I gotta admit, I have a holiday tradition that centers around this series. For the last 7 years I've gone down a nostalgia hole and booted up Army of Two, ordered or picked up slightly too much Taco Bell, and played the game 'till I fell asleep in the early hours of Christmas morning. It's kinda dumb, but it doesn't cease to entertain every year.
This is one of those games that got me to hang with my dad alot more. We played the 3 games just having a blast in Army of Two. I was the one who would rush alot while my dad was the patient one. Sometimes he would scold me for always rushing and he would say “take your time, kill the enemies first then move on.” And for a man on his 50’s he ain’t a bad gamer :3 I would make the loudouts for him while I make my own. I really do miss the days where I would sit down on the floor with my dad playing Army of Two on the ps3. Edit: Nolan North was the perfect voice for Salem ngl.
Bro me too. I'm surprised a lot of us share this experience. I'm guessing the third person mode was more tolerable for older people because he said FPS were too motion heavy. We loved 40th day and would struggle with the decisions that you had to make. Then we play the whole thing again just to see the outcome. We would even play in big head mode despite it being way easier we would just laugh because of how stupid it was. And same I would rush. But that dynamic was really fueled by the aggro system. Such good games.
@E.M. Same, my older brother and I had that dynamic, he rushed with the shotgun, specifically that AA 12, while I sniped. The 40th day was our favorite
Ya the story reminded me of a chuck Norris 80's action movie. Which had me smiling cause that's what those movies were simple and fun. That's what Hollywood and the gaming industry don't get today sometimes we want a AAA beautifully made theme park ride and challenge.
If you want some nice co-op games, you can always look towards the indie-market. It Takes Two is a great example that I've yet to play, but it rightfully won Game of the Year last year(2021 for some of you from the future). Some other 4 player co-op games that are always a blast are Left 4 Dead, Payday 2 and Black Ops 3 zombies. We all know the amount of fun Left 4 Dead can bring so I won't dwell on that. Black ops 3 zombies is surprisingly fun on PC, mainly because of it's Steam Workshop support. People are creating maps all the time and folks even remade maps such as Nuketown Zombies. Lastly, there's Payday 2. I have over 425 hours put into that game and I started playing only a little more than a year ago. It's highly addictive, has a fantastic community, honest developers who keep you up to date with devlogs and has a rich modding community. I hope you might pick up any of these lad. They're all priced pretty nicely during sales.
It really tears me up, i had so great memories of this series, this is a game for brothers i loved to play this with my little bro. We never fought or competed we collaborated it bonded us so much. Unfortunately couch co-op games are mostly dead and probably don't have space in this modern era. Army of two damn that slice of time that summer that i passed with my little brother are priceless, i vaguely remember the games and the story, i remember how close and how much fun we had and how freakishly coordinated we were without talking or barking orders at each other we felt like we could take the world together...I read the comments and man so nice to read similar experiences.
This prooves gaming as a media is far superior in sharing similar experiences and creating lasting memories. Everyone has some variant of this Memory and is somehow connected to strangers all over the world
The death of Couch Co-Op was also the death of playing with family and friends. All of my fondest memories were playing side by side with friends and family. Army of Two, Halo etc. Now even though it is nice to have a full screen experience when playing “online” with a friend or two it isn’t the same. There is no sharing food, stupid jokes, playing music too damn loud and then fighting about which band member was to blame for said break up of band, no sleepovers and in the morning starting all over again, no accusing each other of screen sniping, no last minute runs to the local store to get drinks and smokes and all that. So many improvements, that I am grateful for have also made sure we lost something, I don’t think we’ll get back. I know part of that is growing up and getting families or moving away etc but I think everyone will know what I mean. This Rise and Fall of the series sort of emulates that.
The "back to back" was epic and the hability to rip apart doors was so badass. I enjoy it a lot back in the day with my best friend. Now is only a memory.
I feel like they actually hit the nail on the head with the "dude-bro" vibes in the first two games. Seeing how many in the Armed services actually fit that 18-24yo mold can see themselves in these action heroes. A return to the original formula would probably hit pretty well today with how many of those "dude-bros" being retired, and have nothing but arena shooters to play. A Co-op Action Shooter would do well right now.
