Here’s a small piece of the puzzle. Ruby donated a large amount of money to the private school her kids went to . This provided cover to her. American Heritage is Mormon church affiliated. My daughter went there. At the 2018 charity auction, they were in the top tier of donations, had a special table reserved for them, and were praised several times by the principal and we were encouraged to watch their channel. There is a lot of power at the school. CEO’s were there, usually an apostle or two, community leaders, etc. It would take a significant amount of money to get this praise, as auction items that night went for close to $80,000, well over their value. When I saw the report that many times the police were called to the home, and then child services could not get a search warrant, I thought of the power she gained that night.

JH was never a good therapist or a good person and she uses her position for power. I'm a licensed clinical social worker and all this makes me sick. RF and JH are narcissistic and evil. And that's not a diagnosis in my opinion. My father definitely is narcissist. I was emotionally abused by him from my teens to 20s. I'm glad the children were not harmed any more than they were but effects of emotional abuse can be as hard or harder to "resolve" if one survives the physical abuse. When Ruby said her child committed SA for years during the custody hearing, it became apparent that she was so under Jodi’s spell and spouting her “therapeutic” ideas; however she epically failed her children way before Jodi. These women are sick in the head and hurting children and families and they MUST be taken off the streets. It is so apparent that Lauren and Dr. John are here to help all of us. But on the other hand this boy has been twisted by his parents for years. Is there a possibility that he did act out in a bad way? Maybe.
One thing I do know…we don’t tie up even predators and starve them.

Ruby was the perfect subject for Jodi to get her grips into. A narcissistic, yet insecure person, terrified of being judged for her children's bad behavior. A BYU professor for a husband, temple recommend holding adults, she had to have perfect kids. I started watching Ellie and Jared when they began posting for infertility. I was going thru infertility treatment at the same time they were going thru it. They ended up getting pregnant with their oldest via IVF. From Ellie and Jared each of the sisters began family vlogging too. All their channels grew from the viewership of E&J. 8 Passengers grew so fast. Of all the other family vloggers I'd seen, this woman showed everything. She seemed to need validation. Another sister Bonnie also had a few questionable punishments she showed on their vlog. The response to Bonnie from so many of us caused Bonnie to stop sharing punishment. Ruby didn't stop. She just tried to validate it. When Ruby first began vlogging, E&R did not get punished, they were preschoolers and ran the house. Ruby's sisters and her parents didn't approve, you could see their faces, tongue in cheek, when Ruby had her wild children running around. I'm certain Ruby was humiliated by what seemed to her family to be lax parenting the the outcome it was having. Ruby and Kevin began hanging out with April and Davey Orgill. April and Davey have used Jodi speak on their vlogs before, they definitely got more strict from when they first began vlogging. Chad and their oldest son Zade were good friends. After the group trip they all took to Disney World, Ruby made a vlog talking about a therapy program she was mentoring with. Then things went from more lax, to super strict. As time went on things changed from normal parenting to extreme parenting. Food being held, rooms being taken away, losing phones, for good, being sent to wilderness camp....then Ruby only posted "therapy" advice. Jodi got her grips on this woman and I'm 100% convinced that Ruby is so deeply brainwashed, she herself is going to need therapy before she understands exactly what she has done. It's no excuse, but I truly believe that Ruby is a danger to her own children, however Jodi is a danger to society, extremely, willfully and knowingly choosing to destroy people. Neither is good, however Jodi is so much more culpable and I hope her punishment and sentence shows this.

I just want to say, you’re the only person I’ve seen saying the same things I’ve been thinking. I’ve seen so many people saying she was, “bad from day one, shouldn’t have ever had kids.” I just never saw that version of her. Granted, I stopped watching her the year before Chad went to desert survival camp because consequences were starting to outweigh the behavior. But… never did I think she’d starve her kids or lock them in a basement.
I started watching in 2015, when the channel was under 100,000 subs. She wouldn’t put up with “back talk” from the older kids and music lessons were a requirement… but it wasn’t downright abusive. Regardless of how many 14 year olds online thinking harp lessons are “literally traumatic.” They were a functional family at one point.
I remember the funny looks from family when Ruby would let the younger two act like kids. Funny how Bonnie is now praised as the only member of the family that let’s “kids be kids” when she was the strictest of the siblings when they were all broke and trying to make money from TH-cam. I also remember when Ruby was so scared to up the grocery budget. She was having flashbacks of when Kevin was in grad school and they struggled to pay bills. She was crying because she hadn’t eaten dinner in a week. The kids were growing up, they ate more. And Ruby gave her portion to the children. She said, “I have to allocate more money on groceries. I’m tired of going hungry, it I would do anything for my children.” It still makes me tear up. Again, this was the very early days when money was still tight and she was nervous to waste a dime.
… that’s not the same mom that would donate $80,000 to a private school to ensure no one rats her out because she’s starving her own children. At some point, Ruby changed.
What disturbs me after learning Jodi’s brainwashing techniques is how the majority of the internet does the exact same thing. Jodi equates everything to sex addiction. From occasional porn use to sneaking a peak of someone’s rear end to actual repeat registered offenders. Being equated to a rapist because you choked your chicken makes you snap.
Just like how being called a bad mom that should have her kids taken away over posting a video of bra shopping breaks your reality. Should she have posted that? No… I remember my first time bra shopping it was so confusing and embarrassing. I cried in the fitting room.
But, there was a time when the videos felt like a family reunion. “Oh, they’re getting so big!” “I know! We had to go BRA SHOPPING.” (Or was that just my mom that said stuff like that?) Mormons have huge families. So the idea of 100 strangers watching your personal life probably didn’t phase them. They’re practically strangers with their own first cousins.
So after years of hearing, “you’re a bad mom no matter what you do.” It definitely set the tone for Jodi to swoop in.
I do agree she had narcissistic tendencies that stemmed from insecurity. I think it was partly from her childhood. She had to raise her siblings at times. I’m sure that was a lot to process once she had her own family and all the other siblings were much closer to each other than her. I can only imagine how insecure that would make someone. “I did all this work, what else could I have done??”
After a while, you accept you’re the black sheep of the family. Again, making Ruby an easy target for Jodi to convince her to cut everyone off.
She was always scatter brained maybe that make her insecure, too. Especially compared to her oldest, who had to keep her mom in line. I don’t think it was bad in itself. Some people are better at making lists and sticking to schedules than others. But when your ego gets jealous of your daughter… that’s a problem.
This is a multi layered situation and I hate seeing it be over simplified as good vs bad people.
Is Ruby bad now? Yupp. She probably needs ten years of institutionalized therapy.
But to say the kids should have never been born, like some people say, is disgusting. So again, thanks for your take. I didn’t realize Jodi worked with April and Davey.

