    I had the life-changing experience of arriving at the Long Beach Grand Prix on raceday morning in 1980 (I think), walking past one of the 2 hairpins just as the morning warmup rolled out. At that time both Ferrari and Alfa were campaigning V12s in a sea of Cosworth DFVs and the early Renaut turbo V6. The noise as the cars accelerated off the hairpin was truly glorious, but the V12s really stood out. I later became a big Indy Car fan, and attended the Indy 500 in the glory days of the late 1980s and early '90s. The sound of an IndyCar turbo 2.65L V8 at well over 200 MPH would make your hair stand on end. The sound of 33 of them? Music to my ears.

    Imagine Schumacher would have come to Ferrari one year earlier. It was him who said, he would have won the title in the Ferrari 412T2 more easily than in the Benetton B195, so let's assume he would have won it. Glad you enjoyed, i have bias towards the turbo cars. I love the sound of the Turbo 6s from the 80s haha

    F12 T2 - absolutely my favorite also! F1 lost me as a fan when they ushered in the low revving POS as they have today and I've been to Abu Dhabi four times...

    Silverstone 90 British GP. I was at Abbey Corner. I did not need to look at the circuit to find out which car was coming as I could hear every different car.
    Best: Ferrari V12 with semi automatic gear box.
    2nd best: Lotus / Larrouse Lamborghini V12.
    3rd best: McLaren Honda and Williams Honda V10.
    Plumbing noise: All other Ford & Cosworth V8s.

      And how did the Judd V8's sound? Like the Cosworth engines? Or was there a distinction?

    That engine was NEVER designed for fire pumps!

    • @cartillect
      @cartillect  ปีที่แล้ว

      the FWMV is of course not for fire pumps but it is definitely an evolution on Coventry Climax's FWM which was originally designed as a water pump for the British.

    I love the Mercedes V10s from 2000 and 2001, so unique and epic. What I don't get the big deal about though are the blown diffusers, that era of V8s overall sounded very bland imo and the blown diffuser didn't add a lot to that for me.

      It was an Ilmor engine but I agree it’s my favourite V10, such an aggressive howl.
      My favourite however are the 3.5L V12’s from the late 80’s early 90’s.

      Agreed. The v8s were actually painful. They sounded gutless and the bouncing off the rev limiter was annoying.

  • @fastcougar3200

    The V12 Ferrari engine did not reach 18K rpm, in 1995 they were at about 15.000-16000 rpm and 6 speed gears. 18.000rpm were reached a few years later in 1998-1999. And V12 was not reliable at all because, well..In an F1 engine, the more moving parts. the more to break. Plus the V12 consumed more gas, Alesi was notorious for his out of gas abandonments. however, Alesi managed to win the Canadian GP in 1995, his only victory with the Ferrari V12. And Ferrari ditched V12 in 1996 when M Schumahcer came in.

    I'd wonder, if there would be a quiz with 20 motorsounds, if the petrolheads here on TH-cam could guess them all 20 right ? Just like those folks that taste wines, and seem to reckognize not just region but specific years of production. My senses are all very middle of the road, plus I'm neither a winelover nor a petrolhead.... :)
