  • It's good to see more handgun options in 380 ACP for new shooters, those with weaker hands strength or are recoil sensitive, that aren't pocket pistols. The Ruger Security-380 has a 10/15 +1 magazine capacity, Lite Rack Slide and is low recoil. #RugerSecurity380 #380ACP #Ruger
    Thanks go to Ruger for sending the Security-380 for this review and Fiocchi USA for supplying the ammunition.

      When was the 380 ever out of style in the past 30 years? It is tied every year with 40 Smith & Wesson for the second most popular caliber in centerfire handgun ammo sales in America.

      @@Followme556 Around 15-20 years ago when concealed carry became more common many of the modern pocket 380s like Kel-tec and Ruger LCP became popular. 380 ammo production had been low for many decades because the classic blowback 380s like PPK were no longer popular. With this re-interest in 380 pistols ammo production never caught up to the increased c.c. demand and was expensive. I've noticed post covid panic the ammo manufactuers have finally made 380 production a higher priority and now you can buy 380 ammo for around $15.

      @@POETICMIND2002 Look online, I buy mostly from Midway and J&G, but friends have done really well buying from owners on user groups. Lots of people don't sell the ammo when they sell a firearm, as gun stores offer really crap prices; also, a lot of folks figure they'll buy something else that uses it and then the ammo sits for years. But properly-stored ammunition can sit for a couple of decades, no problem. Then if course you also have estate sales, which are great.

    I am a bigger guy and shoot a 40 with no issues, that said I love 380. There a ton of advantages to owning one for home/personal defense that most "gun experts" miss. 380 is a great home defense option if you don't want to stress about a bullet going through your wall and your next door Neighbor's wall. 380 is a great option for single hand shooting in the event you can only free up the use of one hand. 380 under 30 yards has enough power to be more than effective, with less chance of over Pentatration. I love that 380 is getting some love and the fact one of the best names in firearms... Ruger has one for around 350 bucks... awesome.

    I'm I big guy, always carried full size guns. But in 21 I destroyed my dominant right shoulder at work. Been through two major procedures getting ready for another one. It has left my right arm useless for the most part. I've carried a max 380 ever since then in my left front pocket. This gun definitely has my attention. It would be great to get close to a full size hand gun again. I think I might be able to pull it off with my right arm again with this gun. Thank you so much for doing such a great review on this firearm sir. You never know what life is going to throw at you, it can change in a second. But with either of his Colt 1903 , CZ 70 or even an Ortgies he can put a golf ball size group of 6+ rounds rapidly on target at 7 yards. That's nothing I'd want to get hit with.

    For those who criticize the .380 as not being powerful enough compared to 9mm, the thing to remember is ALL pistol calibers, except something like a .454 Casull, are sub-optimal man stoppers. That's why a pistol is the gun you use to go get your rifle or shotgun. Shot placement is critical for pistols, as even .45 HP's have been recorded unable to put down an adrenaline fueled addict. Even with a shot to the heart, a person can last two minutes, enough time to kill you if they are committed. So if a .380 makes it easier to have follow up shots to aim at the head , that's fine. Most perps won't stick around anyway, if you pull out your CC. Compact conceal pistols are not combat pistols to engage a horde of zombies. They are defensive pistols to survive a short range encounter.

    As a female, purchasing my first handgun, the ease of use was very important. I have pretty good hand strength for triggering but my big concern was racking the slide. I was born without a thumb on my left hand and have had to learn how to do many tasks just a little differently than others, and I can do most things just like everyone else. Even the S&W EZ was tough for me. While I’m sure with practice I could learn to rack even the strongest slide but really like the easy pull of this Ruger.

  • @nacho_2434
    @nacho_2434 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I’d like to add that 380 is not only a good option for as most people say, “recoil sensitive” or “weaker hands”, but also for realistic less than perfect shooting position. Not criticizing you for saying it, your channel rocks, just saying most people use those terms in general. So for anyone reading this, have you ever tried shooting your 9mm or above caliber in a less than perfect position? Not standing with your feet perfectly pointing at your target, not holding the firearm with both hands, slightly slouching, all less than perfect shooting positions than you may be in an emergency situation. So, in an emergency situation where you’re not in a perfect shooting position, you will be more accurate with a 380. If you’re moving and shooting in awkward positions with a 380, and your attacker is too with a larger caliber, you’re more likely to put shots on target than your attacker. To all, just think about those considerations, when thinking about accuracy in less than perfect shooting positions with a “recoil sensitive” or “weak hand” caliber..

