Well, that was a long one...Did anyone make it to the end lol? Either way, thanks for checking it out, and I'll see ya next month! I'll leave you with this question: Which gem do you think is best mom? -Jess
PrideBrary idk about everyone else but I love ur long vids-more gay!!! Also Garnet’s not only the best mom but the best character in SU period. Lol at least that how I feel. *fingers crossed for the giveaway 🤞 *
@@charlieroberts8233 actually I think rainbow uses he/him pronouns! So does his fusion with his dad. Stvonnie uses she/her and I think the rest of Steven's fusions use they/them.
The thing is, Rose being reveled as pink diamond does have a lot to do with their relationship. Ruby and Sapphire were told outright that them being together was the answer. They took it as the answer to all of their questions on the nature of their being as Garnet, while Rose most likely took it as the answer to how to step up the rebellion, reclassifying her goal as to fight for gems along with the endemic earth life, with Garnet as the icon of gem freedom from home-world society. Ruby and Sapphire founded their relationship on shared experiences and developed understanding for one another such that they could maintain their fusion for extended time periods, but they weren't on the scale of established love prior to meeting Rose, the initial stages of developing love yes but not in the state we see her in during the show. Garnet said it herself "Love takes time, and love takes work." I think that Ruby and Sapphires relationship prior to meeting Rose wasn't solid yet, and Rose was the solidifier that built one of the major foundations of their relationship. When the image of Rose was shaken by the reveal, that foundation was compromised and put the entire relationship into question. With Sapphires strong reaction to her perceived negligence in not predicting that Rose was hiding her identity, Garnet was barely able to hold together and she broke up, even with Ruby seemingly taking it in relative stride and staying level headed. This is why Ruby's proposal includes a solution to the foundation Rose filled, the "reason for being Garnet" for lack of a better name. Ruby wants Garnet to be defined by her and Sapphires decision and no one elses. So yeah.
Mike Paskell I couldn't have said it better myself! I agree, I think +PrideBrary has some awesome, right on points here until she gets to the last arc. Ruby talks about it at length during The Question - learning that Rose lied to them (about the rebellion, who they were fighting, and the implications of all that) absolutely threw the two of them the same way Pearl's deception in Cry for Help threw them. I know I'm not the only fan to have noticed the role reversal that we saw in Keystone Motel - Ruby was furious at Pearl, while Sapphire knew that things would work out, even though she was equally as upset; in NWOFA, SAPPHIRE was furious at Rose, while Ruby knew things could work out. The difference of course was that in the latter, it was their very relationship that Sapphire called into question. Again, Ruby TALKS about this - even since she came out of the ground, she's always been paired up with someone and this was the first time she got to experience stuff as Ruby; however, as she later admits, she misses Sapphire and to reiterate what Garnet says in KIT, Ruby feels like a part of her is missing. She WANTED to get together with Sapphire, but not in the way they had gotten together in the first place. Their fusing was a fluke the first time and done in respect and budding romance (as you stated), there's no way I believe those two didn't split numerous times during the war. Rose gave them the permission if you will and acceptance to be Garnet; their feelings for each other is what keep them together AS Garnet, however it was their understanding of themselves and what that brings to the table that made THEM decide on being Garnet forever. I almost wished we got more on Sapphire's side. I think NWOFA was more focused on Pearl & Pink's relationship, rather than Sapphire's relationship with Ruby, though the former was going through a crisis. I actually think we got more from her during her wedding vows than anything else.
The wish for more of a character's perspective and highlight in this show is basically a constant for me. There are a lot of stuff we are just left to guess at for internal thought processes which is useful from a show perspective but I feel the limitation of time for standard episodes makes this happen more than necessary for the narrative as a whole. hence why I like that more cartoons are moving to online and content creators have more freedom in episode length.
Agreed. I mean, the amount of story we've gotten in 11 minutes is astounding, especially among both adult and kids shows which can go 22 or 42 minutes. We're currently rewatching Game of Thrones and showing it to a friend who had never seen it (thankfully we have time). I never read the books and even I thought the first few episodes sorta dragged on, but I understood that it was to bring those who hadn't read the books up to speed on all of these characters, who they were, what they do, etc. But even then, a lot of character development didn't happen immediately. SU almost did it from the beginning and just expanded on it. And again, manages to do that and more in just 11 minutes.
