    First heard this on the album breeze from the east in 1968. Wow. Hearing it today, March 2, for the first time in 51 years!

    Steve Khan comments on this song: "Where playing with a slight swing feel is concerned, for me, that idea comes from one familiar recording, and that is Cal Tjader's 1966 "SOUL BURST"(Verve) album. The influence of that album, the music within it, and the incredible performances on piano of a young Chick Corea just changed my life. On that same album, on the tune, "Curaçao" there was a moment that struck me immediately the first time that I heard it go buy, and it stayed with me. It entered into my growing awareness of the possible in music. At somewhere around the 4:40 mark of this great tune in 6/8, Chick goes into a really forceful swing feel over the 6/8, and then, just as gracefully, he exits that feeling and returns to playing in the hypnotic 6/8. In truth, my own capacity to feel that, and play that way comes from what I heard way back when."

    No he visto un vibrafonista más versátil que Carl Tjader , tremendísimo maestro , en la TUMBADORA Carlos Patato Valdés !!!!.

    I have heard many versions but there is only one Cal Tjader; Zihuatanejo, Tonala, playas de Sucre, Isla de Plata, Grand Caymans etc.

    Anybody know why this song is called "Curacao"?

    • @pottymouthstudios9889
      @pottymouthstudios9889 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a type of alcohol I believe. And the name of a country. Its probably to do with the country.
      I don't know, I just discovered this song 2 minutes ago.

      @@pottymouthstudios9889 There is a Curaçao folkloric music rhythm called "Tumba" which definitely seems like the basis for this Tjader composition and which currently also serves as inspiration for contemporary jazz pianists such as the Curaçao native Randall Corsen. Good, intricate stuff.

      Cal was in the Navy so it may have been one of his stops. As you can see, he was spent time in the Philippines by a few of his song titles.

    is this roger glenn on flute ?

    • @markhdz7858
      @markhdz7858  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Wendell liner notes say: Jerry Dodgion or Jerome Richardson, Seldon Powell (fl); which I assume is flute, but there seems to be some unknown factor on who exactly is playing. Original LP issue: "Soul Burst" Verve V6-8637.

      @@markhdz7858 I myself have been thru this same loss of time memory but some little niche is saying to me , Jerome Richardson. Jerome Richardson... a grand musician who long ago released a side on "Jazztone", " Moon and Sand " that drew me in forever.

    I prefer Clare Fischer's version. Something sounds off key here.

    • @markhdz7858
      @markhdz7858  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fischer's version is clearly a tribute from his album "Tjaderama", I'm sticking by the original.

      for some reason i like the piece more because of that, gives a dissonant feel

      I re-listened to Fischer's version. The difference: Recording quality and greater presence of the music.
