I discovered this a few years ago while driving a limo. It always played on WXFM when I was parked at the same place. Every time Ihe I heard it I had to get out of the car and start dancing on the sidewalk!
Continued reply: every time I heard it get out of the car and start dancing on the sidewalk. FOR REAL!! AND I JUST LOVE THE WAY THAT HERBIE CHANGES HIS RHYTHM EVERY TIME HE STARTS ANOTHER CHORUS ON THE COMPS!!!!!
What I loved about Kenny Durham even though he was sick in the hospital he checked his self out and went to see MY Lee Morgan what a faithful n loving man. R I P. Kenny n Lee
Fantastic Ensemble..... Herbie Hancock , Ken Dorham such a sweet sound in its purist form. Great Jazz compositions like this always tell a story about the ups and downs of life . That's what I get about this piece of music.....
I rate him as up there with Lee Morgan. I rate others too as performers or composers but these two did both writing New music, New sounds.... OK I might invite Donald Byrd to make it three... or not... perhaps not so original??
I was all over Miles. Then one day my teacher call me and Said WAIT WAIT !!! An gave me some Kenny Dorham tunes. Since then I am a diehard Dorham fan .
Five Thousand Stars!!!!!!!!! This is one of the baddest Blue Note LPs in the entire catalog! This is always as fresh as the first time I heard this masterpiece by K.D. Kenny Dorham was not only one of the finest trumpet stylists of all time, but also an incredible composer. He was truly underrated as a trumpeter but he's one of my top 10 favorite jazz composers along with Monk, Horace Silver, Strayhorn, Ellington, Bill Lee and others. Yes, that's a young Herbie Hancock along with some of the baddest Joe Henderson every recorded and an even younger (only 17 yrs old) Tony Williams along with Butch Warren. Honestly, Tony is playing his best on this record. He never played better than on this, his very first ever recording date!! K.D. knew how to put a band together to put his music forward in the best way possible. I transcribed Joe's entire tenor sax solo and my transcription was published in DownBeat magazine some years ago.
this song is just so sweet, it goes right through my skin. It simultaneously grounds me inside myself while transporting me to a far time and place. I can never get enough of it.
Same! His comping becomes increasingly more compelling throughout KDs solo, and then he brings it allllll the way back down for the sax solo. Then there’s a section in the sax solo where he’s trading 4 bars of chordal accompaniment with himself in two different registers. Then he takes a fantastic solo of his own!
HERE IT IS!!! This takes me back to my shack in Waikiki many years ago when I was on the radio over there. All that sweet Hawaiian uke music needed some counterpart and this and SIDEWINDER did it for me. Thanks for this post.
Miles Said It The Drummer Is Time Keeper He Lite The Fire , This Cookin At Its Best A Prodigy And A Teen When This Session Was Recorded ; Incendentially Herbie Hancock Is Lone Survivor Of This Session !
I was wandering who was on the piano because of that funky piano at the start and at 13:15. Herbie! It always brings a smile to find out it is someone great in his early years.
I particularly enjoy Joe Henderson's solo on that great track : it is all at once laid-back and adventurous, soulful and playful ! Would it be crazy to recognize at the beginning of it what will be the theme/bass line for Coltrane's "Acknowledgment" ("A Love Supreme" was issued a year later...) ?
NK, you are over-qualified for this job, thankfully! It almost brings tears to my eyes that this is real music (jazz) in its purest form, and these musicians(!!!!!!!!) played with each other. Thank you for bringing it real. Please do continue.
After hearing Roy Hargrove's superb version of Una Mas on Habana with Chucho Valdes, I had to go back to the source 🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺. One of the best fusions of Hardbop and Latin rhythms.
Ah hahahahahhhhhhhhh DAYUM ok i got you ...but thanks to your info take it easy..I'm now two inches tall now..you...you ...you.......you....... Punk ! (Just kidding)

@@sargeantmgtow7851 22. Born in 1940! Use Google ffs! Also he recorded he famous debut 'Takin Off' the year before and was on Donald Byrd and Jackie Mclean records before this! The album is noteworthy because it was the first released recorded performance of 17 years old Tony Williams!
If you are at a loss at what to play, just play the blues convincingly! Jazz is rooted in the blues, and if you are unable to reference the changes accurately playing the blues is a respectable fallback. But this does not mean that you should gloss over learning how to masterfully play the changes...
I never comment on TH-cam but I have to say this is the only song I can keep listening to for years and still feel the same satisfaction every time.
yea, the compositon is so catchy and diverse, it really never gets old. and so gotta listen to it una mas...

Woooooooooo!!!!! Now, this is music.
Well, nothing more profound than everyday jazz!!
Absolutely astounding solos bk KD and Joe Henderson. Got to be two of the greatest solos of all time!!!
This is cool, listening this in a dark room at night, with a bright window while staring at it drinking warm milk.

That upright bass guves me the visual of a beautifully shaped flaminco dancer just going away..wrapped so wonderfully in this rhythm
I love Butch Warren's playing on this.
The tastiest minimalism! 🎶
So nice to have the entire cut uploaded here. Thanks so much!
Lovely jass mahn I never thought another on his place the best he gives the best others serves love from south india
First time I heard of this was with Roy Hargrove and Crisol, they were on fire. Their version I believe is called Uno Mas
I was wandering who was on the piano because of that funky piano at the start and at 13:15. Herbie! It always brings a smile to find out it is someone great in his early years.
Wondering.
And, 'still' quite relevant, along with many of his contemporaries.

¡Esta canción la quiero en mi boda!
Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan sound quite similar, I think. I love them both.
Purchased this one from the Jazz specialists shop in Liverpool- approx. ’69-70-still have it today - Cavern days but not for this great music!
I'm just discovering kenny dorham and he is a true master of the saxophone and he can run scales with rapadness..... Arthur Tillman

it killed me to find out herbie was only 19 yeahs old ...playing along side these OLD DUDES !?!?
Herbie was 22. Tony was 17. Joe Henderson was 25/26. Warren was 24, so it was the old dude Kenny playing with young cats. Get ur facts correct!

Advait Thite ‘better’ doesn’t do justice to The musicianship of either players.
I think it's just that Dorham is so underrated.
