  • Taking a first look at the auto sensing rain wiper feature in the 2017.50.3 firmware release on January 1st, 2018 in the Tesla Model X 75D.
    We look at the new options in the settings and try out a few different spray patterns. Every time the wiper control stick is touched is shown in the video, there is no other interaction being performed. You might see my hand move a couple times but that is only to signal my friend.

    Awsome furrow test. On the point and professional. Loving it! Subscribed.

    Do the same test in the dark. With low beams on but nothing in front of vehicle.

    Great test and thanks for taking the time to experiment and post this video. One question I do have but couldn't tell from the video was whether the wipers avoid "parking" themselves below the windshield line after each auto-wipe interval when using either of the two auto settings? Recall that when you request a single wipe by pushing the end of the stock the wipers unpark, wipe and then repark themselves. Thanks.

      M. V. P. I did notice them park once but I don't think we waited long enough between the tests. I'll have to look into it and report back.

    So... which setting should I use for the car?... high sensitivity or low sensitivity?

    • @GeekyNuggets
      @GeekyNuggets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't personally noticed a difference between the two. My assumption is that the higher sensitivity mode is best for drier climates where you want it to react more to mist or light sprinkles. I always use the lower setting but I'm in an area where rain is generally fairly "wet" once it's actually falling.

    Do the low beams come on if the lights are set to ‘Auto’? If so, do they come on as soon as you select automatic wiping or only when water is actually detected?

    Why do the wipers spread so far apart

    • @ValleyGeek
      @ValleyGeek ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's the angle of the video or because the window is larger than most other cars. In person they look about the same distance apart as normal wipers.

  • @DonieKelly
    @DonieKelly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I hope you get a chance to test it for real on the road with real rain :) The artificial tests may not reflect reality of how this works.

  • @tarassu

    BMW's reduce auto wipers (or manual) by one step if vehicle is at standstill. So RAPID CONTINUOUS is not even available if not driving as it is highest level.
    Also yes, when changing sensitivity to "higher" one wipe is a must. Tesla, fix that!

      Does neural net means something to you? This is a first in the automotive industry detecting / measuring rain with the camera(s).

    • @DonieKelly
      @DonieKelly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know exactly how they are doing it but I just have to laugh how complicated it has to be... It's a little overkill don't you think? Yea, maybe it'll be a little better but assigning a neural net and camera to working the wipers seems a little over engineered to me... unless it's at least 10x better for it. But is it? Sorry if I'm making it sound trivial, I do understand how complicated a solution this is but the problem doesn't warrant it. I'd rather seem them putting CPU cycles to self driving.

      Do you know anyone who actually has a car with rain sensors that work good, mine doesn't in my Volvo, very unpredictable.

    • @DonieKelly
      @DonieKelly 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      alarjak mine too but they work 99% of time as expected. They may even be worse with this solution. It’s a tricky problem for a camera and NN.

    • @alarjak
      @alarjak 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't like mine at all, i have to manually adjust the sensitivity all the time. I rather use the slowest manual setting, works much better.

    I am deeply excited. My car gets 15 this year and has already automatic wipers as standard and not as beta software....

    • @izybit
      @izybit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      True, but your car has a dedicated rain sensor while now Tesla uses the Autopilot cameras to see the rain and activate the wipers.

    • @motivase
      @motivase 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      which obviously was an idiotic idea because it was not possible to implement that until series start. So where is the benefit? I am sure it also did cost a lot more due to the programming hours invested in order to get this stuff going. And the hours would have been spent a lot better in improving the autonomous driving which is still far behind Musk's promises. Wouldn't Tesla buyers not be so in love with the company ....

    • @izybit
      @izybit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You do not see the bigger picture.
      A dedicated rain sensor costs money to buy, to install, to inspect, to service, to keep in stock for years to come.
      It does its job good enough but can never do anything else or improve in any meaningful way.
      By not installing it in cars Tesla will save millions in the long run which pretty much covers the software development costs.
      Plus, they now have the flexibility to "play" with it and offer better functionality and further improvements down the road.
      It's a no-brainer really.
      As for the dedicated sensor in the old Teslas (and in many other cars) a lot of people were really unhappy with how it worked but they could never do anything about it. A take it or leave it type of situation.

    • @motivase
      @motivase 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I work in the business. A dedicated sensor will probably cost below a dollar. There is no maintainance and inspection and an off shelf component before Tesla came into life. It is far away from a no brainer. And besides that neither the customer nor the manufacturer has to play with a series production car. This was just antother brainchild of Elon like when he told Mobileye we don't need them anymore and then went for a worse solution. This is a car not a smartphone.

    • @izybit
      @izybit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you are in the business you know that the sensor will eventually fail and in some cases it will fail prematurely.
      Mobileye walked away from Tesla and this happened around the time Model 3 was coming into production causing additional issues to the dev teams. Tesla had to work fast and create the AP2 suite in order to get some basic functionality out the door.
      It took them a lot more time to achieve parity with AP1 but we do not really know what happened behind the scenes (other than removing that Apple exec and placing a new director).

    Y'all are wasting a lot of water lol

    • @toddwright662
      @toddwright662 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's winter in Seattle, and we have and typical snowpack in the mountains so far this year. Wasting water is not really an issue in this region this time of year and will not be until summer in a typical snowpack year. We try not to waste water, but we are not at the level of conservation that is absolutely required in other parts of the country.