After watching the movie I noticed that instead of the rings falling to the ground when Garnet got poofed, they poofed with her and when she returned the rings were there ^.^
You know who else has a healthy, good fusion, that takes very little synchronising to fuse, and can be sustained for the longest time we’ve seen for a by-choice non-perma fusion? Steven and Connie 👀
(MOVIE SPOILERS) Steg also happened very easily and quickly once they tried. Which makes sense, as they have a very honest, easy and loving father-son relationship in general. I'm betting under other circumstances they could stay that way for a while and have a lot of fun.
Ruby and Sapphire's wedding kiss is probably the best cartoon kiss to ever exist! Also, lesbian space rocks is my favourite description of the gems, lmao
Jim's numba 1 fan can I say and this is just from my experience I’ve been ridiculed with heterophobia when it comes to this show I drew me and my boyfriend as a fusion and I got hate cuz we were a straight couple
Let'sgetrightintothecripplingdeppression trust me it does being labeled as a homophobe cuz I rejected another girl . And I’m aware fandoms can be absolute scum
@Let'sgetrightintothecripplingdeppression yeah im a lesbian and even i know that heterophobia IS a thing. its just,, hating on straight couples. thats it. i was a little heterophobic because of how insecure i was about my own sexuality for a a few years. it exists.
I actually thought Sapphire's exclamations about how she should've known was actually pretty well in character. Not for Garnet but for Sapphire alone. When Garnet questions herself about her future-vision, it's in a calmer sense as though Ruby is doing her best to keep Sapphire calm about it and probably had the idea to be random with Steven. That idea was probably what kept her together then. Sapphire was made to know everything. And while she's learned that she can't do that, I think it upset her that she never doubted what Rose said despite how it was during a time when she still thought she could know everything and was learning that lesson. But even if it was just a plot device to throw the wedding, it's still worth it. Lol.
Smiling Vagabond But that's not how the show views it, which is why in this video only Lapis' was focused on- as Jasper gets bashed in the show every time she appears.
@Ella Waters Um no. When Malachite first fused Lapis' only intentions were to keep Jasper down as she had never been in control before (Mentioned in the show). She only knocks Jasper off the boat to protect Steven because Steven has BABIED her. Her depression and PTSD doesn't excuse abuse.
@@boybriar Lapis did that because he freed her from the mirror and healed her gem instead of keeping her locked up for even more time . He was the first one to try to help and understand her too . It was her way to pay back Steven for his kindness
This show helped me so much. From understanding my own gender and sexual identity, to understanding abuse both inflicted on and by me. No matter what, I'll always love, support and celebrate Rebecca Sugar and their creations.
That's exactly how I feel. I'm so grateful that this show exists and I'm so glad that Rebecca chose to put her creations out there, and that she basically had a hand in shaping the new me. The me after drugs and having no feelings. This show was therapeutic for me because when I regained my feeling abilities... I felt this show so much
Well garnet is mostly revealed to you season 3 reveals the broken spoilers from of here for you it reveals the broken gems that are shattered they have no idea of whats happening in the world around them they are trying to find other gem shards or missing pieces of themselves to be whole again
Guys, Jasper *and* Lapis are in the wrong. Jasper was going to _shatter_ Steven. Lapis saved Steven. Jasper thought she was going to get what she wanted. Lapis isn’t perfect, neither is Jasper. They both r kinda badeeze
@@penguinstudios29 How?? Jasper was insulting Amy from the start of the episode. Plus Amy did challenge Jasper to a fight and Jasper doesn't seem like the type to back down a fight. Look you guys, Malachite obviously represents an abusive relationship, with Jasper being the main abuser and Lapis Lazuli being the victim with also being a sub abuser. This is shown with... Jasper being the main abuser shown evidence: The first time she was introduced she was *dragging* Lapis around She hauled Lapis down while she was trying to escape Her trying to convince they should fuse to fight the Crystal Gems after the ship explored, using Lazuli's past against herself, Her trying to continue the horrible relationship between her and Lapis to get more power when she approached them on the boat