Well done and congratulations. BTW when Obi Wan tells you to "Use the Force" during the trench run, he means for you to try to make it without firing until the exhaust port comes into view. Do so and you will earn bonus points.
Well this has just become the greatest thing EVER! Seriously, I love seeing the process of what your original idea was and how the design evolved as you considered all the different issues. Every design decision was a good one. This video is inspirational on a number of levels because it REALLY makes me want to build the cockpit style MAME cabinet that I've dreamed about for years. It also makes me want to finish editing all the footage from re-building my upright Pacman style MAME cabinet. Thanks so much. I really enjoy this channel. Have a great day.
I had a permanent smile stuck on my face through this whole video. I'd never have the space to do it myself, but spent way too much time in one in the 80s :-)
Dude! That is freaking cool! Yeah I am 6' 5" and at my local arcade here, I am scrunched in the original Star Wars cockpit arcade machine. My knees are practically touching the dashboard. lol Still was a blast to play and I enjoy the Arcade1up stand up version here at home!
That arcade machine brings back good memories. There used to be a large amusement park/arcade in Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, Kent which had one of the sit down versions of the game. Every year when us kids visited father during one of the school holidays, he would take us to the arcades, give us a pound note which I would change for 10p's and then queue at the machine waiting my turn. Must admit I was not very good at the game but oh boy it was fun to play :)
In my best James Earl Jones impression, *impressive: most impressive*. That was truly a wonder to behold seeing it all come together in a video with humour, passion and warmth. Thatcher didn't become PM in 1983 though - she was re-elected that year. She became PM in 1979. ;)
I just watched this with the wateriest eyes of nostalgia. Going to the arcade at the flea market as a kid and spending all my coins trying to blow up the Death After after a corndog and a Pepsi, on my way to check out the farmers market with my mom. Amazing build, great job fellas, and wonderful production.
Well, that was unexpected. Thanks to this video I can almost feel your happines from building this arcade and it looks like it brings you back in time to the childhood. Honestly, your youtube chanel bring me not only the fun, but you are giving me part of your childhood to share. Thank you Chris. This means a lot to me, because I know how much those memories mean to you.
Excellent work. Play tip: in the trench section, you should "use the force" (like Obi wan says!) which means do not fire *any* shots until you get to the access port at the end, and you will get a bonus
Excellent!!! I loved this version and the Star Trek version, loved it when you put in your quarter and it said, "Welcome aboard Captian" Ohhhhh the 80's!!!! Thank you
I love how you went the extra mile with this as most would have been happen with the 1up machine as is. I really enjoyed the video, enjoy the arcade machine!
Wow.. I have been checking ebay forever to try and find an original too. My dad used to play indoor football in the early 80's and left me pitch side with a handful of 10p coins to play one of these. Top childhood memory. This video took me right back to that moment, incredible work, well done
I spent a lot of my gametime in this cabinet back in the days. Getting your childhood memories back in real life is so amazing. What a great conversion this is yesssss! Enjoyed this from the first second. You should recreate a whole arcade hall :)
A wonderful, highly enjoyable romp. As usual. VO's are harder than people think, you are still in character with a higher level of emotion conveyed in the timbre of the voice. One English actor to another, well done Christian......Yes.....
i remember there was an afterburner in an arcade where they cockpit moved while you played. it was awesome. kids now a days really missed out on some awesome fun in the old school arcades.
Star Wars is my all time favourite arcade game. Blew my mind when I found out that when you zoomed into the Death Star on each level, there was actual writing written on it, alternating between "May the force be with you" and the programmers names.
God I remember playing these in motorway services back in the day! For the full flavour I always used the triggers for the lasers and thumb buttons when firing the proton torpedoes!
Now that I've found this vid, the 1up machines don't seem to be available anymore! Doh! Loved this arcade machine as a student at Sheffield University where they had the cockpit version in the student union bar and a stand-up version at my hall of residence where I chalked up a sweet 30million score. Hopefully I can find one of the source machines soon and try the build. Thanks Christian.
How cool was that! When I think of all the hours my mates and I spent in one of those things... It also just goes to show that emulating on you modern Mac just don’t cut it for the full retro experience - you just got to go the whole hog and have the cockpit cabinet too - awesome build!
I remember seeing a gimbaled sit down Star Wars cockpit game at Circus Circus in Vegas back in the 80's. I'm like you whenever the game was in an arcade I put practically all my tokens/quarters into that game and play as much as I could.
@@tubeisace Yep, we used to take the caravan to Towyn during easter and summer breaks and walk around the arcades on the road to Rhyl and play all the favourites..Outrun stand up cabinet, Space Harrier etc...brilliant 😎