Its super easy to rack, its just the right weight with a 15 round magazine to not feel front heavy, and its a simple reliable design. Ive seen 1000 round torture tests for this gun that only ended up having 2 jams and that was because they varied the amunition. Recently, because my hands ARE getting old, I put my FN HiPower in the safe, and took out my Browning BDA and Beretta Cheetah. There really were no modern alternatives I could find.
    But this? This looks GREAT! It looks to me to be an EXCELLENT alternative, and at a good price point, as well.
    Every time I see a tiny pistol introduced in .380 (or 9 mm, for that matter), I flash back to my bad experiences with the tiny KelTec P3AT. At 8.3 ounces unloaded, with the super-small grip, it was just painful to shoot. Those issues appear to have been resolved in the Ruger Security-.380. I have several 380 pistols. For many years my only carry gun was a Mauser HSc manufactured in 1970 that I bought new when stationed in Germany. But in the sprit of this video I also have a Browning BDA, a Beretta model 81 that I installed a 380 barrel in, an older Bersa that I inherited from a dear friend it differs from yours in the magazine release, it is above the trigger on mine, I also have Baby Browning 1911s in 22 & 380. I seldom carry a 380 these days as I have acquired more appropriate pistols but as I get older, I just turned 73, I am looking more and more at my various 380s. My personal favorite is the Beretta 81. While it is very similar to the Browning BDA (in fact it is a BDA barrel I put in it) I like the open slide of the Beretta and the 1911 style safety. I believe if you are going to carry a 380, more rounds between reloads is better. The Bersa is easier to conceal I can carry it in the front pocket of some pants, the BDA and the 81 both need a belt holster. "HIGH CAPACITY" 380s are not new I have 3 Savage pistols that predate WWI. All 3 have double stack magazines that predate the Browning HiPower by 30 years. Mine are all chambered in 32acp but they were also available in 380 over 100 years ago.

    Well over a decade ago Taurus produced a single action hammer fired double stack 15+1 .380acp. It was one of the most pleasant shooting and reliable pistols that I've owned. I installed a picatinny laser and it was surprisingly accurate. Wifey took it in the divorce and ever since I've wanted a 'fuller' size high capacity .380. Even though Ruger is a little late to the game I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one of these. And without a doubt it will definitely be a superior handgun to that old Taurus 638.

I’m not big on handgun optics to begin with (so maybe it’s just me), but I certainly am not looking to add weight and dimension to a sub-compact gun. The only reason I’d be using a sub-compact to begin with is because size and weight is a concern. But again, maybe that’s just me.

But, if this 380 is for self-defense then you would be better off practicing at the range doing point shooting because you will never have time to look at any type of sight system when your life is on the line and it is shoot now or die! also if you have to take a long-distance shot, you may want to think it over unless you are a cop or you are stopping a mass shooter in progress. I was really interested in this pistol but due to not being optic ready I'll don't think I'll pick it up. Great video and Happy New Years.

    I look to your videos for a very comprehensive explanation and breakdown of all the different types of firearms you review. For the first time I have found you were mistaken about a feature of the security 380. That is that the magazine catch is in fact not reversible. I discovered this over sight after I picked mine up from my FFL and attempted to reverse the magazine catch. I completely read through the owner’s manual and there was nothing mentioning how to reverse the magazine catch. I then disassembled the magazine catch and spring from the frame and confirmed that it is not reversible despite its shape and look. I bring this up out of respect and to further your knowledge of this firearm. Everything else you have stated about it is on point and factual.

    Nice pistol. Looks similar to my Beretta 84, and my 85b. They are excellent pistols for anyone. Thanks for the video.

    Another nice offering from Ruger. This looks like a nice pistol for those who don't like the snappiness of the tiny pocket .380's like the Smith Bodyguard or the Ruger LCP series. If you're going to carry a small caliber like .380, having 15 rounds onboard is a big plus. For those who have no issues with recoil, this pistol makes little sense because it's nearly as big as a 9mm so you may as well just carry a sub compact 9.