We don't even know the things she to Lapis did while they were on the ship. Lapis being the victim evidence: Lapis pulling up walls/defensive mechanism against Peridot even when Peridot was trying to be friendly (Lapis does have a right to be mad, she just wanted to go home and got imprisoned ) Lapis trying to *avoid* *water* because it brings up memories of her being in the ocean with Jasper (The w a t e r, mind you. Her element. Her power.) Her showing fear when Jasper appeared on the boat Her resiting Blue's EONS of depression waves with Lapis saying she felt worse Lapis being the sub abuser: Her blaming everything on Jasper Her admitting that she liked blaming things on Jasper I wouldn't say her imprisoning Jasper is her being selfish, she was trying to protect Steven with her being a sacrifice A link to an amazing video explaining their relationship in Lapis' POV th-cam.com/video/peYHRRgb0EE/w-d-xo.html Jasper and Lapis are two flawed characters (pretty much everyone n the show lmao), Jasper being an insecure, narcissistic bully and Lapis being a traumatized victim of abuse and imprisonment with rightful rage. I can't say I like Jasper but I like her as a character that got isolated and lonely since she separated herself from people who are below her. This is shown by her always being defeated by fusion (the bond between two or more gems or people) and the fusions she was apart of, the other parties of the fusion didn't want anything to do with her after the fusion. Lapis is a cool character with her element (water meaning purity) contradicting herself (dark, traumatized). Lapis will run anytime danger comes around, not wanting to be imprisoned anymore. She learned that her home that she once knew doesn't exist anymore and the one she has on Earth is one worth fighting for. I really respect Lapis for taking a step in the right direction with her declining Jasper's fusion request and realizing that what they had wasn't healthy. Also, Jasper threated Steven that she was gonna shatter him, so Lapis had the right to yeet Jasper outta there lmao
everyone is gay in this show: garnet, perl (she is obviously in love with rose), fusion between steven and connie is a gender neutral character, etc etc etc.
t r e m o r s Gems technically don’t have a gender. They do go by she and her, but since they are gems, they are genderless. So actually, Garnet isn’t Lesbian. 🙂
Why did rose lie make them unfuse ? Same reason the subreddit was on fire and half of them was calling Rose selfish and childish, sapphire and ruby had different s point of view on what was the war about and why they were trusting in rose quartz leadership (the other half understood pink choice), but the reveal that all of it was a lie disynchronize them. Sapphire did really believe that this was the right fight and the right leader, ruby wasn't carrying that much (I think), so when the curtains fall down sapphire was on fire (lol) and ruby not and this caused them to unfuse
I was smiling so hard during the proposal and wedding. I was right next to my brother so he probably thought I was weird but I couldn't help it, it was just so cute and GAY.
I was sitting next to my nine (now 10)year old sister and she said"wait.theyre both girls?" And I said yes. She said"okay"at least I think she did. But I was proud of her for just accepting it and for not being wierded out by it.
This was 9 months ago, I could've been a father by now, no I couldn't have, I'm gay, but still. Now, Pearl is gae, but Garnet IS gae. Garnet win. End o discussion
Garnets breakup after they learned about pink diamond wasn't really about them both feeling betrayed, but it struck a chord with Sapphire because she's supposed to see everything and she trusted Rose enough to not do that to her. Ruby wasn't reacting to the news about Pink Diamond but about Sapphires reaction to it.
I think the rose lie being so jarring makes sense. ultimately they break up for less than 24 hours. Rose was the first person who affirmed them after they were shamed into unfusing which is huge! I also think that Rose's validation especially as the original crystal gem leader (a role garnett heavily identifies with and is proud of) was really intrisic to her inner monologue for those 5k years.
It really doesn't, though. The people on Earth don't think there's anything wrong with Ruby and Sapphire's relationship, so they suffer no hardship, and homeworld's hatred for the relationship has nothing to do with gender, but with relationships themselves. Basically, the entire "Steven Universe addresses LGBT issues" thing is bullcrap. All SU does in terms of LGBT is celebrate it by making it as blatant as possible, sometimes even at the expense of character dynamics and plot coherence.
