Where I work, we recertify compressed gas cylinders. Such as what refrigerant comes in, only much bigger sizes like 1000 pound capacity cylinders. If they’re rusty inside we use an 18% hydrochloric acid. Works super well

A good tip when lapping valves into their seats is to put a light spring between the valve head and the guide. This means you can stop ever few turns, let the spring lift the valve off the seat and dribble a little bit of kerosene around the valve, this carries the grinding compound back into the lapping zone. A proper valve grinding power tool, like Black and Decker used to make, is not rotary but oscillating .

Squatch253 is another excellent channel to check out.
He restored a Cat D4 total disassembly, repair and replace as needed and rebuilt 100 percent.
Pacific Northwest Hillbilly also did his in his shop barn his wife has the upstairs loft for her antique restoration shop.
It was amazing watching both of them building tools as needed and sourcing parts.
It's unbelievable how many parts Cat has available for those 70 plus year old engines.

I love to see your excitement when you get one of these old girls fired up & running after you have worked so hard ,sometimes for a few day`s getting all the problems sorted & fixed. You have come a lone way since you started your channel with your mechanic abilities & know-how. With almost 600 thousand subscribers to your channel, you my friend are doing it right, and you have earned all of it, no easy task at all. You deserve to be proud of your success Matt. It just goes to show that just because it’s OLD, it doesn’t mean it can RUN. I miss hauling construction equipment/oversized stuff here&there(I’m mostly tanker these days), and watching you resurrect these old beasts keeps me in touch. It’s not lost on me at the end, with the old Autocar cab being brought in with your skid steer…..glad you’ve not given up on that truck, even with the more/capable orange Autocar in use…

Yes, it is great to see him use one piece of equipment to start the starter for another piece of equipment. Very innovative. Most of those old dogs have update kits to replace the pony motor with an electric starter, but I doubt he will eve do it, unless he wants to use this as one of him main pieces of equipment. Otherwise he will keep it pure.

Congratulations, Matt! You are a magician when it comes to coaxing old iron to come to life! I think one of your greatest attributes as a mechanic is your patience and your willingness to try different approaches to get things to do what you want them to do. Anyway, your enthusiasm when you reach your goal of making the engine come to life is catching. I was smiling from ear to ear when I saw your joy as you got the old grader mill to fire up! Thanks again for another great video. 😊 1:12:24

Amazing at how the old stuff never wants to die. 2 decades ago we carried 2 giant batteries into a field and within 20 minutes had an old D6 from the 1960's running that had been sitting for a least 5 years. I have been hooked ever since on these old machines, big or small. Great video and the best part is that you saved one from the scrap man. Once these old beasts are gone they're gone forever. Keep up the great work.

Great job Matt! It's nice to hear the old machines run again. I remember as a kid playing with friends in an old construction company lot with many old trucks and other equipment in there. My favorite was an old chain drive dump truck. You rarely see any of those around anymore. Your enthusiasm and joy at getting these old pieces running again is mainly why I love watching these videos. Thanks for the entertainment!

Well if that wasn't fun , Caterpillar doesn't run.😊 And Matt , this has been a real hit with your fans here too. It's such great relief that the pony motor on Cat equipment has been retired. Choice job cutting the seat on the valve. A cutter for the seat in the head would have been a great improvement. You got it to seat though 👍

I am really surprised that the pony motor started that easy, not to mention that it ran great, and the was ingenious to use that saw as a starting tool, and then to have the diesel engine to start up and actually run good, so happy things worked out for you Matt, looks like it might turn out being a great functional grader to your collection 👍👍👍🍮🍮🍮😃😃😃

Nice to see your trying to come up with new uses for Budlight cans, shame it didn't work, if it had they may have used it in a new add. When using hand crank don't put your thumb around crank handel, keep it on the same side as your fingers and cup it, if there's a back fires the crank handel kicks back wrenching up your thumb shattering it along with your wrist, I was 8 month in a pot cast. Its a saftey tip that was getting lost in time in the 1960 when I started work, still have trouble with it all these years later. Brilliant site.
