  • Controversial opinions ahead! Formula 1 is a sport full of incredible machines and dedicated drivers. Some of those machines though, were a lot more effective at what they were designed to do than others. We've pulled together a list of the best F1 cars of all time, measured by win percentages and the records that they had as racing machines.
    We won't put them in any kind of order, these are just the nine that stand out to use the most from the history books:
    McLaren MP4/4
    Alfa Romeo Alfetta
    Ferrari 500
    Ferrari F2002
    Mercedes-AMG W07
    Red Bull RB9
    Lotus 72
    Williams FW14/B
    McLaren MP4/2

      Where's the Lotus 49? With the introduction (and slim design around) the innovative Cosworth DFV V-8, the winningest and longest winningest F1 race engine (1967 - 1982). Lotus 49: One of or the best looking F1 car ever. The DFV also birthed a super successful dominant turbo Indy version. Where are the Auto Union & Mercedes Benz mid-1930's monsters? 200 mph. 640 hp. lots of 'air'. Wildly more power than controllability. Auto-Union: 1st mid-engined Grand Prix racer. How abut an Honorable Mention for Colin Chapman's 1978 ground effects cars? Lotus 79.

    What about the Ferrari F2004? That car easily dominated the whole season and was far ahead of its rivals.
    What about the Mercedes W196 (Fangio & Moss) and W05? Arguably, the W05 from 2014 was far more dominant in performance than the W07. The W05 could have won all races in 2014 while the W07 was clearly slower than Ricciardo's Red Bull in Monaco that year. If you look at pure performance you could even include the W11 which has been the fastest car in F1 history in terms of lap times.
    If you leave these cars out, then there is no reason to include the Red Bull RB9 in this video. Sure, it was great in Vettel's hands but if you include the results of Mark Webber, then the car doesn't look that great to me. In comparison, Schumacher/Barrichello and Hamilton/Rosberg usually finished the races with a 1-2 on normal race weekends.
    Ps. I just checked which car holds the record for most 1-2s in a season. It's none of the cars above. It's actually the lesser known Mercedes W06 from 2015 which had an astonishing 12 1-2 finishes in 19 races. Even in terms of percentage, that's more succesful than the MP4-4. That's 63.16% of all races for the W06 (12/19) vs. 62.50% of all races for the MP4-4 (10/16)).

    McLaren MP4/2: five world championships and 25 GP victories! Finally someone appreciates what a stellar F1 car it was.
    It's competitors are the Lotus 72 (five world championships and 22 victories) and Ferrari 312T (five world championships and 17 victories*).
    *if one was to count the 312T - 312T5 as one car, it is the most successful at seven world championships and 27 victories. However, the 312T3 and the ground effect 312T4 / 312T5 were radically different chassis, and should therefore, in my opinion, be regarded as a different car.

      YES!!!! The MP4/2 is an amazing car, it raced for 3 years and won 3 driver's titles. While everybody was trying to make the most epic qualifying engine in the mid 80's, and while everybody still talks about those one lap wonders, McLaren quietly said "No" to that and won the titles anyway.

    I feel like Sebastian Vettel didn't get the respect he deserved for what he achieved in the Red Bull RB9. When he secured his 4th consecutive title at the Indian Grand Prix that year, Martin Brundle delivered a thinly veiled discrediting of Vettel while he was celebrating with Adrian Newey:
    "They have an amazing talent, and he doesn't have blonde hair,"
    Much like Lewis Hamilton in more recent times, it doesn't matter that he had access to the best car on the grid, the driver still has to make the best use of it. Mark Webber also had use of that car in 2013 and he went winless in his final season yet Vettel won 13 times in it (yes Malaysia 2013 was and still is controversial, but officially it still counted).
    Yes, nobody likes to see the same driver winning week in week out (neutrals anyway), but to outright dismiss the inputs of the driver and shift the credit to the designer is unfair

    @cladecq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Rindt died at Monza, not Monaco.
    The best F1 is the one who won the most championship, so the Lotus 72 (3 constructors and 2 pilots).
    No only she did that, but it was a major evolution of the F1 architecture.
    The last major evolution before hybrids.
    For these reasons, the lotus 72 is really the most iconic F1 of all time.

