I just want to tell you how thankful I am that you posted this video. I just bought a house that came with a stove and I dont know what the situation was with the people that previously lived there but the stove grates were absolutely caked with burnt on grease and (I think?) paint where rather than cleaning them they were trying to cover up the gunk. I had fought with the gunk for a week straight. I let them soak in cleaning vinegar for 2 full days and still couldn't get it all off. I had actually given up and thrown them out in the trash one night and sat down to look for replacements. It turned out they were older cast iron grates from frigidaire that aren't made anymore so finding replacements was going to be more expensive than a new stove top. I started searching more and came across your video and after watching it I decided to try the ammonia so at 2am I fished these things out of my trash haha. I let them soak in ammonia overnight and the result was AMAZING. I still had to use a steel brush and a utility scraper but the gunk finally started dislodged and coming off. After an hour of cleaning they were done. I still can't believe it after a full week of fighting with that stuff. Thank you so so much!!!!!
Hi Tiffany! I am so happy this worked for you! I don't remember how I discovered this but glad it worked for you. I think it is about time for me to clean mine again. Hope you enjoy some of my other videos 📹 ☺
This was a GRATE video! Thanks for sharing. I do it a little differently. I take my grates outside, spray them with heavy duty oven cleaner, let them dwell for 15 minutes, then hose them off. It works well too.
I got my first apartment in the 1980s. Back then in L.A., rarely if ever did new homes or apartments come with appliances. The manager showed me two empty units. One had a stove and refrigerator the previous tenant was selling at $150 for the pair. The stove was a white Sunray from the mid 1960s and the fridge was an early-1970s Frigidaire in harvest gold that didn’t defrost. Thankfully, the previous owner took excellent care of them and kept them immaculately clean. They both worked beautifully. There was no grime on the burner grates. 😊 I kept the fridge for ten years and just got rid of the stove in 2022. It still worked but was rusting in areas. For practical reasons I opted for a new stove that air fries and whatnot. Eventually, I want to get a restored stove from the 1950s.
So excited to find your methods. I have huge heavy duty grates and thought about a trash bag. I will go get these bags and finally get my grates clean. Awesome video, thank you for your time and God bless you.
I agree. The vacuum bag or storage bag is a great idea as my grates are made all together. All other chanels keep mentioning gallon bags but that woulnd't work for me. Thanks
I left mine sit with ammonia overnight. This morning they were ready to be cleaned out. I followed your instructions. It worked. Just make sure that you gear up with mask 😷 gloves 🧤 etc. Be extremely careful, the fumes can be dangerous. Also you can scrape through the bag. Use your fingers and in a rubbing motion the grease will come off. Then when it’s cleaned, then you can take out of the bag and rinse..
Great video and explanation of how to do it and where to get the bags! Be mindful that if like me you have 5 years of layer upon layer of burnt caked on grease that you might have to repeat the steps of ammonia and elbow grease to get the best results.
Great suggestions. My hubby has his power washer out to wash the wood fence before staining it so I’ll have him take the grates out to the driveway, power wash the cast iron grates and see how they turn out!! Ours are not as greasy as the video.
Thanks for a great video. I used your method, and for the really tough spots, I used a brass-bristle brush and the grills are really clean! Thanks again Cheryl - from the background in the video, you have a beautiful house.
WOW Cheryl, been struggling to clean my grates til my fingers hurt. I couldn't find new ones for my stove, gonna try your way next time. Thanks so much for the tip
It will be easy. The hardest part is letting the grates soak overnight. I have done this several times and I find that the longer you let them soak the easier it is to get the grease off. Let me know if you try🙂
Mine are big and heavy as well. I take them outside, spray them with oven cleaner, cover with plastic for a few minutes and use a steel brush to remove gunk. It does a decent job. I guess I could spray several times, but we cook a lot. I might try this ammonia method overnight and see if that works better.
i just spent 5 hours with a razor blade and pumice stone it came out fair at best, i was not content with the out come, i got my baking dish, poured in a one pint ammonia with a half cup of bleach wrapped in saran wrap sat in the garage for 2 days , took the pressure washer which i highly recommend, the p/w took all of 2 minutes and i was 100% satisfied i believe the pressure washer would have saved me the 5 hours.the grease just washed off , and the dish was as clean as it was at new
Hi Berry! I think the plastic bags I used helped alot for leaving them overnight. I didn't spend hours getting it off. Thanks for watching and you tips.
@@aroundthehousewithcheryl i agree with you , now i wish i just used the ammonia and wrap , it really did come off very very easy , thank you for the tip!
I think what you should consider is spraying them a few times first with the same solution in a spray bottle and then put them in the bags. It surprises me that they got that bad to begin with. I wipe mine down after I cook. Try spraying them with Greased Lightning
I think turning the bag with two cups of solution would coat better. Also I would do all that outside for your lungs sake. Thank you for the tip and where to get those bags!

Thank you for this quick fix. Is there a way to remove Burnt microfibre cloth stubbornly stuck to cast iron grates !! HELP PLEASE. ( High end product like Viking Wolf Thermador says no harsh chemicals ) they prefer we buy New Grates. Again HELP PLEASE.
I am not sure about Viking. If they are cast iron, I don't see why you can't use ammonia like I did. Try sprinking with baking soda and the pour vinegar. That may take off some of the burnt on grease. Let me know what happens 🙂
I was thinking of using an old storage bin and leave them soaking in it for a while (mine are super greasy and hard to clean )and also use a bbq steel brush

How long did you leave in the bags? I leave mind in the bags at least 10 hours or more. Pick a day when you are not going to use the stove and make sure you have enough ammonia in the bag. Thanks so much for watching 🙂
@@aroundthehousewithcheryl WOAH! They look so smooth! My stove is only a year old, but the grates are all bumpy still like when we 1st got it 😅 And parts of them are gray. I'm not sure how I managed that.
