A Bit of History. This year was the first time African American contestants won Preliminary awards (Miss Arkansas - Lencola Sullivan - Swimsuit) and (Miss Washington - Doris Hayes - Talent). ALSO the first time an African-American contestant placed as a runner up (Miss Arkansas - Lencola Sullivan).

Hearing Susan Powell sing The Telephone Aria reminded me of her voice teacher at Oklahoma City University. Florence Birdwell passed away in February 2021 and was probably one of the most renowned voice teachers in America. She taught for 67 years at OCU and her students not only included Susan Powell, but Kristin Chenoweth and Kelli O'Hara, both Tony award winners. Three Miss Americas attended Oklahoma City University (Jayne Jayroe MA 1967, Susan Powell MA 1981, and Shawntel Smith MA 1996) and it is known locally as Miss America University.

I was faculty at OCU while Susan was student there. She was a delight, mad as a March Hare! When I learned she was going for Miss America, I feared they would never survive her! As her costumer in many shows at OCU and Lyric Theatre, I can attest, she had the most perfect fanny EVER. During my tenure there, I met and/or costumed SEVEN Miss Oklahomas. It was indeed a proving ground for beautiful and talented girls!

Disagree. It was imporant for the long term success of the pageant to replace Bert Parks.

@@renegaderunner332 and that may be true, however their choice of replacement was poor, and the callous way they informed him, oh wait they didn’t he found out from a reporter I believe. Granted he was older but to be cast aside in such a debase manner did not do anything to help them in the long run. And look at where it is now, maybe think of the repercussions of your decision before making it.

Miss Texas Teri Eoff went on to star in daytime soaps most notably on Search for Tomorrow as Suzy Wyatt. And Miss Arizona Brenda Strong went on to star on among other things Desperate Housewives.

As I recall, Teri Eoff encountered an unexpected hurdle between state and nationals. In the TX pageant she performed a monologue from 'House of Blue Leaves' which was humorous and touching, but was not allowed to perform it at nationals. Can't remember but either the network censors found it inappropriate or the playwright objected. I always wondered if she might have finished higher with the 'Blue Leaves' monologue as the one she does here wasn't nearly as interesting.

@@danl4238 The House of Blue Leaves monologue contained dialogue about Jackie Kennedy. It's been speculated it might not have been appropriate for Miss Texas to do material referencing the Kennedy's because JFK was shot in Dallas.

Great pageant!! It’s so wonderful to go back and watch the pageants again. Thanks to my daughter and her husband who gifted me a laptop and internet for Mother’s Day 2022. I was a first year Highschool senior when this one was broadcast. Miss Arkansas was a beautiful 4th runner up and would have made a lovely first ever African American Miss America. But we know that was Vanessa Williams and Suzette Charles Miss New York & Miss New Jersey respectively. Susan Powell was a lovely winner. Ron Ely wasn’t so Bad as Host!! He was well spoken , handsome and he sang “There She is Miss America “ wonderfully. I Don't know why some people had a problem with him. Bert Parks was making errors with the girls names & the states they were from. Also getting a little to fresh and chummy touchy feeler with the ladies. The pageant was due for a new face(Host) after 25 years with Bert. These are wonderful pageants!!Thankyouto all the TH-cam channel creators who upload all the beautiful pageants!!😊👌💐🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