All I can say is WOW!!! I have several arcades in my home, and I want this one. I want that cockpit! You guys did such a great job, you made me feel like a teenager again going back to the arcades. The Star Wars arcade was one of my favorites. I don't have those cutting machinery to make the cockpit but if you ever decide to make these cockpits and sell them for us to build let me know. I will purchase one from you!!
Takes me back to summer days at Margate's arcades where I would go round so many times. I am sure them ones had smoked glass panels. Now you need a Atari TX1 to sit next to it hehe, my late mum after her time as a fleet st journalist and writer, also was a film and tv script and screenwriter so can understand the coolness of being in a major film like you did, I only ever saw domestic TV one being a C4 documentary about being a naughty boy and a drama based on my antics as a naughty boy...
Today, being over exposed to huge flat screen TVs, Cellphones and digital advertising boards it is hard to comprehend the joy people got from seeing an arcade machine Donkey Kong, Scrambler, Defender, Decathlon or Galaga. Then seeing a sit down game with cockpit and 2 handed controls! The graphics may be sub par compared to todays games, however it is about the game play. Great stuff!
Absolutely fantastic! I used to think before the Internet that I was a HUGE Star Wars fan but I quickly realised I was just a part timer compared to so so many. One thing I will say about the arcade game as when its mentioned in the video that it was like being in the movie and then you see these barely legible ? ledgable? barely see 'em vector graphics it must seem like a funny joke today. But I would go every Saturday into this one arcade in my town and play this for as long as I had money to burn and I was in the movie. I quickly grew to hate all but the trench run as that's the real moment you feel like you're in the movie. I developed a love for vector graphics so strong that I rejected filled and textured 3D graphics for years. It just looked wrong to me haha the vectors were so pure. Anyway another arcade much further away from where I lived had the Empire game and I seem to remember really loving that one but I never got enough money or time to play it enough to get good and that was a standup version I played of that one. The sitdown cabinet is just the best. There were precious few arcade games that enveloped you completely like that but I loved all of them. Afterburner was one I remember with a moving cockpit and Hard Drivin' was another sit down cabinet you really got into. Good times! I'd love to play this again but without that yoke it just wouldn't be the same, so very jealous but also really happy the proejct turned out so well.
When I was just a llittle boy my mom would go to WalMart and give me a couple of quarters to play and I would stand on a little stool they had so small fries like me could play the games. That was my first experience with that game and it's amazing controller. Nothing quite like the sound of an 80s arcade. When all those games were all playing and turned up loud and the lighting was dimmed. It was just an amazing sound. I can still remember that ambience an it takes me back.
Best arcade game ever made! I spent soooo much time and money in these. I’ll be checking out your drawings and seeing what I can do to build it. Thanks so much as these are so rare now.
Great job on recreating the old Arcade experience. The one item I do remember in these old full size arcade machines is that they did use a CRT and then project it onto a mirror or glass to create more depth. The projection would need to be a mirror image when projected against a mirror would result into a normal projection. One of my favorites from that time was chop lifter from Sega.
This is truely awesome... I was just talking to my mate a few weeks back about the 1up star wars arcade but he wasn't interested because he wanted the full cabinet experience..I was also very surprised to find out about your involvement in the star wars prequels. You must do a video going into the history behind that... Thanks again for your awesomeness
I was like "Oh haha, yeah man, he really looks like that Star Wars character! And also like that one! And… also like the guy with George Lucas… and also…" until I checked IMDb and turns out that, for once, he wasn't joking.
This is brilliant. I was in elementary school in 83(ish) when the Star Wars arcade game came out. I dumped oh-so many quarters in it that I'm still in debt to my parents. As an aside, I had no idea micro cabinets like these even existed. Definitely interested in a Ms. Pac-Man when available. Cheers.
I had a similar experience playing the pod racer game as a kid in the early 2000's. I eventually got the game for N64 but the arcade version had these really awesome dual controls that were waaaaay more awesome than the console version. Sadly the arcade closed before I finished high school, end of an era really... smh
This brings back some memories..when I was a kid and the NES was the hot new thing, my mom and stepdad knew a guy and he built a custom full size arcade cabinet that would house a TV and under the joy stick and buttons, you could put an NES and plug the joystick and buttons into the control ports so you could have two player games, there was a hole at the front so you could put in new games..made for a lot of fun. Sadly I had to get rid of it as I got older cause it took up too much space..also..TVs of the 90's a little hard to find and keep maintained nowadays..
across the pond here, back in 1996 my school had grad night at disneyland (end of year party for graduating high school). There was a version of this game that you actually strapped in and could turn 360 barrel rolls. The attendant said for that night it was only $5/ ride... normally it was $10. Keep in mind games cost $0.25 to play and i made $4.25/hr at my job. It was awesome, it also had feedback seats that shook when you were hit.

