When I was in high school, I was so deep in the closet I didn’t know there was a closet. Part of my rationalization was that I had a “steady” girlfriend for almost 3 years. Of course, she was also deeeep in the closet, so we were mutual “beards.” The social scene at our high school was entirely couple-centric, we were (and still are) good friends, and it gave both of us a convenient way to sidestep lots of uncomfortable questions we might otherwise have asked ourselves. We maybe should’ve suspected SOMETHING was up, because our very first kiss (peck on the lips, no tongue) was after 2½ years of dating. We were good little Christians who would never even THINK about premarital sex, of course. Her parents trusted me alone with her in her bedroom with the door closed.
I finally came out in my last semester of college (such a wasted opportunity!); she finally came out when she was 29, and was utterly dismayed that the near-universal reaction was, “Oh, we’re so glad you finally figured it out!” A friend had distanced herself in 7th grade because she was afraid of “guilt by association” that they would figure out that she was a lesbian, too.
What a fabulous story. I actually considered trying to find a closeted lesbian girlfriend once, but only because dating girls seemed so deceptive to me, and it was eating me up. There was a time in my life when keeping the secret was the most important issue in my life. So weird! You are right, such a waste.

I had a girlfriend for 3 years. I really loved being with her. She was a great friend and very talented artistic deep person. We were very close. But I broke up with her because I realized I could never give her what she needed most. The emotional bond of sexual love and connection. I am just not wired that way.
I was the same way. Me and a girl friend loved hanging out together and having fun but she wanted kids but i felt i was not ready and was in denial for a long time about being gay. I felt she would not be happy and I would not be happy if we had a relationship becuause I am more interested in guys. So we went our seperate ways but still remain friends to this day.

Watching your “evolution” is difficult. Sophia is an impressive person. You were VERY lucky. Here’s a question for part two, Sophia, had you found out Chris was gay while you were dating, how would you have handled it ? And Chris, how did you feel when breaking up with her , was it truth guided you, or were you opting out of hurting her feelings, possibly humiliating her in front of everyone ?

I dated a girl when I was 16 for like a year. Really loved her and the person she was but as time went on I realized I couldn’t give her everything she needed in a partner because I wasn’t being my whole self. I actually broke up with her on my birthday and it was really messy and quite a few people got mad at me and stopped talking to me. I was still in the closet for about another 2 years but started to get comfortable with the fact that I am gay.

What a great vid/blog segment. I can't believe it is over a year old. Why am I only just now seeing it? Your ex is so cute. To answer your question, yes, I spent the majority of my life in the closet and dated many girls just for show. Some of the girls I dated turned into relationships that I thought I really needed at the time. But although I told myself and everyone else differently, deep inside, I knew each one was doomed. I feel awful about it now because it is like using that other person without their knowledge and that sucks. But at the time, I thought keeping my secret was paramount. This was a very good segment. Thank you for sharing it. Kudos to you both.

Hey Chris. It sounds like you and Sophia really haven’t had a chance to talk since you broke things off 5 years ago. I’m happy you finally did. Really some funny and awkward stories and she even has pictures……….and of course no one suspected. There is definitely chemistry between the two of you (not necessarily sexual) and I don’t think your reason for getting together in high school was purely to hide your sexuality. She seems super nice and she still has feelings for you. We could all see those warm, affectionate glances that even made you nervous. Just my opinion but she seems like she could be a good friend. Definitely would like to see a follow-up video. There are plenty of unasked questions like how she would have reacted if you had been honest with her? Really enjoyed the video Chris.

I know this is an older video, but just watched it today, and yeah loved it. Your question about others and having a g/f as a cover.......... Yeah several......... Man, growing up in the older generation it was like mandatory. Never anything serious, but you had to have someone on the hook. I was like going on 30 before I took down that closet door, and ventured out.
At which time I left my small farm town life and finally moved to the city. Said it before, will say it again..... The younger generation has things so much more open now.
While we still have a long road to go, I'm just glad to see the progress made over like the last 20 yrs or so.

Awww Sophia is absolutely lovely. It's good you guys are friends. My partner had a girlfriend for a loooong time (like 8 years) until he came out in his late 20s. I've asked him "what were you thinking?!!" and he just thought he could fake it forever but realized he couldn't.