Agreed 100% these games were beautiful, messy fun and the physics, back and forth banter, and the stupid crap u can do with just a unpassable wall and a grenade.. spoiler I blew myself up over that wall and instantly downed myself and my brother couldn't reach me lol... Ahhh good times these games would do so well because of the "battle royale trend everyone is following rn. We need another pallet cleanser.
I also really appreciated the aggro system that let you coordinate with your partner who would purposely draw attention for the other player to flank. My friend and I had a blast with the series on console. He always took point because I can’t aim for squat with a controller. I really hoped they would bring it to PC, so I could turn the tables.
One of the major problems with the first Army Of Two has to do with deadlines and budgets. Was working on it for the last few months of development, it got to the point where rather than fix problems content would just be deleted. Earlier versions were a lot more fun and had a lot more features. To give you an idea, the introduction level was cut rather than fixed and you never get to meet Pedro until he's dead. I always wondered when you learn Pedro died how the gamer would think "WTF is Pedro?"
Yeah I remember waiting for the first game for years. My school had a magazine rack and I would check out the magazine featuring Army of Two and what is shown and talked about in the article was a lot different than what was released. For example I remember seeing that you used the boat to get to the aircraft carrier rather than simply parachuting down. Still a dope ass game though regardless.
I liked the game when it came out, thanks for your contributions towards it. Unfortunately I'd actually forgotten it existed until I saw this video appear - I think it could be a good TV series or movie one day.
I was in high-school when this game first came out and I remember sleeping over my friends house and we would play split screen co-op on the hardest difficulty all night as we ate junk food and take-out...Some of the best memories I hold dear
@@Myriip way to minimize their efforts. A script needs to be written, but first it has to be researched, validated, and fact checked. They have to reach out for sources, find insiders who are willing to speak and give personal accounts of the happenings behind the scenes. Then there’s the archival footage, you have to find game clips, developer footage, news video, on and on, etc.. just to edit into something cohesive and engaging to watch. Hire voice over performer to read your well thought out and written script, upload to the internet for free and wait for someone like you to pass through and marginalize all that hard work.
@@InterstellarFilms All that text and still, the question is not answered. Since when is reading a script and putting gameplay in the background "high quality"? You just explained the standard procedure on how to make a video
Oh wow this brings back memories for me. A friend and I used to play this game in couch coop alot. The idea of aggression and one person being invisible to the AI was genius. I never saw any other game since then doing this. I just realized how much I miss this game.
Dude same, I played the first game with my friend way back. Damn you don’t think about it at the time, but life really can get in the way of friendships.
Some of my best memories were watching my my best friend and his brother play this together as a kid, even though I was just an observer, watching their interactions was the best for me.
I remember LOVING 40th Day on the 360 back then. My uncle and I would binge through the whole game and absolutely wreak house with the awesome mechanics. The choices were also cool as we sat there for a sec and though "Do we wanna kill this guy or let him go?" and the hostage situation made us think and go 100% with co-op actions. The gimmicks were amazing too! Love the back-to-back shooting, the riot shield mobile cover, the fake surrender, fake death and aggro systems were all amazing! It's a shame no other game really seems to have tried to adopt those mechanics since they were solid.
40th Day was beyond its time. I agree with you that it is a shame no other game or company has made something close to it. My Bro in Law and I played this game like crazy.
Turning Salem traitor in the Devil's Cartel was heartbreaking since he was my favorite. Also. The character model for him was horrendous. Went from being young and fit to skinny and much older.
It was the worst in the series, most of the gameplay mechanics from the first two games were missing, graphics were worse... Everything about that game is bad. Not even mentioning how they butchered main characters of the first two games... Lol, even main characters of the third game has the exact same model, with different hair, that is it... Disgusting...
Ironically Devils Cartel was the first and only game of the series I played, but me and my roommate managed to get every achievement and complete it fully so I have a good memory of it.
I remember playing AoT and 40th day with my dad and had great memories, sad that the series died because the co-op mode was so much fun working through all the difficulties and the storyline was good too!
"Forgettable" is the perfect description for the third game. I clicked on the video wanting to be reminded on how Army of Two fell, since I recalled the "last" entry 40th Day being better received. When the third game was mentioned, I was really confused for a few seconds before it came rushing back.