    • @crusherbmx
      @crusherbmx ปีที่แล้ว

      McLaren M23, McLaren Mp4/2 and Lotus 72, all successful over multiple seasons. Although it's mot my favourite of those 3, the MP4/2 did win the driver's title in every season it was entered, so there's that.

    • @cladecq
      @cladecq ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crusherbmx We can actually debate on the subject, as always in cars, like about the best driver in history.
      The MP4/2 actually has the same number of titles as the Lotus 72 in total (3 drivers and 2 manufacturers, vs 2 drivers and 3 manufacturers), but the little extra that makes me designate the 72 as the most "iconic car " of the history is that it introduces a major overhaul of the architecture (thin nose, and aerodynamic optimization with redistribution of the location of the mechanical parts) whose model will continue for the next 20 years, with only minor changes (except for the introduction of carbon hulls, which is a major improvement). Until the advent of electronics (active suspension, engine management etc.). With a small parenthesis concerning the ground effect which did not last.
      This car has truly modeled the structure of the F1s that we will see later, up to the hybrids.
      It was a fantastic aid to the development of all the teams of the time, which moreover gradually optimized the concept while Lotus relied a little too much on this car for a long time.
      But it put a big boost in Formula 1 technology, arriving shortly after the first fins and the first thoughts around aerodynamics.
      It is for these reasons that I reserve a special place for it.

    While it's legitimately one of the greatest F1s ever, it feels a bit unfair that the lotus 72 can claim 3 titles while it has had evolutions. If you go that way, there are F1 car "dynasties", in a sense. The FW14 is the point of origin of a line of cars which you may easily extend all the way up to the FW19, if not the FW20. The F2002 itself is the 2nd from a line that goes from 2001 to 2007, preceded by another which went from 1997 to 2000. The same point could be made for a slew of championship-winning Mercedes cars ending in 2021.

    The Lotus 72 should have won in 1973 (it won the most races, 7). Lotus switched to Goodyear tyres, which favoured Peterson. Although Fittipaldi won 3 of the first 4 races, that was it, and Peterson did not start winning until the French GP, which was too late to stop J Stewart.

    McLaren MP4/2
    In 1984 the FIA banned refuelling turning F1 into a fuel economy formula. This meant that many of the races saw competitors running slow in order to save fuel and finish the race. When you read race reports of the period, the Renault powered cars would begin fuel saving almost as soon as the lights went out. The McLarens had an advantage. With their sportscar experience, Porsche were able to design a fuel efficient engine. The McLarens could just run at such a faster pace than their competitors and still finish the race.

    the FW11, If it wasn't for Goodyear tyres not being safe then that car would have been first and second in the championship. and Lotus 79 should be here.
    But more importantly, Rindt died at Monza not Monaco, and Lotus was the first to build a carbon fibre chassis. and unlike McLaren, Lotus built it themselves whereas McLaren had theirs made by a contractor in the USA because they couldn't make it themselves.

      He's getting pretty close to the correct pronunciation. Ayrton's name was always butchered by English speakers. Just look up some Brazilian commentary F1 footage from Senna and you'll hear he's not far off.

    MP4/4 has an unfair advantage. No other car here has the best TWO drivers in the world at the time driving them alongside each other. Imagine the F2002 or F2004 with Michael and Mikka piloting.

    For me, the McLaren MP4-4 and Ferrari 641 are THE prototypical Formula One cars.
    When I think of what an F1 car looks like, I think of those two cars. Legends.
    However, the most beautiful-looking Formula One car of all time is the Brabham BT52....just sayin.
