The weirdest thing about this game is how much work went into the engine and environments that you never got to see by just playing the missions. Part of the big selling point of the game was supposed to be that the virtually everything in the game was written in script files , which meant everything about a mission could be changed - enemies, timers, triggers, events, even what map and models loaded when you came in from orbit - by changing a maybe one or two lines in the script files using a text editor. If memory serves, the script files even controlled fundamental things like weapon and vehicle behavior, menus and loading screens, cutscenes, AI, etc. In theory - what Brat studios sort of advertised - you could have almost 100% rebuilt this game from the ground up as something totally different without ever needing a devkit or low-level modding tools. In retrospect, this game was probably intended as more of a tech demo than a standalone FPS. Giving yourself infinite time in certain missions allowed you to fully explore the environments - like the clone ship, which you never get to see much of, even in the final mission - and holy hell, did they put a ton of work into everything. the ship is downright huge, with every room you could imagine on an actual ship, but you see virtually none of it just playing the game as intended. If breed had managed to take off, the modding scene would have been insane. I actually came across this video searching for Breed after all these years in the hopes that one of those cult communities had formed around it and done some cool stuff with the engine.
people couldn't mod anything, especially for multiplayer because changing anything from the script files blocks your access to original games. your script files must match with server's script files in order to be able to join. also the mesh format used by the Mercury Engine isn't public, this prevents people from adding custom characters / vehicles / buildings / maps.
Oh, yes, you could change anything via the script files. Me trying to replicate the demo mission from scratch was a not-insignificant part of my childhood, lol. But not having an actual editor proved to be a dealbreaker, because I had to spend hours on positioning anything correctly. But I did have fun modifying the BREED grenade launcher to fire like a minigun and throw the "grenades" across the map xD
Lets quote some german gaming press from back then: "The Halo Killer" - Giga "Thanks to its great visuals, the many types of vehicles and weapons, and the rich selection of characters, Breed is considered by experts to be serious competition for the upcoming action blockbuster Halo 2." - ComputerBild Spiele. "A playful and visual fireworks display gives hope for an action-packed, visually impressive shooter that is probably the biggest competitor for Halo." Justgamers Did they played a diffret game?
My fucking god I thought I was the only one that actually played this. I still can't believe I actually finished this thing when I was 9-11 years old I think. Still, was fun to revisit this game. Thank you so very much for this video review!
The game is a buggy mess but oh man i played it a lot during 2008-9. I really love the game and i still do. I wonder how it would be if it was remastered today, it had a lot of potential
I remember playing this in 2000's with my buddies and doing clan wars and i was more of a driver who normally drove the APC while the map was scouted by Buggies and a Fighter protecting us Airborne. I wish it was possible to play the game again, i will never forget about the fun times.
It actually has the LAN mode inbuilt to the game, (last time i checked was a bit so most likely yes) but since our clan collapsed once BREED shut down, didn't have anyone i could play with
I think you put in more effort in making this video than Brat designs ever did when bugfixing BREED. Yeesh, what a game that was. I liked the music enough to upload it to TH-cam and I still think some of the flying missions were way better than the game ever deserved (it wasn't until Halo: Reach that I experienced a game with exciting transitions from atmosphere to space and back), but the crashes and script failures were indeed a pain. I even managed to completely forget the voice acting of everyone except for the scenery-chewing monologuer. Can't believe I didn't watch this video sooner!
Oh wow I still remember how fucking hyped I was for this game back then. Even was in a clan to play it competively when it came out and I wanted to be the pilot who brings the others down to the planet from the dropship. I think that all fizzled out even before release and I never played the game in the end. That was probably for the better...
