4 non blondes seemed to come out of nowhere. On top of that they didn’t necessarily fit in with any of the popular music scenes at the time. The media fixated on the fact that they were an all-girl group early on in their career. Their sole 1992 record bigger, better, faster and more went platinum selling over a million copies in America and producing what was both one of the biggest hit songs and one of the most maligned songs of the 90’s ‘What’s Up.’ But years later it would come out that despite the band’s success. From the early days of their success it became apparent this group wasn’t going to last. Frontwomen Linda Perry would boast to the LA Times in 1993 “We thrive on being unpredictable. We get a kick out of breaking every rule we can.”Today let’s explore whatever happened to 4 non blondes.
Frontwomen and principal songwriter the half brazilian-half portuguese Linda Perry would be born in Springfield, Mass., Perry would spend her formative years on the west coast in San Diego. Within the first two years of her life she had failing kidneys and was told by doctors she may not make a full recovery, but she rebounded. Despite her health problems, she still had a rough childhood telling the LA Times. “I was a confused kid, going in 20 directions at once and going nowhere.” Describing her childhood as unhappy. Perry would soon find music thanks to brother John who was a well versed guitarist. She wanted to learn guitar like him. As a kid she used to lock herself in the bathroom with a guitar, a taper player and sing. Her teenage years proved to be turbulent as she questioned her sexuality and felt different from other girls and almost took her own life overdosing on her mother’s pills from the bathroom. It was after this close call she brushed aside any reservations she had about who she was a
That’s not to say the road ahead in her musical journey was easy. Her parents would soon divorce resulting in her living with her mother and being thrown into poverty. It was during this time Perry opted to live on the street where she got introduced to drugs. She would admit to doing everything but heroin, but it would be another close call that resulted in her getting sober, when she fell off a building and broke her collar bone.. Perry’s first few bands didn’t go well after she was fired from her first two bands because according to her bandmates they didn’t like her voice. She would take a short break from music and move to San Franscisco and the age of 21 in 1986. The move seemed to reignite her passion for music and give her more confidence telling
The LA Times. “Suddenly this big voice came out of me--as if by magic. I was saner then so I thought to myself, ‘Why not do something with this voice?’ At the time I felt like I had lived 40 years. It was time to grow up and get a career.”
Bassist Christa Hillhouse and guitarist Shaunna Hall would be roomates in San Francisco and met drummer Wanda Day when they joined a band she was playing in. The three members eventually broke off and started their own three person band. The three members came from different musical backgrounds and had already had some experience playing around san francisco. Day played in a reggae and ska punk band before landing a lucrative gig as a top 40 cover band who played at a Holiday Inn. Hillhouse meanwhile would play in at least 14 different bands by 1989. It wasn’t too long after this Hall and Hillhouse came across Linda Perry at the club Nightbreak.. Hillhouse would describe the fateful night that changed her career revealing on her website “One night Shaunna and I wandered into the Nightbre

I hitched a ride from a German guy in Brittany once and he liked it so much, he'd recorded it over and over again on a cassette so it really did seem endless. 'I love this song!' he eventually explained, kind of superfluously.
He had driven non-stop from Germany and was severely sleep deprived. I hadn't noticed, but the friend I was hitching with did. When we got out, she commented on it and, as she did, his car drifted forward on a slight slope and bumped another car.

I wound up jamming with her in someone's garage and she was playing trumpet with me on drums. I met Wanda through a mutual friend and partied with her one night. "Normal" or "square" families really don't go around suggesting hipster potheads are unclean because they aren't "blonde" (although "if the shoe fits"... anyone dressing like a homeless mental case and hanging around public parks in San Francisco shouldn't be surprised if they are treated like that -- SF is the epicenter of homeless, public drug addiction, and rampant crime -- just ask Mayor London Breed!).
4 Non-blondes were drama queens about their "controversies." Probably doomed to self-destruction because of that. Like many rock bands, egos and narcissism usually undermine success. 4 Non-blondes were no different. Sounds like Linda Perry is doing fine as a songwriter on her own these days.

@Rock N' Roll True Stories @12:35 you mention that James Mankey played and toured with
4 Non Blondes. It might be worth mentioning that James is a founding member and only guitar player for Concrete Blonde! I was a fan of 4NB's debut album, but still am a superfan of Concrete Blonde.
I cannot tell you the amount of times people confused the 2 bands. The fact that he played and toured with the similar sounding named band may have helped confuse the issue more so. At any rate, both bands had incredibly talented lead singers/songwriters, with 4 Non Blondes fronted by Linda Perry, and Concrete Blonde having the incomparable Johnette Napolitano on vocals (and bass). Both women left an indelible mark on the 90s music scene.

Being a 'Rock Star' is such a precarious position - often the lesser talented artists are able to capture the attention and fandom of listeners.
Interestingly, many of the talented musicians/recording artists are able to have successful post-stardom careers as session musicians, songwriters and producers.
One of my favorite musical artists is Todd Rundgren - who's had more success as a Producer than as a Musician/Singer.

I had never heard this band before. Like many things, it was before my time. I went to listen to their hit song, and there was an almost visceral immediate reaction, like "Oh, so you're the ones behind this!". I think that's all that needs to be said about the song's staying power. As for how good it is, I think my reaction also tells that, but music is subjective, so who cares? Though I do love the outfits, and will still check out the rest of the album.

Linda Perry's voice and song writing talents are amazing! Some bands weren't meant to stay together - there were so many bands in the early 90's that just disappeared after a few hit songs. It was like a testing ground for music and what the A&R "guys" thought people wanted to hear. Honestly, it was a pretty cool time to listen to music. Some songs just transcend the artists who create them.

It's a bit weird not to mention some of the big hits she wrote and produced for other artists, like; "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera, "What You Waiting For?" by Gwen Stefani; and "Get the Party Started" by P!nk.

The band was active in San Francisco but I never saw them before they moved to my studio (the Plant Studios) across the GG Bridge in Sausalito to record Whats up which Perry produced very well. I never heard the earlier versions but it was clearly a hit the way she did it. She is a very talented songwriter and producer.

What`s up was amazing, and was constantly on tv and radio back than. I loved it. But I remember buying the album at a flee market. Listening on the way home in the car. My mum obciously hated it but my surprise was that my brother and I both hated it. And he listened to KISS and Metallica and also really liked Whats Up.I was about 10 so no clue if I would like it better now

I’ve always hated when people get mad at bands for getting popular. The same thing happened to 311 at first.

When I first heard that song, I thought it was catchy. By the 5th time, I was already sick of it. By the 2000th time, I was ready to pull the trigger. I cannot think of a more annoying song, though "Single Ladies" by Beyonce is a very, very close second. Glad I got that off my chest. Carry on.

Same here. I didn't know anything about this band, and haven't since except for this video now. However the song in question for me was not the best experience. After the 3rd., 4th. time I Tossed the Cassette into the trash. It was Annoying and looking into that Huge Yabo with the stupid leather top hat, just made me sick. I could tell they were L-bo's, but that didn't bother me. It's just the same as other people's opinion that if Ya don't like a song, a sound, it just will not work. It's an 'each to their own' kind of deal. That being said, I'm impressed that Pink's break out song was penned by Perry. I'm certain her talent will live on. And my opinion is not worthy of a negative response. It IS, what it IS. ( difference strokes for different folks, that's all)💚💛❤👊😎

I would imagine that playing one’s all-time, most favorite song 2000 times would make one sick of it. Maybe it wasn’t the song, but the self-inflicted torture of repetition?