A common saying in NVIXM was that there were no ultimate victims, so if you felt like you were a victim of something you were meant to look and see how you were ‘at cause’.

I really struggled with this idea and couldn't make sense of it. I went into a pit of despair, but I came out the other side, realising the cult leader was completely wrong. A child is never responsible for the actions of an abusive adult. I decided that the "alternative therapy" world was full of mentally ill people, the misguided and those who take advantage of the vulnerable.

She also said that her family tree from roots to leaves is BLIGHTED. I think what happened between Hildebrandt and Franke was a meeting of like minds. Hildebrandt differs from Franke in that she has a larger vocabulary but redefines words. What she means by 'responsibility' she really means submission. I believe Jodi might be a murderer. Why? Because of what she would do to her niece Jesse. Itbwas too calculating when she took her to a remote mountain and forced her to exercise in the snow and she was already looking a hair's breadth away from dying from hunger. I wonder how many runaways she would have had access to. She had inappropriate relationships with her patients which is why she changed her profession to coach.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for covering this case. I've been obsessed, because I am deeply worried about these children and I fear they are still in peril. There may be no healthy placement available to them. The father was complicit. The entire extended family vlogs in an egregious abuse of the children's privacy. I imagine the sisters and grandparents lining up to broadcast the children's 'healing journey.' And if they don't go to family we've heard of the continued abuse visited on the Turpins in foster care.
But I totally agree with Dr. John. With all the abuses and cruelty we can witness on Franke's channel, you can observe that Ruby Franke is vulnerable and extremely in need of real mental health care. Instead, she was preyed upon by Hildebrandt for her 2.3 million subscribers.
Having just started some long overdue therapy myself, this story has given me pause. I was steered away from getting help by religious family members who thought it would be a stigma, but I imagine it could have been so much worse if I had entered faith-based therapy, even as a person of faith. As with any Church that would promote this kind of quackery, rather than dealing with scrutiny required for true healing, I hope they are held to account to every one of her victims.

In looking at the similarities between the Lori and Chad Daybell’s cases -being in Distortion/being Zombies, it is true that Rudy & Jodi’s torture and abuse did not result in fatalities but I can’t help but wonder about the myriad of disorders like food addiction, PTSD, depression, anxiety and more that undoubtedly will afflict some of the kids.

    • @janshe3597
      @janshe3597 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, their abuse didn’t result in any fatalities, however, I don’t think that child would have lived much longer. With the type of wounds he had, it was just a matter of time before severe infection set in and took his life. They would not have been able to take him to get treated by any medical professionals. His lacerations were so deep, they were to his bones, nobody knows what implements were used on him yet, the Police did say that they found implements that matched some of his injuries, we haven’t heard about those yet either. I have no doubt in my mind that he would have been taken out of there in a body bag.
I don’t know if we will ever hear the whole story, I just pray that neither of those women sees the outside of a prison cell, at least until after those children are adults…I also pray for those children to heal from all of this, they have been treated horribly all of their lives…🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

For Dr. John: The aspect of LDS that may feed into the pathologies of personalities like Daybell and Hildebrandt is simply its keen emphasis on hierarchy and the strata of sin verses social power/perfection. I don’t believe Chad or Jodi genuinely cared about saving souls; they craved power and prestige. Ultimately, both even appeared to gain something from the torture of innocent children. And that is how we know the belief system was tertiary to the core pathology. The fact that they were Mormon isn’t incidental, but it also isn’t the *reason* for who they are and what they did.
