Demola Adepoju ‘Hawaiian’ - How I played for Ebenezer Obey before joining King Sunny Ade

- This is an interview recorded off a live radio program, Agbaletu.
Ademola Adepoju has been recognized worldwide especially in America as the artist who introduced Hawaiian Pedal Steel Guitar to African music ultimately through the African Beats of King Sunny Ade.
He went on to play in Paul Simon's 1986 Graceland and the album won the Grammy award.
The video shared on the screen here and the photos were for illustration and they serve as instructional contents to reveal Ademola Adepoju's time at a few concerts with the African Beats and how he related with members off-stage especially at the Japan 84 concert.

Demola Adepoju has said it all. KSA is the nice guy surrounded by Judases! Mr. Dele Adeyanju will want you to do a thorough expose on the AFRICAN BEATS; one of the greatest Band from Africa to conquer Europe and America.

Uncle Demola is also an artist, he did my portrait in Washington DC, he was playing Hawaiian guitar for us in the choir, a perfect gentleman, humble to the core. He is well loved and respected. Compensati ke? Bukola in life you have to srike out by yourself as soon as you can. If KWAM1 hasnt he would just be a footnote but he struk out and look at him now. Omo peteru did, even though he body of work is there, at least he has a mega name for himself too. Imagine if they Kwam1 and Shina peters have stay loyal and never aspire to greatness.

I have always enjoyed many of your interviews especially the ones with KSA and Chief Commander but I have just one small observation/suggestion.
Please let your guests express themselves freely with less interruption. Sometimes, it seems like you're conducting an interrogation rather than an interview!

Publishers include nuances in books to sell their materials. The paragraph that riled up Mr Ademola “Hawaiian” Adepoju did not claim that KSA played steel guitar. It says KSA bought one from Bobby Benson and kept it away in his storage.
Later on KSA even admitted to wanting Mr “Hawaiian” to teach him how to play the steel guitar. There’s no controversy about it.
Altogether a very interesting and illuminating interview.

Exactly my brother. U made a good point. Agbaletu need to be cautious. To me, he's trying to infuse hatred in the mind of Pa Ademola. That's it! Earlier in the interview, he asked what year Pa Ademola was born, and the man responded. He then said that " That means KSA is older than u by a year" Agbaletu shouldn't have said that. That's unnecessary to me.
This man and Kola olootu are the same, allow the man to answer one question before you ask another one
In fairness to him, Dele was trying to keep the tempo of baba Demola Hawaiian up. I kuku noticed that too, this is Dele's first show like that.
U are right ! Another area he needed to take note. He already got the informations but what he should have done was, allow the man to finish talking then u can confirm his statement with what u had already know. Bi won se nse nkan niyen. I hope moving forward, u will be better because we all love how u bring back good memories.

Ademola Hawaiian you are a good man unlike other sunny Ade band boys if only for one thing sunny have taken you around the world I like sunny Ade too forget about the past God Almighty will give you long life and good health
Not strictly true. Do you think there would have been KSA, his world tours and his AB without the huge contributions of these men aka band boys? No! No!! No!!! Remember, NONE of them went to KSA to learn to perform music - NONE. They ALL took their skills and expertise to him to enhance his own talent and created the dynamic and hugely successful synergy known as African Beats. But rather than Sunny treat them as partners in the band, he treated them as disposable subordinates - no doubt, tantamount to the culture within the NGRN music scene and to what KSA learned from late Bolarinwa Abioro.

Fabulous interview and insight into the career of Mr Ademola Adepoju Hawaiian whose names are amazingly my 2nd and 3rd names at birth. It is wrong though for commentators to keep insinuating or suggesting that other former band members of KSA, hun ba je. No! These elderly people merely related their experiences with KSA and his band. You can't for example compare the 8 years of Mr Adepoju who joined the established band to the near 40 years of Apostle Matthew Olojede, the 35 years of my friend Pa Abiodun Fatoke or to the early years of Comrade Femi Owomoyela who coincidentally grew up as a kid with KSA at Osogbo; Pa Abiodun Oni, Haji Rasaq Aladokun and others. KSA himself evolved as a person over those years in character, exposure, leadership skills, maturity and conduct. The consistent theme across ALL of these men is that KSA is not the same person that fans perceive him to be. He clearly didn't treat ANY of them right, going by their individual accounts. He enjoyed an abusive relationship with ALL of them. Anyone who can't or wont see, or acknowledge this is deluded. They lack capacity to think deeply. It'll be nice if KSA can call a reunion meeting with ALL of them and make peace with them before it is too late. Even KSA's former contemporary, not his band member Apoola King, Reverend Idowu Animashaun in a fairly recent interview said "Sunny ko ni adehun. O ye ki o tun ibe yen se ti o ba hun gbo mi"!
Dele, walahi, I can't just remember this record again, keep right ni kelele, apa Otun la o ma gba... Keep right ni kelele, it's a small record, I do play it when I was in primary school by then, around 1974.

@@deleadeyanju I love the track so much that it was hedged in my brain for over 40 years since it was released. Funny enough, I used to think it was General Prince Adekunle that sang it and I searched for it for years under GPA until I recently realise it was Adeyemo that sang it.

With different interviews given by most of the African beats, King Sunny Ade must be interviewed and need to take us through, shed more light to all the stories

Producer from Sunny Ade,s book that you quoted he never claimed to know how to play hawaian guitar he merely said he bought one from Bobby Benson. He also admitted that he could not play it until Demola came to him to play it even though Demola had one which is locally made. KSA never discredit Demola but gave him credit.