Will never beat that era playing games in the same room talking in person having fun with family and friends. Was a great time to be gaming in the Xbox/PS2 era to the start of PS3/360 era
I loved the first 2 games. I remember seeing the trailer for The Devil's Cartel and instantly recognising the back of El Diablo's mask, which was the exact same as Salem's (who was my favourite of the two). I called out EA on their Facebook page (in a polite and civilised manner) about who the hell thought it'd be a good idea to ditch Salem & Rios only to make Salem the villain. Many fans shared my disgust for this decision and whoever was in charge of their FB page banned me from posting on the grounds of "spoiling" the game. I tried to like TDC, but it was such a missed oppertunity. Fans would have loved it, flaws and all, if Salem & Rios were the playable characters.
I am sorry that you had to go through that. EA Games to me is like the Superbowl. Annoying, ignorant and just overall a definition of the worst in America next to Activision. This moment wasnt your fault at all, just the higher ups being Triple A-holes in terms of behavior. Seriously, the way they treated you is why I dispise EA Games as of late as much as Activision and Bandai Namco (the Klonoa Fantasy Revue thing is a good thing, but it might get alot of popularity due to how it failed to get attention in the early 2000s).
@@TheForbidden_1ne Less customization and replacing Rios and Salem immediately killed the game for me. Didn’t help that it somehow managed to look worse than 40th Day too.
I remember getting this game from a kid at my school who was giving away games he didn't care for. I told him I would take whatever. He handed me 40th day. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Made some amazing memories with a great friend of mine, Charlie. Countless sleepovers and late nights grinding out the game. Good times man
My younger brother (by 1 year 3 months) and I played the hell out of the first Army of Two together and did everything you possibly could in it. We beat it on the hardest difficultly after beating it on normal, collected all the suitcases of money, got all the achievements we could and all that good stuff. It was the perfect couch co-op fun fest. We took turns on who was the aggro guy and who was the sneaky guy because I believe there were achievements for getting so many kills in the extremes of both ends of the spectrum. Although, I did relegate myself to the sneaky role alot as to make a compromise since my brother preferred the aggro role and it's heavy firepower. I grew to love the sniper/silenced smg play though so I still had a lot of fun. It was on the same level as Gears of War 1 & 2's campaign. Which my brother and I also beat together on the hardest difficulty. We liked it that much. We weren't critics though. We were around 18/19 years old. So we just wanted to have a good time and annihilate some enemies with high powered projectiles while laughing about it with joy lol. It was so fun that any real issues with it were easily overlooked. So much so that we beat it multiple times and still loved it. I really got into the customization of Army of Two over Gears lack thereof, and that's what separated the two. Being able to change masks and pimp out your guns just rocked back then. Yeah, that mechanic is in every other game these days, but it felt fresh back then and we loved it. Seeing a sweet gun you wanted and saving up your cash and searching for money caches was so fun and exciting. Knowing you were gonna get a sick upgrade for your efforts is hard to beat gameplay wise. Maybe that's why I enjoyed resident evil 4 and even 5 so much. You got that same feeling of satisfaction that you did from Army of Two once you purchased that sweet new gun you've been longing for. I'm on a tangent now so I'll leave it here - Army of Two (at least part 1) goes down as one of the best third person couch coop shooters of all time. I wish him and I could have played part 2 together because I guarantee we would have cleared it to 100% as well. They really hit the 🎯 with Army of Two. However, it's unfortunate that it crashed out so hard. Hopefully that doesn't take anything away from the greatness of the first two games. Because they were great for sure.
This game will always have a special place in my heart. My cousin Mike and I would play this game for hours on end every time I came up to visit my dad and we'd only ever take breaks to smoke and eat. We grew to be best friends but he died unexpectedly really young on his way to work one day. I miss him all the time and everytime I play this game I always feel like he's there with me again.
@@glibchubik4090 A Way Out had an entire section where you played it as a third person shooter. If they focused on a third person shooter I think they could do it.
This is one of those shooters that I would love to see rebooted with modern tech. The aggro system was a ton of fun and allowed me to be the stealthy one while my brother took all the heat which helped make the game feel a lot more interesting when playing co-op. I also really liked being able to help each other out by using a riot shield or drag someone to cover to heal them. So few co-op shooters out there that actually feel like they had some attention to the co-op part. Also now that I know why the devil's cartel is the way it was made a lot of sense why I had zero interest in playing it compared to the first 2 games (it was way too serious for it's own good imo when I watched the trailers).
100% agreed on this. I played these two games multiple times with a friend that i've had now for 30 years. At the very least, GoG needs to get their hands on the first and 2nd games.