Astrithor because people on earth don’t know they’re a fusion, I think OP is talking about the discrimination on homeworld. Blue Diamond literally laughed in her face at the thought of letting her into the party, that’s discrimination
I could be wrong but I was under the impression they unfused because now they were "allowed to question it." We see rose use the same power on them that she did on Pearl. Garnet realises it and worries her relationship is fake because Pink Diamond forced her to never consider that they shouldn't be together. Though I feel like a flashback to that moment in the answer would have solidified that better.
When i was younger, Kid me thought ruby was a boy because I didnt even know what "being gay or lesbian" meant. I looked into it and I just wanna say. Thank you Rebecca Sugar. You have introduced to a new community that I can be apart of😌.
So I actually replied to another commenter, which I'll get to, but first I have to say this is the best and most in depth character look at Garnet ever (that I've seen) so double the kudos and thumbs up for that. As +Mike Paskell mentions below, the events of the last arc aren't out of left field as you think and actually make PERFECT sense as to why the two broke up. I talked mostly about Ruby in the reply comment, who BTW literally states her reasons for being apart and how she comes to the decision to marry Sapphire. That's all laid out in The Question. Sapphire is just as easily answered - she has precognition, which is the full term for future vision. That means, in any other event, Sapphire would've easily seen through Rose Quartz, could've prevented the war, could've saved countless thousands, if not millions of gem and human lives (remember Greg stated that the war cost lives on both sides). So why didn't she? Simple; as Sapphire, her visions take one path. The inclusion of Ruby when they're Garnet means she has multiple paths. Think of it like a map/Google maps. Sapphire's vision is like an old paper map, that you set up to go from one city to another, on this particular highway or interstate; Garnet's vision is like Google Maps, where they might be two, three, five, etc number of ways to get from your city to your destination. You have a little more freedom to stop at a Circle K or something. However, like Google Maps, if Garnet doesn't know about something - like construction going on - then she's not going to know what actions to take beforehand. So as Garnet, teh road that led to discovering Rose Quartz was actually Pink Diamond wasn't even on the map (much like discovering Pearl was lying about the communication hub in CFH). Again, the implications of this are many - if Rose had been honest up front, maybe there was a path to get HW to back off without a high loss of life; maybe there were decisions Garnet made as a newly baby fusion that were made based on something Rose said that could've been changed. It's basically the road less traveled and it wasn't traveled because Sapphire and thus Garnet didn't know the road existed. Again, as I pointed out in the latter comment, Rose gave them permission and acceptance in being Garnet. Yes, the two liked being Garnet and preferred to be her, they did kinda stay her because someone TOLD them to. Again, Ruby makes that quite clear and from Ruby's perspective, she's never BEEN an individual; I mean, they are known as 'Ruby and Sapphire'. Even Greg and Rose are known as individual people and not a couple, so why not our favorite space lesbian couple? And to be honest, as one of the most stable couples on TV, I don't think there's anything wrong for a couple who has been together for so long to take a step back to reassess their relationship. In this case, they split up to reevaluate their relationship and what it meant to THEM - not Rose, not Steven, not Pearl, etc - but to them and they made the choice to stay together in a permanent way that was THEIR choice. It's just as Ruby says - now they can be Garnet even when they're apart (of course, this statement will mean nothing if Ruby and Sapphire don't split for anything that isnt plot related)
I would really like to see you make in-depth analyses of each fusion we’ve seen in the show. But only those whose components we have met, which means Rhodonite and Fluorite, as there isn’t really anything about their components to be analyzed as individuals.
I think maybe sapphire was so distressed by Rose's lie because of her previous standing on homeworld. Her experiences working so closely with Blue Diamond. Perhaps she felt she was being used. Similar to how Ruby felt after the Sardonyx incident.
