I bough a Ruger Super Wrangler recently because I had a distinct lack of revolvers in my gun collection. I love the corrosion resistance of the Cerakote, the adjustable rear sights, the better frame material, the simplicity of the two-click hammer, the superior safety (transfer bar), and the pins instead of screws. It will be a good plinker and trainer for my kids.

I've bought 4 Heritage Roughriders 3 were given as gifts. I added blue Locktite to all of them and haven't had any problems with the screws backing out. I own many Rugers but, the Heritage is hard to beat at it's price point. The accuracy is amazing for a low priced gun! Having the safety has been a plus teaching my daughters to shoot. My Dad loves his and I bought the magnum cylinder for his with about $130 into the gun total.

I have a Heritage Rough Rider just like the one in this video. No, it certainly doesn’t have the fit and finish of the Ruger Wrangler. But for a $100 plinker you just can’t beat it. Plus, I just like the classic look of the Rough Rider more. Happy Independence Day to all my fellow 2A supporters! 🇺🇸

I have three Rough Riders. My 11yo daughter loves them. I've had one of them for about 15 years. I'm going to buy more.
I prefer the finish and the click stops when rotating the cylinder on the Rough Rider which makes unloading or ejecting brass easier. The 4 clicks...❤❤❤
I also like the safety on the Rough Rider for teaching or training.
I'm certain that the Wrangler is a good firearm. I just prefer the Rough Rider and i can't find justification for the price discrepancy.
FYI I'm pretty sure Zamak is also used in medical implants and it makes zero difference in rimfire. Heritage makes steel Rough Riders for locales with melting point laws.
Regardless of anything else, thanks for bringing more attention to great training and plinking revolvers that can reasonably serve as self defense with 22 WMR that are generally AFFORDABLE 😁 Happy Independence Day and have a blast 😎👍

I am a lifelong Ruger fan. revolvers, bolt rifles, ARs. Not so much on their pistols, excepting the Mark series 22 pistols. I own 20 plus Ruger firearms. However, I bought a rough rider for a hundred bucks 6.5-inch barrel. 22/22 mag. I have been harvesting game. Squirrels, ground hogs, coons and an armadillo. I love this revolver. Very accurate. I went back and bought two more. A bird's head and a shorter barreled like the one I have. The bird's head is fun. can't hit anything farther than 10 paces. But i feel like I'm Doc Holiday when I wear it at the range. LOL. The short barrel is OK. much harder to shoot. The original revolver is up to a 20-kill count. I love shooting it. And it is very accurate. it is my official Squirrel hunt side arm. Yes, I hated the safety at first. Yes, it's ugly. But it works. and it's in the right place. I have acclimated it. I'm good. 10 stars. spend a hundred. You won't be sorry.

The only pitfall the wragler had was in a indoor range with the lighting it was very difficult to get a true sight picture and see the target down range. Shooting the wrangler outdoors was way better for me. I did change out the grips on the wrangler with rose wood grips and the wider grips improved accuracy of the revolver. I did sell the wrangler and bought a Diamondback Sidekick 22LR/22WMR. Love this gun but the same issue shooting it in a indoor range. I just picked up my new Super Wrangler and added new rose wood grips. What a difference in the sights. I do need to take the super wrangler out to the range soon. The Heritage Rough Rider is an exceptional value. You can buy them as a combo gun or purchase a .22 magnum cylinder separately. You can also buy a birdhead grip and swap out grip frames easily. Heritage has a large inventory of accessories available online. The actions a slick, the guns are very accurate and reliable. Ruger makes fine firearms, but I prefer the Rough Riders. They are great little guns!

Worked in a firearms shop for a couple years, these new Heritage revolvers...the only good thing I can say about them is Heritage was more than happy to repair them when there were issues. They may have been made well at some point in the past I'm sure. Never had a problem with the Wranglers that I can remember, and Ruger's customer service was johnny on the spot for other items if there were issues.

So, I owned a Heritage Rough Rider in .22 Mag and .22 LR. Was a 3.5 inch birdshead model. Wasn't the biggest fan. It had the tendency to overshoot the half cock for loading so you would have to cock the revolver, lower it, and try to get it back to half cock. The loading gate felt loose and like it would just fly off. The fit and finish was meh but the biggest offender was the fact that a couple screws backed out. I tried tightening it down and the threads were stripped out of the Zemack frame. The Wrangler was built stout but I didn't like the grip since I found my thumb constantly slipping off the hammer mid-cocking action. Found that wasn't an issue with the bidshead and wrote Ruger for a year telling them they needed to make a bidshead grip. The only other issue I had with the Ruger was the loading gate. I almost tore my thumbnail off when trying to load when my thumb slipped and caught the underside of my nail on the gates edge. That gate almost needed a flathead screwdriver to open. Even so, I would rather shoot that Ruger any day of the week over a Heritage. I just have so much more confidence in the Ruger Build and Quality Control Standards

I got a Heritage after watching several comparison video's like this. I got the Heritage largely based on it fitting my funds available at the time. One point made in many video's is the two screws on the back strap need to be be blue lock tight down because they will walk out. I also have a EIG Model E15 made in Germany I have no idea how long ago I inherited from my dad. The frame is marked 22LR. The cylinder is marked 22 Magn Germany. The grips have a buffalo on each side on them. It only has three clicks.