I had two beards lol conservative upbringings make us do stupid things in pursuit of acceptance. When I came out (I didn't until I was 21) I went full tilt into the gay lifestyle and pretty much rejected anything too heterosexual. Now I've matured a bit and realized I'm actually bi and there are days when I wonder where we would be if I had stuck with one of my high school girlfriends... im happy where I am though and thats whats important! 😊

When I was starting high school back in 96' I didnt know at all WHAT I WAS INSIDE TRULY! Very confusing time at 12/13 years old starting and then constanstly wearing every piece of clothing and make up of my mothers every chance i got.Being humiliated or dominated in any fashion turned me on,submissive nature i understood a few years later which totally makes sense. I wanted to wear the gorgeous lifeguards girls two piece bikini uniforms like them.they were all my friends.SOOOOOOO JEALOUS of their Boobs and hips.

She knew you were gay? Is it possible, that she thinks her ginger husband, might be attracted to you? I had the opposite. I was with my boyfriend since college then lived together. It wasn't a secret among our friends, although we didn't flaunt it. We lived in a one bedroom with one bed! he was sort of "bi" in college and so was I. One day, he decided that his family was getting suspicious and he needed to find a "beard"! Well, he did and dated her and a year later married her. Although, i was sad, i was also happy for him and thought that he might actually be straight. His wedding was out of town and i didn't go.
Wrong i was. when his wife was pregnant, he called and asked to hang out. I said Sure, i'd love that!" "i had no grudge. Well, after a few drinks and some smoke, he came on to me and said, he loved me and wanted to pick up where we left off and keep me as "his secret!" Not interested in that at all! I was "jilted" but ok. He lives a total lie with his wife. I'm the lucky one!

Nope. Never had a beard [except I've been fuzzy faced since sophomore year in college]. I took the short route from self closeted to out my senior year in college.
Well, I like guys a lot and feel attracted to them but unfortunately, my environment is not open to homosexuality. Some people do have that perception of me being a gay guy to the extent of asking about my sexuality. I literally never dated anyone throughout my middle, high and tertiary level and kept to myself. It is really hard sometimes not to let go of your feeling especially when you feel attracted to a handsome dude.
I know I'm late to the party, but I couldn't help respond to your question. I knew I was gay at 13 and faked it until I was 30. I even got married to a girl. When we got a divorce and I was at the lowest of my lows I kicked the door far off the hinges and it was honestly the best thing I ever did. I wish I had the courage to come out when you did!

Nope, I never ever ever had a friend. Fun fact 2 girls from my class actually asked me out when I was 13 and 15, and one of them was/is the prettiest in my class. And I said no, cause I didn't have any feelings for them. Damn, I was so true to myself since the beginning !

Completely by accident, but yes I did have a beard in high school... it ended messy, and almost in the worst way, but I never came out in High School and barely did in college. Those that know me well, know I am, including her, but most of the people from my past I stay in contact I never directly told.

I did have a girlfriend to keep up str8 appearances to just about everyone I knew, except for the couple of guys I was sneaking around with. I was convincing and believable to the girlfriend, and until I told her differently she believed me to be str8. Which is very surprising because I know I was a very effeminate boy in my actions and in the way I sounded. But I was also very athletic. Not in the traditional masculine sports, my interests were in Speed Skating, Gymnastics, Track and Field, Swimming and Diving. I was very good at all those things and even at a National level with the speed skating. I went on my 1st guy/guy date when I was 17. Keep in mind that when I was 17 it was 1977. Not an ideal time for a young man to be coming out of the closet. But come out I did! And never looked back. The girlfriend I had way back then is someone I cherish in real life still. Although we don't see each other I still do hold her in very high regard. I also carry a little bit of guilt for putting her through that. Fast forward... Met the man of my dreams in 1990. Moved in with each other 2 weeks after the day we met. After having been together for 25 years we decided to make it legal. We've been together for 30 years, married for 5 of those. I have an adopted son who just turned 40 today. Really making me feel my age. I've had a really wonderful life and look forward to the next 40 years!!!

pretty much the same like your story. Closeted when I was in High School and I had a girlfriend for 2 months I think and we broke up. Getting a GF to convince other ppl that I am not gay. When I was in the 4th year HS i met this guy who became my boyfriend. after my ex GF knew it. She posted. "My Prince before, Is now a princess like me" that made me laugh real hard. HAHAHAHA!
I feel like the example of people saying your ex made you gay is relatable. People will label you in life even if its not true are they don't care about the facts they will do anything to destroy you. My best advice ignore it and fight the best you can again such comments (not physical fighting) People just dont understand life at that age as well. Life is hard I hope I worded this in a way of understanding if not idk if I can word it better. But I hope you understand what I am trying to say.

I'm OLD - being out in high school is beyond my imagination. So glad young people today have the freedom to understand and express themselves (unless they live in the US South!) Given I'm bi -- I would have tried to stay with this girl at that age - so cute (they both are... sweet couple) She's more likely to keep a guy straight than "turn" him gay! it's nice they managed to remain close.