I'm currently pretty new to your channel, but really like your views and how you analyze LGBT+ representation in media. There's actually one game out there that I think you'd like for both its representation of women as well as LGBT+ characters. It's called Hollow Knight. It's basically Dark Souls, but done with more color and as a 2d platformer. The player themself is genderless and many of the better characters in the game are female, such as one named Hornet. It also has a LGBT+ relationship between two side characters. Now, I know only one LGBT+ relationship may not seem like much at all, but hear me out on this one, as the game knows better than to represent women and LGBT+ relationships just so they can show off their political views. Instead, the main concentration of the game is on the story, which, in my opinion, is a pretty damn good story Because the game, rather than focusing on a "look how progressive we are," mindset, instead focuses on the story, you end up with well developed characters who matter to the main storyline who only happen to be women. And although the only LGBT+ relationship isn't part of the main story, it still is extremely touching, and just plain made me happy. I recommend the game because, in my opinion, while it may not represent much, it represents right. It goes by a mindset of "we represent these characters the right way, or we don't do it at all, because what matters is the story." Also it's a fucking good game and I have no idea why I am commenting this much shit after only watching one goddamn video. Have a nice day!
Ok majorly pissed at how you completely brushed off lapis's story arc. I get you may not be her fan but, my god, have some respect for the show and the writers. I don't particularly like jasper but I respect what she represents and am willing to think about her character like I do the others. First off it is implied that jasper wasn't going to give lapis a choice. She was grabbed out of the air by this intimidating gem that she had already fell captive to once. And jasper wants to use her to KILL the only person that's been nice to lapis for 5 thousand years. So she comes up with a plan, submits to jasper and then traps her at the bottom of the ocean because she wants to save Steven. Because that's all she's ever known. Because when people go through trauma they can sometimes pass that trauma on and use it on someone else because that is all they've ever known. This does not excuse lapis nor does it make her a bad person. It starts off with good intentions but quickly leads to lapis using jasper as a release for all of her pain. She has been controlled for so long that when she finally has some control she lashes onto it as she believes this is what will make the pain go away. But it doesn't. Jasper ultimately gains control (doesn't unfuse which shows she still intended to use lapis) and when they unfuse it's lapis that reflects and understands that that fusion was unhealthy. That letting out her control issues in that way isn't healthy. That ultimately a relationship based on a power imbalance is bad whether or not she is the one on top. So now she is terrified of all relationships. She is terrified of being controlled and doesn't want to become the person she was with jasper again. So she runs. She leaves her friends behind because in her experiences that would be best for both of them. But it doesn't work. She's still in pain and through the moon base she is able to not only see the damage she has done to peridot but also that peridot is finding solace and happiness in her friends. And here lapis is. Alone and still in pain. As an audience we can see the mistakes she is making because we know the crystal gems and Steven and how wonderful they are even if they face some bad shit. But we have not experienced the hell lapis lazuli has been through and a lot of this fandom is so quick to judge her. This is a problem I've seen in a lot of people's attitudes towards abusive relationships. There has to be a clear power imbalance or people are not convinced. When there is no clear victim people can feel confused and try to make one up. But the reality is that most abusive relationships are a two sided thing. I'm not talking about the ones that have one person beating the other one senseless. I'm talking about the kind of relationship that is represented by lapis and jasper. A relationship I've been in and one that a lot of people will go through. It's an amazing representation of that kind of relationship because lapis is not the victim and jasper isn't the perpetrator. They were both bad. The difference is that lapis managed to accept it and is slowly making progress. Yeah she slips and falls back but that's what everyone does. Progress is not a straight line. So can we dignify both jasper and lapis with at least some thought please?
its been years and still i come back to this video, i love the way you present every video, to they point ive watched all of them, even for the fandoms im not in.
Garnet is freaking amazing. Can’t believe I just found this channel, thank you for making this(also, don’t pick me for the prize thing please, I’m not good or comfortable with receiving stuff, thanks)

one thing I use to have a problem with is how much they seemed to depend on each other- how ruby and sapphire had to be together all the time you know? and one thing I really liked about Future was that they could be apart but still be okay. I thought that was really nice and a good way to show kids that you don’t need to be with your partner 24/7 and its okay to be your own person
This is beautiful. I will say that Fluorite is also an inspiration to me because I wouldn't mind an open relationship. She's so happy being her. It's incredible. Thanks for making a video on Garnet. Both Ruby and Sapphire have also been inspiring to me. As someone who's genderfluid, I believe it's only a matter of time before a gem in Steven Universe has some sort of gender realisation. That's just my thoughts, though. Thanks again!