Great work, The sit down version was hard to find in arcades in the 80's. I only had the pleasure of playing on one a few times, every other arcade was the stand up. Still one of the best arcade games of all time! I can only imagine the joy you must of had as a Star Wars Geek getting to work Directly with George Lucas. Brilliant stuff. I remember playing this in the arcades in either Blackpool or Southport back in the 80s. Never thought back then that someone could actually make one of those and have it in their house. Very cool :D
I worked in my late teens in a sea front arcade. We had an original Star Wars machine. It weighed an absolute TONNE. It needed to be hoisted by crane, with 4 men. It was a pain to maintain, and protect and get spare parts. But when it was working it looked and played epically😁
The cockpit looks great, the dog is cute and all that... but I`m here just to make my appreciation post on how well your wife`s haircut looks even during quarantine 👌
Really enjoyed this! Great idea and very well executed - I loved the dubbing over the movie with the arcade sound, that worked brilliantly! Will you be looking out for original innards in the future for the authentic vector experience? I'd love an original vector game, whether it's asteroids, battlezone, tempest or star wars - the raster versions are fun but don't do them justice. I do however have an old Vectrex in the shed that I've not powered-up for about 15 years, so maybe I should give it a go - it's in a box next to my Colecovision, half a ZX Spectrum and my original C64! Time for that retro shelf! I'm concentrating on my own arcade cabinet project right now though, nearing completion, s i hope to post a video about it soon. I also got my parts CNC'd and the price was quite reasonable - about 100 quid including the plywood. The single most expensive part for me so far has been the vinyl printing for the artwork, but it's pretty essential, right?
Thanks! I'm actually happy with the 1Up display, for now... It has some vector emulation modes. I have it set to "vector glow" since the video which adds a glow around all lines, like it used to be 😊
@@cameralabs Yup! I'm going to revisit for sure some day. BTW yes CNC is great value. Our 4 pieces cost only $130. @@RetroRecipes yeah I saw some of those comments! IT'S A LABOUR OF LOVE, YOU CAN'T CHARGE FOR YOUR TIME! But whenever I deviate from my core subject of camera reviews, the videos always do very badly, for example my recent Tidal and Aeropress reviews. I understand it, but it's still frustrating! I have been filming my arcade cabinet build though, so that one will definitely get published. i reckon it'll be complete in a week or two depending on vinyl and glass suppliers. I'm looking forward to the 167 views it'll get over its lifetime...