      Even if you have no issue with recoil this still makes sense.
      Its nice to have a firearm that you can more easily control and do quicker follow-up shots with while under pressure.

    This is the nicest looking new gun I've seen on the market, and good rd ct. Those realy small ones are hard to get a good master grip on and get accurate shots. There's new 380 HP defensive ammo more effective than just ten years ago. Thank Scootch00

    I have a Ruger Security 380. I love it. My wife loves Bersa 380s because of first shot double action. She has 2 Bersa Handguns, CC and Thunder. She is nervous of striker fire handguns. Our 380acp Defense Ammo is Lehigh Xtreme 68gr. 14 - 15 inch Ballistics. Ammo runs great. No malfunctions. Equal to 115 gr 9mm Ammo. I mostly carry S&W Shield Plus 9mm. Because of G9, Lehigh, Underwood ammo I bought and trust. I will carry 380acp without thinking twice.

    I bought this pretty much immediately when it came out. I bought it as a training platform. I’m new to shooting and sensitive to 9mm recoil. Sucks that 380 is a more expensive round, but should be worth it

      @herbderbler1585 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another good training gun you might consider is the Taurus TX-22. I picked one up for $270 and it's fantastic. The magazines are plastic, not thrilled about that, but they seem sturdy enough. They required just a touch a dry lube which is not something I've ever had to do with any other gun, but once I did that they run fantastic. Comes with two 16 round mags, and 22LR is as cheap and easy to shoot as it gets. The feel and function is a perfect analog to modern striker 9MMs, so it's a fantastic training tool.
      Mind you, I wouldn't rely on 22LR for self-defense, especially in an automatic. Rimfires just aren't that trustworthy. But since you got a nice 380, you're all set in that department. People tend to belittle 380 just because it's not 9mm, but when you're shooting it out of something like the Security-380 with more than a mouse gun barrel, it's a perfectly serviceable and reliable self-defense cartridge.

      @@herbderbler1585 Very True, I second the Taurus TX22 as well. One of their best and its USA made like their other newer 9 mms which get great reviews. 16 rounds in a 22lrpistol is still not very common which is weird to me. Taurus nailed it. These 380s would b the next step up

    I can honestly say the 380 is good for self defense close up. Since this is a public forum I'm unable to elaborate. The caliber controversy will likely never stop. My husband and I don't own this model Ruger pistol at this time. We're seriously thinking about purchasing one. Thank you for sharing your video 🙏

    Great video! I've been looking for something for my 21 year old Granddaughter to carry and keep next to the bed. I think this pretty much made my mind up. Especially at the price! I've owned Rugers before and have never had an issue with any of them, so I wouldn't have any concerns with her having one of these.

    I love my first gen LCP and wouldn't trade it for two of these. However this seems like a solid option for older or weaker handed individuals. Good for Ruger for helping bring something for those types of folks. Only thing I don't care for is Rugers slide treatments they will rust faster than many other guns but just have to stay on top of keeping it wiped free of sweat daily.

    • @Brian-oc8fj
      @Brian-oc8fj ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the black oxide coating on many Ruger automatics will rust fairly easily if not regularly coated with gun oil...
      Get the slide Cerakote coated for $50 - 75$, I have that on my Ruger and it worked like magic. Many many companies both online and perhaps local to you can do just the slide or more of the gun if you choose. Can choose black or a wide range of colors or patterns (more $). Especially recommended for a gun you plan to carry often vs have in storage.

    Looks like a nice little pistol. My current cc is a Kel-Tec P11 . It's small, light & holds 10+1. There aren't many upgrades for it, it's factory sprung very heavy & is a bit of a handful

    Your channel is my go-to for gun reviews! Congrats all your success. I am a big fan of Ruger, but the non-captive take down pin in Security-9, Security-380, EC9s... You would think they would have learned their lesson with the old Ruger Mark 22's (I have a Mark II) with the very difficult pin to remove, then the time to get the trigger guide lined up when you put the pin back in place. The latest Ruger Mark IV has a one button take down. A captive removal take-down level should have been on the top of the list, and a requirement, for any new pistols.