Played all three and am unashamed to admit I enjoyed each of them. Glad I still have my copies. The two operatives going against swarms of enemies and coming out on top will always be the highlight of this series even if it got dicey and repetitive. Co op was great too.
My brother doesnt really game but we played all through the first Army of Two. It's an incredibly fond memory as we've never seen eye to eye on hobbies...ever or since.
The 40th Day is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s very flawed, no doubt about that, but the co-op focus is amazing. My friends and I spent countless hours with that game back in 2010.
I remember playing the first two with my cousin. one scene we still talk about when you have a young kid helping you and at the end my cousin made the choice and told the kid to grab a sniper instead of hiding and the kid got shot, to this day my cousin can't make a decision in a game without that moment haunting him lol
My thing was if you want to be treated that we have a similar mindset of war, then okay, kid, let’s go, you know to crouch cause you were doing it the entire time, but when you get happy for doing something that you know you could initially get, you want to celebrate, like a kid. I was upset at first, but when I saw we got the sniper rifle, I didn’t complain afterward.
Its not forgotten.....What some people have a hard time grasping is that couch coop is going away.....A system in a couch coop setting has to render EVERYTHING twice and because the graphics whores cry about everything and everything needs to be 6500k 2000fps or its not enjoyable and garbage they focus on graphics which is what kills the ability to do couch coop...No intelligent devs want to waste resources because it takes away from other things....Coop is still widely around as online coop.
My cousin and I loved playing co-op games a lot and this series was one of our favorites. I bought figures of these two and they were one of the coolest figures I've owned. I wish they made a comeback. I miss them.
This game would perform a lot better nowadays since a mass majority of gamers have online now and co-op games being such a big thing. You make a good Army of Two game now and it could be big time. You could also do some 2v2 arena multiplayer style games, or just duos matches with bigger player counts.
I want the formula to come back. I want the same core but new ideas. I want new roles. Allow us to interact with aggro more. Maybe both players can stealth, or both players can aggro. Maybe you can manage enemy AI confusion.
I remember playing this game with my little brother when we were younger. Im hoping there will be another game like this in the future. In the game, I would take the lead and he does what I tell him. Sometimes I would die for being careless and he would drag me to safety. It brought us closer and made us laugh and happy. Glad we got to experience this type of game together and we still talk about it sometimes.
Kane & Lynch was so very underrated. One of my favorite stories in a game ever. I love it's cinematic view of things and the way the entire game looks as if it's being caught on a CCTV camera.
Don't believe what they say of part three. It's awesome. Going after a drug cartel took it to a more realistic mature tone. There was also more gore with limbs being able to get blown off. I wish Xbox had made part 3 backwards compatible.
Army of TWO was one of my first game on PS3, loved the story, the lore, even part 3 with its drastic changes… that’s right! I didn’t mind evil Elliot lol. Thank you for making this video. Literally NO ONE gives a damn about this series but I’ve been missing it for a long time. Sincerely Thank You 🙏🏽
@@godhasabandonedme1643 I dont remember much but I loved the one you unlock after beating the game from Rios, one that he uses in one of the last missions. Very clean looking
Army of Two the 40th day was a huge part of my childhood and any time I hear the name I smile a little because it just brings back memories of me and my younger brother going through the campaign over and over again.
I loved every single game from this series i know the third wasnt the same but I still loved it these games hold a very special place in my heart because i used to play it with my dad my father doesnt talk to me anymore so its a bittersweet memory but everytime i think about playing some army of two it makes me feel a slight warmth in my heart and a sting too but its nice to have a good memory
i loved this series. as somebody thats been a pothead my whole life, i probably have never played a game sober and i never realize most problems in games until reviewers point them out lol. i played all 3 of these games when they were new and loved them all. now here i am trying to catch up on nostalgia and find out all 3 of these games had serious flaws lmao. THIS is why i can never be a reviewer
Since everyone else is sharing experiences. I also used to play with my bf. He passed a few years ago, so that can't happen anymore. But it was fun while it lasted. We were both addicts, and even in our addiction we still sat down and played together....I made myself sad.
If hazelight ever got a chance to reboot this series, I would be so excited. No one does co-op better… but I would only want them to do it if they wanted to do it. They need to stay creative.