Dont forget that smell of 3 weeks old vomit from motion sickness.
Also spill coke/root beer all over the seat and controls to make it sticky for extra authenticity

For me it would have been pizza grease and soft drink syrup, but you know - tomato, tomaughto
And a jukebox in the back, blaring The Pointer Sisters.
@@Michael-Archonaeus Yes, if i were him, i would have taken out the board from the arcade 1 up, and set up a pc in it to play the Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. That would be amazing!
This might be the best Arcade1Up mod ever... Love it. So well done.
i'm not much of a star wars guy but that machine looks insane and makes me want to get one
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹️ Good luck with your project
I had a permanent smile stuck on my face through this whole video. I'd never have the space to do it myself, but spent way too much time in one in the 80s :-)
I do not know how you are going to top this video, my friend. Just brilliant!
Thank you sir! It's all downhill from here 😉

Dude! That is freaking cool! Yeah I am 6' 5" and at my local arcade here, I am scrunched in the original Star Wars cockpit arcade machine. My knees are practically touching the dashboard. lol Still was a blast to play and I enjoy the Arcade1up stand up version here at home!
Projects like these are why your channel is blowing up! Super epic, man! I wish I had carpentry skills! 👍🏻
So do I! ;-)
Thank you! Those were the days...
If Arcade1up came out with a sit down version of this just like how yours looks like. I'd totally buy it no questions asked!
Well, that was unexpected. Thanks to this video I can almost feel your happines from building this arcade and it looks like it brings you back in time to the childhood. Honestly, your youtube chanel bring me not only the fun, but you are giving me part of your childhood to share. Thank you Chris. This means a lot to me, because I know how much those memories mean to you.
the level of craftsmanship. my jaw was on the floor
Thank you
Rock on!
I love how you went the extra mile with this as most would have been happen with the 1up machine as is. I really enjoyed the video, enjoy the arcade machine!
If they were to add this as a side option down the future and did the work for me, I totally would do this.
Just thinking how fun this game would be in one of the moving cockpit style cabinets like Afterburner and Space Harrier had.
i remember there was an afterburner in an arcade where they cockpit moved while you played. it was awesome. kids now a days really missed out on some awesome fun in the old school arcades.
Man, loved those two moving cabs
Star Wars is my all time favourite arcade game. Blew my mind when I found out that when you zoomed into the Death Star on each level, there was actual writing written on it, alternating between "May the force be with you" and the programmers names.
Great!
Next Discs of Tron environmental Arcade from scratch
So cool! I'm totally geeking out. Not only did you recreate this machine so well, but you were a major part of the prequels.
And a bit on the sequels and Rogue One 😭😉
This just made me feel proper nostalgic, remembering jumping into the cockpit at the arcades in Blackpool! 👌
Same here! Just hearing the sample audio from the game gives nostalgia chills 👍
My first go was at Prestatyn near Rhyl.
@@tubeisace Yep, we used to take the caravan to Towyn during easter and summer breaks and walk around the arcades on the road to Rhyl and play all the favourites..Outrun stand up cabinet, Space Harrier etc...brilliant 😎
Coral Island!!!
@@MisterCreamyDude Probably was, we always went to arcades around Central Pier, they were cheaper the further away you were from Pleasure Beach 😄
Great work, Sean and Perifractic (and PuppyFractic for supervising)! My wife just sent a link to your video to the local Star Wars club.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!

I envy @Perifractic to have been sitting next to George Lucas!

Sadly the arcade closed before I finished high school, end of an era really... smh
If you want to play it again, the N64 version has a cheat that lets you play the game with arcade controls using 2 controllers.

"What did you buuuuuy?"
Story of my life.

This is where the fun begins!
I have it set to "vector glow" since the video which adds a glow around all lines, like it used to be 😊
@@RetroRecipes this is the way!
@@cameralabs Yup! I'm going to revisit for sure some day. BTW yes CNC is great value. Our 4 pieces cost only $130. We got a few comments saying this build isn't $455 it's $455 + $50,000 for that machine 🤦♂️ But then I probably don't have to tell you about certain types of commenters 😉 Will you be posting your Vetrex as a video?
@@RetroRecipes yeah I saw some of those comments! IT'S A LABOUR OF LOVE, YOU CAN'T CHARGE FOR YOUR TIME! I've always resisted unboxing videos BUT I have a giant box in my shed with all my old computers and consoles it it, including the Vectrex, so I would love to do a retro unboxing and tryout!
