the media player isn’t constantly trying to render it?

    • @vincentboudewijn
      @vincentboudewijn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm I haven't looked into this, but what you could try is downsize the smoke files in encoder a bit. In this example we kept everything 4k, but im pretty sure 1920x1080 res would work fine aswell and will probably help speeding it up

    Could you write or show how to change the color of the fog? Thank you

    • @vincentboudewijn
      @vincentboudewijn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hold 3 on the keyboard in the node graph, it will create a 3 color constant, then just before your base color input or before your emission mix it in with a multiply node. Don't forget to make the 3 color constant a parameter ofcourse for material instance control

    Nice video the only thing i will complain about is the video being high res that things appear smaller on my 720p screen