This was my favorite game when I was 7 (well small note, I only had the DEMO , I turned that first mission upside down) was also playing Halo, God of War , Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter , etc a lot of known titles, would you believe I was surprised when, 7 years ago when I remembered the game , I learned that BREED was not some sort of successful game that had sequels and was just a one and done? broke my fucking heart, damn right it did. Everything about the game seemed PEAK to me at the time , ngl 2007-2010 was simply unmatched (I know the game was made in 2004, I was 2 years old when it released so I unfortunately couldn't play it due to my small child brain) , every game was a masterpiece to me.
This was a pretty great review. I appreciated the snappy jokes and your sympathetic attitude toward the game. A weaker man would just complain about everything in it, but you gave credit to the game's positive aspects along with it's mistakes, which I thought was cool. Still kind of a garbage game, but one made with love. That radio show at the end was ridiculous lmao
I bought this game a long time ago and got thinking I might play it again, so I went to install it on my new PC and it just gives me an infinite reboot PC message every time I go to start the game, even after I rebooted. I don't remember how I got it to work back in the ol windows XP days so now I'm here lol I miss how cheesy this game was!
I thought this game (DEMO) was incredible at the time, I couldn't believe how big the game world was as I was eagerly awaiting Halo on PC. The full game just got wildly worse.
Got it as a kid and the installer was broken, when I tried to launch the game it would just prompt me to restart PC, combined with that ugly ahh icon of brat designs it felt more like a malware.
man I remember when I played this in 2006 it was fun even tho it probably wasted too much of my time just restarting PS its kinda annoying that your voice is lower then the game at times but beside that good video
Started making a review for this game and wanted to check out what had allready been done after watching this now i have less enthusiasm as this video was so good, basically the name Steve Snake is a legend when it comes to sega emulation and at the time this was released he was well know by many gamers for the Kgen emulator and later Kega Fusion, had no idea 'Stephen snake Palmer' was invloved in BREED but when i first played it i did think the music sounded in parts Sega (Road Rash) , using Steve Snake as a side character name in 2004 at the time might have been been advantageous to the game, also lets not forget Duke Nukem is a main character. Very small part but did make me think i've heard that riff before th-cam.com/video/UAYRIYdh340/w-d-xo.htmlm9s road rash th-cam.com/video/TkCwY6C32VQ/w-d-xo.htmlm44s breed
Thanks, but you shouldn't stop yourself from reviewing already covered games. I know the feeling but if we all did this there'd be no content on youtube
How do you get past "application installed successfully. Reboot the computer to complete the installation. Continue?" After rebooting my pc it still gives me this confirmation.
I downloaded the game from myabandonware and I didn't get that problem. Sorry I can't be of help, Games this ancient and obscure don't have many troubleshooting guides. Maybe try reinstalling. Honestly you're not missing much either way.
@@GnorriTV , that is why the game crashes a lot. The Abandonware offers the bugged original CDV edition with the crashing Starforce protection. People shoud try the fixed Xplosiv edition instead, which was released a year after, and does not have the nasty Starforce protection on it, thus it is way more stable and fun.
After all i managed to mod the game, so i bringed back demo models (which i believe are better than retail), demo textures and mostly just demo content/texture replacing and meddling a bit with the script
This game is hilarious... Who the fuck would name a character Steve Snake? Why is that woman's armor open right in the middle of the chest? The audio in this game is such a mess... and the game itself is such a mess. I can't even imagine the patience you had to play through this game. This was a great review tho'. Good job!

Was meant to be the "halo killer" to bad it didn't live up to those lofty expectations.
Instead it was the Brat designs killer.
I saw a preview of this in a magazine before its release, with the author wondering if it was going to be a Halo killer. Oh fun times.

Brat Designs are a UK developer. The game was pubished by a German company though.
Funny review, man. Wish it had an extra year of development
yeah, it had potential
I get the error entitled as: "Scripting: out of vehicle def space" whenever I run the game. Has anyone managed to fix this?
I don't remember this game ever crashing on my shit-box PC back when I played it. It was a great game, tons of potential. Too bad they folded :(
I’m glad I got to watch this rather than having to actually play this game...
Still have this game with box. I had always a crash in the beginning of this game.

The demoversion was better in a lot of ways. Better voicelines for tye troopers, more serious tone. Loved it for the artdesign.
You're getting better all the time. I played this shit game when it was out, the hype was real back then. And the same shit, too :)
I somehow I finished this game. Funny how they tried to set up a sequel.