What a great synopsis of Garnet! It’s so cool that you got to meet & speak with Rebecca Sugar!! You just made my favorite, Garnet, even more attractive to me. Attractive as a great character and being to aspire to be! Thanks for your opinion and work.💜
This is my first time on your channel and I’m glad I found it. I always refer to Garnet when it comes to my own relationship with my own boyfriend. We understand each other and help each other grow, I helped my boyfriend with his self-confidence and being outgoing, I don’t judge him and I let him be who he is and without judgment and I can be myself with him and he helped me with my anger issues because I love. My boyfriend and I just love each other and we let each other be who we are without judgement. He’s my anchor for when I go off the deep end with my anger and I let it take over me, he’s kind enough to understand that I’m still working on it and it now doesn’t happen often as it did. As I was saying, Garnet is a healthy relationship and I it’s awesome, also they don’t draw attention that it’s two lesbians who love each other but it’s just a normal and healthy relationship. 12:50

Lol.
Jasper and Lapis were a two-sided abuse though.

Jasper being the main abuser shown evidence:
The first time she was introduced she was *dragging* Lapis around
She hauled Lapis down while she was trying to escape
Her trying to convince they should fuse to fight the Crystal Gems after the ship explored, using Lazuli's past against herself,
Her trying to continue the horrible relationship between her and Lapis to get more power when she approached them on the boat
We don't even know the things she to Lapis did while they were on the ship.
Lapis being the victim evidence:
Lapis pulling up walls/defensive mechanism against Peridot even when Peridot was trying to be friendly (Lapis does have a right to be mad, she just wanted to go home and got imprisoned )
Lapis trying to *avoid* *water* because it brings up memories of her being in the ocean with Jasper
(The w a t e r, mind you. Her element. Her power.)
Her showing fear when Jasper appeared on the boat
Her resiting Blue's EONS of depression waves with Lapis saying she felt worse
Lapis being the sub abuser:
Her blaming everything on Jasper
Her admitting that she liked blaming things on Jasper
I wouldn't say her imprisoning Jasper is her being selfish, she was trying to protect Steven with her being a sacrifice
A link to an amazing video explaining their relationship in Lapis' POV
th-cam.com/video/peYHRRgb0EE/w-d-xo.html
Jasper and Lapis are two flawed characters (pretty much everyone n the show lmao), Jasper being an insecure, narcissistic bully and Lapis being a traumatized victim of abuse and imprisonment with rightful rage.

Just like steven, they both want to spread positivity.
Who's your favourite fusion?
*_There's no Sardonyx_*
Sinéad Ward tbh she’s such a underrated fusion, her and rainbow quartz 2.0 need more screen time.
SMOKEY QUARTZ!!!! jk its garnet
I like how Steven universe addresses society judgement on queer people it the most accurate I saw so far.
@@freefallcos801 they're just angry
And this is why Garnet is my favorite character
👏👏👏 it takes a lot to write that much
I would really like to see you make in-depth analyses of each fusion we’ve seen in the show. But only those whose components we have met, which means Rhodonite and Fluorite, as there isn’t really anything about their components to be analyzed as individuals.

“Garnet can snatch anyone’s wig, including her own” - pridebray

It goes by a mindset of "we represent these characters the right way, or we don't do it at all, because what matters is the story."
Also it's a fucking good game and I have no idea why I am commenting this much shit after only watching one goddamn video.
Have a nice day!
hollow knight is genderless really? looks very much like a guy
Finally someone mentioned this! All gems are genderless!!
Almost cried my eyes out i love this show so much like wtf!
_tossing roses_
Beautiful, just beautiful

My boyfriend and I just love each other and we let each other be who we are without judgement. He’s my anchor for when I go off the deep end with my anger and I let it take over me, he’s kind enough to understand that I’m still working on it and it now doesn’t happen often as it did. As I was saying, Garnet is a healthy relationship and I it’s awesome, also they don’t draw attention that it’s two lesbians who love each other but it’s just a normal and healthy relationship.