The 40TH Day was the Best one. The first was really clunky and I got stuck a few times. Through Glitches. The Second Game made up for all of that I really wanted a Fourth Game. But we never got it. Such a Shame after all the Hard work fixing the sequel went through! I never knew about the Third Game till this video. Thank You for covering it. Maybe I can find of the Microsoft Store.
Army of Two was such a fun ride - a barebones cover-shooter that just embraced is trashiness without pretenses. A third game based only on new levels in the old engine would have been fine - a limited market perhaps but cheap to make.
I truly had amazing memories with this game. Being able to hang with family members and play this is just so pure. I remember playing with cousins and just yelling at the screen in excitement, moving strategically through missions. It truly was a game that elevated bonds within families. Much appreciated
The 40th day was so good, me and my brother played the campaign the first time and we really liked it and then playing it again in the hardest was just as good, even going as far as to make a competition on who could reach the end on certain levels without each others help and sabotaging each other by throwing grenade and destroying each others cover. I honestly forgot devils cartel was a real product, visceral should have double downed on the dude bro action.
Playing this game with my buddy Jason is like the action game we always should recieve. There is something to be said when two good players team up in these games, totally feels beast when ya nail it
I love army of two I will always have fond memories of playing it my dad we played it until we Max out everything, then I bought 40th Day when it came out and did the same thing my only complaint about 40th day was it was too short it should have been at least 8 to 12 hours campaign but it was just too short regardless of that me and my dad had fun, me and my dad still had fun playing devil's cartel even though it was disappointing compared to the other two games by now it had become a family tradition, I remember a few years later my dad asking me when was the next army two coming out, I told him there wouldn't be anymore army of two games because they had shut down the studio, he didn't say anything at first and then he said that was stupid of EA and we went and played call of duty after that.
Hate playing games now that are sweaty, grind fests. Miss that about Army of Two: fun, especially with a friend, and not asking you to try your hardest each game and best in 1 or 2hr doses. Games need to be more like this.
I can only hope that one day we get a GVMERS video about the rise and fall of EA Sports BIG... The greatest era with some of my favorite games ever SSX 3, NBA street Vol.2, Fifa street 2 and Def Jam.
@@ThisBirdHasFlown No, I said amongst my personal favorites! Mix of childhood nostalgia and great quality! Plus the feels were different when I was a kid cause I would get maybe 2-3 new games a year so I would finish every single one of them maybe 10-20 times so yeah a lot of my personal favorites are ps2 games or GBA, DS cause back then games affected me so much more than now...
Army of Two was an amazing series. In my opinion The Devil’s Cartel was so underrated, I legitimately have no idea how it got terrible reviews. It was a great game.
Journalists don't realize games are supposed to be fun first and foremost. Journalists talked about Army of Two the way they are now talking about Dyling Light 2. They are mostly clueless
Same. Bought it when I was working in Japan (don't ask, it sucked) and I had a lot of fun with my roommate while we were stuck indoors without wifi during a big storm. Couch co-op is so underrated in today's gaming environment. Sad since it is so many of my old memories as a kid.
Because it was inferior to the previous games in every aspect. Didnt stop me from playing it ,but sure as hell I didnt replay it unlike the other games from the trilogy
this was good, dumb fun. a good co-op game in a time where any ort of co-op was rare. my friend and i still exclaim "back to back!!!" to one another to this day. not exactly a favorite game of ours, but it made a lot of great memories.
A new army of two would slap. Co-op games are always in short supply and I have some ideas. The story could involve you building up your own pmc base and with your partner, you build it up by taking on contracts around the world. I’m thinking almost like an XCOM style base or Tarkov hideout. There has to be an overarching story as well and I think if they stuck with intrigue and politics, it could serve them well. Maybe one mission you are tasked with protecting a convoy and you are in the main SUV with a boss or something and you overhear some intel about some greater conflict… I don’t know. However, PvP would be cool to have the mechanics of the game with multiple pairs entering a zone and having to fight it out.
This is a very well made & produced video. I’m happy to see a franchise that’s so dear to my heart covered so thoroughly and professionally. Thank you 🙏.
@@Bizzarovid I actually agree. Overkill was a really fun feature. I made a note in my own post. But this was not a Visceral game in the end. The clowns back at Redwood shores made us remove both the Frostbite logo and the Visceral logo about a week before final. They didn't want to hurt the "Brand" Of course, Visceral was disbanded shortly afterwords because the guy heading it is an egotistical clown.