  • @miket2120
    @miket2120 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The basic battle between cost, finish and "authenticity". One or two will have to be sacrificed or at least given lessor priority.
The Heritage uses a simpler and cheaper to make hammer block safety, the Wrangler a more expensive. transfer bar system. The Heritage requires the shooter to use it or to keep an empty chamber under the hammer; so it's always the shooters responsibility. The more expensive transfer bar on the Ruger is always there working, so the level of safety is higher and not dependent on the shooter.
The finish plays an important part in cost. Both the Heritage and Wrangler use non-authentic blued steel for the frame to keep the cost affordable. Cast zinc is easier than cast aluminum and holds up well. But the zinc frame looks rounded on the Heritage, giving it a rather less polished fit. Since it's not blued, but coated, it looks, well, cheap. The aluminum on the Wrangler has a wonderful crisp fit and surface to it. This is thanks to Ruger's other business, as a precision metal casting supplier for other companies (Pine Tree Castings), including those not in the firearms business. But aluminum by itself looks totally unauthentic and doesn't blue well, hence the Cerakote. It's a really tough surface, far more durable than many other finishes, but it will never be glossy like blued steel. The grip frame is zinc, also Cerakoted. Ruger decided to go with Cerakote for the barrel, too, instead of blued. From a design point of view, this was a good idea, as it keeps the look of the gun consistent from grip to muzzle. Why then not Cerakote the trigger, hammer and cylinder? Besides the wear factor, especially on the cylinder, it was also looks: they are visual accents according to purpose. Trigger and hammer fire the rounds (one color), cylinder holds the rounds (another color) and grip/frame/barrel complete the system (the final color). The Heritage looks a little disjointed style wise when compared to the Wrangler.
Authenticity or it's lack of it, is a dilemma that can't be resolved (or for some, forgiven) when price has to come into play. It costs more for authenticity, which may keep it out of the purchaser it was intended for, thus negating the whole reason for the gun. Heritage took the more authentic route, to some with mixed results. Ruger uses the "inspired by" mindset and went non authentic with the Cerakote, but some have called it heresy. In both the Heritage and Wrangler, it's the "feel" that's the thing and both do a good, very good job of it. Funny how there wasn't any huge uproar way back, when Ruger put adjustable sights on a Colt SAA patterned revolver way back when...

"The Heritage looks like a cap gun" but nothing on the market today reminds me more of my Mattel Fanner 50 of my youth than the Ruger Wrangler does. Cerakote on a single action isn't an attractive look to me.
And my Heritage didn't need to get replaced due to keyholing. It shot 6 rounds into 1.25" clusters at 25 yards from a machine rest when new and 8,500 rounds and two years later, it still does.

My mom bought a little heritage four and three quarter inch barrel revolver back around 1991. She passed away in 2010 but that little revolver is still going strong. They don't have the same quality as a Colt or a Ruger. The materials are a little cheaper. The workmanship is not the same as Ruger or Colt but they are sturdy little guns. I know that Colt wasn't on this comparison but they are my favorite firearm company. I've just always liked colts. The single action army is the best revolver of all time.

Bought a Wrangler and it shot 3 of 6 rounds very well. The other 3 went wide and made enlongated , not round, holes. Nice Ruger CS lady knew exactly what I was talking about and said send it to them. Got message that they would replace the revolver or send it back with an advisory that it was unsafe to shoot (!??!) Of course I opted for the replacement. The new one came and basically shot the same way - keyholing plus had to beat on the unloading rod to get some of the casings out. Traded the 2nd Ruger for some ammo at a pawn shop and bought a Rough Rider for $109. It shots fine after I put dayglow paint on the front sight (old eyes). This is just my most recent negative experience with Ruger. Getting tired of being their QC department.

The issue with Ruger is sometimes you just want a cowboy/western period looking gun. Their answer has been to give us the wrangler in non-period colours and in the case of other Ruger "six shooter" pistols- pistols that give fudderalore guns a run for their money. Sometimes I just want a pistol that makes me feel like Billy the Kid not one that makes me feel like a 60's boomer who is vicarilously also a space cowboy.

    I've got rough rider.
The fit and finish is a show of low grade cheap manufacturing techniques. It will scratch, the black isn't even,
That 9 shot rough rider with the adjustable fiberoptic sights is a bit more expensive, but will hit a golf ball reliably at 15 yards.
The engineering is a show of how to use those cheap manufacturing techniques to produce reasonable reliability and precision in a firearm.
Yah, clean those thread and apply some locktite.

I use several to practice for currency with my concealed carry or home defense, but I just picked up my Super Wrangler just before Christmas ‘23 and it has to be the most fun of all of them to take to the range. Something oddly satisfying in loading, shooting and unloading these. Cheap to shoot and utterly fun! Wish I’d bought it sooner!

  • @bigbill2444

9:25 - The third click on a SA revolver is functional; it's when the cylinder lock bolt is released so it can lock the cylinder. Something to note, on my Rough Riders (and this one in the video), the third click is actually the full cock position (it's not supposed to be). In this third click position, you can fire the gun, but the cylinder is not locked in position. Watch the video carefully, and after that third click, the hammer stays back (full cock), but pulling it back further, you see the cylinder turn and lock into position. This is a fault in the gun's design; firing the gun with the cylinder not locked means the bullet is not lined up with the barrel, and will likely shave some lead off when fired.
I've seen this on every Rough Rider (and my Barkeep) I've handled, even in a store's inventory.

The comment about the 22 mag being a better self defense option over the 22LR is probably not true unless you go with the 7.5” barrel numerous gel and chrono tests on You Tube prove this there is very little benefit in short barreled handguns with the 22WMR as most of the powder burn occurs outside of handgun length barrels but definitely is true in a rifle but that 7.5” or longer barrel might capitalize somewhat on the extra powder but the Federal Punch ammo in handguns does give you as good of velocities and penetration on the 22 LR cartridge in comparison to a test against 22WMR search the internet for chrono tests and ballistic gel test, as an example Tools & Targets videos has numerous test with both chrono and gel tests