THE MAO actually used to see every televised finals nights (for a reason I have never found out, and I am basing this as fact by virtue of knowing that back in the late 90's to early 2000's when I found out on the MAO website that they were actively selling copies to purchase and they were offering both VHS and DVD at $50 each- based on the first person they show being announced as winner in the "crowning moments" tape is the year Marilyn Van Derbur won as MA 1958- why, despite there being video -rather than still footage, if you will of even Lee Meriweather walking having just moments before been told she'd won by Ms Slaughter- always confused me; I decided one day to try to try to get the reason for this, thinking they must surely have made a mistake; as far as not having the ability to digitally preserve and then sell anything televised/taped starting with Lee Meriweather.) Living only 2 hours from AC, I actually drove to pick up the 4 finals nights pageant tapes that I wanted from late 80's/early 90's, plus the 75th anniversary pageant in '95, as well as a specially made crowning moments video. My first impressions of the MAO staff, who at the time worked out of offices on the first floor of a hotel quite a distance from the Boardwalk area but still in AC, was of professionalism, very genuinely nice, organized, but most importantly- absolutely NO indication of lack of knowledge; NO indication of incompetence; it was clear they literally could have answered basic questions if I needed one answered. I actually had not even known OF the existence of that crowning moments tape, until when handing me the already paid for & neatly packaged tapes, I mentioned how neat it was to see in the hotel's lobby on a tv screen of the moments when previous winners had been announced. I recall saying, I don't think I make enough money to be able to buy all the previous pageant tapes you're selling. The woman then tells me its actually a newly created tape, but had not yet been added to the website; and "would I like to come in and take a few more minutes to look at it- if I liked it, knowing I took the time to drive 2 hrs to pick up the tapes, she said "I am sure we can offer you a discount on this new tape if you get it". Less than 60 seconds in, I said I only had $35 cash left, will you take that. And she said we'll make it $25!. I am saying this so far, because its potentially helpful to know before I give you what I regret having to inform you about in answering your question. Unfortunately, a VHS player given to me from parents that had "allegedly" been sitting mostly unused at the family beach house- literally "consumed" or ate, the very first VHS tape I put into this VHS player- and of course it was my very favorite tape- the 75th anniversary tape when Shawntel Smith won; I don't know WHY my father didn't first put one of his own VHS tapes at the beach before "claiming" it was a perfectly working player- after all, had a Phd in Engineering and for 39 yrs was a professor of engineering and associate dean in the engineering school at the Ivy league UPenn. Astounded at this happening, I immediately called the MAO offices upon not finding the pageant finals, crowning moments, as well as all the years they started selling every years' 3 prelim nights. The woman who answered the MAO office- asked me- no kidding- what I was talking about. "sir, we don't sell tapes of any of our pageant years." already a bit irritated at what had happened to my tape, I asked her then why would I have a paid receipt for 7 VHS tapes, and all of those tapes have the actual MAO corporate logo on the VHS sticker. No reply. I was almost out of my mind. I said ma'am, I am a 2 hour drive from ac. Now- do you want me to drive to you in person all 7 tapes, with my receipt- which includes the signature of the woman who signed my paid receipt,in my effort to replace on of those which is broken, or do you want my name and number and call me back post haste with an explanation of what you are talking about." Because I can promise you, that the MAO sold both VHS and then later offered DVD versions of these. And I am (I was @ 41 at the time) 41; trust me when I say to you that you don't want me in person at your office being told you've never sold copies of the pageants. I was born in 1969. So please carefully keep in mind before you return my call, how I am aware by virtue of my VHS tape called crowning moments, that in 1958, when Marilyn Van derbur, was crowned Miss America, it was not the previous years winner- Marian McKnight, but the then pageant director Ms Slaughter who placed over Marilyn the sash after being announced winner. I apologize for my massive missive, but from what I was told in a call of apology by someone supposedly acting as a legal representative, that the tapes could no longer be sold if at ANY point, even just one note of "There She Is" was included in the tape. I was told it was an ongoing legal battle between the estate of Bernie Wayne who wrote that song and the MAO. (However, perhaps they've since been given permission to sell them, albeit with at least some of the proceeds going to Bernie Waynes estate- so go to the website, get the national office phone number. Call them, and IMHO- I'd suggest you give this tactic a try: introduce yourself when calling as a former Miss Alaska, & you're inquiring about how you can obtain a copy of the MAO pageant of the year in which you participated and how much is the cost including shipping. Saying all of that in one sentence together may give you more leverage than you think. Also, if the MAO office happens to have an employee who specifically handles MAO contestant alumni, ask first if there is someone who takes questions from former Miss's- in the same way college's have an alumni office. If I were you, trying to find out FIRST if that position exists is potentially far better than first getting a receptionist or admin assistant who you are then forced to present your question. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out,

I think Ron Ely did a fine job. Bert nearly ruined the finale of the 80 pageant, making 3 noticeable mistakes in his announcements. Ely spoke well, was handsome, and charming. Plus, he didn't paw all over his female cohosts like Parks did.

Yes Steve someone above in comments stated Ron was a poor choice but I disagree. I have always liked Ron and felt he did a good job with this and even the singing which I didn't even realize he could sing. By the way I was from Alabama and in college at the time of this. I forgot Miss Alabama got 1st runner up in this but I did remember she did ventriloquism because she came and performed at my college that year and even better to see in person.

Ron Ely was in a very difficult position. He followed the great BP. Then was scrutinized on TV after the upoar of Bert's firing which also included Johnny Carson's effort to have him reinstated through public opinion.

Ron Ely didn't have the charisma of Bert Parks. Bert may have been old school and slightly corny, but he fit the pageant like a favorite, comfy easy chair. Getting rid of him was the first blunder in a long line of mistakes by the Miss America organization. Great top ten that year, though. Miss Arkansas should've won in my opinion.

MalcolmMarshall i totally agree with on this 100%, Ron Ely may have been cute and all, but he didn't have the strong charisma and repor of Bert Parks, because Bert Parks was the Miss America Pagaent, that is why he was called Mr. Miss America he had a strong connection with the contestant the audience at the pagaent and the entire Television audience as a whole, and he could sing the hell out of the Miss America Song: There She is Miss America, with a strong passion, nobody could do it like Bert Parks, that is why today their is a Miss America scholarship that bares his name and there will never be another Bert Parks, Note: at the 1990 Miss America Telecast when Majorie Judith Vincent Miss America 1991 was crown, Bert Parks was seranaded her as she took her walk down the runway, she was the last Miss America that he sang the Miss America song too when she walked the runway.
Before he died the next year on February.2,1992, Rest in Peace Bert Parks you will Forever be Mr. Miss America and a Staple in the Miss America Pagaent.

No, it's a ridiculous event now because it always was. I'm watching out of childhood nostalgia, but it's all cringeworthy. That you focus on "PC" and "virtue signaling" makes me think you miss when it was an all-white pageant that somehow focused on women being asexual virgins yet pieces of meat at the same time.
