Caterpillar 112 knuckle buster restoration part 7

Work continues on the old Caterpillar 112 motor grader. On this episode I fix the pinion engagement rod and fail miserably at welding the opinion lever for the pony engine that is used to start the D315 diesel.

Great work. But I reckon you should braze it back on. It will work better for cast iron in my experience...

I really don't like the NI rods for cast iron. Have had some luck with the 309 SS rods but I prefer brazing. It's all in understanding heat control, getting the part hot enough to accept the braze and then just enough extra heat at the joint to flow the braze in. Heat until the braze melts in the joint pull the heat back for a second back in for another dab watch for what we call wetting out of the puddle. the edges will be shiny and flow on to the cast metal and not be humped up. If the braze is flowing all over the place you have it to hot and the flame maybe too big or too much pressure with the flame (the flame is blowing the braze around). But then again you may already know all this. keep up the good work I'm enjoying the progress. currently I am working on a 1941 Adams 511 grader. Great video Thank you.
