I love Linda since she wrote Beautiful, one of the best songs ever...but I'm a huge fan of Katy, and I think her music does have substance! Since I don't follow Gaga I've only heard her singles, so I can't judge her album as a whole. You haven't heard Katy's non-singles, so you don't know how amazing they are.

I think I have a right to say this because I've heard her live in concert and I was very surprised at how amazing she sounded. I can't say I was ever a fan of 4 Non Blondes back when I was a teen in the 90s; I found their Grunge Lite sound kind of lame, but Linda Perry does have a good strong, if somewhat husky voice. The thing to remember is that there are THOUSANDS of bands on MySpace or although not signed, if given the money for a video amd album with the production quality of Lady Gaga or KP, and the money to market to millions of people, internet radio stations, TV stations etc would be just as famous if not more so. For Adele to sit in a chair, full figured and be the top of them all, with nothing but some glasses of water for her video is nothing short amazing.

She was rather blunt, but she didn't bash Katy so much as she told the truth. It's disposable, meaningless, fluff music. I get her point but she obviously hasn't heard "Teenage Dream" because as an album it's full of singles. Yes, it's not solid or cohesive but it's like every song of it could be a single. And that's the reason it has produced 5 #1's and still goes strong. It hasn't got crappy songs, it just has fun, pop music which can be generic at times but not too generic to be crappy. It's actually brilliant and that's why it's #1.

The thing to remember is that there are THOUSANDS of bands on MySpace or although not signed, if given the money for a video amd album with the production quality of Lady Gaga or KP, and the money to market to millions of people, internet radio stations, TV stations etc would be just as famous if not more so. For Adele to sit in a chair, full figured and be the top of them all, with nothing but some glasses of water for her video is nothing short amazing.

Usually I'm entirely against musicians publicly slamming other musicians (regardless of whether I agree with them or not), but Linda makes a great point. She was rather blunt, but she didn't bash Katy so much as she told the truth. It's disposable, meaningless, fluff music. Which wouldn't be a problem at all if it were treated exactly as such, but for crying out loud, she's gotten a Grammy nod for AOTY and comparisons to Michael Jackson as a result of her success!

I´m not American not even anglosaxon. Linda Perry´s got a brutal voice (also Katty Perry). I love the way she sings, how powerful she is. But sometimes I think that anglo music has come to point where everything sounds "basicaly" the same. Linda Perry deserves respect, but Im sure that Katty or Kate would be able to perform her sons, Linda´s songs without problems. I love Linda. Her voice is brutal. Love her.

Though I agree with the assessment on Katy Perry, can't say I am particularly impressed with Linda Perry's songs either. Nothing "music changing" there as far as I can tell. Sounds pretty much standard pop music to me. Can name a whole lot of better songwriters and musicians than either lady.
@7trueamerican Exactly. When she started out. That means playing in Night Clubs performing with Semi Precious Weapons and Lady Starlight. This was before the fame. And yes she did do drugs, any person who does drugs is crazy. But that honestly has nothing to do with what we're talking about....

I get her point but she obviously hasn't heard "Teenage Dream" because as an album it's full of singles. Yes, it's not solid or cohesive but it's like every song of it could be a single. And that's the reason it has produced 5 #1's and still goes strong. It hasn't got crappy songs, it just has fun, pop music which can be generic at times but not too generic to be crappy. It's actually brilliant and that's why it's #1.

@AddictiveDisease Perhaps you're right to some extent that part of Katy's popularity comes from her image, but you cannot deny all the effort she's put into creating her music and her musical talent. I understand how lots of people think that her music is rather commercial and her music videos are full of antics, but I hope you can also realize that sometimes sliding into mainstream doesn't mean the music itself is not good. Pop music can be catchy and good as well.

The Music industry needs to have full control over who they sign, what they sing and how it is marketed. In the 70's almost ANYONE with hair was getting signed to multi-album deals now you have to be Disney style. That's why KatyP is marketed with pre-teen and teen acts because that is where the money is. Conform or be cast out.