My friend and I spent many weekends playing the first two games. I remember us beating both on the hardest difficulty, just the relief we felt. At that point we didn’t care who died at the end of the 40th Day 😂. They should rerelease them for newer consoles. I’d pay to be able to play the first two again. The zoo level on 40th Day and the aircraft carrier level for the original
40th day was awesome, good memories playing that game with My brother. Gunning for those gun mods and having mucking around with the fake death mechanic.
I've played all of the Army of 2 games. And I. Never seen anyone actually hating devil's cartel. Me and my older brother As kids played the games And we had a mutual agreementhat devil's cartel was the best one. I was around 7 years old, he was around 12. To this day, I'm waiting for him to come down from Colorado and visit Which he will be doing next month And we talked about replaying some of our childhood games together And the one we are most excited for is still army of two devils cartel. I am 18 and he is now 23.
Army of Two was the only thing keeping me and my older brother together in the tough times living with our father. i wish it could come back, and be something that people would look forward to again. the First Army of Two game made me and my brother co-operate and actually helped our relationship, making us care for reachother like brothers should. Army of Two deserves a Comeback, but not by EA, as they are already lost in the MTA hell they themselves created. if anyone can revive Army of Two, it's Obsidian.
My younger brother and I never got along until this game. We had to work together and emote diss each other mid game, it was so much fun! It honestly helped us just listen to each other in real life as well.
Every now and then TH-cam recommends a gem of a video and this really took me back. Me, my brother and cousin would play this game for hours and laugh while doing it. I’d play it with my cousin on his PS3 and I’d play with my brother on his, or mine, 360 and those old couch CO-OP games were gold
Army of Two was great couch-co-op fun. It was one of the many great titles that materialized in the 'golden years of EA', along with Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Bad Company and - via acquisition - Mass Effect. The only one of those that wasn't driven to the ground by corpo meddling was Mirror's Edge - and in hindsight I'm eternally grateful that the two entries were left special and isolated. Seriously, I wouldn't want the current EA/DICE exec strata anywhere near that world.
one of favorite co-ops ever. A random weekend with a buddy, rented from a little known relic known as blockbuster. Good times. Always wondered where this series went.
Back when Army of Two first came out, me and my college roommates, suitemates, were all way too into Halo 3 to really care. I didn't even think Army of Two was on my radar in 2008. My college suitemates would sneak into my room while I wasn't there and play Halo 3 without my permission, on my Xbox, but more importantly, they would look at my DVD collection. I had like 215 DVDs in alphabetical order and they would play a cruel joke where they would move two random titles in different places and see how long it would take me to notice. Yeah, I know that says a lot more about me then it does about them, but I could tell every time that was the joke. I would just scan briefly over my DVDs everyday and see if they had taken one was usually the issue wasn't-I wasn't checking to see if they put them out of order, I was checking because they would turn up MISSING. And then I would track them down and find someone across the hallway who borrowed one without asking and what do you know! The DVD is missing from inside of its jewel case! Where did it go? No one knows. Oh I found it, it's in two pieces now. No, I'm not still angry about that.
Ah yeah I recall a guy like you at my boarding school, and that aint a positive thing, no wonder your friends used your shit without asking, your colours show clear as day 🤣
22:42 EA loves doing this and it always fails. They have a good studio and then they rename all their other studios after it. They fire a lot of the head people at the studios that lost their names and it eventually all comes crashing down. EA did this with Visceral by naming EA Montreal into Visceral Montreal. Later on EA did this with Bioware, they renamed like 5 studios into Bioware (montreal, san francisco, sacramento, mythic...) lost a ton of talent and closed a ton of them. The game quality also suffered. The only thing keeping EA alive is their sport games, the second they lose their license for NFL and FIFA they will go under.
Adaptive tone has got to be the greatest innovations they could've brought to the forefront. Really hope somebody sees that and implements it in more games.
1:05 this scene here made me laugh real hard. *Why???* Because I remembered when EA/DICE said they would put a similar function/feature in BF5 then they didnt because it was _'too hard'_ Here we have a game that was released in 2008 that had this feature. This game was way ahead of its time and even more so since 90% of the Battlefield franchise seems what EA/DICE class as _'Legacy Features'_ despite every other game still having the same features. Big Brain Moves by EA/DICE

For me it's Gears, but yeah, I wish they could Revive this series.
I do the same with Killzone 2 in skirmish mode.
Same, but with DMC.
