Benchmade Claymore (the land-mine, not the sword). In a time where everybody tries to convince people that knives are tool, naming a knife after a people-maiming device that is banned in a large part of the world seems stupid.

    • @celebral_pelosi

@@etherealicer Maybe it's only you who wants to convince people that knives are strictly tools. They obviousl want to market this particular model to a tactical/military crowd and thus convince them that this is a tool that fits that role (which some knives have to dispite your personal views of how things should be). his is not quantum physics. Maybe you just like to project your moral parameters onto others and then act suprised if they don't hold up to them which is pretty dishonest and nonsensical.

Regular clips also have a lower/flatter profile than the loop over deep carry clips, so for working knives they will tend to be more comfortable in hand and have less hot spots. Also, as you mentioned it’s easier to pull out of pocket especially with gloved hands.

For m4 rust, use bar keeprs friend, if that doesnt work use flitz. Rust eraser's can scratch, but you can always get someone to grind it, stonewash it, or hand satin it for money at a later point in life.
Then use fluid film. Spray it in and wipe it off. Leaves a trace amount on to avoid rust and patina. Re apply after use. Other oil can be used but use food safe and anything that wont oxidize and go rancid. Apply and wipe off and their will be a tiny layer on it.
Note that fluid film is lanolin based and some people are allergic to lanolin. Same for mineral oil etc.

Hey David, I have a real question I hope you're willing to consider for one of these FAQ vids: Can you point out some camping-style knives that would excel at food prep? Obviously I'm interested in somewhat longer, thinner blades, with good acute slicing geometry and any other helpful qualities. I've got some fixed-blades I like as all-purpose outdoors knives but they tend to be thick slabs of metal that would make a job like carrot-slicing pretty miserable. Thanks for any help and love these videos, thanks to all for them too.

A question on cleaning folders: I never use my pocket knives for food because I am hesitant to clean them the way I clean a kitchen knife. I’ll use them to open a dirty box, cut an old rope, or occasionally dispatch a tick, and I don’t typically clean them with more than a wipe on my pant leg. If you intend to use an edc folder for food, would you clean it with dish soap? Would that be bad for the mechanisms? Can you adequately dry the inside of a folder?

What angle and grind should be on a knife for lighter tasks? Also, what role does the blade steel play in what edge the knife should have (Specifically CPM 20CV but I'd also like to know more about S35VN, Maxamet, M4 and D2)? ( I’m a fat guy and and do not have the grace or agility to excel in the tactical realm), but still prefer ease of access. Besides that, who cares if anyone can see the butt of your knife? If they can see a pocket clip, they already know you have a knife. As long as we aren’t acting like some devilish serial killer, they should have no reason to fear us.

Knife clips are for people who don’t mind losing them ! my pocket knives are carried for practical use, not for playing with, and live at the bottom of my weak hand jeans pocket (left in my case). Also if you actually have to use a knife, clips are bloody uncomfortable, just make something that takes a few minutes, like for instance, a thumb stick, so you have to cut a one inch stave, trim it, cut the horns off and chamfer the three ends, when you have done that, tell me you didn’t feel the clip, Eejit !!

I'm fairly new to the knife world and have a couple of budget knives already. Was wanting to get my first nice knife in titanium within a $250 budget. What would you recommend? Also, I've been watching your videos for quite some time now. Definitely has intrigued me enough to get more into the knife world. Keep up with the awesome videos!

DCA, knives with sharp spines are obviously good for striking up ferro rods but as you know, that creates quite the “burnt edge” from the extreme high heat the rod creates. What’s the best way to remove these defects from the blade/spine? Thanks in advance. Gary.

Hi David. Love the channel! Question!
The Ontario Rat 1 might be the best hard use budget folder. Owned my many, respected by all. I have the AUS 8 version and I love it. I'm interested in the KnifeCenter exclusive in Micarta handles. From the pictures it seems to me that the blade has a slightly shallower belly. Are my eyes tricking me? Cheers!

    • @knifecenter
      @knifecenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, Ontario produced these with slightly more drop to the spine which has the effect of making the belly look less substantial (wish I could pull off the same trick with my physique!). I actually prefer the shape, but its all just personal preference really. -DCA

Aircraft aluminum could be many different alloys but mainly a 6000 series focusing in on si and mg. It's nothing special .... a but harder with the mg and the si really just adds a bit flex so the aluminum doesn't break as easily when bent.

Commenting on keeping away rust. Years ago I started shaving with straight razors all of which are carbon steel and at the price you pay for great blades that'll last a lifetime you want to protect them. With that being said I one day picked up a smiths honing stone that came with their solution...says right on the bottle "contains rust inhibitors" tried it out on my cheapest which was a Boker Elite straight razor...I have never had to worry about it since. No signs of any pitting on the blade, looks like new and I can honestly leave it on the sink after shaving without properly drying it. Now I use Smith's on all my blades. Oh, WD-40 works great on OTF's normally get a lot of pocket lint in my Ultratech Spartan's (daily knives), normally disengage the spring remove the back screw/glass breaker and spray down the hole then set blade down on a paper towel.

WD40 is not good to lub since has chemicals to remove rust and moist, but could eventually corrode you blades. I use Super Lub and is fantastic, you can try KPL. Also, I remove the clips of all my knives since they create a hot spot. If I'm going to use gloves, I make sure my knife is reachable. My Spyderco Smock, for example, has a kydex sheath so I can wear it as neck knife in some occasions or I use the Buck 110 on the sheath clipped to the belt. Same with the BM Crooked River

Question for next Q and A: I have knives of the typical type shown above (flippers etc) what I call a uni-tasker. I've seen a few videos about the Victorinox like the camper or huntsman, and they seem more practical. I've even seen a video of a gentleman saving his own live from two robbers and the Victorinox was what helped him make a bad guys day very bad. Why is it people seem to gravitate so much towards these single-blade uni-taskers instead of the SAKs? As a practical edc, especially with the new firestarting products you can purchase for the SAK's, seems like a no brainer. Just wanted to know your take prior to my purchasing a SAK.

As an engineer who works for an airline - yes, I cringe every time I see "aircraft grade aluminum" used in marketing, if for no other reason than that there are so many versions of aluminum used in an airplane that it's a meaningless qualifier. Completely useless unless you say exactly what kind of aluminum and then I can evaluate if you're using that material in an appropriate context for your product.

I've used several knives in the kitchen, depending on the situation. For slicing tomatoes, I like the Benchmade Bugout or Hogue Deka, because they have very thin, sharp blades. For other things, such as vegetables, I've used the Hogue K320 or the GiantMouse Ace Grand. The Quiet Carry Drift with the Vanax SuperClean is a smaller knife that works great in the kitchen, because you can simply wash it under the tap or dunk the entire knife in some soapy water and rinse it. This is particularly easy with the all-metal non-G10 versions.
You probably should disassemble and clean the knife regularly, if you are using them in the kitchen a lot to ensure that there are no small food particles sticking to something.
