    We meet Josh Tulberg, an industrial designer who fabricated a mini boat of his own design, using his workshop laser cutter and 3D printer. Josh shows us how his boat kit is put together using zip ties and epoxy, and we take his boat on the water to test its seaworthiness. And it surpassed all of our expectations!

      Can't one day build this. The types of epoxy and the fiber glass and varnish finishes require long dry and cure times.

    • @user-neo71665
      @user-neo71665 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      His one day builds have turned into multiple day builds because of drying times. Personally I don't have a problem with it as long as he aint doing something like restoring a car and editing it down to pass it off as one day

      Garret Hynes that would be easy to do man, and he sells the boat without a motor so it would be simple to put a steam engine in.. I would have an issue with having a hot boiler that close to my proximity though, I would rather have a Stirling engine or something pushing it using the heat difference between the water and the air

    $1.5k - $2k ($1k for his kit + $500/$1000 for extras) for a complete boat sounds good but on eBay you can buy a 2nd hand actual boat for the same and even less. Its a great piece of kit but a tad pricey for a gimmick. They look super fun though.

      Yeah exactly. I don't think anyone commenting here has ever owned a real boat that is much bigger/faster and costs far less than this toy boat. on even a small to medium sized lake you'll learn real quick why most boats go faster than a crawling pace.
      there's also no room for an oar , which every smart boater knows you need.

    The price doesn't detract from the creativeness and fun the thing could give though.

      You know you could make a traditional build plywood boat using 1/2" construction grade plywood, a gallon or so of fiberglass resin (water proofing and with a bit of glass mat tons of strength), a quart of wood glue (to help bond seams) 10 dollars worth of fastener hardware (screws and if you have a brad nailer some ultra fine brad nails) a few quarts of oil based enamel (for extra water proofing and great color schemez) and a minn kota trolling motor (the most common brand and reasonably priced and you would be out 500 bucks... Even less if you bought a used motor....
      I think I have an idea, I need to figure out how to film descent TH-cam videos...

      actually you could build this from cheap luan paneling and polyester resign and only fiberglass on the outside and strips in the seams to save on glass.. actually you could get away with strips at seams and joints only as the luan is very porous and acts like fiberglass. Polyester resign is a lot cheaper (but be sure to run tests as to the amount of "hardener" to use in the mix depending upon the heat, sun, moisture etc. (do test is best as it takes only a few minutes to cure... I use the cool to slow it down till everything is covered and then heat it up to cure it completely.) The double hull and curves is more than enough strength for the water whcihinherantly distributes pressure to all surfaces.
      So now the price is around $50 for wood (you could laminate two pieces together too which would hold the shape very well) and $75 for resign $25-75 for cloth then the batteries $200, motor $75 ebay.. I'd get something with some power or just go with some small gas motor to get on a plane.. it is a flat bottom so no problem and it can hold a lot more weight (use double triple layers for strength spots) .. so yea for about $500 can do... or salvage as much as possible except the resign and cloth Which one could use standard corner wood (more detailed work) for all corners and seams... for about $100..
      Of course what is a boat without a sail??????? for when your motor or battery runs out??
      ha ha great build!!

    The adhesive used on marine ply is water resistant- and more expensive as well. The wood used is also an exotic wood used to being wet and won’t rot as readily as regular ply.

      Barely. A backhanded snide mention doesn't count in my book. It has the exact look and design as the PAUL ELKINS boat. This "designer" stole Paul Elkins intellectual property as far as I'm concerned.

    • @TomHolub
      @TomHolub 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well you'll have to take it up with Paul Elkins, who is now featuring this project on www.elkinsdiy.com/

    You can buy a real boat with a real engine for less than that. I own several boats that were a few hundred bucks that came with motors and trailers. They only need 25$ registration stickers. that's it.
    get a little aluminum row boat/fishing boat with a few hp outboard and it'll be 10 times better than this thing.

    • @__aceofspades
      @__aceofspades 6 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I get your point but its a bit off. This is aimed at the maker/hobbyist community, a lot of fun is making the project and having something unique. You could put this in pretty much any car too, while a fishing boat would need a trailer. Obviously a real boat or even kayak would be superior in terms of durability and usability, but thats not really the point here.