The first game that is.

Ahhh u thought I was the only one who played this series with my dad
@@makaismckay9604 never got to play this with my dad but we did play halo that's dope
I actually really liked this series. I found it to be simple fun. There aren't enough 2 person co-op games like this now
Which is why it takes two won game of the year, it was new and refreshing
@@NorthEevee This is awesome, thanks for the recommendations mate
It takes 2 was so refreshing 2005-2015 there were so many now it’s all pvp.
Same here with my brother. Devil cartel was awesome
So true me and my bro really bonded bcus of this game sucks split screen games are dying
Ha ! I played this with my big bro growing up !
I had a BLAST playing Army of Two on 360. The Co-op mechanics was so well done and made it fun. Me and my brother had some fun time playing this game.
Lots of brothers played this game huh? Loved spending time off school with my older brother. Something about couch co op hits different.
@@LT1597 My brothers and I also played this. The back to back mechanic was always so cool to me.
Air guitars bro
Yea we all loved it wish they didn’t stop making them
Same, great game for siblings
Army of Two: The 40th Day was AMAZING. I've played through it so many times. Still to this day one of my all-time favorite games.
if i ever get a copy again id play it through in the same spots i remember to grind for most cash
Same!
That reminds me of Daikatana on N64 where the cutscenes included characters that were cut out of the game.
CUT scenes lol
Yeah I remember waiting for the first game for years. My school had a magazine rack and I would check out the magazine featuring Army of Two and what is shown and talked about in the article was a lot different than what was released. For example I remember seeing that you used the boat to get to the aircraft carrier rather than simply parachuting down. Still a dope ass game though regardless.
Must be ironic seeing todays games shitustry just releasing broken content to fix it afterwards on purpose
I liked the game when it came out, thanks for your contributions towards it. Unfortunately I'd actually forgotten it existed until I saw this video appear - I think it could be a good TV series or movie one day.
James, would you be interested in discussing your time as a developer on a podcast?
I was in high-school when this game first came out and I remember sleeping over my friends house and we would play split screen co-op on the hardest difficulty all night as we ate junk food and take-out...Some of the best memories I hold dear

I normally listen to videos without watching the screen and I’m trying to find time to sit down and binge watch this channel’s videos.
All the time, this is an elite channel for sure.

@@Myriip way to minimize their efforts. A script needs to be written, but first it has to be researched, validated, and fact checked. Army of Two: The 40th day was my favorite of the series. So much fun time playing with my friend its nostalgic.
Oh wow this brings back memories for me. A friend and I used to play this game in couch coop alot. The idea of aggression and one person being invisible to the AI was genius. I never saw any other game since then doing this. I just realized how much I miss this game.

I loved 40th Day.
Fucking same bro lmao
Has always been a classic gaming experience in my eyes, with Rios and Salem being household names. Never knew it didn’t do too well.
Hard to believe over a million copies isn't considered very successful.
Turning Salem traitor in the Devil's Cartel was heartbreaking since he was my favorite. Also. The character model for him was horrendous. Went from being young and fit to skinny and much older.

"Forgettable" is the perfect description for the third game. I clicked on the video wanting to be reminded on how Army of Two fell, since I recalled the "last" entry 40th Day being better received. When the third game was mentioned, I was really confused for a few seconds before it came rushing back.
I'm glad I got to grow up around the couch co-op era. Honestly really had some great memories with my brother playing these games
Will never beat that era playing games in the same room talking in person having fun with family and friends. Was a great time to be gaming in the Xbox/PS2 era to the start of PS3/360 era
Couch co-op on console and LAN gaming for PC was peak video game industry.
Me and my mom used to play this all the time. This video brought back some pretty great memories. Thanks
Right. That pissed just about everybody off. That and the fact they took massive steps backwards in the customization department. The game was a dud
@@TheForbidden_1ne Less customization and replacing Rios and Salem immediately killed the game for me. Didn’t help that it somehow managed to look worse than 40th Day too.

God i remember playing this game on 360 co-op with my brother back then, good times.
Couch co-op was great. Wish it was still around in modern gaming.
Took the words from my mouth, such a great bonding experience:,-)
This game will always have a special place in my heart. My cousin Mike and I would play this game for hours on end every time I came up to visit my dad and we'd only ever take breaks to smoke and eat. We grew to be best friends but he died unexpectedly really young on his way to work one day. I miss him all the time and everytime I play this game I always feel like he's there with me again.

I agree after playing A Way Out and It Takes Two, they are absolutely the best option for an Army of Two revival or if not them then Respawn.
They're doing good coop games but honestly i can't see them taking on a third person shooter. I don't think it fits in their identity
@@glibchubik4090 A Way Out had an entire section where you played it as a third person shooter. If they focused on a third person shooter I think they could do it.
Dude I used to play this with my brother all the time. I really miss couch co-op games.
I remember staying up all night playing through the whole game with my cousin when the first one came out. This series is one of my favorites.
Played all three and am unashamed to admit I enjoyed each of them. Glad I still have my copies. The two operatives going against swarms of enemies and coming out on top will always be the highlight of this series even if it got dicey and repetitive. Co op was great too.

Bruh I still think about my decisions to this day
My thing was if you want to be treated that we have a similar mindset of war, then okay, kid, let’s go, you know to crouch cause you were doing it the entire time, but when you get happy for doing something that you know you could initially get, you want to celebrate, like a kid.

This game would perform a lot better nowadays since a mass majority of gamers have online now and co-op games being such a big thing. You make a good Army of Two game now and it could be big time. lost a great friend a few years ago, this was our favorite game to play..tried playing recently but its just not the same without him
I can only hope that one day we get a GVMERS video about the rise and fall of EA Sports BIG... The greatest era with some of my favorite games ever SSX 3, NBA street Vol.2, Fifa street 2 and Def Jam.
You really think those are some of the greatest games ever?
@@ThisBirdHasFlown No, I said amongst my personal favorites! Mix of childhood nostalgia and great quality! Plus the feels were different when I was a kid cause I would get maybe 2-3 new games a year so I would finish every single one of them maybe 10-20 times so yeah a lot of my personal favorites are ps2 games or GBA, DS cause back then games affected me so much more than now...
This series needs a revival
Army of Two was an amazing series. In my opinion The Devil’s Cartel was so underrated, I legitimately have no idea how it got terrible reviews. It was a great game.
It was my favorite of the three.
One word EA.
We need to petition EA to remaster the trilogy for modern consoles with full online support.
this was good, dumb fun. a good co-op game in a time where any ort of co-op was rare.
my friend and i still exclaim "back to back!!!" to one another to this day. not exactly a favorite game of ours, but it made a lot of great memories.
Division 2 is the closest I've got to Army of 2 co op ever since.
Can't even lie, I really enjoyed the devil's cartel. Super easy to just zone in and blast bad guys apart, especially with some music
It was the only one I played and I payed maybe 5 bucks for it. Good mindless fun for me as a 13 year old
Thanks dude, I was on the team. There are definitely some fun moments.
@@gregoryrizzer3455 awesome! It's got the best feeling shooting of the 3 and the ability to just tear people to shreds was awesome
Me and my brother would get stoned and play. Good times
I’m watching this video for the first time and this is my exact thought as I have a similar memory
The 40th day has no right being as good as it is. The most underrated COOP game with an interesting plot.
I remember devils cartel being fun af… I played the whole campaign thru multiple times with my brother
My younger brother and I never got along until this game. We had to work together and emote diss each other mid game, it was so much fun! It honestly helped us just listen to each other in real life as well.
Me & my brother put in a lot of hours in this game. Co-op was so much fun
Ah yeah I recall a guy like you at my boarding school, and that aint a positive thing, no wonder your friends used your shit without asking, your colours show clear as day 🤣
This was a great video. Not only informed me more on the technical side of what was going on but brought back a lot of great memories. Thank you
Back when EA cared about releasing a good product.
For sure
the 40th day is one of the best games of all time. replayed that so much with a friend of mine back then
22:42 EA loves doing this and it always fails.
*Why???* Because I remembered when EA/DICE said they would put a similar function/feature in BF5 then they didnt because it was _'too hard'_
Here we have a game that was released in 2008 that had this feature. This game was way ahead of its time and even more so since 90% of the Battlefield franchise seems what EA/DICE class as _'Legacy Features'_ despite every other game still having the same features.
Big Brain Moves by EA/DICE
I'm glad that Montreal studios didn't name the second installation of the game as Army of Two 2
I loved 40th Day. It's one of my top ten favorite games of all time. And that's saying something.
ONE of the best coop experiences i had with my best friend back in the day
